Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return

Throlar looked up suddenly, as if he had just remembered something. "Pereville, the fairy we found at the top of the tower, he said that Rosier's servants knew where the fairies that escaped her had fled to, I think I heard something about it being Eubric." "Arthur," said Throlar, "good of you to come." "Well, as much as I'd like that, as I'd said to Karie it's probably not going to be that sim..." "... Ahh!" said Throlar jumping into the air in a rather comical fashion, briefly grasping for a holy symbol before he realized he wasn't wearing one and settled for raising his shield between them instead. After a moment he calmed down and lowered the shield saying; "The universe is just determined to prove me wrong, isn't it? I suppose that might be a good thing in this particular instance, but still." "Don't know, that's what Boomingham told me, so that's what I'm telling you." -

Throlar hung his head, clearly affected by Euflear's story. But almost immediately he looked up again, as if something had piqued his interest. "Yes, that's more-or-less what came to my mind. Boomingham said his party spoke to Rosier and she referred to these imposters as 'dreamers'. However I don't think they're necessarily working together. Fary dust responds to the desires and commands of the fairies, so it's entirely possible that they arose spontaneously from Euflear's dreams and are acting on their own initiative." "Well, there's quite a lot to go over, does someone else want to give our party's story or shall I vomit forth the requisite information?" -

Throlar was torn. He desperately wanted to continue to pursue their quarry, thinking that if only they could capture them they would have their hands on potentially vital information, that this person was in and of themselves highly important, and that allowing them to get away would mean that Rosier would know of the defeat of their forces in Faerie. That worried him, as did the idea of allowing Rosier to go unopposed while him and his companions focused their attention elsewhere, a course of action that he was certain would allow the demon's plan to come to fruition. On the other hand, innocent people were going to be executed if something wasn't done. He sighed, remembering his words outside the tower, where he had advocated allowing the very person they were now pursuing to escape them in favor of saving the Fey One instead. He sighed, knowing that as much as he wanted answers he had, in some way, already committed to his current course of action there and then. And besides, he knew that allowing people to die when he could stop it wouldn't sit well with him in the end. Throlar follows the others. "I'd say I'd prefer to go through the sewers at the moment, we're less likely to encounter anyone that way. And if we do meet someone chances are they'll be Dark Druids rather than Paladins or Watchmen. I somehow feel better about fighting the servants of an archdemon then people who sincerely think they're helping to make this city a better place." -

"My apologies, I felt it would be faster and the idea of using a fire bomb to destroy plants seemed obvious. Clearly I should've thought this through a bit more." Throlar nodded in the direction of the newcomers. "Hello Matthias, nice to see you again, and Miss Bellanotte, how lovely it is to meet you at last." "I did, I clearly said 'Stand back, I'm going to throw a bomb!'. I even waited to give everyone a chance to get clear first. As for the water, the space it has to fill now is much larger than it was before so it shouldn't be a problem." Throlar nodded. "Good." "Well, it seems you've been very active, but we have some news for you, however, you should know that me and my party came here pursuing a servant of the archdemon Rosier, and I believe it is of the utmost imperative that we follow them at once. Oh, and that person over there is the Fey One, the real Fey One" Having said that, Throlar attempted to heal Dyric of his injuries. "I don't remember us having spoken before, and there are a number of people here I haven't met before, so allow me to introduce myself. My name is Throlar Wineghilm." Throlar then nodded to Elphaba. "Madam, would you mind dealing with the gnome and miss Shadeaux? Your gloves have properties that would make your ministrations more helpful to them than mine." -

"You did what? Pixie Dust?" He shook his head. "That's it. Stand back, I'm going to throw a bomb at it!" Throlar waited a few moments, giving everyone time to get clear, before throwing a fire bomb at the wall of roots. -

"While I am not averse to having some foreknowledge to aid us, and I admit that these are both things that need attention, unless Benji says otherwise then the most urgent thing on hand at the moment is finding the person who preceded us through this portal. This person is likely to have more information than us about what's going on here, and if we allow them to get away then they'll be able to warn their allies that we've destroyed Rosier's stronghold in the Faerie and freed the Fey One- pardon me, Euflear, from her grasp." He stopped, as if a thought just came to him. "You lot," he said, indicating the Hovels party, "you saw them go past didn't you? Tell me, did you get a good enough look at them to be sure that they were a Dark Druid?" -

"I'm sorry, Dasta... what?" Throlar shook his head. "Look, perhaps it would be better if each group gave a clear account in chronological order of what's happened since we last met rather than just giving out random snippets of incomplete information. This way one group isn't going to be blindsided by something the other group knew about already." "Nope, were sure she's physically here." "Nice to meet you both. And if you are willing madam I'd be honored if you'd teach me even a little of the art of broom riding." "On the contrary, we should find this person as soon as possible. Even if we defeat Rosier, if one of Rosier's cultists escapes then they could simply summon her again, rendering this whole affair little more than a delay for whatever plan Rosier has." "No, they went to check out the Dragonlord's- sorry, Cain's home. I heard something about the real Golden Dragon's tomb being there, so they were probably checking to see if the tomb had been opened. Though considering with where our two groups ended up who knows where they are now." -

