A Buyer Protection Plan is available for $19.99. I don't think I've seen that before on a LEGO set. $99.99 seems like a reasonable price considering 8053 Mobile Crane with 1289 pieces cost $99.99 / £76.99. Paul, I purchased 8043 Motorized Excavator and 8110 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 400 in February 2012 during one of Toys "R" Us' Buy One Get One 50% Off sales. In fact, the lady at the store ordered them both online for me! Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

My Classic Trains (Locomotives & Rolling Stock)
DaveBey replied to kyphur's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Will your Train Repair Shop be designed for your great collection of classic trains or will it be more contemporary? Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave -
Based on the images available, the locomotive appears to have a 4-6-0 layout with drivers like the Emerald Night so you'd probably have better luck putting the 9V train motor under the tender, much like 10173 Holiday Train.Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

Worst Technic Sets of all Time
DaveBey replied to Rishab N's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The Slizer/Throw Bot and Robo Riders already received (dis)honorable mention. Speed Slammers also deserves to be mentioned as a "gimmicky" Technic product. The addition of tubes in the late 1990s and Modelling Elements in the early 2000s seem to detract from the technical focus of earlier Technic sets. While this doesn't make sets including those elements inheirently 'bad,' I believe you'd be hard-pressed to include any earlier sets in this list. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave -
I just read on FBTB.net's UK Toy Fair 2013 … Lone Ranger report 79111 Constitution Train Chase includes a complete circle of track. It also includes seven minifigures, which is pretty good for a train set these days. This might be asking a little much but I hope LEGO offers a (virtual) product collection of all the Lone Ranger sets, much like they did with Monster Fighters, CITY Mining, and Lord of the Rings. LDraw Parts: Unofficial Parts has links to a tutorial and .zip of all current unofficial LDraw parts. The basic idea is to create a separate parts folder for the unofficial parts and modify the MLCad .ini file to include that location. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

Mikibrick -- Those are some great trains; thank you for sharing! I really like the detail you put into the undercarriages. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

While this link is for for unofficial 9V track files, it may be useful when designing a layout or track ballast: Review Summary for 9V Train Track. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

A fast and cheap way to store your trains. Here's how.
DaveBey replied to robt's topic in LEGO Train Tech
For semi-permanent storage, would it not be better to disassemble the set(s)? I've purchased some used sets in the past and some elements were cracked (specifically Brick W. Arch 1X1X1 1/3 on some Santa Fe sets), presumably from remaining assembled for an extended period of time (5+ years). Perhaps my misfortune might save someone else's elements. Welcome, Richard! Congratulations on founding your LUG! I enjoyed the pictures of the events you hosted. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

Thanks for the picture and link, wondermonkey. TheBrickster's shelves look pretty sharp! Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave -

Floating shelves? Do you have a link/picture? This sounds like a great way to store/display some of my James Mathis-designed Santa Fe locomotives and coaches. I've been disassembling sets lately and using Ziploc bags with 3M labels (corresponding to bag numbers, if necessary) for sets without the convenient storage tray(s). I've found Xerox boxes work great for train track, either loose or in the track boxes. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave -
It looks like the entire www.city.lego.com/trains site is 'gone.' LEGO redirects the URL back to www.city.lego.com. Perhaps contacting LEGO Customer Service may be the next step? Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

New York Central: S-2 Electric - Thoughts? Advice?
DaveBey replied to Buzzetta's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Electricsteam - Would you be able to use 4633696: Plate W. Bow 2X4X2/3 in Sand Green and model the front and rear similar to the boiler on Emerald Night? Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave -
Very nice! Add a bit of orange trim and it's similar to some of the medium-duty BNSF maintenance-of-way trucks I see around town. Add a bucket, and it'd be right on! Before I scrolled down, I only saw the trucks from 3179 and 3677 and thought, 'LEGO already produced that in 10128!' Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

To flex the flex rail, use the Hinge tool (H). The issue I've found with the 75541/42 points in LEGO Digital Designer is they cannot attach to anything. When designing ballast, any 'attachment' point must be a tile and to place the point(s) on the ballast, you must build an external framework to support the point(s) from the studs on the top. I hope that makes sense... It does in my head. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

New York Central: S-2 Electric - Thoughts? Advice?
DaveBey replied to Buzzetta's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Buzzetta - I don't think you're limiting yourself by building the S-2 Electric in six-wide. It looks symmetrical front-to-back and left-to-right so you might be able to take a modular-style approach by mirroring the front-left with the rear-right and the front-right with the rear-left. (If that makes any sense.) The only tricky part appears to be the wheel arraignment. Are you looking to motorize this via 12V, 9V, or Power Functions? Here's a verrrrrry basic design using LEGO Digital Designer: The front and rear are different due to trying to get the roof design to work. The rear design works better but the proportions seem off. Anyway, hopefully it gives you a place to start and I can't wait to see your much better design! Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave -
Howdy robt! It looks like the seller is listing the individual parts, probably from parting out one of the LEGO trains with Power Functions included. If you look at the BrickLink inventory for the sets required to motorize the Maersk train, you'll see the item number used on BrickLink: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=88000-1 http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=88002-1 http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=8884-1 http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=8879-1 Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! There are points in LDD but for some reason they cannot be attached to anything. Look in the electrical parts section. Part # 75541 and 75542. When designing your station, don't use a baseplate and you should be able to design with points. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

I've noticed this as well. I believe the version with three holes was released before the version with only one hole. The instuctions for both 4549 and 4547 depict the version with three holes. The Additional Notes on the BrickLink reference page you linked mentions this but is worded horribly. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

Those are some great expansions; thanks for sharing! Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

I was curious how big of a loop I'd need to set up around the living room to see it in action. I know I have plenty of 9V track for this since I did my full-consist Santa Fe El Capitan but I may be lacking in RC track. I didn't want to drag out the wrong 'box o' track'! Thanks for sharing everyone! I feel kind of bad bringing up something I know's been done before but it's so nice to see what others have done. Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

Wooooooowwwwww... That's neat! I'm excited about getting parts now for my coaches. I went with blue and white as my two main colors. We'll see how it turns out! Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave

AussieJimbo -- That's a nice rail yard! I really like the boxcar variations. After viewing the nice Emerald Night consists here, I'm going with four coaches and began placing some BrickLink orders to make my design a reality. I'd love to see other custom color combinations since it's neat to see what's out there! Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! Dave
