  1. I think Rufus just has lower standards for accuracy than we do. It is a LEGO set, after all. And I guess the shrunken troop section doesn't bother him so much. I don't like the way the legs look around the joints; the transition from the inverted dish to the tiles is too abrupt.
  2. In that video I can see the bottom of the Scimitar but nothing else new. kermit, that's this set. I distinctly remember the new Falcon having an oversized cockpit piece like 4504. On the other hand... this looks an awful lot like a Juggernaut tank...
  3. The A-wing's hull slopes upward as well as outward and is rounded at the sides, so I don't know how you're planning to make that work... General Magma, you're going to want to use 2x4 wing plates instead of 2x2x2 slope bricks for the slope toward the engine, since the angle is more accurate. This would also allow you include the engine innards which are visible in this shot.
  4. Nah. It's obvious that the fighters used in the Battle of Yavin weren't exactly in factory condition. It could be assumed that adjustments and modifications would have been made to the fighters in their long time of service, resulting in each model being unique. (This would also be the in-universe explanation for why there are differences in kit parts used for detailing on each of the Falcon models.) A closer look at each of the four models I mentioned reveals that they have major differences in detailing. For example, Red Leader has a horizontal gold stripe across its upper port engine, Red Three has a green blot on the port side of its nose, and only Red Two sports the red circles around the air intakes seen in the cockpit closeups. And of course there's the famous broken red nose stripe and blue "barbershop" markings along the laser cannon barrel characteristic of Red Five. And it's also quite obvious that Red Two is shorter and bulkier than the other three if you've watched the film through a couple times.
  5. So the other day, I stumbled across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxmA_RVJWvs&hd=1 I can tell from the first few seconds that this is definitely not the '98 Special Edition. However, I am aware that there is a "bastardized" version of the film in which some, but not all, of the extra scenes and changes from the Special Edition are present. Unfortunately, the irony is that though I like the X-wing I own only the Special Editions of the movies, so I have not seen the original "unaltered" Death Star trench run in years. Can someone with the '04 versions verify whether this actually is the original?
  6. Just so you know, all the models have slightly varying proportions, especially the Red Two model. Don't think you can get away with just changing the identification markings like LEGO tried to do.
  7. Bah, retcons! It annoys me to no end when people make references to Prequel-induced retcons while watching a film from the Original Trilogy. Take this, for example; over half the comments are jokes about the fact that Leia is actually Vader's daughter and about Threepio being on Tatooine for the second time, which at this point is WRONG.
  8. I knew that; I was referring to the fact that it was an Expanded Universe vehicle prior to its appearance in Sith, in the manner of the Octuptarra Tri-droid and other vehicles from the late Clone Wars. As for the latter... bad show LEGO, bad show...
  9. I don't know... the engines on the large Red Three aren't flush with the bottom surface of the wings like they are on the smaller models, which doesn't look as good for me. On the other hand, the details and weathering on the large model are amazing, much more so than any of the smaller models.
  10. Only pictures of the minifigures? Doesn't anyone care about what the sets look like? Sebulba and Watto don't even look like LEGO... What's up with Ki-Adi Mundi's face? It's creeping me out. On the other hand... is that the classic Scout Trooper torso I see? I must admit, there's no way you would be able to tell that Eeth Koth and Maul were the same species... they don't look alike at all.
  11. I thought it was an Indy 3 reference...
  12. Did you recognize my foul stench when you were brought on board? I'm wondering whether the wings aren't too thin; if you were to attach engines to that sliver, I think they would look rather fat. And by the way, the wingspan (with wings open) is roughly 86% of the length, so you may want to elongate it. If you're building SNOT wings, it has to be in a very large scale (at least the size of drakmin's X-wing, if not bigger) or else the wings will appear ridiculously fat. Still, you're using 2x2 round bricks for the wingtip laser cannon housings, so that should offset it a bit. You've devised a unique and fairly accurate solution for the flashback suppressors; very good. You're going to want to rework the area around the laser cannon; the rectangular bit on the end doesn't look all that great. Also, the cannon itself shouldn't touch the wing surface; there are actually small struts attaching them to the wing, as seen here. The barrels should definitely be much longer; they extend to around the proton torpedo launch tubes. Since you're using SNOT, you've managed to include the "holes" in the wings. However, they appear the wrong shape (they look like this), and at the very least they should be thinner than the main part of the wing. Perhaps some brackets would do. Not necessarily. Tan laser cannon cooling sleeves are unique to the Red Three X-wing (both the 1/24 miniature used in the Death Star trench run and the large four-footer from the Magic of Myth exhibition), and only on the upper pair of wings. On the Red 1, 2, and 5 models, they're all the same color as the fuselage base (white/grey). This is one area where LEGO goofed on 7191. All four of the models I mentioned have significant differences in detailing, so what General Magma will include on his model will change depending on which X-wing he bases his model off of. Because let's face it, a hybrid with details from all four would just look weird. (I based my own X-wing off the Red Five model, though I couldn't include the correct identification markings and tan stripes on the nose, among other things, due to part limitations. Someday I'll make a UCS...)
