Two classic scenes from Indiana Jones.
Clone OPatra replied to FilmmakerPaul's topic in LEGO Licensed
I think your minifigures and idea are spot on! Completely recognizable scenes from the movies! However, the backgrounds on the scenes don't really remind me of the movie. Tiles make the floor wooden in the first one, so I'd suggest using some non-tiled tan plates instead to make it look more sandy. Also, maybe it's just me, but I don't really remember a white building in the background either. Great job, though! -
Actually, there is a white cape, it comes on Mon Mothma in the Home One set. Your MOC looks great from what I can tell, but it's very, very hard to make out because of the pictures. Please try to take some better ones, and then it will look fabulous!

Thanks everyone for your kind comments on my review. As an extra "thank you," here's the answer to your question chris_austin: I think they actually work pretty well. My choice of yellow head could've been better I suppose, but all in all I think these minifigs could help make a normal, modern army. Enjoy!

LEGO Collectable Minifigures General Discussion
Clone OPatra replied to Nabii's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I do agree! I'd read about the bad quality in Magnet packs, but how could I resist minifigs that resemble the minifigs of Mace, Dooku, and Yoda for just $15? I think I might also have to get some of these, even if they're not perfect. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures General Discussion
Clone OPatra replied to Nabii's topic in Special LEGO Themes
You know, LEGO putting out so many new minifigures and accessories seems great, but somehow I fear that it might be another Chinese crappy-parts ruse like the magnet packs. I know I am being pessimistic, but just like getting real Yoda, Mace, and Dooku minifigs in a single pack seemed too good to be true, I feel like getting a large number of normal-quality new special parts figures is too good to be true. Only time will tell of course, but I'm worried that this will turn out to be another case of indent-arm, different plastic color minifigs. -
Review: 4762 Rescue from the Merpeople
Clone OPatra replied to Clone OPatra's topic in LEGO Licensed
Thanks! I don't think there's ever a problem with bumping reviews, since reviews are there for members to discuss their opinions of sets, and their opinions always exist. If somebody missed a review when it was posted, or they're a newer member, there's no problem with them adding their opinion (whatever it may be) to an older review. -
I quite agree. I think LEGO must have seen how well the Star Wars battlepacks do, and decided to extend that. The only problem is, LEGO seems reluctant to make sets without main characters in most licensed themes. Indy has appeared in every Indy set, Batman in every Batman set, Spiderman in every Spiderman set, etc. I fear that LEGO will follow the same path with Prince of Persia, putting Prince Dastan in nearly every set. Though they were unwilling to make a battlepack of Russians or Nazis or something like that for IJ, I am really quite happy that LEGO has decided to branch out in the Toy Story theme. While the big figs are made of crappy parts, LEGO is still catering to AFOLs by making an army battlepack, Western Town, upcoming Western-style train. I'm sure these sets will appeal to kids too, but it seems to me that LEGO knew adults would want lots of green accessories, and so they decided to make them.

Looks like some nice-for-kids, easy to play games. If only the fantastic minifigures on the boxarts came with the games!

Hello, just bumping this up to announce that I've updated it with all new pictures, as well as new text and some new sections. Why, it's almost like a new review. Enjoy!

