  1. I was curious to know what the old LEGO Architecture Big Ben set (21013) would look like with the new roman numeral clock faces introduced in Disney Castle (71040), so I placed a Bricklink order. For the curious, here is the result: One could certainly wish for a more appropriate base color than reddish brown, but on the whole I think it's an improvement!
  2. Thanks very much! A not-huge apartment and lots of LEGO leads to space-saving display strategies. :) I often pare down sets I like to smaller dimensions for shelf purposes. So, for example... --> --> --> Perhaps future Disney waves will inspire some more mini-vignettes.
  3. I didn't pick up the entire Disney CMF line, or even most of it, but I couldn't resist snagging the minifigures from two of my favorite Disney movies: ALICE IN WONDERLAND and PETER PAN. My goal for these mini-vignettes was twofold: (a) showcase both minifigures in scenes evocative of their respective films, and (b) for each minifigure pair, take up a footprint no larger than two CMF bases (that is, 4x6). Here's what I came up with: Strictly speaking, of course, Alice did not have her bottle and cookie when she met the Cheshire Cat, and Neverland's Skull Rock was a lot larger -- but of course, I wasn't going for literal representations here. :) If anyone else has done Disney vignettes at this small scale, I'd love to see them!
  4. My Millennium Falcon MOD from earlier this year: More views and an LDR file here.
  5. Wow! I was NOT expecting the fully tricked-out interior! That is ... mind blowing. (Also, it's a comparatively small detail, but love the use of the two-toned legs for the Imperial officers. First time I've seen that done.)
  6. What you see in Lord_Bloodwort's original post is the very first version of the Emperor! It appeared in a few sets from 2000-2002. The set in Lord_Bloodwort's photo is the tiny 7200 Final Duel I, which I also used as the basis for my early throne room vignettes. (My latest is a modified version of last year's 75093 Death Star Final Duel.) For the most movie-accurate look, I highly recommend the aforementioned spear gun solution! As has been observed, you can turn the figures' hands around and they will appear to be standing "at attention," with their arms at their sides rather than awkwardly held out in front of them. Here's a little mini-build I made a while back to show off the feature (though I have since replaced the dark bluish gray spear guns with flat silver versions):
  7. Like most, I love LEGO Harley Quinn! But I do NOT love the way the official sets have implemented her trademark carnival mallet. In all of the versions released to date, the handles are too small, the hammer ends are too oversized, and the gaps in the middle are distressingly obvious. I decided to try and come up with something a little more aesthetically pleasing by following these steps: 1. Begin with a 1x1 brick, modified with four side studs. 2. Attach a longer bar for the handle, so that it can be more easily held with two hands. 3. Use three 1x1 tiles to fill out the center. 4. Instead of 2x2 round bricks, use 2x2 round plates for the hammer barrel. 5. Add the 2x2 tiles to the ends. This works for both the black/red color scheme AND the reddish brown/tan color scheme. As a nifty bonus, using round plates instead of bricks lets you change up the colors to give the appearance of those bands you frequently see on traditional carnival mallets! Here's classic-outfit Harley modeling four variations for you: Here's another angle for a better sense of scale. These mallets are, IMO, still comically oversized without being ridiculous: Personally, I'm partial to variation #4. Here's Harley posing with a few of her fellow DC rogues... ...and facing off with a handful of familiar heroes... Hope you enjoy! And if anyone else would like to share their own rethought mallets here, I'd love to see them!
  8. I know I called this project "final," but I was inspired to revise it based on the appearance of a useful part from 75136 Droid Escape Pod that is NEW in light blue gray! Namely, the round half 3 x 6 plate with 1 x 2 cutout: I pilfered two of these from 75136 (without doing major damage) and used them to replace the four 3x3 curved plates I had been using. The new part gives the back of the Falcon a more accurate circular contour. It also exposed more of the dark bley I'd been using underneath, so I went ahead and "recolored" the model with more light bley. (Another side-effect of the part swap: those who want to restore the cheese slopes to the back rim of the Falcon can now do so -- though I felt they made it look a little too "busy," personally.) I've updated the main post with the results, but here's a quick look: Bonus droids vignette!
  9. In response to LEGODrongo01's request, I have added a LDR file (made with LDCad) to the bottom of the main post. If it gives anyone trouble, please let me know!
  10. Thanks very much! I'll take that as high praise, given the extraordinary attention to detail in your AT-AT thread!
  11. This is brilliant, especially the use of the triangle parts at the front! Gives me a nostalgic flashback to my old Hasbro Walker toy, though yours probably has superior proportions.
  12. Thanks for the kind words, everyone! I want to add that I find using an 8x5 base for builds like this very aesthetically pleasing. The proportion is 1.6:1, which is close to the "Golden Ratio" of 1.618:1, and it seems to be ideal for showcasing two-figure vignettes. I used the same base size for Gollum & Bilbo Baggins and Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson, and I think they look rather nice lined up on the shelf together.
  13. Thanks for the kind words! I actually really enjoy working on an 8x5 base. The proportion is VERY close to the "Golden Ratio," and it also seems to be ideal for showcasing two-figure vignettes. For example, I used the same scale for Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson and Grand Admiral Thrawn & Captain Pellaeon. Here they are all lined up on the shelf.
  14. Ha! I did think about attempting Rukh. Short legs, plus a simple tunic, hood and dagger would probably suffice. A "purist" Noghri head would be difficult, but I was considering Chima crocodiles (for the "needle teeth") and gorillas (for the squashed, upturned nose). In the end, though, I decided that Rukh's place was skulking in the shadows, and my little build is just too small for shadows!
