Nathanaël Kuipers's Concept Car
DLuders replied to Anio's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
We are all jealous of you, Anio! We can't wait to obtain Joshua Delahunty's building instructions to fully enjoy Nathanael Kuipers' masterpiece! -
@ sverre: To be 100% sure that you got the new, improved Linear Actuators, I would purchase them through Lego Direct. Go to http://Shop.Lego.com , and after sure you have the correct region and language for your country on the top-center). scroll down to the bottom to find the "Contact Us" link. Telephone Lego Customer Service and ask for 4 ea. of Part 4528037 (the Linear Actuator). I just looked up that number in the printed Parts List at the back of the 8043 Motorized Excavator's instruction booklet.

I received the following e-mail yesterday from Lego Direct: "Dear David, Thanks for getting in touch with us. We appreciate you letting us know about the discrepancy in the entry dates for the LEGO® Technic Challenge. I have forwarded the information to the web team and while I am unable to confirm the correct date at this time if you would like to enter I would submit my entry before the earlier of the two [August 21st]. I apologize for any inconvenience, but again thank you for letting us know! Please get in touch if you need anything else. It's free to call our experts at 1-800-835-4386 (Monday through Friday, 8am to 10pm and Saturday & Sunday 10am to 6pm EST) or you could go to www.LEGOshop.com. Happy building! @ blakeatron: Welcome to Eurobricks! In regards to your (expensive) new Unimog toy, just explain to your wife that you have to "have some fun" too. Reason with her -- would she rather you spend your money on Lego Technic, or go out drinking and carousing "on the town"? Given that choice, I'm sure she would rather see you at home where she can keep an eye on you building the Unimog all day long!

Help on some parts
DLuders replied to nilson's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
@ nilson: Welcome to Eurobricks! hrontos made some LDD Shock Absorbers on this Eurobricks post. -
Yes, it is feasible. I (for one) am not "hung up" on using 100% Lego all the time. The "Lego purists" out there may object, but it's YOUR model. Go for it!

@ Gekke Ted: If you look at the parts shown on this Bricklink search page, you could consider pinning the 2989 "Technic, Brick 1 x 4 with Bumper Holder" parts onto the Technic Treads, and then slipping the 70961 "Technic Rubber Bumper 2 x 4" parts onto the bumper holders:

Here is a PDF document that has Lego Dimensions; scroll down to the bottom to see the Technic holes. The internal hole diameter is 4.8 mm.

vkyopwnsall posted a 6-image Flickr photoset of "The MRA {Micro Robot Arm] is the smallest robot arm with 5 DOF [Degrees of Freedom], a removable attachment, and all of its electronics in its base. Only 3 DOF are motorized, but the MRA's absence of linear actuators etc. allows for an impressive range of motion." DLuders replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@ le60head: When one clicks on the link you provided, we see a Bulgarian website asking for a login. The limit for attaching files to your post is 150k (not 3.61k, unless you already used 146k of your 150k allotment). We can't find the .lxf file link, and many people don't understand Bulgarian. Could you post the .lxf file here? -
vkyopwnsall posted a 6-image Flickr photoset of "The MST001 Micro Scout Tank is the smallest possible full R/C tank. Powered by two M-Motors and featuring a 1:0.6 gear reduction for added torque, the MST001 can scout anywhere with ease. With a size of only 8x5x3.5 inches, the tank is almost unnoticable!" [NOTE: His reference to a "Micro Scout" has nothing to do with the Lego 32344c02 "Micro Scout" unit: ]

vkyopwnsall posted a Flickr photoset of his MCB [Micro Cargo Biped] -- "the smallest walking Power Functions biped possible. It does not turn, but it still walks! Powered by an M-Motor." The battery box is attached via a tether. There are six photos on that photoset, and here is one image showing the walking mechanism:

