  1. So I've registered a "collaborative" MOC for my entry on the Historica table, and then a 2nd "individual" MOC for the Classic Castle build. Is this correct? Have other people registered? Any formatting we want to do with names and descriptions? Only one week to register MOCs. Also I have registered my two MOCs, but have not registered space since one will be on the Historica table, and the other will be part of the Classic Castle Build. Am I correct on this, as today is the last day to reserve space? Edit: Also, with the Lego discount for $100+ and $250+, anyone maybe interested in going in together to hit that $250 - 30% off mark?
  2. The problem is, we are already doing scaled representations for Historica with our builds. When I build 1 farm MOC, that does not mean I have one farm in my entire territory, it means: this is an example of what my farm looks like. Also, with the mini builds that have been going on, we are representing 50 or 100 buildings in a town, which would be populated by 100-200 people by today's standards, meaning 500-1000 minimum with the larger families and higher population density of the medieval era. Historica is based off of presenting a sample representation of what you have. Likewise, our armies should also be a sample representation. If we do a 1:1 for our troops, then you end up with territories having armies that don't scale up to our buildings. I don't think that our populations should be even approaching those of Medieval Europe, but I don't think they should be tiny either.
  3. Stunning! I can't wait to see the entire entry.
  4. This is a very good point. When I built my embassy I included a barracks room that could hold a whopping 4 troops. Luckily,I only had 12 residents, so if they each sleep in 8 hour shifts. A bit absurd, I know, but I think our castles kind of scale like the troops. Only the largest MOCs would be more than meager strongholds if they were translated to real life. Real castles are simply enormous, have barracks for 100s of soldiers and rooms for a similar number of servants and the like. Everything we build is at 1/100th scale and then 1/10th scale except for the occasional magnificent MOC.
  5. I don't expect a MOC figure to represent more than itself. I do think that some people might like to come up with a rough estimate of armies based on owned figs from the standpoint of "how much do these really represent." I don't think anyone is really looking to own 2000 figs just to say in their lore that their army has 2000 soldiers. People can arbitrarily say "My region can muster 100,000 troops, or a million. It is just nice to give a realistic goal to shoot for, so if I have 20 lion soldiers and 40 dragon soldiers and 20 forestmen, then maybe that means I can muster 200 lion soldiers, 400 dragon soldiers and 200 villagers/forestmen. Then I could say to myself "self, I should buy 20 more figs so then I can say I have an even 1000 man army." It's just a way of artificially calculating your army strength, and only some people will be interested in doing it. It is not meant to be a rule that must apply to all Historicans. IMO.
  6. Varis of the line of Dellaenus, Servant of the White Hart, Protector of the Sacred Grove, Lord of the Rustling Leaves Clan. Dressed for Battle.
  7. I should have my armored sigfig posted tonight.
  8. I would like to see each fig represent 10 similar units - be it infantry, cavalry or other. I would say there should be a min number to represent though (say 10 infantry for 100 footmen or 4 horsemen for 40 cavalry). My two cents.
  9. I LOVE GoT! I'm rereading the 3rd book again, and I have the first season, but I don't want to pay for HBO just for 1 show I have almost broken down a couple of times, but it's just too expensive. GAH!
  10. Very nice - I look forward to seeing whether your transaction is succesful I built like crazy on the 14th, thinking the 15th was the deadline. Nothing like a last minute scramble to get the MOC going I ended up rebuilding the scene, and I just finished another scene tonight. I had a very hard time coming up with a concept for this one, but it's sort of fallen in to place. I've thrown out my waterfall scene as I see that many folks are planning one. I'm already anticipating this to be my least favorite challenge entry, but I won't be ashamed of it at least. I agree with Z - this will be very helpful as I have to start my Brickworld build as soon as I finish Challenge 3. I look forward to hearing about the mini-challenges too.
  11. That's because you Drow see all the Susans and Sallys and Betty-Lous as weak! Everything is "weak this" or "weak that". That's cuz Drow, they just don't understand.
  12. That's true. I felt the same way about the rogue shadow which, although a sleek ship, just wasn't that pretty. It is definitely the original ship design at fault, not the lego translation.
  13. Yeah, so that makes me WAY off with my thoughts of an April 15th deadline. Nothing like last minute effort to really get your build going though
  14. I have to agree that the Endor Bunker and Home One are two "must haves" from recent years for OT sets. I also think that the Gunship and AT-TE are pretty amazing but I understand the price issue. I personally love the fighter tank, and I wish I would have picked up a few more myself. I considered piece-mealing these, but they were a pretty high price/dollar set.
  15. Those Sith troopers look incredible! I love that Lego is doing so much EU, but I can't say that I really like the look of some of the parts (ships, droids). Of course Jabba's palace is Awesome!
