does that help at all?
-
Really? I'm not seeing how that is possible. I think it maybe a bit small for a turret mounted cannon, but the base is too wide for wheels to look right. I dont think it's anything like a scifi weapon?
-
Why thankyou, and thanks to everyone for their praise and suggestions. It has been a great motivational drive to create more and improve mocs. Also keep in mind my style is not for everyone. A lot of times I sacrafice stability for shape and form. It means that sometimes my models are extremely fragile. I try my best for a sturdy model but not at the expence of morphology. It is very hard for me to limit myself to a TLC style of building, not that they don't have some excellent designs! For instance they would probably never use disassembled minifig parts as I did for this creature's eyes He'll be in a viking hunting moc at some point.

I can't make her longer even if I wanted to. I'm out of slope bricks for now. Speaking of green I plan on adding some sort of seaweed detail. I have given it a little thought, but don't have anything in the works for now. (maybe a brick built minfig head with minifig hands or viking horns for the tentacle beard) just a idea I had!?

A progress update of the Flying Ducthman since I'm taking a break from it for a short while. I don't have enough peices to finish or even really start the starboard side, and I'm broke for now, so I can't bricklink for a while either. :-( I should be able to finish the bow soon and complete deckplates and masts without a full starboard hull I also will try to work on the bley and dark grey integration or replacement. I need a good picture of the main deck as well. If anyone finds one give me the heads up *y*

What is the piece used for the end of the cannon barrel? Some kind of scala pot or bucket?
-
Not really. When I did the bow I had to cut off the internal tabs, but it didn't affect any outward appearance or stability. however I did happen to scratch the upper section just a little around the tabs. It's neglegable, and in a place you don't see normaly *y*

yeah I forgot about that, but it somehow just doesn't do them justice. :-( The civiliation is in a declining state in that theme, best if they were depicted at their peak. I do love ruins though!

The fantasy elements stay within it's own genre for the most part. That analogy is like putting speed boats with 17th century pirates. I like to use monsters where ever possible. The kraken is not exclusive to viking's and it has numerous variables throughout time; giant crabs, fish the size of islets, giant cephalopods, sea serpents ... all good for a mythical pirate theme. other possibilities are Neptune's army, huge sharks, whales, giant jellyfish, big saltwater crocs, plesiosaurs(Lock Ness type monsters,) huge walrus's and ashore beasts like found in the Sinbad the sailor movies; giant birds, lizards and sometimes Greek and Roman monsters. Wizards were also in those movies. I would love an Aztec or Mayan theme, but I would like that genre to include it's mythology such as Quetzalcoatl And the Chinese with their wonderful demons and creatures!

Thanks to Berry Syedow's find, I've been inspired to build that Fyining Dutchman's ship. I have a teaser pic here!

here is a a teaser pic of a work in progress the POTC's Flyin' Ducthman I fealt this was the best place to post it until it's finished.

Huh? The MOC forum a "protected forum"
ghoulrealm replied to oo7's topic in Forum Information and Help
I have the same problem! :-( Why doesn't that subforum like pirates? :'-) Is it because theyr'e affraind we'll steal their ideas? >:-) I geuss it would be warented, because sometimes I'll use some good moc skills from there. :-D -
Kids wound'nt have access to catapult for instance nor a nuclear sub for that matter. But they could have access to knives and guns, if they happen to take it to far. If anything is contraversal, it's the hand guns! Anyway my main gripe againts the sub or any divers set is the colors alone, not wether it has firepower, but if it has favorable pieces for pirate, castle, or space theme. I suppose you could use white or yellow for those themes, but I would prefer greys, brown, and black, or even sandblue for alien craft. The pieces are awesome and the set is awesome but the colors just don't go with my eyes :-( :-D

Here is a small turret mounted cannon made of a soccer goalie handle I've also made some custom cannon balls of bionicle ball joints
-
Yes it is scientific based vessels, and that is exactly why it wasn't quite as popular. I am thinking it should have been a nuclear sub, but I don't see the destinction between a modern military theme and other themes. Castle has archers, swordsmen, catapults, horse whips, and the new set has a tourture chamber. Pirates have muskets, cannons, cutlasses, and are theiving muderers Adventures have rifles and revolvers Wild West has sabres, cannons, rifles, and revolvers Space has lasers and torpedos and whatever other scifi weapons you can think of Star wars has a Deathstar... that alone humbles a nuclear power! Just look at how popular those themes are! The city and train themes are popular too, but not nearly as much as those with conflict of some sort, I think? And regaurdless, I just don't like :-X yellow! X-D

