Bootleg Super Heroes minifigs - worth it or not?
agoodfella77 replied to KingPixels's topic in Community
Life is always better with more options (to paraphrase my late and wise Grandfather). Bootlegs give you great options. For collectors, for customization, for accessories, etc. I'm curious -- was there a particular fig you are looking forward to for the Decool wave? I suppose the Winter Soldier could be an interesting variant... -

Thanks for the post. Which brand of varnish do you use? And did you use varnish on all of the figures in this picture? Great job!

Sounds good!

Bootleg Super Heroes minifigs - worth it or not?

Thanks for the shout out -- I'm glad you took the plunge, there is no going back now! I've always been curious about clear gloss / sealing -- I haven't done that with any of my figs (perhaps its because its a bit harder to source, but that's really a lazy excuse). How does it affect the final product? Any before or after pics? I was always kind of worried about it being too shiny, or messing up my underlying paint job, etc. I hate that this discussion may side-track / hi-jack this thread -- would be great to have a dedicated customization / bootleg thread as someone suggested... -

This may be a "dumb" question, but can't you use the dedicated Flickr app instead of going through a browser?

Bootleg Super Heroes minifigs - worth it or not?

For me, it's simple: my priority is minifigs above all else. In fact, I was a MARVEL fan long before my son re-introduced me to LEGO, thus my priority is to try and "assemble" the most complete MARVEL universe I can. This is also the reason I got involved in making MOCs (for the simple reason that there have been a number of characters not produced by anyone -- e.g. much of the Sinister Six for example) -- it is also the reason I decided to create (and release) my first official fig (Techno Girl). More to the point though, I should say that I support LEGO with plenty of my hard earned cash -- for example sets such as the Quinjet Chase or Hulkbuster or Iron Man v. Ultron -- it just makes sense to get the sets than getting figs a la carte. My son enjoys these sets immensely. I take the figs (but I do supplement those sets with bootleg purchases for him -- more on that later). To answer your question more directly: my purchase habit of LEGO is not affected by the existence of bootlegs nor my purchase habit of bootlegs -- not even an iota. The only extreme exception are the SDCC exclusive figs -- and even then it's not like I can go directly to LEGO and "purchase" them -- my (and our) options are simple -- you are at the mercy of scalpers and the second hand market (those of you who have seen my thread on the exclusives are well aware of my stance on this issue). This is when I will gladly hand over a few bucks to grab a Decool or SY version (or when a customizer such as Phoenix produces an even better variant than the original) which in turn helps to undercut the ridiculous secondary market pricing for SDCCs. As an aside, the latest Electro polybag is a perfect example. It was a TRU exclusive with a very limited US release which ended up effectively disappearing for a few months. The scalpers went right into action and this was trading at a preposterous $200 price level on eBay. And lo and behold, LEGO has recently decided to re-release them again via TRU for purchase for $4 bucks. Good on them. Heck, I would much rather buy the real thing over the bootlegs -- and when there is an option I do (almost 100% of the time). Again, the Electro example is an apt one because I bought the Decool set with the Electro polybag variant a few weeks ago -- it is sitting in my display case with my other Spidey villains. But when the real thing popped up for purchase via TRU recently, I snapped one up immediately -- it is en route to me as we speak, and when it arrives it will replace the Decool version (which I will give to my son) -- i.e. my bootleg purchase did not affect my decision to get the real thing. As for bootlegs generally, I love giving bunches of them to my son. It's a win/win because he can destroy them, lose them, swap them up -- I couldn't be bothered. And bootlegs do serve another purpose and that is when they come up with their own unique variants (such as Odin or the latest Magento or Iron Man marks) those are very well received indeed. I'm a collector. And more and more a fairly serious one. But I am not a collector of LEGO sets per se. I get them when they help me serve my overall goal, which is to expand my MARVEL universe. And as a by-product of this goal (and the fact that TLG retains the MARVEL license), over the years I have left a fairly hefty sum of money upon LEGO's doorstep indeed -- and the proof is in the pudding, aside from a few SDCC variants (and even for those I have a replacement variant) -- I have every single MARVEL figure that LEGO has released to date. -

Maria Hill finally comes in from the cold. 1) Great to get a new addition to the House Party Protocol: Disco 2) Man if that Mark 42 would have just been printed on a pearl gold fig it would have been awesome 3) Why do they keep printing Bones and Gemini? That must be the 3rd or 4th variant! 4) Instead it would have been great to get Tiger or Tank or Piston or Blue Steel... oh well, hopefully they will come Thanks for posting pics Wilson! -

Interesting. Does your friend have any information on what happened to Decool or whether DLP is actually Decool 2.0? Btw, here are some updated pics on the Dargo new Iron Man wave -- unfortunately (for me at least) these are indeed trans. I'm really disappointed with this trend to go trans -- it really serves no purpose. I hope they come out with a non-trans version: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Wholesale-DARGO-853-120Pcs-Building-Blocks-Super-Heroes-Avengers-Mini-figures-Heroes-Assemble-Iron-Man-Bricks/32324039783.html -
