WIP: Superbe, a French 80 gun Ship of the Line
BrickPerfection replied to BrickPerfection's topic in Pirate MOCs
I moved the entire ship down into the garage because i lacked space in my room. Because of the winter i havent worked all too much on it, but i improved the colourscheme a bit and partly build the upper gundeck. However I will soon start all over on this project, so everything will be scrapped and rebuild soon. Look here please EDIT: here are some last pictures. Regards Perfectionist -
Hi there! Im planning to completely reconstruct my massive WIP Superbe since i never was quite satisfied with the 2x2 gunports. And 3x3 didnt work in that scale, at least not with 80 guns. A major influence towards this decision was the enormous sucess that Captain Blackmoor had on his Fourageux In a nutshell, his ship which is about 15% smaller than the Superbe, looks WAY better although the techniques used are much simpler.... Of course the scale will also change, I'm planning to build it in true minifigure scale, which is roughly 1:40 Old dimension are: 152 studs long (waterline) and 36,5 studs wide New dimensions will be around 190 studs long (waterline) and 45,5 studs wide This gives a width/lenght ratio of 1:4,16 which is pretty good imo. Well the reason I made a new thread for this is that i can't decide on the colourscheme and since I don't know so many people with great knowledge about historic ships or Lego in real life, I ask here, where the most competent shipbuilders are around. So I made 12 drafts in LDD; the spacing between the 3x3 gunports is accurate; it's 7 studs horizontally and 5 studs vertically. Since there is bo tumblehome yet, the height might decrease a bit on the real thing. EDIT: I worked out 3 more schemes heavily based on feedback narrowing the options a lot, so here are they. I named them A-C so that there's no irritation with the first 12. Personally, I'm leaning towards A and B. Actually I might pick B EDIT2: This is going to be the final colourscheme: Thanks to all the kind replies. Best Regards Perfectionist

WIP: Achille and Guerrière, French Frigates of 28 guns
BrickPerfection replied to BrickPerfection's topic in Pirate MOCs
Hey there, I'm back! Sorry I didn't post for so long, but I had some troubles that kept me from building. In addition i moved my Legos down in a garage since they simply took too much space in my room and well it's a bit cold there in the winter I'm also sorry I missed the Community build, well I guess I'll build a shipyard someday anyway... The progress on this pics is from December, i haven't worked on the frigates since then. Basically the Lego part is finished, I'm just having trouble with the rigging: I dont like the colour of the string I bought and I CGH didn't just want to use the CGH standard method but try something different, besides i used different parts to tie the ropes on. Ok, so here they are; the headrails have been reworked and look way better now imo: A view from the side reveals that the red line runs straight now which I think looks better: The two sterns; nameplates are still missing, I'll add them to the black spots as soon as I have the rigging done: The rowboats are optional, I just put them on the Achille on a plate to see what they look like: The Guerrière's figurehead fitting to the white ornaments: And the figurehead of the Achille: Another shot of the Guerrière's stern: Actually I should be learning for my final school exams in about 2 weeks, so I don't have time for building until May. -
Erdbeereis - 2 SlyOwl - 1 Erdys MOC really stands out for me, but the awesome fire and minifig action of SlyOwl is great as well.

Hey that's a great idea! May I do the 32x32 shipyard? I would really like to if possible

This was the most difficult voting for me since so many of these entries are simply outstanding! I therefore had to spread my 7 points for the first time: For the overwheliming overall impression, nice ideas and great water: I Scream Clone - 3 Quite a cool remake: kris kelvin - 1 Remarkable landsacaping: Derfel Cadarn - 1 Best shipyard I've seen so far and nice hull technique: maydayartist - 1 Good story and using (almost) all Sigfigs: Cap'n Blackmoor - 1 Good luck to all that took part (and to the above esspecially ) -

