Flight using Lego
Heppeng replied to anton1678's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think fixed wing is the way to go, Unfortunately I don't think it would make a good wing. Its too small on its own, and the amount of lego required to hold multiples of them together would add weight and increase drag. There also only appears to be 3 of them on bricklink at the moment. However, I have not at the moment got a solution I am happy with for a tail plane on my aircraft, and they might fit the bill for that, but I have to establish the viability of the main wing before I get that far!- 157 replies

A Lego 0 Gauge Scale LNER A3 Flying Scotsman Steam Locomotive
Heppeng replied to jamesed_1971's topic in LEGO Train Tech
The XL is a slow running motor, the Emerald Night actually has to gear up so that the axles turn faster than the motor, and even then it is a bit slow. The arrangement you have is similar to a traditional model railway loco, which has a fast motor and needs the gear reduction a worm provides. You need a straight spur gear train, possibly geared to increase speed rather than reduce, that can bring the drive up high enough to be able to fit a pair of 1:1 bevel gears without fouling frame or wheels. You should then have the drive turned through 90 degrees somewhere where you need it to fit the XL motor- 5 replies

Nope. this wing uses only lego that came out of an injection mold, and some lego string.- 157 replies

Flight using Lego
Heppeng replied to anton1678's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I had an Eureka moment last night. I have in my head a design for a very large (2m span) wing, thats ultra lightweight - at least for lego, strong, and can be made in to an aerofoil design, specifically for creating high lift at low speed. I am hoping that when I get home at the weekend I may be able to put together a proof of concept design. However, since I did not anticipate entering in to the world of brick aviation this week, its quite possible that I might not have all the parts I need....- 157 replies

Flight using Lego

Do remember it was absolutely 100% proven using all the well established formulas that it was impossible for a bumble bee to fly, because its wings were too small to generate the required lift. Just as well no one could tell the bee...- 157 replies

I never thought that I would ever buy lego soley as an investment. Until last week, all my lego was bought to be built and enjoyed, any increase in value of the sets I owned was a bonus. When looking to buy some extra track for my 60050, I discovered that lego were selling it at 0.05p each. Current price on bricklink around £1.20 upwards. Now thats a return on investment I just could not pass on so I bought 1200 pieces for a total outlay including postage of £70. Lego have now changed the price to 0.95p - which is still a bargain! I have yet to see any evidence of a price crash on bricklink, but even if there is I would expect it to be fairly short lived. It will take a little while to sell, but thats surely going to beat any of the other Lego investments talked about here!

With other toys thats understandable, they either stay smashed or at the very least its a time consuming repair job. With lego however you just reassemble... And remember lego is a toy, my old lego picked up plenty of wear and scratches mostly through me having an awful lot of fun playing with it, and only the occasional smash when I was young. And in reality thats exactly what lego was intended for, to have fun with, which is how I interprit the above video!!

Flight using Lego
Heppeng replied to anton1678's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
No he did not, he was kind enough to provide solid mathematical proof that lego model number 9396 could not be made to fly, not that no lego could fly, which is no surprise because 9396 was never meant to fly anyway. A model that was specifically designed to fly from the outset would be completely different mathematically, and as ZBLJ has shown he is nearly there, albeit some way to go, but close enough that a good deal of stubborness and persistance may well pay off.- 157 replies

It has enough though, I pull a heavy 4 coach train with it, but that has been enough to break one gear already!

Was I writing in invisible ink when I said rubber bands? Make one of these out of lego and you will stand at least half a chance of making it fly:- 157 replies

And they are made from 100% lego?, or have you somehow missed that what we are talking about here is a lego plane (or car) on a lego forum, that isn't going to be in any way comparable to your hotshot or 150km/h propeller plane?- 157 replies

Wow. I love the 12V motors, although I think the results reflect the amount of grip available, which of course is increased by the added weight. The old 12V trains were built pretty heavy, and the last 4.5V one had those massive batteries on top together with the low gearing which made it unstoppable!

And as an RC car is far heavier than a plane will ever be, it will do more damage to your ankle than a plane could possibly do to your head...- 157 replies

I was wondering how the original 12V motors compared to the otherwise identical 4.5V motors for speed?

Flight using Lego
Heppeng replied to anton1678's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, I think its possible to make a 100% lego, heavier than air powered flight, that can take off from a standstill using only its own on board power. Just ditch the heavy motor and battery idea and use elastic bands, one end fixed, the other connected to the propeller, and wind it up! Just like the elastic band powered planes I had when I was a kid. Lots of lightweight power for a short time. Would probably fly just for 10-20 seconds, but flight is flight!- 157 replies

Update. Lego track came back in stock on Monday and my order has been paid for and proceesed. It sold out rather rapidly (I wonder why??!!)because by the afternoon it was shown out of stock again. Back in stock yesterday, still at 5p each. Price revised this morning to 95p, which is still much cheaper than the £1.67 price it was sold at before June 1st, and still cheaper than Bricklink/Ebay, especially when you consider the flat rate postage of £2. If you are interested the part id is 6070018 from Bricks and pieces.

Has anyone made a SNOT version of the classic train station?
Heppeng replied to rogul's topic in LEGO Train Tech
SNOT is not a standard, its a building technique - Studs Not On Top, which usually means using bricks on their sides. Is that what you mean? -

I scanned the sticker sheet before I built it, but there is one problem, the lego box stickers are printed on clear, and rely on the blue colouring of the tile to provide the colour. So on the scan they turn out almost all white. I suppose I could scan them once attached to the tile to get the blue, but its still not going to be the greatest of matches. However I asked customer service on Pick a brick and they are able to sell me a couple of extra sets which will be far better than anything I can reproduce.