  16. My one concern would be the sturdiness of the lightsabers.
  17. I agree with both Sirens and Angeli, I think the prizes are incredible (I mean you can win a joust? Awesome! , and I can't WAIT to see these custom figs) and the Guild leaders/EB have been enormously generous with the purchasing of said prizes out of their own pockets. (not to mention the prizes that non-GLs have given out for contests those individuals sponsored.) And I think that a big incentive for a lot of builders in the guild IS the chance at winning prizes. I also agree with Angeli that a lot of us here can buy a $50, $100 or $200 set if we really want it, and when you consider the amount of time that is put in to some of these MOCs, as well as the Bricklink orders that some of us place (I spent over $150 on Challenge 2 alone ) it's not about the prizes for some of us. It is more about the "respect, admiration, recognition and fun while building, etc." exactly as Angeli said. In terms of contest constraints, I think that there can be arguments for and against but in the end we're still going to get great builds from members either way.
  18. I wonder if I'm the only one that was desperately building yesterday to make the challenge 3 deadline today April 28th. I was double checking the crystal color this morning in the Challenge 3 post when I saw the correct deadline.
  19. That MOC should qualify you for Prince of the Forest, but it often takes a while do have it updated on the first page as the guild leaders can't be on here every day (and Derfel has been on vacation), and often have more pressing issues to address (Challenge 3, GoH Survey, etc.) I can't think of a title build that Derfel didn't accept, so you shouldn't have to worry about that. I'm sure your title will be updated soon.
  20. Greeting Tifag, It is always a blessing when more Elves join the ranks of Avalonia. I am eager to hear from whence you hail. I look forward to seeing what your Elves have built in fair Avalonia.
  21. I think a big concern for size limitations is not whether or not you have enough pieces to build in a larger size, it's whether or not you really have the time to put that much effort in. When I built my Embassy, I knew I felt that I had to fill every inch of that MOC with detail if I wanted to be competitive. With a 32x32 at least I know there's only so much room the other builders can use too. My tower also took me about 1/3 to 1/2 the time my embassy did. I think that challenge 3 has worked out well because people are utilizing different scenes as well - which in my mind allows them to be more competitive with the giant builds that will be entered. If I'm going to enter a contest, I'm going to want to maintain a certain level of detail per stud, and that gets four times harder when you go from 32x32 (1024 studs) to 64x64 (4096 studs) which will require four times the effort. Just my 2 cents.
  22. Great Idea NiceMarmot, and well worded too! I hope you don't mind if I just pirate your whole quote. It is your quote, correct? I've added it to the top of the MOC Index and renamed it to save on stickies. Edits made - Thanks for the help NiceMarmot!
  23. Yes, Thanks for reserving Z. 64 x 64 will probably do it for me. I haven't decided what exactly I'm building. It will depend on whether we try to get a theme going (all Albion builds, etc.)
  24. Has anyone made a move toward reserving a table? I'd hate to not have a GoH table.
  25. Hello, I am Rogueang from Avalonia. I am a semi-active builder and poster (I was very active for a few months, but my outside life has taken over) Things I like about GoH: I think GoH is a great concept, and has been put together very well. The Guild leaders have put a ton of effort into this, and I think it is a great way to expand off the castle theme in a way that lets members showcase their talents and create their own realms with the world of Historica. I really like the variety of contests we have seen (defined mini-MOCs, Micros, politics, poetry/story-telling, random contests) and I think it really helps people branch out into semi-related areas where they may have non-MOCing talents. I like to see some of these more specialized contests offered to the entire guild, as I don't know that individual guilds may have enough interested members. The sheer volume of builds, as well as the stunning quality of builds has been staggering. I think that GoH more than justifies it's existence on the builds alone. There has been a lot of community interaction within GoH which I think is great. I was a lurker for 2 years until I saw GoH and suddenly became involved with EB. I have met some great people, and really enjoy the conversations that go one here. I think half the fun of GoH is becoming involved in the Guild threads. Things I dislike about GoH. I wouldn't say I have any dislikes but I would like to see the smaller contests continue, and I would probably be up for sponsoring one or two, if the Guild Leaders were OK with it. I would like to see more results from the big contests as well. I really liked the way the 1st contest worked, with 5 builds being selected from each guild, and then the top 5 being released a little later. There was some build up to the finale, instead of just 1 revelation of 1 winner from the guild. I think that the driving force behind GoH is the members, not the Guild Leaders. I would say that my main inspiration for posting on guild threads and posting MOCs is responses and feedback from other members. It is nice to see a Guild Leader post, but I realize that they have a ton to do and my duties with the MOC Index (even though they are much smaller than the guild leaders' duties) have kept me from responding to member MOCs like I should. I would love to see an in character forum, as suggested by Eryn. I think this would be a great place to interact, and would be a great way to keep members more active between contests. I wouldn't mind seeing rotating guilds, for example Guilds of Historica the 1st year, Guilds of Galactica the 2nd year, Guilds of the Carribean the 3rd year, etc. I think that multiple guilds would take away from both guilds, as a lot of the same members that participate in GoH would participate in other guilds as well. All in all, I think the Guild leaders have done a fantastic job with this, and the members have really made GoH a great place to build and enjoy the company of other builders. Thanks All!
