Don't you just hate it when...
Brick Miner replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in Forum Information and Help
i guess, to protect yourself, you could wait to reply to newer users threads until the user has reached a respectful level of commitment to conversations at EB. more importantly, new users should also acknowledge that their topics may not receive adequate attention, because the simple fact that they are new. for example, i recognized this, and don't think i started any major mind-bending threads or published MOC until i had a good reputation within the community. and that didn't stop me from having fun, and getting good quality LEGO discussions out of my EB experience. replying to other user threads is still very rewarding X-D you definitely have some good ones Brickster ;-) - BrickMiner -
ya, i suppose so... that is probably right.but also without the tube, you need a stud on two opposite corners of the square bottom, in order to snap the figure to a baseplate. to me, the piece seems less versatile. anyone else have any theories ??? - BrickMiner

i agree, it's no legend, but that doesn't mean it's not better ;-) it has taken the lead !!! - BrickMiner

hmmm... this is very interesting to me Norro. i am very interested in who the designers are/were (and for what themes they designed for). as there are obvious themes that have great years... i wonder if the "best" designers rotated themes. and likewise, if some designers/designing teams just dropped.for example, i wonder if the designers of the wild west 96 line went on to develop other well designed themes... ninja, adventurers 98, etc. or if they were the same team that designed earlier pirates... also, very curious to me... were the developers of the wild west 96 line the same designers the 97 line. as the styles and quality of the two years are drastically different. -------------------------------------------------- is there somewhere this information is available ??? you seem to hint at its existence 8-

i think the fright knights were a great concept, but the sub-theme had a terrible execution. dark knights, witches, dragons,... all the components are there, and added up to some great (halloween-style) iconography. i think the two genres of fantasy and medieval work great together, i just haven't seen LEGO do it right... both fright knights and KK2 are the dino island (as brickster coined) of castle :-D actually, i haven't seen much fantasy/medieval genre stuff i like lately... didn't care for the LOTR trilogy, or HP movies (not quite medieval, but has the same roots, as far as wizardry). however, one fantasy/medieval combination i did like was the LEGO 3D movie i saw at LEGOLAND is summer. it was called spellcaster, and was possibly the coolest thing i experienced at the park !!! - BrickMiner

LEGO Islander MOCs - Got one? found one? Post it here
Brick Miner replied to KAHUKA's topic in Pirate MOCs
i agree... kahuka, your thread discription and titles need be more clear. because, as it is now, there doesn't seem to be any clear direction for your topics. and for a successful thread, there needs to be focus.you have good intention, promoting the islanders, that is ;-) but until i see some structure, im not going to participate. - BrickMiner -
but i thought AFOL didn't like the "jellys" ??? i guess we are rating the castle, not the set here.- BrickMiner

what a chilling concept B !!! very cool, had to quote it ;-) i think i might like to see the bridge built on a blue plate though. - BrickMiner

ah... face-offs... neat. i can't believe the dark fortress is winning !!! - BrickMiner

10176 has good figs... plus the two large swords and large helmet on the 8877 look too *wacko* and 10176 has a better overall shape. thought, i admit, i have neither ;-) this seems like a strange poll, what is the motive Brickster ??? trying to decide between the two to purchase ??? - BrickMiner

Hello Legocastlegirl !!! phes has made a great assesment of your MOC... it looks very accurate for a western commercial building !!! i've always been a fan of two story buldings for the WW, even though LEGO never gave us any in their official line. so, great job on all of that. i am wondering though, are there window panes on the second level windows ??? are they black, i mean, and we just can see them ??? i think a consistant color would really bring this MOC together ;-) i also like that you used lanterns as opposed to the open flame that the official LEGO WW sets had. that open flame coming straight out of the wood wall never really looked right to me *wacko* great to have another WW fan around (even if she is primarily a castle fan :-D ;-) ) thanks for sharing - BrickMiner

this is kinda an interesting concept that i have been dealing with internally lately, and thought it might make a good discussion... why do you like the themes that you do ??? this question is quite a bit different from "what themes do you like, and why ???" it has more to do with your inspirations and motivations, that influence the themes you like to build, rather than the actual themes themselves. i mean, for me, i love the Wild West LEGO theme... but when i look at my interests outside of LEGO, there is little interest in actual cowboy and indian history (i mean, a little, but not enough to devote a full-time hobby to, as i have done). but, i hate western movies, strange hu ??? i've always stuck to what i like as a kid, the history inspired themes... pirates, islanders, WW, adventurers, etc... however, my interests (outside of LEGO) as an adult have leaded more toward the town/city theme. as an adult, i have always been fascinated with modern city planning, development, and i love skyscraper architecture !!! -------------------------------------------------- so there must be some other factors (besides personal interests) that draw me toward the history themes of LEGO... some possible factors are: 1) nostalgic factor... what you liked as a kid. 2) well designed sets, and a well-conceptualized theme 3) outside media influences (movie, books, etc...) (SW fans obviously rely on this one ;-) ) other things that might determine the themes you like, would be your space available for the hobby. for example, trains obviously take up a large amount of space. -------------------------------------------------- for me, i have determined its well designed sets, and well conceptualized themes... i think the WW nailed this one ;-) -------------------------------------------------- so, open discussion on why you like the themes that you do !!! - BrickMiner

