No one likes copycats. Besides, I have a perfectly logical (for a fantasy world) explanation to it. But saying it out loud would spoil Ellaria's story arch, so I won't say anything more.

QM Note: Well, Namyrra is not a robot, is she? Why would she cast seal on an already sealed enemy? Results of Round Nine of the Sheep Meadow Battle: Mark the Ice Cube Tray hits Direwolf D (Direwolf: 175 health-(20x2=40 dmg)=135 health; Namyrra: -1 ether) >Namyrra uses Scroll of Sealing on Direwolf E - Succeed (Direwolf: sealed; Namyrra: -1 ether) >Namyrra (Fire) vs. Direwolf E - Shield (Summon Burst - Direwolf D: 135-(20x2=40 dmg)=95 health; Direwolf E: 175 health-(20x2=40 dmg)=135 health; Direwolf F: 175 health-(20x2=40 dmg)=135 health; Mark the Ice Cube Tray vanishes) >Benji vs. Direwolf E - Special Damage (no effect) >Cinna (Fire) vs. Direwolf E - Spell Aim (Direwolf E: 95 health-(12x2=24 dmg)=71 health; Cinna: -1 ether) Direwolf F - Free Hit vs. Namyrra (Namyrra: 25 health+8 SP-(15/2=8 dmg)=25 health) The Ice Cube Tray causes 40 ice damage to one of the direwolves. Namyrra seals another direwolf. Then her summon bursts, showering the wolves with ice-elemental damage before vanishing. The sealed direwolf is unable to use it's blood fang. Cinna conjures a small fireball to cause 24 damage to the sealed direwolf. The direwolf that was left without attention tries in vain to damage Namyrra. Three enemies remain. The last effect that hit anyone else than him in the battle. The decay-effect does not apply, since it's not applicable to Dak (except through a very off chance of confusion or hex, which cannot even happen in this battle).

So... should I add "flail" as a different weapon category, now? Thanks for sharing your expert knowledge, Peppy! Yes, you are free to keep your weapons as they are, just as long as their effects are not applied to your magic spells. It really sucks that few people have to "suffer" from this misunderstanding, but at least we can put this behind us. And I'll make sure this scenario won't happen again.

Heroica RPG - Quest #40: The Strivvian Job
Sandy replied to Scubacarrot's topic in The Heroica Archive
Ellaria goes rigid. "I apologize, Sir Boomingham. I will conduct myself better in the future", she says with the chilliest voice she can muster up. She then blames herself for bursting out her own disappointment into others. But she vows to never let the drunkard paladin to see through her. -
Flails fall better into the maces category, in my opinion as well. The "morning star" (a flail/mace) is a prime example of the differences between maces, whips and clubs.

Flipz already suggested this, and I did not approve. I don't want to mess with the weapon types any more than necessary. I don't want to have QMs guessing and trying to remember which weapons the rule exception applies, that just deems trouble. Mages can imbue elements into their weapons as well - you're not getting treated any differently on that respect. But spells are a different thing than physical attacks. The special effects don't apply to healing, either, and I don't think anyone has ever thought they would. You are out of line. You are free to disagree with me, but you are not free to ignore my rulings. If this is such a big deal to you that you can't accept it, you are free to leave the game. There has not been a rule change, there has just been a misunderstanding about the rules. I could've hosted all the quests myself to avoid these sort of misunderstandings, but then this game would not be what it is today. I truly appreciate all the hard work that the QMs have been doing, and I take the blame for not making this issue clear in the first place, but I have now made a clarification and it stands. The only issue in my eyes is the two weapons mentioned before. But since the QMs and the players are not approving any of my suggestions, I'm at a loss. If you don't meet me in the half way, these two troublesome items will be removed from the game. I don't think anyone really wants that, but I see little options... My point exactly. If I make some weapons an exception to my ruling, then I have a dozen players demanding that I exempt their weapons as well. The Bladerang and the Cat-o'-Nine-Tails will not be changed, and their effects do not affect spells either. Sorry for being such a nazi about this, but it's getting out of hands. I'm still the manager of this game, and I carry all the responsibility for this game. That's why my word is the final one. If someone has issues with that, take it up to Dragonator.