Airsoft LiPO
DLuders replied to Sharon's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I did a Google search for that battery, and found this article on the Airsoft Megastore, which says: "The all-new Tenergy 7.4v ultra high discharge (20C discharge rate!) 1600mah mini LiPO battery represents the next generation of Airsoft power sources. Because of its sky-high discharge rate and compact size (smaller than an 8.4v mini), it is able to offer MORE POWER than a 12-Volt NiMH battery with HALF the size and a THIRD of the battery cells. It features a competitively high storage capacity as well at 1600mah." "While the common misconception is that Lithium Polymer batteries will wear out a gun more quickly and with higher severity than a standard NiCad or NiMH battery source, this is not true, as LiPO batteries simply allow your rifle to have a faster rate of fire, (i.e. 20 rounds per second vs. 12 rounds per second running on standard battery packs), and therefore you will reach the effective life of your gears much FASTER than running on stock. A perfect metaphor is: - Car A has a 300 HORSEPOWER motor, which allows it to go constantly at 100 miles per hour [THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF AN AEG RUNNING ON A STANDARD POWER SOURCE] - Car B has a 500 HORSEPOWER motor, which allows it to go constantly at 150 miles per hour [THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF AN AEG RUNNING ON A LIPO POWER SOURCE] - If both cars had the same tires (both guns have same quality gears/gearbox), car B would be able to wear out the tires faster because it is running at a much faster rate." @ Sharon: If one used this Airsoft LiPO battery on Lego Power Functions motors, it could void the warranty (since they may be running at (20/12)ths faster rpms). If you are making a Lego Dragster, I suppose that short bursts of speed would be OK. What do you want to use this LiPO battery for? -
8043 Excavator digging range?
DLuders replied to sed6's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Conchas' TechnicBRICKS review of the standard 8043 Motorized Excavator construction has a few photos showing the full range of the digging bucket. Scroll to the bottom of that page to see them. If you want to increase the 8043's range through modifications, consider Out of Sight's "CHEAP and QUICK 8043 Enhancements!" -
Lubrificate Gears?
DLuders replied to leo81's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
On this Eurobricks post, tusty said he had good luck with the Silicone spray on his Lego 8043 set. On this Eurobricks post, Out of Sight said he preferred Silicone Oil for his 8043. 5150 Lego suggested using RC Gear Oil (from hobby shops). It are designed for plastic gears revving at high speeds. -
Shine/ SInine posted these two large pictures of his "Bluejacket" creation on his Flickr photostream. His full gallery is at http://www.majhost.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=250502 . As Shine originally posted, the LDD .lxf file can be downloaded off of Brickshelf here.

On his Flickr photostream, "EDWW day_dae" (esteemedhelga) posted these pictures of Lego Technic creations being shown at BrickFair 2011 this weekend (August 6-7) near Washington, D.C., USA. The AFOL convention started on Thursday, before the crowds arrived and blocked the view. We know that Paul Boratko (Crowkillers) brought a lot of displays. In the last picture, the placard says that "Full High Quality 200+ page Instructions with Full Parts List Prepared by Joshua Delahunty for the Nathanael Kuipers Concept Car coming soon to http://www.crowkillers.com ."

Do you think that The Lego Group will ever produce a Power Functions "Small" motor? It could be a replacement for the 5119 "9V Micromotor" (shown in red below), which was used in 9 different sets from 1993-2001. The Power Functions system was introduced 4 years ago, and the 9V Micromotor is quite rare and prone to seizing up. Do you think that a new PF "Small" motor would be useful for modern Lego Technic sets? If so, in what application(s) would you use it? It's light weight and compact size could allow motors to be mounted on the ends of booms, inside the chassis of small cars, etc.... With the existing names, one wonders if TLG intends on "filling in the gaps" in their Power Functions motor lineup: XL -- [Large?] -- MEDIUM -- [small?]

"Big Earl" looks impressive! -
jaymzwlkp posted this YouTube video of his extensive Lego Technic set collection. It is interesting to see the models side-by-side (for scale comparison); there are both studded and studless models spanning many years. Maybe he's trying to match Blakbird's collection! Photos are on jaymzwlkp's Brickshelf gallery. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRQNcQG4xww