It was reported that 2010 Toy Story and Star Wars sets were coming out at TRUs across the US, so I headed over to mine, and sure enough, the rumors were true! After finding out from other reviews that the big Woody and similar figures were Chinese pieces of crap, all I was left wanting from the line was… Set Title: Army Men on Patrol Set #: 7595 Theme: Toy Story Pieces: 90 Minifigures: 4 Year of Release: 2010 (late 2009) Price at Release: $12.99 at TRU, $9.99? from LEGO Buy it? Inventory? Bricklink flickr INTRODUCTION First, a word about the pictures in this review. I have a good camera, but its color perception is not always perfect. I monkeyed with photoediting to try and recreate the green-ness of this set, but there was not always a perfect solution. So, remember this: this set is very, very vibrantly green. Not all the parts on the jeep are the exact same shade of green, but the minifigures are, for the most part. To get the best understanding of how very green this set is, you may need to buy it yourself. Because this set is so green, it certainly stands out on a TRU shelf. The box does report that some components are made in China (like so many sets these days), and it wasn't too hard to tell which pieces were not usual LEGO quality. To find that out, you'll have to read on… BOX A new set, so I've got box pictures! Remember from two seconds ago when I said this box stands out on a shelf? Well, here it is, a brightly colored, not muddled design that nicely shows off the set in its on-the-floor-since-it's-a-toy setting. Interesting to note that the piece count had to be moved from under the title in order to fit the very creepy looking Woody design. Don't stare into those eyes too long! One side of the box continues the art from the front with a rendering of the army men bucket. You have to wonder why the set is called "army men," if the bucket says "soldiers." Maybe army men just seems less intimidating, and more macho. The back shows off something reminiscent to the movie scene, where the soldier is injured by Andy's mom and has to be helped to safety. Of course, I don't seem to remember a jeep in the movie, but hey, they couldn't include a giant bouncing ball! Sorry box-flatteners, this one you've got to punch open. The top of the box shows what it reports to be an "actual size" picture. However, since the minifigure is not shown straight from the front as they usually are in this section, you can't really tell if the figure is actual size. This is the first time I've ever seen an "actual size" picture that you can't actually compare with the figure. Lastly, another side of the box shows the same picture as the front, with the set title in other languages and a snazzy "join the 'get a really thin magazine' club" logo. INSTRUCTIONS Front. Not mangled, and it has the same very creepy Woody as the box. Back. Man, I want to slap the screaming kid. Not because he's a kid, but because he's screaming. No hating on kids here. Random Page. Luckily, I could distinguish all three colors. The pages have that nice cloudy design that is all over the TS sets. The (green) parts list. And an ad for the other TS January sets. PARTS Here are all the parts laid out, minus all parts that have to do with minifigures. I don't believe there's ever been a set with so much of a primary color, and it's great. Some of these pieces, like the wheels, have never been released in green before, but apart from that there are no 'special' pieces. Too bad not all the green bricks are exactly the same shade of green, though the differences are only very slight. The sole extra pieces is a trans-green little round. MINIFIGURES Even if you've got a green brick fetish, admit it, it's really the figs (and accessories) that drew you to this set. It's quite the stir of the LEGO community that LEGO has finally made army helmets. But I don't hold any hopes for army sets. Just because there's a TS western set doesn't mean that Western is coming back. Still, you can stock up on the helmets here, and get some darn nice looking camo figs along with them. No back printing for these fellas, but that's ok. They've got army helmets and green heads! Here's a better look at the face and torso. I don't think the toy soldiers ever looked happy in the movie, but hey, it's LEGO. I'm not sure why they decided to make the undershirt and belt a lighter shade of green, but it's not bad. Overall, beautiful minifigures, and I foresee some interesting MOCs with the possibility of green faces. ACCESSORIES Almost as big a draw as the minifigures are the impressive accessories. None of these pieces have ever been made in green before, and the metal detector piece isn't very common nowadays (it appeared in a bunch of Mars Mission sets back in 2008). However, there are a few things wrong with accessories. First, I don't remember the metal detector being bendable, and now it is very bendable. The rifles are also slightly bendy, though not li the metal detector, and even the Indiana Jones rifles are not bendy. If you look closely at the walkie-talkie handles, you can see that that they are slightly messed up in places because the handle rubs apart as soon as a you put it in a figure's hand. You could say that LEGO was trying to be authentic to the movie figures by making everything bendy, but I think it's more reasonably a case of Chinese parts. You also get four stands, sure to be useful for displaying minifigures with LEGO-made pieces. These have a nice shape, and can be put down on studs, an extra plus. Now for all the draws together in one pic: the minifigures loaded up with the accessories (minus the stretcher). Wonderfully green! BUILD The jeep is a straight-forward vehicle, but here's the build anyway. Note the use of light bley tiles inside, those will become a design issue on the completed set, since the ruin the "completely green" feel of the vehicle. COMPLETED JEEP There's no way for this jeep to be movie accurate, since there's no jeep in the movie to base it on. Still, I can assess if it looks good, or not. First a 3/4 view. It looks good from this angle; small and cute, and plenty army-ish with its detailing and color scheme. Front. Now we get right into what's not so good. The body of the jeep look fine, but the chassis is too big and the wheels should not not jut out to six-wide. Maybe the jeep is designed with jutting-out wheels to look cartoony and extra toy-ish, but to me it just looks bad. This is one set that I really want to MOD to make the wheels fit with the four-wide body. Back. Again, nice details like green taillights and the extra wheel with tire, but it runs into the same problem of a huge chassis and jutting wheels. Side. This doesn't look so bad since you can't tell the wheels are jutting, but, as Svelte would say, you can tell it's quite a 'colorful' truck. Doesn't look quite as bad in real life, though. Above. Doesn't look too bad from this tilted angle, but from straight above the jutting would be visible again. Here's one more problem. It is visible with the wheels and chassis on too, but I took them off to demonstrate how the gray tiles break the continuity of the green, for no reason. The black on the truck blends fine, but there's no reason for this gray to be here. Besides, there are even some green 2x2 tiles in the set! Why LEGO, why? WHOLE SET + FUN Here they are, our intrepid green army men idling about by there truck, ready for whenever the commander (Woody) gives a new order. Brilliantly green, I must say. Now they're off on a mission, scouting out new presents, seeing what's up in Andy's home… Oh no! Man down by giant motherly foot! Quick, Medic, hurry to the scene with your empty briefcase and backpack full of imaginary medical tools! CONCLUSION This set certainly reflects a modern trend (in America, anyway) of "going green." Green this, green that… and now, green LEGO! What you probably wanted from this set was awesome minifigures and accessories in cool colors. Well, you got them, though the bendiness of certain accessories is just a tad of a bummer. The jeep wasn't even in the movie, but it's not so well designed. Yes, it's cute, and looks fine from most angles, but the front and back views look bad. I know, it's toyish, but I was disappointed with it. The few varying shades of green are also a bit disappointed. I'm not sorry about my purchase at all, but there are those certain "let-down" aspects that I can't overlook. RATINGS Parts: 6.5/10 - nice to get stuff in green, but color continuity is not so great and certain accessories are bendy. Design: 5.5/10 - those wheels really kill it, along with the random light bley tiles. I would have liked some classic town wheels, those would have worked well. Minifigures: 10/10 - no complaints here. Simply green and beautiful. Playability: 9.5/10 - no enemies, but then, there were no enemies for the soldiers in the movie either. Even without flick-fires (sarcasm), I think there's plenty to do with a jeep and four green army guys. Price: 10/10 - I don't know what the real price is, but for four minifigures and 90 parts, $10 or $13 is fine by me. Overall: 8.3/10 - that's a low "B" where I come from, and that sounds right to me. While I still encourage everyone to get this set because the minifigures are awesome and it comes with green accessories, don't expect to be %100 pleased with it. And now, the Green Army Men are off to hunt down all licensed themes and spread the message: Disney is in Town!