no, not dissing it... i love it... it just seems to have no purpose with no towers for it to build ;-) yes, this seems to be the only way to go (digitally) with skycraper design... im considering restaring a design in Ldraw (i started one about 5 months ago, but deleted the file, it sucked). i mean, to go at a skyscraper with just raw bricks would be expensive... (just like its really life counterparts) a project that size needs a blue print to keep costs down ;-) - Brick Miner

doesn't it seem wrong that they are displayed on the box art backgrounds, but are never realized as sets ??? and what is the construction crane actually building ??? does it have to be so tall if its just building gas stations :-D - BrickMiner

yes, the UCS don't seem to be targeted for kids, and have little playability factor (no minifigs !!!). that is why i could see dismissing those two reasons, and look for another more prominent conclusion.as for the price... hmmm... i was thinking LEGO could handle it like the BSB and then SES. like they could have one on the market at a time, then replace it with 1 new tower every 2-3 years... but that is probably only something that could happen in a market like we had 15 years ago. skyscrapers would bring me to town, and that is the bottom line ;-) i have always been a fan of the architectural movement, and i think it
-
this thread was inspired by Ales54 comment in his city evolution thread... i've recently become fascinated with the idea of building skyscrapers from LEGOs... i know a lot of people have done it, but i in the past, i've always stuck to what i liked as a kid, history inspired themes. believe it or not, i was actually re-inspired by the Wayne Manor MOC in the haunted houses thread. its funny, cause when i look at my other interests in life (outside of LEGO), and i don't see any pirates, islanders, cowboys or indians (there is a little ancient egyptian interest)... but what i do see is an interest in modern architecture and city planning/layout. strange hu ??? but i don't really care for transportation or police station or hospital architecture... where are the cool things... like towering high-rises ??? so i ask, why doesn't LEGO make skyscraper sets ??? is it because (as alex mentioned) that type of architecture doesn't encompass all the cultures that it is marketing to ???? is it because the sets would be too expensive ??? open discussion. - BrickMiner

i think we need more voters... i don't think there is enough feedback to determine anything !!! *wacko* well, i could say somthing cheesy like, "we are all winners here." but feeback is also a good thing ;-) how about making a notation on the front page ??? however, there is some really good news on the FP right now... so maybe its not a good time. - BrickMiner

BTW, Brickster... im curious. would a person using this method of determining an illegal technique, also see BaronSat's minifig to employ an illegal building technique ???in the case of a sticker torso, its not the concept of using a sticker that would make it unLEGO like... because LEGO used this technique in early sets. so it must be the fact that LEGO didn't make the actual sticker that would cause the torso to fall into illegalness. the strings or bands in the Halloween Amazon are most likely not made by LEGO either (correct me if im wrong BS ;-) those could be some LEGO-made technic band that im not familar with)... so does the Amazon get the same strike that the Drowned got ??? which would be a shame, cause id say those two qualities make those two entries the MOST creative ;-) but look who is talking here :-D -------------------------------------------------- :-D now i don't feel so bad :-P (not that i did anyway ;-) )- BrickMiner
-
very good summation. that was worth of mentioning, and im glad you did *y* as anyone who was thinking of voting for "The Drowned" should take into consideration where my creative efforts went.its funny, that you mention working with the system's limitations... as i am a firm believer of not using "illegal techniques" when connecting bricks. i could see how one could view decals in the same manor. but it's different for me... however, that sounds like a discussion for a whole other thread ;-) :-D 8-
-
this is a really cool contest you put together... looks like a lot of work went into it on your end, as well as everybody who entered. ---------------------------------------------------- as for my votes: MOST ORIGINAL: mine :-$ i think i was the only one to used a custom designed torso. plus, i made the only zombie :-D :-P ---------------------------------------------------- MOST SCARIEST: Sir Dillon's... that alligator head and normal hair combo freaks me out :'-( honerable mention goes to yoda for his use of lighting... it realy makes the minifig appear more scary than it would have been without *y* ---------------------------------------------------- OVERALL BEST HALLOWEEN FIG: again, SirDillon's... he actually fit a halloween ritual (trick or treat) into his story, which made him an obvious choice for "best halloween fig". great job everybody X-D BrickMiner

ya, that is about the only thing else i could think of... however, BL lists credits for inventorying sets and figs, but not for harvested images (at least that im aware of). so the contact information might be hard to come by.- BrickMiner
-
i go this message from BL today... very nice people over there...-------------------------------------------------- i never use the site, and thus, am not familar with its navagation... so i'll leave that one up to you IS X-D - BrickMiner

Halloween 06: Haunted House MOCs
Brick Miner replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in General LEGO Discussion
im not a big fan of victorian residential architecture (which is why i don't really care for most of these)... but i have to agree, that last house is great !!! if it were about twice as tall, it would make a great 1900's style skyscraper (which, oddly enough, i am a big fan of X-D ).however (i agree, 007) it doesn't look like there is any indication of a haunting going on there ;-) but our image of a haunted house is almost always a victorian mansion... so it most definitely has potential *y* - BrickMiner
