Heroica RPG- Quest #96: Tying up Loose Ends
Waterbrick Down replied to Scubacarrot's topic in The Heroica Archive
"Haven't seen her, but there's another door up here. Haven't seen any keys either and this door's too small for me to get my full weight behind, though I'd guess an explosive might do the trick. I could try the other door, I'm guessin' that's where they're holdin' her. Any exposed hinges on yer side that ya could try jimmyin' loose?" Skrall examines the door for exposed hinges. -

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Waterbrick Down replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
Tanks in Heroica only encapsulate the durability aspect of the role except on Shield rolls, it'd be neat to see a class that helps actually defend party members nearly all the time. Back to the drawing board. No classes were ever approved, but yes, Swashbuckler, Illusionist, Artificer, and Slayer. -
Much better. As far as "trying to injure him" I think we all know what you're attempting when you said Throlar flung the mace and chain at his head.

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Waterbrick Down replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
Ah yes, there are definitely not enough Winged Warriors. I love the class, but it doesn't seem to come up very often. The class would differ in that the player can actually choose to focus/aim/gather-power as opposed to having it be dependent on a die roll. Alters the strategy a bit and makes failure dependent on one roll as opposed to too, but I can see there being enough similarity to warrant no further thought. As for the marking idea, bare-bones class: Vanguard Additional Health: +12 Weapons: Hammers, Maces, Spears, Halberds, Shields Job Traits: Intimidation - (See Black Knight) Calculating Mind - (See Regulator) Marking - Vanguards can choose to mark an enemy as their action, but must remain in the front row while enemies are marked. Battle Style: Challenging - Vanguards keep enemies focused on them and away from their fellow party members 1. SHIELD: Come At Me - ?? 2. CRITICAL HIT: The Vanguard attacks the target with strength equal to their weapon power times two added to their level. 3. HIT: The Vanguard attacks the target with strength equal to their weapon power added to their level. 4. MISS: The Vanguard's attack misses. 5. DEFLECTED DAMAGE: The Vanguard is struck by their opponent's attack. The power of the Vanguard's Shield decreases the strength of the attack and has a 1/6 chance of blocking the attack completely. 6. SPECIAL DAMAGE: The Vanguard is struck by their opponent's special skill. Marks: Marks activate when the marked enemy does damage that doesn't include the Vanguard. One mark per enemy and only one of each mark may be used in a battle. Sacrificial Mark: The Vanguard steps in the way of the attack and takes the damage intended for the ally. Concussive Mark: The Vanguard slams his shield into the enemy stunning it for the next turn. Entangling Mark: The Vanguard trips up the enemy slowing them for the remainder of the battle. Retaliatory Mark: The Vanguard does damage to the enemy equal to his level. Shielding Mark: The Vanguard deflects part of the blow intended for the ally adding his SP to his ally. -
You're still dictating the result, i.e. killing or maiming. We know you want the best result possible from your action, but leave it up to the QM to decide and just say that Throlar "attempts" to wrap the ball and chain around the enemy's head. Then you'll be golden.
-
If you read his post, you'll see that it is a conditional action, i.e. "if it hit". I'll concede it's not a very good conditional action as it attempts to provide a result of his conditional action "would wrap...killing him", but it is conditional and available to QM interpretation.

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Waterbrick Down replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
Any opinion on an expert class that could intentionally spend a turn to (focus/gather power/aim/etc...) and if they hit on their subsequent turn they'd do double damage? Also thoughts on a tank class that would utilize the "marking" concept, i.e. class marks an enemy, when said enemy does something, i.e. damages another party member, mark activates and enemy is penalized/damaged/some negative effect/etc. -
It depends on the QM, some are more accepting of impromptu actions than others.

I believe Jebediah's had a class proposal like that. All this talk of class design has reminded me of this topic, it's been buried so I'm not sure if some of our newer players are aware of it.

Skrall shrugs at Maxis, "Ya never know what person of ill repute could be waitin' to jump ya in a house of ill repute." Skrall continued to wait. -
When it comes to actual party roles your standards are: Tank: Prevents the party from taking damage (Knight, Warden, Paladin, Guardian Knight, Skirmisher, Paragon) Striker Single-Target: High damage output against single target (Ranger, Rogue, Hunter, Berserker, Black Knight, Evoker, Shaman, Beast Warrior, Chi Monk, Dragoon, Infiltrator, Necromancer, Regulator, Winged Warrior, Artisan, Sylvan Ranger, Rogue Thief, Paragon,) Striker Multi-Target: High damage output against multiple targets (Barbarian, Raider, Assassin, Cannoneer, Marauder, Barbarian Chieftain, Paragon) Controller: Debuffs enemies and handles groups of enemies well (Mage, Sorcerer, Mystic Knight, Witch, Battle Mage, Sage, Evoker, Witch, Necromancer, Harlot, Arch Mage, Prophet) Leader: Heals the party, provides buffs to allies (Cleric, Paladin, Druid, Sage, Shaman, Minstrel, Necromancer, Alchemist, High Cleric, Prophet) Heroica is a bit different due to the nature of its combat system when it comes to these roles as compared to other RPG's but the basics remain. If we're looking at additional classes, I'd suggest a tank or a leader class.

"Sure aren't accommodatin' to their larger clients." Skrall tries the door to the left. -
Scottish to be precise.

Shields make all the difference.
-
I've built Skrall to be a boss killer, mathmatically it's easier to get more power via multipliers vs. straight WP, hence why I invest in Gems, Multi-Favoring, Meads, and Fragile enducing effects. I'd agree Skrall isn't effective against large groups, but once a Hunter gets properly setup they are definately a force to be dealt with.
-
Skrall, I picture as an amalgamation of Krunch from the Looking For Group web-comic and Mr. Gibbs from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and as always voiced by Sean Connery.
-
Not sure what difference it would make. Classes that utilize ranged weapons tend to have less armor which helps balance them out. Giving heavily armored classes ranged weapons (aside from Warden) kind of negates the tradeoff.
-
Advanced Classes: Weapons list dependent on Base Class Expert Classes: Weapons list independent of Base Class Veteran Classes: Weapons list dependent on Base Class Master Classes: Weapons list dependent on Base Class
-
It's a unique item and there's a limitted number of them, but I don't think we've ever had a case of someone using one for a weapon that wasn't suitable to them. Not sure if a Dragoon with a ranged weapon wouldn't be a little OP.

"Wouldn't surprise me, if the rest of the crew had gotten themselves in some trouble." Skrall pushed the door to the right open. -
You've got the meaning with the shrapnel idea. The idea was to provide a scaled down version of the cannoneer class in weapon form. If there are less than 3 enemies each one only gets hit once.