"Well," said Throlar having seen that hostilities were not going to commence, "glad to see everyone is well, and it's very nice to meet you at last your highness." he said, addressing the Sand Queen with a slight nod. As he continued to speak he began to gingerly dismount the broom he had been floating atop during the last minute. "As everyone has seen fit to tell you we've had quite the adventu-" at this point he lost his grip and with a cry of "Dammit!" fell to the floor of the tunnel with a thump, Verkenner clattering to the ground beside him. "I should probable practice a bit more if I intend to continue using that." he said as he stood up and dusted himself off. "Oh, well as Karie has said we've encounter one of these people too. They may not be the real founders but they still fight better than any of us. One blow of his was able to knock Pretzel unconscious instantly. I'm glad to see you're not hurt." he nodded to Sküld, "Glad to see you're in one piece too miss." Throlar then cast his gaze over to Elphaba and Waldorf saying; "Now would you two kindly introduce yourselves and tell us how you came to join this merry band of renegades?" -

Throlar nodded in response. "One thing I've learned in Heroica," he said, "is that some people aren't worth arguing with, I'm glad you approve." He squinted down the tunnel. "I'm going to scout ahead," he said, "floating down on this," he patted the broomstick, "should be quieter than walking." With that he set off down the tunnel, keeping close to the sides and making as little noise from atop the broom as possible, trying to get close to the corner and listen in on whoever was around it. -

Throlar considered responding, fantasizing about making some witty and cutting remark that would make this fool shut up, but it wouldn't't do. He knew that no matter what he said the vainglorious idiot just wouldn't take any notice. So, repressing the urge to sigh in despair, he silently got out Verkenner and held the broom out by his side before letting it go, causing it to hover in the air. And then, without a word, he climbed on, seated himself, and rode it away through the portal. -

Throlar grinned at the ogre's remark. "True," he said, "Titaanese names can be rather difficult to pronounce for others. When I was younger I... may have caused a few diplomatic incidents due to my failure to grasp this." His countenance darkened at Skrall's next query however, and his only response was a terse "Ready." -

Throlar looked at Heckz for a long moment, contemplating wether or not to accept his handshake so that he could crush the man's fingers. Deciding that it wasn't worth it he very conspicuously didn't accept and said very slowly and deliberately; "Throlar Wineghilm, my name is Throlar Wineghilm. And for future reference, mispronouncing someone's name can be taken as a very dire insult where I come from." -

Throlar blinked. At this point he wasn't really surprised by someone he knew appearing out of thin air, in fact it was starting to become a bit routine. He briefly wondered if it really was the person he once knew, Heckz's eyes hadn't glowed like that last time they'd met. All doubts were put to rest however at the sight of the man before him vomiting profusely and then leaping into a ridiculously self-aggrandizing boast without skipping a beat. He sighed, his head bowing as his hand rose gently to meet it, and remained in this pose for an indeterminate amount of time. The only signs of life he displayed were his gentle swaying and and the occasional quiet, muffled "Why?". -

(WBD, when I say I'm nurturing someone, I mean I'm using the Nurturing job trait which the Unicorn's Horn grants me in place of healing when I use it. Since nurturing consumes ether to restore HP I need to know if I'm healing anyone with it or if ether is being consumed.) Throlar's face grew taut and reserved at the news he had just heard, though his eyes still flashed with cold fury, betraying his inner feelings. "Then we must make all haste and find Rosier at once. Do you know where they are?" -

Upon seeing this spectacle of horror Throlar briefly paused in shock before rushing over and attempting to use the Unicorn's Horn to nurture the person before him. Those who saw his face at this point saw that it crossed by an expression of mingled horror and pity-and a smoldering rage at the monstrosity of the being that could do this. "Take all the time you need." said Throlar with a nod toward her. "I'd offer to help you but I need to attend to this person." -

"Very well then, we'd best be on our way. If you need someone to help you walk feel free to ask." Throlar blinked. At this point he wasn't really capable of giving this statement a suitable response, still being rather too shaken by the words of his guardian to fully register another revelation so soon afterwards. Still, he couldn't let this pass unremarked; "Well... one of the planets that neighbors Olegaia, Galidoor, has been proven to have oceans and seas on it's surface. It's not unlikely that it could harbor life, civilized or otherwise. Nor is it implausible that other such worlds could exist. But to have it confirmed in such a way is... well, it's unexpected to say the least. I would dearly love to hear about them if you ever have the time to tell. Or perhaps even journey there..." his voice trailed off at this point, as if he was unable to truly comprehend the meaning of his own words. -