  15. Yes, the new Rebels battle pack is definitely an option, provided you don't mind the horizontal line through the eyes. If you decide to go for the older Cad Bane head, be sure to get the version without the facial tech! I got mine -- the head alone, not the entire minifigure -- for just a few dollars on eBay.
  16. That's very flattering! I don't have any instructions, but I've added a LDR file (made with LDCad) to my original post. I can also offer a few "exploded" views that perhaps will help: [EDIT - That tan 1x1 plate sticking out in the below two pics is in the wrong place! It popped off and I wasn't paying attention when I clipped it back on. It ought to go NEXT to the light bley 1x1 plate, not below it.] Most of the mods are pretty straightforward. The center forward section is mounted on a 1x2/4x4 bracket that sits under a 1x2 door rail plate, which in turn is under a 2x2 plate with center stud (to hold the dish/binoculars). The trickiest part is the cockpit. Here's a closer view of that: You'll note that the plates and brackets between the double cheese slopes are positioned base-to-base and are not connected to each other directly. The fact that the cockpit piece grips both brackets is what holds them together. This would be horribly fragile, EXCEPT for the fact that the surrounding pieces lock them into place without any possibility of movement, especially the dark bley angled plate as seen (detached from the underside) here: This is an unconventional technique, but it seemed to be the best way to get the shape I wanted. And as I say, once all the pieces are locked into place, it's as solid as a rock. Good luck with your build!
  17. I don't really collect the microfighter line, but I couldn't resist snapping up one of my favorite Star Wars vehicles, the Millennium Falcon (75030). I just loved the concept of having this iconic vessel in something like chibi form! And then I started to tinker. And tinker some more. About a dozen iterations later, here is the final result: For reference, here's the before... And the after... I am calling this a MOD, since the official set was clearly the starting point. But much of the structure and many of the details have been entirely changed. Notably: * Minifig seat replaced by scale cockpit. (Tricky SNOT work, as I wanted it to be angled top AND bottom.) * Flick-fire missiles replaced by scale "gun turret" (dish and binoculars). * Starboard hatch added, same position and scale as port hatch. * Radar dish moved forward to more closely resemble original proportions. * Entirely new SNOT engine array. * New underside with actual landing gear. * Many dark bley parts replaced with light bley. Minor tan accents added. * Reworked area between mandibles, sloping symmetrically on both dorsal and ventral sides. * Custom-built stand. And Chewbacca, because it's just not the Falcon without Chewbacca! Here are some additional angles. Needless to say, this thing is highly swooshable! Here's a better look at the new SNOT engines. Incredibly basic, but it works beautifully! And one final angle on the whole package together: EDIT - For anyone (like LEGODrongo01 below) who would like some assistance making a similar MOD, here is a LDR file that I made using LDCad. Just click the image: EDIT 2 - Model updated with the NEW 2016 "Light Bluish Gray Plate, Round Half 3 x 6 with 1 x 2 Cutout" from 75136 Droid Escape Pod. This replaces the two 3x3 plates with curve for a rounder contour. (I also replaced most of the dark bluish gray plates with light bluish gray.)
  18. Thanks, Venkefedo! Very interesting connections, and I look forward to seeing what comes of it! Glad you like the chair. It's very loosely inspired by the chair from the Thrawn Trilogy comics adaptations. (Plus, I had a lot of leftover tan slopes from my reduced-scale MOD of 75093! ) Other MOC-ers have done more faithful renditions, but I wound up wanting something smaller that would fit with the desktop scale of the vignette.
  19. Thanks! I had not heard that rumor, but it would certainly be nice! Thrawn is too good of a character not to resurrect in some form or other.
  20. Now that the old Star Wars Expanded Universe is officially defunct, it seems highly unlikely that we'll ever get an actual minifig of fan-favorite Grand Admiral Thrawn. Like many people, however, I saw the possibility for a satisfying "purist" custom version of the character (overlooking the rank pips, of course) when the exclusive Yularen figure came out last year. Since then I've since seen numerous variations on this idea, but I thought I'd try my own hand at it. Thrawn's head is Cad Bane, while Pellaeon is Yularen's head on the Star Destroyer captain's body from 75055. I wanted the design of the uniforms to match, and these do! The rest of the vignette is very minimalist, with a window borrowed from 75093. (And yes, I realize that the gold epaulets on Thrawn are not mentioned in the novels, and that there is some debate about gloves. I decided to use the original novel covers as my inspiration.) EDIT: Updated with official Thrawn minifigure plus black boots:
  21. While I enjoyed 79000 "Riddles for the Ring," I wanted something a bit more compact for desk display. So I came up with this little vignette. (Apologies for the dust!)
  22. Yes, they didn't waste any time! Ordered on the 24th, shipped on the 25th, arrived on the 29th! (And thanks!) (BTW, in case anyone is wondering, that is Dwalin's cape from 79003.)
  23. A fabulous diamond! A discarded copy of The Financial News! A mysterious red stain! Sherlock Holmes, the great detective, expounds the details of the case to his faithful companion Dr. Watson. I actually built this MOC some time ago, but I simply couldn't resist sweetening it with a brand new calabash "Gentleman's Pipe" from BrickWarriors. EDIT: Alternate angle...
  24. Excellent! Looking forward to it!
  25. This is gorgeous! I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were an official model. (And yes, files or a parts list would be terrific if you ever have the time/inclination!)