Thanks very much for the link. It seems LEGO messes up catalogs worldwide, seeing as it says the Landspeeder contains Anakin Skywalker, and the farm layout pic has a minifigure that dates back to the '90s. Still, very nice!

Why complain when LEGO actually makes a nice-looking train, even if it isn't "accurate?" Are you also quite upset that the Western Town set has depth and isn't a piece of cardboard, Legoliner Pilot? Because personally, I don't want a cardboard LEGO set nor a train that I could crush with my finger if it was the "accurate" size next to the minifigures. About these new pictures, I like the look of the train (although its probably too expensive to be worth buying for me), but don't care much for the other two. The truck doesn't come with any awesome minifigures, and the factory whatever is just kind of a conveyer belt with machinery type stuff, not my cup of tea.

I think he may be saying that he hopes in the finalized version it will come with an ARF trooper. (Though I highly doubt it)

Thanks very much for the link! The amount of new figures is cool, though I think that blue box design is a little odd at this stage. Although I know it will change, I kind of wish the Wampa's facial expression would stay as it is now. It looks so cute and huggable, kind of like a white Domo, and I hope it doesn't end up looking too ugly and fierce. And you know, now that LEGO has gotten into these bigger SW creatures (Taun Taun, Wampa), a Rancor can't be far behind, can it? If that really is Zev again, oh well, I gues LEGO is just making up for putting Dak in three sets while never putting Zev in any. At least Zev has a cool face, unlike Dak's smiley pacifism. Like some others, I'm also glad that Plo Koon's fighter comes by itself without any extras. I quite like the collection of Starfighters, it would make a good hangar scene, but I couldn't bring myself to buy the Ahsoka fighter set, since all I really wanted was the Starfighter and Droid. Does anybody else notice the lightsaber clipped onto the fighter's right side? I guess that's better than where LEGO said to put it on Ahsoka's fighter, as I've seen in the reviews. The remodels look good, except GG's starfighter, which in this preliminary state looks less sleek than the first version. I am sure Palpatines shuttle will change before the final version, something just looks off about it to me right now. I don't think the Pilot's helmet is closed, the face just is oddly discolored. I'm sad that LEGO didn't take this opportunity to give us some more Shock Troopers (my favorite coloring of Clones). Maybe we will someday see a Senate Duel playset with Palpy, Yoda, and some Shockies. One thing that makes the Clone Wars sets different from LEGO's other licenses is that usually LEGO releases sets for new movies before the movies come out, but the CW sets reflect episodes months and months after they air. Maybe that is so the kids will already know the episodes and so recognize the sets (although Palpy has yet to appear on a Venator in an office), but I just find it a bit off for LEGO to put out a set with a villian (GG) and jedi that the villain kills. While I of course want the Mon-Cal head, it still seems a bit odd to me.

