Mindstorms Variations
DLuders replied to Notorious Guf's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't know -- maybe the German version of the robot above is named "Alpha Rolf 2.0" (instead of Alpha Rex 2.0)! -
Wow, that sellout was quick! It could be that Toys-R-Us also "goofed up" by releasing the 9398 set too early. May The Lego Police shut them down -- who knows? Anyway, TLG should be selling LOTS OF THEM in about a week.... I have e-mail confirmation for my Toys-R-Us transaction, so I expect them to honor the deal.

Mindstorms Variations

You can download an English version of the Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 software (for the 8547 set) directly from this specific Lego Customer Service webpage. -
Yes, third-party 1.9" (48mm I.D.) tires are made for RC cars and trucks, but they happen to fit the Lego 44772 "Wheel 56mm D. x 34mm Technic Racing Medium" if their width is ~37mm to ~48mm. I have been trying to find 3rd-party tires that would fit on the 22969 "Wheel 62mm D. x 46mm Technic Racing Large" (the "Power Puller" wheel). The diameter of the rim's interior is 57.4 mm (basically the same as the 44772 wheel above), but I could not stretch the Two Face 1.9 Offroad Scale Tires onto it. The problem is that, when stretching the tire onto the far side of the rim, one cannot clear the 62mm-diameter flange: One could take a chance and get some 2.2" (56mm I.D.) RC tires, but they may fit too loosely onto the Power Puller's interior rim (57.4mm) without glue. Here is a RC Power Puller tire/wheel -- far too wide for the available Lego wheels:

Technic - "old" vs "new"

Yes, the Lego 8479 Barcode Multi-Set was unusual! -
@ Dannnohhh: I also wanted those "Mickey Thompson 1.9 Baja Claw TTC Scale Tires" (multiple buying sources here), but my "piggy bank" is empty! They seem to be the largest 1.9-I.D. crawler-type tires that will fit on the Lego 44772 wheels. They look awesome!

Appendix B to Sariel's Gears Tutorial has a good analysis: "As of early 2011, the classic 16 teeth gear has been modified. The version we have known before is apparently being gradually replaced with a new version coming from a slightly different mould: "The picture above shows the old version on the left (part number 4019) and the new version on the right (part number 94925). As you can see, the shape of the gear’s outer rim is exactly the same, whereas the structure in the middle of it has been significantly altered. It appears that the new version is supposed to be stronger and less prone to mechanical damage from high torque, as its centre is clearly more massive. Additionally, the outer ring around the gear appears roughly twice as thick, which is most likely another factor that makes the new version of the gear more torque-resistant."

It looks like you are making a Mercedes Gelandewagen! -
@ davidmull: Do a Google search for "RC 1.9 Tires" and look for widths in the 37mm-48mm range. There are plenty of custom tires that will fit on the 9398's wheels, and they are sure to out-perform those hard Lego balloon tires (Power Puller or not). Conchas' video shows that the WIDER STANCE provided by "negative offset mounting" of the Lego Power Puller wheels helps keep the 9398 4x4 Crawler from tipping over so easily. The Power Puller Wheel/Tire combination (Lego 22969+32298) weighs (20.56g + 170.00g) = 190.56g total, while the stock 44772+54120 wheel/tire combination that comes with the 9398 set weighs (15.40g + 43.60g) = 59.00g total (according to the Russian Bricker website http://en.Bricker.ru/parts ) -- 322% more weight.

Here is a chart of RC-type 1.9" (48mm) tires that fit onto the common Lego 44772 Wheel, sorted by Outside Diameter (O.D.). As a "lower limit", I used the Ansmann 211000214 Tires' 37mm width (since efferman and others PROVED that it fit). As the "upper limit", I used the Two Face 1.9 Offroad Scale Tires' 48.42mm width (since I proved that it fit). I'm sure there are MANY MORE 1.9 Tires that also fit; this chart has a GOOD VARIETY of tire sizes and tread patterns. To see them side-by-side, go to this RC4WD webpage. Consider replacing your common Lego 54120 "Balloon Tire 94.8 x 44R" with a custom tire that looks more realistic and has better grip! The RC4WD website listed is just one source for these tires; do a search for the tire description to find other sources for your country.