Spanish Imperial Galleon - Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion
BrickPerfection replied to Bonaparte's topic in Pirate MOCs
As far as I know, the "Nuestra Senora de la Conception" was the Treasure ship captured by Francis Drake on his first major journey in march 1579. Actually I must say that the idea of using the lower part of the new style hull pieces for the stern is an extremely good one and also looks great here , but I'm slightly disappointed since I recently started a 6midsections ship using this idea - only that you were quicker What i like best about the ship are the sails which seem simply perfect, just the way they need to be. When I was a child I always wanted to build something like this, but without the help of Bricklink and with comparatively limited skills back then I've failed to meet my expectations. From this background, I'm even more impressed with your work. Some observations: -The lanterns apear to be Blackmoor ones -I don't like the figurehead very much. The helmet is a brickforge one, though I done think the ancient theme fits very well to a spanish ship of the 16th century. The figure's torso seems wrong to me, mostly due to the blue color. It also lacks legs I think. -The rudder (hinges) is a fairly nice construction. May I copy it for the Superbe? -The Lego Armarda flag on the 3rd mast (it isnt called mizzenmast on a four master, is it?) seems not very harmonic to me -I also feel the standard, non MOC anchors too small -At least the captains cabin would deserve a interior I think Though the overall impression I have while looking at this creation is a extremely good one. @Derfel Cardarn: I do agree that there should be more ships like this one on the forums. I sometimes considered building a galleon, however I'm already building three ships (+1 mostly identical sistership) at the moment and also something land based, so i don't have capacities. What could be really nice would be a "build a 16th century ship contest" after PTVII has finished. -
Nice. I like how you did the space helmet of Captain Zaster using an aquarium brick, rubbers and two visors. Good idea me thinks. Perfectionist

Wow this is awesome and very realistic looking indeed. It makes me regret concentrating on shipbuilding in a way, but that's just my problem. Your MOC's awesome. I esspecially like they way you did the rocks; not always seeming straight which gives the a very natural appeareance. Though I wonder, classic castle doesn't seem to belong to Eurobricks? So the content is probably also on another site? Perfectionist

Good review, showing every aspect that matters of this set in detail. I think your rating is fair, though I see it as a problem that there are more F1 sets of other teams. Although this doesn't directly affect this one, I'd reduce the playability points a bit since having only Ferari is really boring. Without other teams contesting they also can't really have a victory! But I have to admit that I'm rather intesrested in MOCs than sets, so my knowledge of how a product range can affect the rating of a single set of it is really limited. Best Regards Perfectionist

Very nice idea, it is now understandable without reading all the explanations, which is always nice. The floor is indeed nice, I also like the dentist's chair a lot. Though what's really best about this MOC is the idea behind it. Given that probably everyone on this forum has at least once experienced pain at the dentist, you'll probably get a lot of sympathy, which is good for the voting In my opinion the improvements you've made really lifted this entry from a very average one (since it seemed quite confusing) to one of the best in the "small category". Good luck with the content Perfectionist

This entry certainly is a very nice one. Nonetheless I think there is still room for improvement: The ship's hull desperately needs a tumblehome, it is screaming for it. Since it has no interior and no big need for sturdiness, I would even go so far to design it using tiles on top of either horizontal hinges on a frame or attached to bent 3mm tubes. I think that could look fairly impressive and make the ship look rather cravel-built instead of clinker-built. That's my suggestion. Perfectionist

You live in Belgium, don't you? They have pretty much the slowest internet connections in the European Union down there... To the resizing: I think it can only be done by editing the pics on your computer BEFORE uploading them. I felt that is something rather difficult to learn from the tutorials; it took me quite a while myself. Unfortunately it can take quite a while when all the uploaded pics are too large; have to be deleted, resized, uploaded again and than deeplinked... Correct me, if I'm wrong Perfectionist
-
EDIT: arr, only 2nd Unfortunately, your Brickshelf isn't yet public. But I happened to see some of your rather large pics before Since deeplinking seems to work for you, I'd suggest to resize them to 800x600 with a program like Microsoft paint (which pretty much everybody has); then upload them to Brickshelf. To what I saw of your MOC: This is way better than what I have expected following the WIP pics you posted in the Tutorial Thread! Your rigging is great as are the sails. I'd be amazed if that was mine (the Achille has none yet ) What I enjoyed even more were the wonderful propotions of your ship; although it is a 2-decker it didn't seem to high in relation to its width at all. (Regarding the height of the side, it should actually be possible to fit a full interior on each gundeck in such a ship; I'll have to try that out at some point. ) The stern seems very harmonic; giving the hull a very elegant shape and adding to the sweet propotions I mentioned above. Even though your cholourscheme is the result of a compromise (since you had only SES hull parts), I really really like it! It seems so unique since I've never seen it before, still seems decently realistic (although it in fact isn't) and all the colours fit very well together. Given the trouble I had with finding the right colours recently, I must congratulate you at this point. Another point that I found rather nice is that you fitted guns! I must say that was there is one thing I don't like so much about a typical CGH ship, it's probably the absence of such weapons or "teeth". The working capstan is again rather nice, using surprisingly simple parts (which is good). What I didn't like very much was the figurehead: It certainly lacks a lot of detail. Improving it should be rather easy since it doesn't affect the rigging. I'd suggest using chrome parts or some from Brcikforge (like in the tutorial) if you can. I'm also not a big fan of grey decks, although they were used on the Lego sets BSB and SES; I'd prefer tan or - even more - tiles. But this may be a matter of opinion. Certainly a very nice ship and frontpage worthy, alone regarding the rigging. You just need to fix the picture issue. Best Regards Perfectionist

