Custom LDD bricks and fixes
Equilibrium replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Ok, so I have finished another update. It was problematic and took a lot longer than expected due to inaccurate LDraw models. I was trying to fix dimensions based on official measures, photos and offsets for connection points I was getting. So if anyone owns any of the new parts (apart from 22253 and its tyres since I own this one) chceck if connection points/dimensions match with real bricks (by stacking bushes/connectors and seeing how much they stick out of the rim for example). @zweifuss Looks very nice, I'll dig out my UFO pieces and check how it compares :) But I have to say this - there's still room for improvement modeling-wise since your bricks requre some more work :P There are some gaps in geometry, overlaping faces, unsmoothed surfaces. I'll try to write short tutorial on how to get nice outlines in certain situations. Also, I have figured a trick on how to generate outlines on low angle surfaces (UFO dishes for example). -

@Stephan Maybe a missprint? I'm holding one in my hand and it's DBG :P -

What? No. Only LBG part is front assembly. Also your github lacks my train/rails category icon fix (MainGroupDividers/274.png). -

Interesting find. I haven't tried to do such thing. I'm not sure what causes it. I'll look into it tomorrow. Edit: Seems like it's collision issue. -

Sure. I'll do it with another small update that I'm currently working on. @zweifuss Very nice work :) Regarding outlines on quarter disc did you try to detach these faces so each pair would be individual? If so then we would need an option to manualy adjust their drawing angle. -

I had some free time so here's small and fast update. Outlines, collisions and connections as always: Download links: All my updates combined Update 3 ONLY -

@M2m @Calabar @jester @Stephan @zweifuss Guys guys, I know I happen to sound like an megablock but my intentions are not to bash anyone personaly, but to advice to don't rush things. It's very kind of you to consider my work a quality one, I don't hide the fact that I put a lot of craftsmanship into it. I have started this thread with intention to provide missing bricks so people wouldn't have to leave LDD for other programs when they saw they are just like made by LEGO. But I didn't have any intention to make everything by myself (hell, I couldn't make outlines myslef and I gave up for a year - among other reasons...) I didn't write this to discourage anyone. Sorry. From my point of view it is highly inefficient to create a brick with broken geometry becouse it will cause issues in a future and brick will have to be made from the beginning in most cases. Chamfered edges look nice but prevents Brick Studio from genereting outlines, geometry should be simple enough also made in a way Brick Studio "likes". I figured it out myself after some time and I'm not sure how to describe it; surface/area of multiple polygons that are connected together with each vertices/edges welded should generate nice outline on its edges... If I upload my 3D Max file/or exported to other format how I prepare my bricks (for example that big technic frame) would help? Once you understand how it's made it goes pretty fast, also I don't deny it will reguire some 3d modeling knowledge and that some surfaces are pain in the megablocks to adjust so Brick Studio won't output mess (monorail track switch...) - in such cases I'm just doing trail and error, sometimes it's enough to remove edge and connect different vertices leaving area the same. I didn't use any bricks made by others, If I did I'd post this earlier. I think it's better to fix/talk through some things earlier so we won't get into situation when there's 1000 bricks that have geometry/other errors and need corrections. I already made big mistake with parts naming. Asking end user to delete some files on his own is one of worst things could happen. BTW. You guys know you can download Brick Studio and use it? I had to google how to even compile it, but it works. Didn't try to make connections/collisions there since I use 3D Max for it. EDIT: Haha megablock is censored :) -

@Stephan I think it's time for you to rethink the rules on what kind of bricks are accepted into an update. I'm preparing another update with fixed pneumatic outlines and 3 new bricks (new 3x3 connector and 2 bigger technic frames, these are ready; proper connections, collisions, outlines) and since it happens these frames were just added I was curious to see how you guys made them... I'll skip lack of collisions/partial connections but now not only (again) these are modeled in a way Brick Studio will not generate outlines for them but also with errors/gaps in geometry - it's like this from every direction - (mine on left, yours on right)... : I'm giving an advice here - don't go for quantity at serious expense of quality. Now, if you would like to make that frame (for example) look like mine, you'd have to make it again from scratch becouse in order to get nice outlines from Brick Studio as an result one has to plan ahead during remodeling/converting part from LDraw library. -

I have updated my bricks, main changes; Fixed Blueprint crash, Better compatibility with LDraw export. Detailed changes are inside rar file. Due to numbering changes some files should be deleted from db folder: 324960 should be removed from Assemblies directory 9388 should be removed from Primitives and LOD0 directory 279701 should be removed from Primitives and LOD0 directory 279702 should be removed from Primitives and LOD0 directory 932902 should be removed from Primitives and LOD0 directory 2686.g1 and 2686.g2 should be removed from LOD0 directory 2684.g1 and 2684.g2 should be removed from LOD0 directory 2683.g1 should be removed from LOD0 directory Also for the same reason as above pneumatic cylinders and monorail bogey carts will be removed from existing LDD projects. You have to place them again. Sorry for the inconvenience. Download links: My old LINK now refers to merged update 1 + fix, New LINK for fixes ONLY. -
Unfortunately it didn't change anything, still slighty above 1000 s. @Corellian Corvette I'm not going to fix others work so it is one time favour (didn't test myself but should be working now) https://gofile.io/d/Dtoh0n Also I don't like the direction this is going; bricks without collisions or modeled in a way so outlines aren't calculated. I wouldn't allow for any of this.

@M2m I have found one more thing regarding strings: https://waymoot.org/home/python_string/ Also tried MKL fix https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/hpc/How-To-Use-MKL-with-AMD-Ryzen-and-Threadripper-CPU-s-Effectively-for-Python-Numpy-And-Other-Applications-1637/ but it didn't do anything. Well, I have decompiled blueprint, found function that was returning an error, got general idea what it does (with my friends help), wrote simple 3d max script to search for possible culprit and found out that Blueprint doesn't like when there's a face squashed between 2 other faces (3 vertices on 2 3d space coordinates) hence the "Zero length vector" error.

They are and maybe some people did, but there are also multiple small shocks (only one present in LDD) and multiple versions of pneumatics so to keep things consistent I did it this way. I assume people building with technic (and in extended mode) are aware of that. I'd need a list of parts that should be updated. When I get some free time I'll update it. Shouldn't this work both ways? I mean my LDD piston head is Ldraws piston + head, my LDD piston + gasket is Ldraws gasket. So it is just the piston rod being attached to gasket instead of head. Amount of parts is the same, numbers stay the same (for the most part). No worries
