[MOC] Via Rail Canada - The Canadian - LEGO Ideas
zephyr1934 replied to NickLafreniere's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Very nice! Do keep in mind that no matter how good a train might be, if it does not have a licensed tie-in after hitting 10k votes it probably will not survive IDEAS to become a set. I would agree with the others about the small train wheels, operationally they are horrible, but Lego would go to normal train wheels anyway if it were accepted. Light gray wheel holders are the way to go for a set, but Lego is likely to go with black. From a set stand point could you make it so that 5-6 different passenger car builds were possible from the set but it only comes with enough parts for 2-3 cars per set? Could you post the photos to Flickr or similar then link more of them to this thread? Pros: The interior detailing throughout is impressive Cons: Massive side sticker or printed bricks on the nose. It might be possible to "brick build" the curve, but I would think the older livery (e.g., the second loco in dr_Spock's photo) would be better suited for a set I would try lowering the glass in the dome by one brick- 38 replies

That is probably the biggest issue of PF/PUP. Anyway, excellent solution. From a logistical perspective, do you have enough room to also get the PUP wires in/out with the top of the battery box? You know, if you flipped the color scheme around (white on the bottom) you might be able to hide the lowered the PUP in a 4 wide hood. It would be interesting to see what it looks like if you tried a varient where you added one more brick of height to the two hoods.

I was wondering what this comment was getting at until I looked back and saw... At first glance it ALMOST looks like those strings are riding on the axles in this photo, but when I look closer the roller bearings are set in the slots and the strings go over the slots Yes, it is probably brake rigging, mechanically linking the brake cylinder to the brake shoes (or in the case of the linked photo, perhaps hoses for the disc brakes)

Go Duq go! Let's get something good up now and spend the next few months figuring out what to replace it with.

That's looking really nice and an iconic Lionel accessory reborn. You might want to back-date the minifigs though, since hard hats and safety vets came along a few decades after the mechanical refrigerator put the ice houses out of commission. The choice of subject is great, we need more automation around the trains, and the implementation matches it, you've packed a LOT into a relatively small MOC. Great work!

Pets and trains, show em'. Cats vs. dogs in our hobby.
zephyr1934 replied to Coal Fired Bricks's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Oh smeg! People will think you are daft when you name the next one Cat. Maybe go with Frankenstein to be subtle. -
Why not do the EN like this for now (perhaps with track if someone can do that quickly) and then redo it in the same style every N months with a train MOC that was posted to the forum since the last banner was chosen? We can use some voting system or trust our moderator to choose. Oh, we probably should have some text in the left image like "Eurobricks" and "Train Tech" too.

I was thinking the same thing reading through the thread and then there you put it. Perhaps even have a new contest every 3-6 months to keep it fresh.
-
Great work! But I'm afraid you are going to put the gandy dancers out of work
-
Thank you!

What is happening? TrainTech and its topics have lost all their formatting and now have a banner "The Dragon's Den"
-
That's slick!

looking good

Nice job. That tipple looks like it could serve double duty and be used at a small mine for loading hopper cars

Excellent find! I had often wished USB chargers went beyond 5v since that could solve a lot of problems with off the shelf batteries. Turns out USB-PD does that. Looks like Qualcomm Quick Charge does too (my quick learning curve). Just need a battery that is within 16mm x 27mm x ??? to comfortably fit in a 4 wide hood. Keep us posted how your experiments proceed.

Here's another one that would be cool to implement in Lego, the Bowes Rwy of NE England. Wikipedia and YouTube of the last day of operation (look at all of that running with the trains, I bet a lot of limbs were lost in the operation of that line)

What would people want from a suspended railway set
zephyr1934 replied to Greenstar's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Not likely to happen at a large scale, there would have to be a lot of infrastructure (non-play value parts) to support the track. Might see something like this in a set over a short gap between towers or buildings but not likely to see it free-standing. Also, the clutch of lego probably would not hold up for a hanging system to meet their standards A couple of months ago someone posted a still image of a background from Ninjago that showed a suspended monorail though. I think it used some impossible build techniques (rails floating in air). Not to say it can't be done, I've seen some great MOCs over the years, I'm just saying that it is not likely to appear in a set.- 20 replies

What about 2xN bricks? If so, check out this thread on custom monorails and be ready to blow your mind. It goes from pretty simple to amazingly complicated, so if you only plan to skim it, start at the end and work backwards.

If you do not mind light blay, they did make the PF motor sides in that color. It might be worth seeing if you can get a pair of 5 long technic axles to work for the motor. The wheels might be a little loose but on the other hand it might work. Or you could try shaving down a 6 long technic axle so that it is exactly as wide as the motor wheels.

Ha ha, I said "wanting" not "needing" after I built my first long cars I was in deep want of large radius curves even though the train could handle R40's. Though As the train gets longer you might start experiencing drag, so maybe only build one or two cars at a time so you do not wind up with too much train for R40 curves

What a great start. It looks like the windows on the prototype are closer together than your MOC, I think you have one window every 3 studs, maybe try it with one window ever two studs? Just be careful, you're likely to find yourself wanting wide radius curves (grin)

Station Canopy - inspired by Copenhagen Central Station
zephyr1934 replied to brickostan's topic in LEGO Train Tech
That's a great build. Having two or three of those arches next to each other would capture the feel of many larger stations -
A great looking MOC that shows what can be done with a relatively small number of bricks... especially if it fits all of the PF components

There is an extensive set of "things to fix" on the EN in one of the old railbricks issues found here: https://brickmodelrailroader.com/index.php/download-railbricks/ (I don't have time right now to find which one but post back if you can't find it) The first thing I would try is temporarily disabling the cylinders by removing that 6 long technic liftarm. The technic axle "piston" might be binding.
