  1. Just an idea I came up with: A granite-like brick! Just imagine how a large building made of these would look like! It can be anything but monotonous.
  2. If other people have some ideas, then yes, personally I haven't tried anything yet so I have nothing to talk about :) For now that is...
  3. Are they? I'll have to check, if they're in small ones perhaps I'll get my first HP set (that'll be the day!). Otherwise I'll think of something :)
  4. Remember it was the Pirates theme and Eldorado Fortress that introduced the CRAP baseplate, later very popular in Castle buildings. Mermaids! Why haven't I made any yet? This idea is so obvious I just can't believe I haven't thought of it...
  5. I've seen this before, I like that. I loved Moby Dick, both the book and the film starring Patrick Stewart. I'd like to see a complete whale, but it would be hard to use in scenes like this one - you now, Lego ships also aren't complete, you don't see their bottom parts, which are supposed to be submerged. A good idea would be building a whale with easily detachable stomach part :) - then the whole animal can be used for underwater scenes, and only the top part can be used for scenes on the surface...
  6. The Imperial Flaghsip is great. It would be my second choice in this poll as well... After the Carribean Clipper of course...
  7. As a geologist I tend to agree. Now that we have a few shades of grey in Lego, while building grey walls we can mix them freely (different shades of one rock), or according to some pattern (parts of wall built of different rocks). Thiis would look much better and would attract the eye more than one boring colour everywhere.
  8. It's not a war by any means! :) Just a friendly game. I'm especially interested in explanations of your choices.
  9. This thread is linked to the The Pirate LEGO DirectoryA "must visit" thread for anyone interesed in Pirate LEGO I know there's already a What's your favourite Lego poll, however since this section is called Castle and Pirates (although includes some discussions on other themes, but this poll is clearly suggested by the name alone), we shall see which one of those two lines is a master here, and which one's a slave. As the topic's founder I'll remain objective, but only till my next post :-D So if you were to choose between one of those two, what would it be?
  10. Yes, talking about inspiration I meant the idea of those cannons, but not the colours. I'll use grey instead of black, with the black cylinders serving as ammunition for the original cannons.
  11. BTW, why do the RBR and BSB in this poll have re-release set numbers? Especially when the pictures show boxes of the original releases? Just curious...
  12. Another lugnet link - so this is where I read about classic cannons being too big for narrow hulls. The ship shown there is the slightly modified Imperial Flagship with very nice custom made small cannons. They'll be my main inspiration for making small cannons for my smaller ships. I like the clever use of s and s in making the cannon's base and wheels.
  13. He can always take the name after the mutiny, and before it he may have a fraudulent name like Trustworthy Tom.
  14. Surely, we haven't seen original Lego soldiers/imperial guards buildings using tan bricks, but it's good to come up with something new on the subject. This fort has a very military look - no decorative motifs, a utilitarian design, and looks extremely sturdy.
  15. This is exactly what I meant it to be, I just couldn't express this in words, thanks! :) Yes, I don't like the steering mechanisms! None of my ships have them. Could you post a picture, I'm not sure what you are referring to? The truth is I didn't have original sails so I just came up with something that would fit the ship's colour scheme, as you can see using both original Lego and custom sails. Perhaps one day I'll think of something different. Probably in one of many part bags I've bought where it was mixed with other bricks. We've already discussed this ship in this thread.
  16. I agree, I've still got a link or two concerning custom cannons.
  17. It's the Armada Flagship that was supposed to be Spanish. However in Lego world these rules aren't so strict.
  18. The raft from the idea book is great, they could have released it as a regular set, it's better than all the raft sets originally released. It's kind of an improved version (with real sail) of 6257, the set I mentioned as being one of my Big Piratical 5. About minifigs held in prison and restricted in other ways - the 1996 catalogue shows both pirates and Armada guys hanging off masts packed in nets (see here and here).
  19. Have you seen this one? This is my ship, it is based in 90% on SES's instructions, of course if you don't count the colours which are totally different. Apart from colours, I changed some features I didn't like in the original model. The hull and many parts are ironically taken from the BSB, hence the name Barracuda's Eye.
  20. Yes the Cross Bone Clipper looks ugly, this is the last and the worst of all ships and it definitely looks like Lego'd run out of good ideas concerning ships by that time. I don't regret not having this one.
  21. I've seen all of those pages before, plus I recommend: http://news.lugnet.com/pirates/?n=4180 (some of these Norro's links are here too).
  22. Well, I like the idea of making custom cannons. They are useful when you don't have enough original cannons or they're too small/too big for your MOC. Those on board the ship in question fit nicely. I've heard the opinion that original cannons are too large for narrow hulls. I'm going to make some smaller custom ones myself and arm my smaller ships with them, preserving the original ones for bigger ships and the fort.
  23. No one I know would agree to make such a bet with me, knowing how easily the results could be falsified. So if you make no bets, no one cheats.
  24. Why would anyone do that? IMO the reason of polls like this is to see how many people like particular things, and there are no profits from this, the function of such polls is purely informative. So I see no reason to cheat.
  25. Yeeah, this thing would surely float... |-D