Wow, your stairs on the poop deck look absolutely amazing, I have never seen something as nice as this before. Surely, the tiling adds a lot to the improvements you've made. I feel it always adds a touch of realism and makes it look so much more like a actual ship! The widening of the hull also is a major improvement I think. When I first saw pics of the Phantom MkI, I thought it would be build on prefab hull pieces in a way because it seemed so narrow. The stern seeems rather nice to me, given that it is preliminary, I expect it to get much better even. One issue is that your ships generally looks a bit squarish which I think is a result of the techniques you used for building the hull; you might get better at this point but I doubt that you can make the hull smoothly curving. But since it's Lego, this isn't so much an issue to me. Your overall design doesn't seem to focus on historical accuracy anyway, but on good looks. Here ,in my opinion, the Phantom is getting better and better. Best Regards Perfectionist

WIP: Superbe, a French 80 gun Ship of the Line
BrickPerfection replied to BrickPerfection's topic in Pirate MOCs
That's actually a very nice idea! Although I ordered the pitchfork for 6$ at BL, I'll probably get the one from Brickforge at some point the pearl gold things on the arms also look rather nice to me though I don't really like the tiny crown which is in the hair or the blue mermaid part. Thanks to you, Mr Tiber. Best Regards Perfectionist -
WIP: Achille and Guerrière, French Frigates of 28 guns
BrickPerfection replied to BrickPerfection's topic in Pirate MOCs
I changed the ornamental line to red; I think the colourscheme issue is sorted now since it looks much better! Now let me answer to some comments which have partly been posted before the update: Unfortunately, I haven't yet found any space to build them into. Here's a top view on the head: This is how toilets looked historically (on the HMS Trincomalee, the only napoleonic ship still in its original state): I don't think so. I don't know much about your skill of MOCing or English, but what you said didn't seem to make sense to me since the preliminary design had exactly the same dimensions as the final one; only the decorations were added and slits closed. If you look carefully on the bird's eye view of the topdeck, you might notice how harmonic the stern integrates into the overall shape. It is 13 studs wide. At its widest point, the ship measures 14 (the hull parts 12). I think it is all right like that. If you meant the slope of the stern, it is rather too less than too much compared to historic designs. The masts are still preliminary. I've not yet found a solution that does'nt use any prefab. mast pieces, but I'm working on it now. I think the colourscheme suffered rather from the yellow line not really fitting to the red stripe on the gunports, which has been fixed. I quite like the blue colour at the bow and don't plan to change it. Best Regards Perfectionist -
WIP: Achille and Guerrière, French Frigates of 28 guns
BrickPerfection replied to BrickPerfection's topic in Pirate MOCs
Now this is a major update and it's supposed to be quite stunning. UPDATE: Note that I changed the yellow line to red for improving the colourscheme: How it looked previously: Note that this construction doesn't only look realistic, it is also decently stable and functional. Note I used a customized brick frome Chromebricks for the cathead. Feedback on it is appreciated. The masts are still preliminary; the hull pretty final. A frontal view on the bow reveals the unique headrails. Note the updated figurehead. It is more "warlike" now. I also gave her some white pants since yellow represents naked. Feeback on it is welcome. A bird's eye view shows that the decks have been tiled entirely. Note the nice shape of the hull and the tumblehome. I esspecially like the galleries. The ship has a complement of 30 guns though the bow chasers don't count for classification, resulting in nominally 28 guns. 4 of them are placed on swivels. My unique swivel gun design: My solution to realistic looking grates, using the back of 1x1 headlight bricks: The steering wheel which will feature a rope around it for decorative porposes. A function isn't possible due to the modular structure, but the Superbe will probably feature one. The stern looks rather harmonic; integrates into the hull as it should : The deck construction is rather ingenious; it is in one piece although curved both horizontally and vertically allowing for a full rigging while maintaining the modular structure. Unfortunately the levers fall off rather easily. Note that the deck isn't attached by studs, instead it rests on 3 2x2 tiles which are put on the masts. The updated capatain's cabin. The mizzenmast was moved 2 studs in front due to the rigging. There have been significant structural improvemts on the stern allowing a modular deck. It is also way sturdier now. The 3mm tube connects the galleries to the stern. All is based on 10 studs (2 for each gallery; 6 for the stern itself), all on jumperplates. They are below the furniture. The doors are preliminary and will be replaced with 3x4x1 white doors (1 brick higher). Not how they open just above the cannon's wheel: A closeup on what the rest of the gundeck looks like. The supports are solely for optical reasons - and for holding the lanterns This is the current status of the Achille's sistership Guerriere (Engl. for warrior). Note the deck and how the hinges are placed to allow for a full interior: As you see, I moved on quite fast here; there will be another minor update on the masts and some details (possibly something based on feedback ) before I start with the rigging. If you have questions on the construction, I could post some pictures while building the Guerriere, though the "Superbe" has first priority now. As stated already, comments are very welcome. -
Well, I really don't want to offend in any way, but when looking at some of the other 8x8 entrys ("Tell me a story Grandpa" for example) they seem so much more sophisticated in both their build and background story. I don't think your entry is bad, but it does seem a little boring; though i must note that when I tried to find a motive for a entry, I found out how hard it really is to come up with something original. For a island, a larger scale might have also been better I guess. Possibly with spectacular landscaping techniques for the water and the beach (thinking on Derfel Cardarn's MOCs) Just my thoughts Perfectionist

Ahh, the Achille will need rigging very soon, probably in a week when I have build up the masts completely. I'll try to stick to the tutorial to get practice doing this (I've never even thought about something as amazing as a realistic rigging on a Lego ship previously to be honest); then I might redo it with my own touch, so that it fits to the overall look of that ship. Since I've not tried doing something like this ever before, I depend heavily on your tutorial (though the kind Admiral Béjaune has offered his help). Perfectionist

Vintage Minifig V3 contains a BLUECOAT!
BrickPerfection replied to Commodore Hornbricker's topic in LEGO Pirates
My thoughts exactly. The white seems to be milky-transparent in a way, at least different from the regular one. But since my bluecoats are almost 20 years ols, white colour in general might look too much different when aged to compare. I have to say that i was quite shocked by the price as well. Given the poor quality, it's just not justified. -
The Pirates and the NXTfied Theater (by NeXTSTORM)
BrickPerfection replied to Capt. Kirk's topic in LEGO Pirates
That really is impressive. I wouldn't think about building somethink like this, but apparently it works. They're so much more possibilities for awesome MOCs it seems. It just depends on what one builder is interested in, and on his skill and funding abilities of course. This one seemed to have plenty of the last two. -
Lego Pirates Decal and Weapon Problems
BrickPerfection replied to curtisrlee's topic in LEGO Pirates
The issue with some weapons being made of softer material is as old as the pirate theme itself. The color wearing off is something rather disturbing though, i've never heard of it before. Since i don't play with my minifigs ( I have them for representative purposes) this problem isn't a very serious one to me, though i am quite concerned with quality issues getting more and more. Given that Lego did announce to produce in China in the future, I don't think it'll get better. Also, surveys showed that kids don't care so much about quality, but their parents do care about prices! Now that Lego lost its patent, quality might get even less to lower prices, although this is pure speculation and will hopefully never happen. Perfectionist
