It would be an interesting concept, it would promote the defensive nature in high SP classes as they are literally defending the squishies from taking more damage If they hold the front line.

As Heckz reaches to put the gold into his satchel he notes a slip of paper resting in his bag. It simply reads:

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion

All else held equal, it wouldn't be overpowered, but it wouldn't be able to compete against other ranged classes as far as damage output. Honestly, throwing weapons tend to be more for style than effectiveness in this game, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Honestly, the only real advantage throwing weapons have is that they tend to have more special abilities than your average ranged weapon, but this is controlled by QM drops and not really inherent to the weapon class itself. -

I actually like the dropping of lucky from the shield roll, because it allows for items like Rubber Gloves to be useful. Plus if we're making comparison, assassin rolls aren't affected by lucky either. -
Skrall tramps into the hall exhausted. The ogres eyes don't even glance at the quest board as he makes his way upstairs. He notes some of his previous companions at their usual places but decides not to bother them. Now wasn't the time to bring up their failure, now was a time to recover. Skrall ordered a tankard of ale and a bowl of stew before making his way to a table and digging into the much welcome sustenance.

I see, perhaps it has to do with the infrequency of elemental damage. I'd agree with JimB though, no matter Sentinal or Guardian Angel both disappear if the PC is knocked out mid round.
-
Wait, since when does elemental damage bypass Sentinal?Edit: I see in the rules it's "Physical Damage" but has anyone actually ever run it this way? My understanding is that it always blocked all damage and that the physical vs. magical is only a recent distinction that wasn't taken into account when the rules were first written.

Depends on your playing style, if you're more concerned with the mechanic side of the game go with a potion or bedroll. If you're more into the roleplaying aspect, what would your character choose? Would he be a miser and hoard his gold? Would he be a survivalist and always have a potion at hand to keep him going? Would he be the sort who is ready for anything and always carries a bedroll? Would he be a paranoid nut case and always want a vial of venom handy for his enemies? Really the choice comes down to you, remember there really isn't a wrong choice, most "mistakes" are easily fixed after your first quest anyways.
-
Or just save it for later, never know when a bribe or other service might come in handy.
-
Bedrolls are handy in the absence of a cleric, potions can be useful if you need a sure heal in the middle of a battle. You can still take damage from a bad roll, so free hits aren't the only thing you'll need to worry about. As Pie said venom on a throwing weapon isn't as handy as on a melee weapon, but I wouldn't discount it completely.

I get it. Though I assume for race, he is just a human?
-
In roleplay terms, a halfling. In gaming terms someone who's out to take min/maxing and "winning" an RPG game to an extreme, I assume he means the former.

Actually I handled Crimson Crown, different from Red Assassins. Though I did include the first mention of them with the Cloak of the Red Assassin, Zepher has done most of the work though I think.

Depending on how much time you've got on your hands, yes.

I'd say it is better vice versa. Concerning second characters, 10 succesul quests punishes the player and influence the player to play the character a certain way to in order to obtain a reward that has no bearing on the actual character's in game decision, hence why 10 completed quests is better. On the flip side concerning veteran classes, 10 succesful quests incentivises a character because the reward is related and has an impact on the actual character, thus decisions are made based on in character knowledge more likely and less on player decision.
-
I like the idea. It definitely encourages hosting quests, but I'm with Kintober in that it should probably just be completed quests as opposed to successful quests. Character's are rewarded enough for good party behavior (i.e. expert classes, equipment, rewards, etc.) if we're pushing for Player and QM appreciation for dedication, then the qualifications should be independent of the actual characters' decisions. Honestly, I think we're a little too worried about potential problem players abusing the system, in the entire history of the game I believe I can count on one hand the number of players that have caused an issue.

If you want certain people on the quest, why not private invites?

This. I had something in the oven but when I heard there were two other quests just about to be released, I figured my time would be better spent on other projects (yes I have other responsibilities outside of Heroica ). However when I saw that the sign-ups were so long (understandably, knowing the behind the scenes reasons) I felt bad for all you new players, but I had already moved on. One thing I think as QM's we could work on is cutting back the sign-up time. The finale for Endgame's quest is over 1 month! As a general rule of thumb, I don't think any sign-ups should be open for more than 2 weeks (there are exceptions, finales for example where you want as many options as possible, even if I think 1 month might be a little excessive ) and if there's a good number of heroes in the hall for a quest than cut it back to 1 week. If your quest isn't ready, then don't post it, posting quests builds enthusiasm and if you don't deliver in time you're going to lose that. Now all of this is actually related to Hall activity. I'm one of the heroes who missed the first set of signups and spent a good week or two waiting, but the Hall was much more active and that enthusiasm stayed because it was maintained by all the interactions in the hall. Currently the hall is used for signing up for quests and a little chatting by some of the more experienced heroes, but the initial fervor from the new heroes has sort of died down. I think throwing a bunch of new heroes (i.e. from a lowered level requirement) would re-energize the hall and out of actual concern, I'm wondering what the downside to such a change would be if any?

Hey that's 16 months with a medal of glory and a trip to the fields already in the bag, it'd be 3x that without it. Medal's have almost become a necessity if you want to advance in my opinion. -

I hear what you're saying, Skrall's still got 20 more battles to go which is about 4 more quests which puts him at another 16 months or so. Hence why I'm more open to new ways of sparking some life and interest into things. -

It's not a requirement that you get a sidekick character, just an option if you would like one and again not everyone would get one due to the requirements. It's simply another option to allow customization just as equipment, advanced classes, and potentially secondary character are. Also it should be note that "playing with yourself" isn't against the rules (nor should it be in my book) but it is rather lack-luster to read, still we have quite a few examples of players pulling it off well and an almost absence of players who haven't. I'm not necessarily arguing that this must be something that we implement, I'm just trying to look at it from a rational point of view and counter "perceived" potential problems. If it's merely matters of opinion then, then those who disagree simply wouldn't have to implement it. -

On this whole debate, I'd think it might be a little fun to have a partisan, I think servant/familiar is a bit more fitting than side-kick though. As MDM has explained if the Partisan's effect are triggered on the basic battle roll than it is no more complicated than a fancy role-playing artifact. In a way it would be cool if Boomingham always had Servus as his lackey, or Skrall always had Poletad as a companion (what I had originally envisioned before he became his own character), granted these examples aren't exactly related to any of the Houses but the concept is the same. As MDM also pointed out, it takes quite a bit to get Exceptional reputation with a house so it isn't like we would be seeing a flood of the Partisans any time soon. The way I see it, the Partisan isn't meant to function as a second character, but as an extension of the first character. Essentially it is a Barty, a McCaffery, or a Finnegan just with a mechanical advantage. -
Depends upon your perspective.

I'm in the same boat as Pie, shoot me some details and I'd be glad to consider it.