Ellaria looks scornfully at Boomingham. "Excuse me, a banana?! What am I going to do with this banana? I already have high enough health, and I certainly don't want to lose my precious ether." Ellaria throws the banana to Skrall. "You take it, Skrall. You're the only one without ether in this group, this will benefit you the most, I think." Ellaria pockets the 24 gold, not expecting to get anything else from her lackluster performance in the battle. -

Ellaria rubs her head. "Uh, that didn't go as planned... Thank you for the heal, Atramor. Now, we're inside the warehouse. Let's see what we can find... Oh, I have this magic compass with me, it's proven to be quite useful in situations where I have had to find something." -
The Book of a Thousand Creatures should really have been an artefact, not a weapon (books are not a weapon class to begin with, anyway). We could've avoided this whole confusion if it was, but we are all human, we make mistakes. I know I approved it when Scuba presented it to me, but I remember that I had doubts. Let's all be more lenient to each other (me included, I've been needlessly blunt about this issue). I agree that the effect on Nyx's book does not really work with the current ruleset. My suggestion is to split both the Cultist's Staff and the Book of a Thousand Creatures into a weapon (staff?) with the same WP and an artefact (a cloak and a book?) carrying the effect. That way we can all save us some future headaches. Are the players holding the items and the QMs who created these items satisfied with this suggestion? Because I see very few options besides this. I guess will have to be extra strict with approving all unique items like this in the future. The Quest Masters often like to use their imagination with their items, but the creations might not always fit the ruleset, like has been seen on several occasions now...

No, I just wanted to mess with Quarryman. Of course you can, it's been done before in my quests in the past. It mostly applies to double turns, but also to situations where an ally attempts something that might fail (like healing). Don't go overboard with this, though.

Ellaria's heart skips a beat as she sees the mighty ogre fall. "Wait! Let me pray for the roots of life to appear. They will revive Skrall while healing the rest of us at the same." Sending all her thoughts to Sylvania, Ellaria prepares to attack Scim from the front row. -

QM Note: Remember that you can make conditional actions, such as "I attempt to seal Direwolf E, and if I fail that, I will try again on the second turn. If I succeed, I will try to seal Direwolf F on the second turn." -
Yeah, it's odd that Carly hasn't said a word after the bandwagon started to BOING! No "I'm innocent, believe me!!!!11", no "Whatever, vote how you like", no "You'll see..."... nothing. But like I said, we first need to see if we are right about Carly, then its easy to deduce that Ralphy is on her side as well. If both of them turn out to be cultists, its likely we've narrowed them down to about a half of their original number. Or maybe we win by default by being so awesome and adorable and cute! Wouldn't that be great?! Then we can hold a "tax-free month", couldn't we, dear Lazlo? I love to shop tax-free, and this bunny needs some new furs... I think fox would suit my pale complexion the best (no offense, Virus).

No, you may not change your weapon type. Brickdoctor is free to create a Cultist's Broomstick in a future quest of his.

I've said it in the past and I will say it again: complex effects like that give me a headache. Can we drop this subject now, or do people still want to nitpick?

Weapons shouldn't have passive abilities unrelated to the weapon itself in the first place - that's what the artefacts are for. In the case of the Cultist's Staff, the flee-skill is not actually passive; it's initiated when an enemy is KO'ed with the staff. The ability does not extend to the use of other weapons (as it would on an artefact), so why should it apply to spells either? If you still find the logic behind this hard to grasp, picture the situation in your head: a mage casts a fireball with his left hand while holding the staff in his right hand. The fireball does not come from the staff, but the weapon in his hand only kinda amplifies the power of the spell (so that magic wouldn't be too underpowered). It's hard to explain a concept that's utter fantasy and could be thought of in numerous different ways, but this is how it works in Heroica RPG. Period.

No offence taken, but I did not actually change anything. You guys were just playing wrong. I did not create the Cultist's Staff, so I cannot be held liable if it's broken. You just have to accept the fact that you cannot do absolutely everything with one strike. I thought that thinking up suitable strategies and making choices were the very essence of why the battles are so fun to play, am I wrong? I'm sorry, but I'm not going to make this game any more complex by adding any exceptions to the rules.

Odd that it has only now come up... I have never applied weapon effects to spells in my own quests (feel free to prove me wrong, though). The Battle-section of the FAQ now clarifies this issue.