@ vwpint: Efferman used the same Lego 44772 wheels that came with the 9398 4x4 Crawler set. If you are talking about those Ansmann 211000214 TIRES, efferman posted this amazon.de link earlier in this topic. You can use this online translator to copy/paste the German text and see what it says in Estonian.

Conchas (Fernando Correia) has posted an Addendum , to show "Custom Tires" on the Lego 9398 4x4 Crawler set. He wrote, "This video is integral part of my reviews of the 2012 LEGO Technic flagship - 9398, 4x4 Crawler. The full set review is now available at:http://www.technicbricks.blogspot.pt/2012/07/tbs-techreview-15-9398-4x4-crawler.html The review addendum for custom tires performance, will be soon available at: http://www.TechnicBRICKs.blogspot.com ."

The "two-faced" tread pattern of the wider Two Face 1.9 Offroad Scale Tires (on the left) is not as deep as the Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires (on the right). However, the CONTACT PATCH of those wider tires is a lot more, so maybe it cn "grab" rough surfaces better. I don't yet have a Lego 9398 4x4 Crawler to test them! They are both made of the same, soft rubber compound. The Two Face Tires weigh 108 grams (vs. the 81 grams for the Rok Lox), which are more than the 43.6 grams for the Lego 54120 Tire but a lot less than the 170 grams for the Lego 32298 Power Puller Tire. Blakbird wrote that the 9398 4x4 Crawler could handle the weight of the Power Puller tires/wheels, and efferman is having a good time with those big Ansmann 211000214 tires! From the videos I've seen, I really think that the SOFT RUBBER COMPOUND and LARGER CONTACT PATCHES of third-party RC tires helps improve the performance of the 9398!

Effe's MOC Corner

@ efferman: I like the overkill! The code name of "5to ra gl" must be abbreviations in German -- what does it mean? I looked in your Flickr photoset and see how the four Power Functions Large motors could provide the power needed to climb that concrete pipe (with the help of those Ansmann tires)! -
Two Face 1.9 Offroad Tires (On Left) vs. Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires (On Right): I also received a set of four Two Face 1.9 Offroad Scale Tires today, and they fit great on the standard Lego 44772 wheel. They are virtually the same diameter as the Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires, but they are 1/4" wider and take full advantage of the 44772 wheel's entire width. My Flickr photoset "Specification: * Outer Diameter: 4.48" (114mm) * Width: 1.77" (45mm) * Inner Diameter: 1.9" (48mm) * X3 Super soft compound" Two Face 1.9 Offroad Scale Tires vs. Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires, Both on Lego 44772 Wheels:

@ Conchas: I received the low-profile, Duratrax DTXC9708 directional RC tires, but they don't fit the Lego 44772 wheels very well. Even though the tires have an Inside Diameter (I.D.) of 1.9" (48mm), and their width (35mm) is very close to matching the outermost rim's width (34mm), they do not have enough support in the center and there is a CONCAVE surface. I was hoping it could be a substitute for the Lego 44771 "Black Tire 68.8 x 36 ZR" (right picture below) from the 8070 Supercar II set: On the left is a set of 44771 tires on the Lego 44772 wheels, and at the center is the Duratrax tire on the same 44772 wheel. The three tires on the right are not mounted on the wheels; notice that their diameter is smaller than the mounted Duratrax tire in the center. The yellow foam insert did not provide sufficient support to the sunken center portion of the tread. Oh well, I'll give these tires away to some RC car owner sometime.

@ Snapshot: Have you seen the HiTechnic NXT IRLink Sensor? With it, you can "Control LEGO R/C trains and other motorized LEGO sets with the HiTechnic IRLink Sensor for the Mindstorms NXT. The IRLink uses Infrared signals to communicate with trains, Power Functions Motor controller and the Mindstorms RCX . Control the speed and direction of up to three LEGO R/C trains (7897 and 7898) and other sets including the new Technic Motorized Bulldozer (8275) and the Monster Dino (4958). The IRLink enables NXT programs to read values from RCX sensors and control motors connected to the RCX."

Over on the Eurobricks Digital Designer Forum, P4trickvH created a Lego Digital Designer (LDD) LXF file (with this LXF file improved upon by Zblj) of the 9398 4x4 Crawler set. He wrote that it has a few "errors" (mainly parts missing from LDD, noted here). If one was thinking about RECOLORING their 9398 with a different color scheme, the LDD model is perhaps the easiest way to see how it could be done.