(Torald ain't here mate. By the way, did I lose any either for healing them twice? I'd assume so, but you didn't make any mention of that so I thought I'd make sure.) No," said Throlar with a slight smirk, "I guess you you wouldn't." His smile faded rapidly as soon as he caught sight of the fairy's injuries. "Oh, oh gods..." Throlar stopped staring at the horrific wounds on Euflear's back and refocused on their face. "I'm afraid we didn't actually stop to plan very much. Of course we could always walk out the front door, we did clear the way getting in after all. We also believe there may be a portal to Eubric on one of the upper floors if you'd like to go there instead. Speaking of Eubric, It's in a bit of a sorry state right now. That's sort of why we came here." Throlar held out a hand as it to help the fairy to their feet. "Do you need any help getting up?" he said. "Oh! where are my manners, my name is Throlar Wineghilm." -

"Err... ahh.. you don't need to do that, the Unicorn's Horn's properties should allow my healing to do everything a remedy could." "I... I really can't say... sorry, I'm a bit rattled right now. I'm probably going to need to sit down for a minute as soon as we have a moment." -

As Throlar's angelic guardian disappeared Throlar, and Throlar alone, heard a voice saying; "I am Ophaniel, the Grey Angel. Once I was a servant of Ennoc, but long ago, when Mercuton became host to demons and the paladins of Ennon waged war against them, the suffering caused was so great that I could not bear to idly watch from heaven. And so I chose to fall so that I could help the meek and destitute of the world directly instead." Throlar listend to the words of his companion, and as he did a look of reverential awe overcame his features. Then suddenly they collapsed again, as if some internal consideration had soured his feelings. The voice however continued; "Do not think of yourself as unworthy, I know of your past actions, and of your desire to redeem yourself for them. Do not worry, you have proven compassionate and willing to learn form past mistakes, and filled with a desire to help those in need and to protect the helpless. Redemption is not unobtainable for you. You have already achieved it." At these words Throlar was unable to help himself. He smiled more joyfully than anyone there had ever seen, seeming transformed by the words. The Fey One's pained gasp brought Throlar back to reality with a start. "Aaahhh!" he said frantically, "Err, Aaa, Gah!" he continued, desperately trying to nurture the fallen founder. "Is everything alright? Are you hurt? Are you being mind controlled and about to attack us? Please say no." -

Throlar nodded in acknowledgment. "I have no idea what to do, I could heal them, but I doubt that would do anything to free them. We might be able to ask my angel for assistance but I don't know how we'd go about doing that. So far they've only appeared in battle and haven't spoken much when they did." "I'd rather hold off on the holy fire until we've tried a few other methods first." Throlar sighed, "Well, seeing as I can't think of anything else I'll try healing to see if it works." With that Throlar knelt down beside the bound figure of the Fey One and began using the Unicorn's Horn to nurture them, muttering under his breath as he did; "Angel, whoever you are, whatever your name is, and whatever god you serve, if any, if you can help us now in any way, then please do so. I beg of you." -

(WBD; Throlar shouldn't be immune to ice if he doesn't have the Weathered Shield equipped.) The very sight of the room made Throlar feel nauseous, the stench alone was almost enough to make him retch. He managed to control himself, extorting himself inwardly to stay calm and consider the situation rationally. Regaining his self control he stood over the bound and helpless fey, pensively mulling over the scene in front of him. "Now," he said after a minute, "if I was an Archdemon and I had such a prisoner and I decided that, for whatever reason, they had to be kept alive then I'd have countermeasures in place in case someone came to rescue them. Firstly, I'd assume that if any enemy managed to get this far into my fortress and neither I nor my servants could reach them in time I would start with setting it up so that any attempt to free my captive would somehow result in their death. If I could I'd also set it up so that all these corpses around here would come to life and attack if anyone tried. Finally, if someone did manage to free my prisoner regardless, I would try to enact some form of mind control on them that would cause them to attack their rescuers. Of course, Rosier is not me, and it is unlikely they would have the same thought processes as me, but it's still something to keep in mind." "Are you alright? said Throlar to the monk, "if you need to step outside a moment to recover then feel free to do so. I can accompany you if you wish." "I wouldn't recommend trying to remove the vines until we know more about the situation, we should check for traps and countermeasures first." he said, using his Magnifying Glass to examine the room and the vines binding the Fey One. -

Throlar equipped the Rotting Rod and the Shield of Invisibility, downing a tonic in the process. "While I would like our group to split up and deal with both problems simultaneously it seems unlikely that half of us could defeat an Archdemon by themselves. Though I doubt that the figure Benji speaks of is Rosier. To be honest it seems to me that Rosier might be in the city already considering that their roots were already making their way through the sewers of Eubric. However our duty is to rescue the Fey One and the other fairies, letting them die when we can save them is unacceptable. Besides, they may have information on Rosier and this masked figure that we need." -

"You know, I think Pretzel is the only person here who can use that cowl." "Look mate, what exactly is your problem? Ever since we arrived you've been uptight and holier-than-thou towards us, and now you're behaving overly aggressively over something utterly trivial. You weren't this unpleasant last time I saw you, so what's going on?"