Already there! I did it same day I uploaded my ghost ship moc folder, here I was going to mention it, but didn't want to seem to be sucking up for a promotion.
-
Where's the option for ONLY fictional, fantastical, mythological? I do agree they should be mixed, but I do'nt believe there is such a thing as too much fantasy. Thats the reason I dont care as much for city or train as themes. It's like the same old things you see in everyday modern life.

for me it's almost entirely the pysical archetecture and visual astetics of wooden sailing vessels that appeal to me. It's not the story, unless it has some extremely outlandish paranormal and mytical story behind it. Here are a few movies and shows that have inspired me, in addition to all the movies allready mentioned; Goonies, Moby Dick, Baron Munchausen, Popeye (when the setting is a wooden ship,) scoobydoo(when they investagate ghost ships), Time Bandits, 20,000 leagues under the sea, and 4 or 5 Sinbad the sailor movies. The cartoons were an ifluence when I was younger but I wouldn't use them as a template for mocs or anything. I was really disappointed that the movie Ghost Ship had a 'modern' cruise ship instead of a wooden vessel. Btw I also really love Cutthroat Island as well.

I'm sure they could, but eveybody and his brother build large and long ships. I just would prefer some more medium to small ships more often, like Evil Willy's Lotus
-
I getting a vibe here that some of you folks are mearly impressed by size alone. I will admit that it has some very well executed designs; the nets for shroud bases the statuaries the horizontal curve of the hull, good color scheme minus the sails but I think it also has some major flaws as well; The boxy stern gallery the jagged inward curve of the bow it's a good effort, but I'm not digging the bow railing. It's no better or worse than most ships of smaller designs. The most impressive aspect is the builder's lego budget and endurance. If it's closely accurate to any real galleon, I wouldnt like the real ship either. Don't most ships taper inwards toward the upper decks even with a gallery (external balcony)? I've found a more similar ship image. Note how the stern gallery is more like a trapezoid than rectangle.

Has POTC crossed the line? Should Lego follow?
ghoulrealm replied to SirScottLego's topic in LEGO Pirates
You can have a stimulating theme without mythical or paranormal aspects, but why not include them. Even if TLC decides not to include those features, my mocs will, as it is my forte. Pirate theme is an exellent base to moc all kinds of creatures, mythical and real. The paranormal and myhtical culture is the best component to any medium. -
I wouldn't say they are always ugly nor that I would never build a large vessel. But too often it seems like people concentrate more on making models large, and less on form and details. I do prefer shorter ships more than long in general, not only for personal preference but because i can make more medium sized vessels and to have a larger fleet. To precisely answer your question, I would typicaly not use more than 3 midsections and usually only one.

I believe Tculrich's version captures the proportions better while PrincessLego's ship is for more detailed. Since I favor overall form before function I will have to go with Tculrich's version. Princesslego's ship has some excellent architecture, but the sterncastle is a bit too massive(height wise) compared to the rest of the ship.

I don't think lengthening will help. Instead of being bulbous like a standard incandescent lamp it'll be boulbous as a fog lamp, or instead of a tugboat it'll be a long tug. It's more a matter of how you build the upper decks alone. I wasnt suggesting that you were personally subscribing to the "bigger is better" policy, but in my experience many people do. just the other day my roommate told me to combine all my hulls and make a huge ship. I was not amused and showed him the +4 hull and he went away. Most of the time, I personally think the larger a ship is, the more unsightly it is, regardless of hull type. I am curious to see if SkaForHire can pull something off with his moster hull on this thread I'll try to keep an open mind, but I'm not optimistic about it. :-/ good luck though ;-)

I realise that, and thats cool, but I felt it may be usefull to others and hopefully inspire some more beast mocs from others. Using movies for inspiration is great and I don't have any objections againts it, but don't limit your mocs to hollywood versions. I try to use anatomical realism at least in form if not size, but it need not be limted to existing creatures either. I geuss my point is that it should be as realistic as possible, at least in morphology, as lego can get. that is if you have access to a good lego inventory.