  13. Ha-ha, very funny... I have only a faint idea of what a Juggernaut tank looks like, so I don't see anything wrong. Of course, the proportions and size would be different depending on whether it's an A5 (small) or an A6 (large). On the other hand, I can see SNOT, greeblies, hinged bricks, and even some Technic on that Juggernaut. They can pimp an Expanded Universe vehicle but not an X-wing?
  14. *Here's one for the General Questions thread: why are ceroknight's comments on MOCs always so insubstantial? This isn't a flickr page. drakmin, two important things I feel I should mention: - The location of the laser cannons; the thickest portion should line up with the middle portion of the repulsor drive unit. It looks like if they were there, they would appear to be too far apart, indicating that you should consider making the whole thing taper in more, or at least adjust the wings so that the ends of the guns end up where they're supposed to be relative to the vertices on either side of the nose. - The radiator assembly is missing a key component: the spool for the tow cable. You can see that there's a hollow with a little round thing interrupting the fins in the center here; that's where the cable can be seen detaching in Empire.
  15. Man, are those ugly... Yes, the faceplate does bear some resemblance to Optimus Prime. Even if it could transform, it wouldn't look too great as an X-wing; for one, those wingtip laser cannons are so stubby they make the ones on drakmin's look long. But that's not the point here, so enough.
  16. As others have already said, V2 is a substantial improvement over the original. The half-circle and guns in particular stand out to me - the click hinges do a much better job of capturing the shape of the ring than the bent flick-fire missiles did, and the guns are now more detailed and certainly more accurate (though maybe too big). I wouldn't worry too much about staying within minifigure scale - when the figure is visible from the outside, dimensions can get really arbitrary because minifigures themselves have odd proportions. As long as you have some sort of decently proportioned driver (e. g. Hasbro action figure) that can fit in the seat and look good (i. e. be in scale to the rest of the craft) it's fine by me. Something no one's mentioned yet - I think that the tiled block running down the center of your model should be reworked. There is a sloped area there on the "real" ISP which is not present, and it gives your model too much of a blocky feel. You may also want to set the gun platform back a bit - the bar that should be attached to the front of the platform is actually attached somewhere in the middle on your model, which also makes it look longer. All that free space in front looks rather awkward. In addition, I too would recommend rebuilding the platform in SNOT to capture the curves better. Notice that the guns aren't actually mounted on the platform itself, but are attached to thin rods which stem from the base of the bar with the red stripe. I would recommend bars attached to these. I'm not sure I would go with that piece for the turbine - it's just too elongated. Something similar to what you did on your previous rendition would be preferable. While the shields no longer look oversized, I can't help but think that they now look a bit small.
  17. I appreciate your friendly tone, especially since Trekkies and Jedi are old rivals. While I would agree with the application of military design philosophy, I can think of several counterexamples to military vessels being clean and pristine, at least in the Star Wars universe. You can see that the Imperial AT-AT is fairly well weathered: And a quick look at the Avenger shows that the Empire has no problems with exposed wiring. This makes sense, since the warships of the Galatic Empire are generally designed for the purposes of intimidation rather than military efficiency (why else would you build a laser the size of a small moon?). The space vessels of the Alliance are even less so. The EF76 Nebulon-B Escort Frigate Redemption certainly deviates from such design standards: As does the Tantive IV: It's space opera. I'm not sure it's supposed to conform to military standards. I've heard of/seen space opera vessels next to which the second Death Star would be dwarfed. What's funny is that both the J-type 327 Nubian and the N-1 were actually studio miniatures in at least one scene. Still, the Naboo ships are so far removed from anything else in Star Wars in terms of appearance that you could almost repudiate them. It is true that the sleeker ships of the Grand Army of the Republic follow the military design philosophy more closely, but they still have their share of weathering. The AT-TE, while generally cleaner than its four-legged successor, is still pretty grimy.