Excellent. I especially like how you have just the front tip of the Imperial Shuttle; it looks fantastic, and the ramp comes down in just the right way. I do quite like the pun as well. Best of luck!

Non-Pirate Mini-Figures Useful for Pirate MOCing?

REVIEW: 4796 Ogel Mutant Squid
Clone OPatra replied to Matn's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Another excellent review Matn! Your pictures are spot on, as always (and you have the same camera as me, I think: Canon SX110 IS). I never liked the old Alpha team much, though I got several of the sets. Of the underwater line, I think the only good sets were the bad guy ones, since they at least had nice trans-red cockpits and some other good pieces. Those yellow good guy subs though, blech… to me anyway. I remember picking up the Drone's claw sub, or whatever it was called, for quite a discount at a KB toys. The set itself was pretty lame, but the pieces and Minifigures were great. You should consider joining the Reviewers' Academy. I know you'd do great, and your pictures wouldn't need any work at all. But it's up to you. Great job, and I hope to see more reviews from you! -
I think preliminaries now makes perfect sense. The movie comes out in June, and I believe this sets were scheduled to come out in a May release, a few weeks before the movie. Similarly to how the Indiana Jones KOTCS sets came out in late April, a few weeks before the movie was released in May, or how the SW Ep1 sets came out in spring of '99, a few weeks before Ep1 came out in May. It's a pattern!

Looking at these new pics, I have to say I don't like Manta Man's torso even more. It looks to me like a human's jacket that's been left underwater for a really long time, which just doesn't make sense to be on mythical creatures, and doesn't even looks so good, to me anyway. Is Manta Man supposed to be a human that was drowned for a long time and now has turned into part Mantaray? If not, him having a jacket doesn't fit.
-
Here is also a link to it's TRU product page, where the price shows as $59.99 USD. However, TRU does sometimes push their price up after just a few days, and it's "out of stock" anyway. This could be a good sign for SW out in the US before Christmas, but let's take that discussion to the Availability thread and concentrate on pics here.

Here is a new very high-res ARC pic, reported on FBTB, with no watermark either. Enjoy, I'm pretty sure we've not seen it here before. (pic is link to the very high-res page on Flickr.) I'm not surprised that Kit does have the proper sand green hands, but I am a bit surprised that both Clones have the same torso, unlike in a picture where Jag had a new torso. Could this also not be the completely finalized version, or is the box just screwed up and the minifigure will have a different torso (it's happened before with boxart problems)? Only time will tell, I suppose.

Lego Toy Story set out in US Reviews of 7595 and 7590

Lego Toy Story set out in US Reviews of 7595 and 7590
Clone OPatra replied to Pugsly's topic in LEGO Licensed
Sorry for so many questions, but you are quite the center of attention for having the new sets. Did any of the pieces in the army man set come in separate bags of the same type that Buzz's head and other parts came in in the other set? And if so, which? Thanks very much. -
Legoliner Pilot, I don't understand why you are coming back to say the exact same thing as what you said, and many people (including me) responded to, back on page 28. You asked the exact same thing about "Give me one good use of the heads outside the theme…" and it was answered well. I read one time on this site, or Brothers Brick, or somewhere, that there will always be someone who finds a unique use for any piece, no matter what it is, even if you or I can't think of it right now. I suppose you're the kind of person that likes to MOC, since you seem to be hung up on using the pieces for other themes. So sure, in your case of a MOCer the sets with big heads aren't so great (although I can still see the heads being used in some funny vignettes, or toy shop mocs, or plenty of other comical uses). But for other people, they care about buying and displaying the sets, or creating Toy Story themed MOCs (which I know you would never dare do after your clear hate for all things Disney), so these heads are great. I don't buy sets so that I can immediately take apart the mfs and build my own, I like to keep the mfs and sets together. So I have absolutely no problem with cartoony and finely accurate big head mold that perfectly fit the line. And the long legs, well, that's just the same as the short legs, except they're longer, not shorter. I hope sometime you could show us a MOC incorporating Squidward's newest large head (with a nose, I might add) and a Plo Koon head or Mr. Krabs head or two, since those must be so easy and obvious to use in MOCs.

Well, black is in, so I'd say it's safe to assume that there will be nothing under there but black. About pupiled eyes, it's not the first time. The Imperial Inspection had Imperial Officers with eyebrows and pupiled eyes, so I'm not surprised to see them coming back to generic Rebels. Though I like the smilies for generic troops, they are a bit over-placid, so I can see why LEGO has decided to give even generic Hoth Rebels faces. Since the Endor Bunker had styled, pupiled faces on its generic Rebels, it's no surprise that Hoth Rebels now have the same.
