SR-71 Blackbird
colinrichardson replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow, killed it. Though, would it be too much to ask for an adjustable intake spike: http://www.wvi.com/~sr71webmaster/j-58~1.htm? j/k ...but not completely joking. -
I'd always presumed that this was a bad idea. I recently received a bulk lot off of eBay which contained a handful of spray painted parts- it confirmed, for me, that it is a bad idea.

Caterham Seven
colinrichardson replied to Sheepo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yet another amazing MOC from Sheepo! Great choice of car - it's very distinct from the more typical modern sportscar form. -
This looks great! I'd really like to see it in plastic- are you planning on building it?

Maybe a bit tangential, but Jalopnik has a piece today (a bit polemical) about the "supercar" designation (for actual full scale cars); it's an interesting read and parallels this discussion a bit. For me, it's hard to know exactly where to draw a precise line- I think that for supercar's in both cases, you ought to be able to say that the designer/builder "went all-out" and didn't half-megablocks anything for the sake of comfort, cost or ease.

I think it really depends on what interests you. I think the 8110 is a very good in terms of fun per cost: It's a really interesting build with some ingenious building techniques and it's also very fun to use the crane, etc afterwards. I think the 42009 looks to be as fun to use and none of us really know what the building experience will be like at this point. If you're ambivalent on which one you'd rather have (you're not a Unimog fan or particularly interested in construction equipment), I'd get the Unimog: it will be discontinued soon and probably won't be getting cheaper on the second-hand market. The 42009 will probably be available for at least 2 more years, so if you really want it then, you can make it your big purchase at that point.

Part nicknames
colinrichardson replied to tbird8057's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Good one - I knew what those were going to be just from the description. -
This looks really good, and I'm amazed at the way in which you've recreated (with pf!) so many complex functions at scale. I'm really looking forward to the video. PS - as I read "beet farmer", I read the rest of your post in this guy's voice:

I'll probably keep them in for a while, but pull them at some point. I will be keeping the body together for some time.

The most useful information I've found was the post here: http://youngspacers.blogspot.com/2008/04/opel-rekord-c-coupe.html which claims that Ivan Franciskovic is the builder, he seems to be associated with LPEpower.com at this time. Some other somewhat helpful info: http://youngspacers.blogspot.com/2008/04/opel-rekord-c-coupe.html http://www.opel-forum.nl/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=116183&view=previous

I've bought two copies of the 9396 helicopter over the past few months. Both have had yellow pieces in two noticeably different shades- one is more blueish and one is a bit warmer. Interestingly the colors are consistent across part types: all of the A type short panels are one shade and all of the B type short panels are another color. Is this a common problem? I've done some searching and couldn't find any mentions of inconsistency within one a brand new model. I've taken a photo to try to show the difference- it doesn't come through as distinct as it is in person. http://i.imgur.com/zQniVmh.jpg

I'm so glad they went with that blue. Looks like they switched out round connectors (I don't remember the proper name) for liftarms in a number of places. Also substituted a long thin panel for the short one at the base of the c-pillar. The new seats look really plush and go well with the 70s aesthetic of the rest of the car. Nice job Lego (and rm8 of course).