  18. Those orange highlights look fantastic, and I'm glad to hear that you intend to rework the power couplings (as that will also fix the issue of the misplaced struts in the canopy). Nice work having only part of the canopy angle upwards; it looks very nice. The canopy is also higher up in the rear, with smaller windows: very good! (Though I think they could be just a bit smaller.) A couple things I've noticed: I think that the angle of inclination of the nose may be a tad steep. Compare with this reference picture: You can also see here that the tapering of the laser cannons should be more compact. The cannons should be at their thinnest point just behind the power couplings, and the short segment appears to line up with the pair of struts on either side of the canopy. Something else; the cockpit hinge appears to line up with the vertex between the 'flat' and 'angled' edges of the wing, which is clearly not the case in your model. The length of the canopy looks about right to me;I would attribute the misalignment to the 'flat' edge being placed a bit too forward (since there obviously isn't much of it behind the repulsor drive units on your model). The braking flaps seem too thick for me, but I guess others will be fine with it since it's SNOT. I really think click hinge plates would have worked better there, though. As for the tips of the laser cannons, it looks like a couple of 2x2 round bricks could work there. I think there could be more fins in the rear as well. I count fifteen in this picture; there are only ten on your model. If you use wing plates, or at least thinner Technic pieces, I think you could cram a few more in there. Do you intend to go back and put in the little section of the wing that touches them? On the other hand, I think the angle at which the laser cannons point inward looks fine. What do you all think?
  19. Man, and here I was expecting fireballs flying. To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about Star Trek, its 40+-year history, or its 10+ movies, but I can say that Star Wars has at least thing on it: space vessels. Sure, the ships in Star Wars are completely independent of the laws of physics, but on the other hand, they're heavily weathered and have rough edges. On the other hand, every Enterprise I've seen in Trek looks chrome-plated and polished as if it was some rich guy's car. I mean, compare: Okay, I honestly don't know which Enterprise this is (B? C? J?) but that's beside the point. Look at the fluorescent lights, the thin curves, the exaggerated saucer and ridiculously thin pylons. This looks as if it were kept behind glass all day rather than a true spacefaring vessel. Now look at this: Look at the hard lines, the weathering, the exposed wiring, the panel lines. It may not obey any laws of physics we know of, but the model itself is real. It's tangible. When you look at the Falcon you get the feeling that it actually may have been halfway across the galaxy. Not to mention that those huge engines mean business. Warp Nine? Please. The Falcon makes .5 past lightspeed. Besides, Wars is space opera, while Trek is straight sci-fi. What's more, Trek is largely dependent on the fact that nearly every episode is entirely self-contained so that Kirk and his buddies could go on a million trips across the universe and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Wars is a three-act saga with an air of drama to it, on a scale more epic than that of Trek. It has a definite beginning and, despite what they've been trying to do with Legacy and the New Jedi Order, a definite end. So there you have my two cents.
  20. Very nice. Do you intend to add a layer of plates to the underside? There are some tricky angles in that area.
  21. Well if you look through my brickshelf folder you'll see what he means... Hmm... reminds me of this: For some reason, this strikes me as being very cute! That makes my version 1 look like a masterpiece Seconded. Not to mention excessive molds that jack up prices.
  22. What the - Ackbar was drinking on the job? No wonder he was so wishy-washy with Lando! Perhaps it's a reference to the Extra in the first video game? About the Zabrak tattoos - doesn't Sugi have them as well? I think the people who write these episodes are under the misconception that Zabraks have patterned skin... (bah, retcons!) Then again, there are only three relatively well-known Zabraks, all of who are tattooed (Maul, Eeth Koth, and Agen Kolar) so I'm not surprised. The Geonosian - remember everyone, these are still preliminary...
  23. Is that so? I don't recall Tarfful having gold fur anywhere on his body.
  24. Well, pretty much anything Star Wars is indepedent of our established laws of physics. I just think that we should try and refer to named things with a commonly used name for clarity. I mean, if somebody were to mention a "Jedi starfighter" the first thing I'd ask is, "Which one?" Heck, if eltsyr hadn't included the set number in his thread title I would have had no idea what he had meant by an "Obiwan Star-fighter" before clicking on the link. What's more, Bonaparte has already emphasized the importance of adhering to the conventions of the English language here (Eurobricks being an international forum and all) so when I see people misspell words or use improper grammar in their posts (you all know who you are) it disorients me a bit.
  25. Heh. Reminds me of this: "Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi. You're my only hope." *slap* "Threepio! Have you been watching p*** on this thing?"
