  1. I am a little surprised Lego would decide to do this. Even with the Chima figures they have the animal head that goes over the normal minifigure one so why make Beorn's head attached to his hair piece? That doesn't leave many options for the head and hair piece, nor does it gove us a double sided face expression. Lego could of easily just used the Woody Legs as has been suggested numerous times if they wanted to make Beorn bigger. Personally I hope its just some sort of neck lengthener but I highly doubt it.
  2. Actually it seems very plausible. Look at the front box art of the set where the minifigures are shown off side by side: Beorn's eyes line up about where the orcs foreheads end and their hair start. If you look at Beorn's torso though, it lines up almost perfectly with the Gundabad Orc ones (shoulders line up, hansds hit same spot, etc.). Beorn's face actually looks slightly smaller than a normal minifigure head and positioned slightly higher, with a longer neck.
  3. I actually like the Castle Cavalry set (and all the LEGO Movie sets for that matter). I hear a lot of people criticizing that they look like they were built by 5 year olds, but personally I don't see it. What I see are intentionally goofy sets based on what appears to be an extremely goofy movie. I mean a movie about LEGO, with pretty much all LEGO themes, from different eras, and even superheroes in like Batman in it? What are you expecting, extremely serious sets or more City stuff? Sure some sets do seem a little slapped together like the western Escape Glider, but others seem to have really solid builds like the cop stuff. My biggest problem with the line is just the over abundance of black robots they use. I don't find their builds particularly interesting and they appear in almost half the LEGO Movie sets. LEGO probably could of done with a few less flying builds too, but all well. As a bonus LEGO did make a number of the vehicles have alternate builds so they CAN be used with existing sets from different themes. They also seem to offer some fairly unique things (dump truck, ice cream truck, plumber van, etc.). This is something I would LOVE for Lego to do in more sets as it just fits the toy line so well. LEGO could easily offer a few extra pieces for alternate builds or hair/head/torso options for figures which would increase the appeal of sets ten fold.
  4. Balin's Tomb would make much more sense for the set name than Mines of Moria since that's the specific place the set takes place in. I am guessing Lego didnt want a set named after a grave site though, or a character not in the set, lol
  5. I believe Lego didn't use the book chapters as set names because they don't have the book rights. It's pretty evident with some of the sets where they named it something very similar. I don't particularly mind most the set names, they describe the set fairly accurately. Some could use work though. I mean it's a bit silly naming something with 3-4 good guys and 2-3 bad guys a "battle" because most of us imagine WAY more participants than that, but it's understandable considering they want the set to be appealing and an interesting title.
  6. Quickbeam sorta looks like the ent in Orthanc, but his beard doesn't seem as pronounced. He does have a similar body shape though. He is probably the next closest after Treebeard Right, but the point was they have the exact same figure and are trying to sell it as two different types of orcs. It doesn't matter if he is a special character or not, he is named something different but there is literally no differentiating him from any other Mordor Orc released so far.
  7. Well in my defense only the digital copies have been out for weeks, the actual DVD and Blu-Ray hard copies just came out yesterday. I am hoping they will do a really good, complete EE edition of all three movies once they are released so I have waited to purchase them. It helps I don't find AUJ particularly good, but then again the book wasn't terribly amazing either imo (especially compared to LotR, though I know it was intended as a children's tale). Anyways, Dol Guldur Battle should be $70 here in the U.S.? That would make the most sense, it has 6 minifigures like An Unexpected Gathering and looks about the same size (maybe slightly bigger). $80 seems like a bit much for what we get (only one-two new molds really if you count Radagast's hat and Azog, even though he has appeared in limited quantities before). The Necromancer's chest and face definitely look gray in those pics though, where as before it was more an eery green?
  8. I find it extremely hard to believe that Orthanc is being discontinued considering the set hasn't even been out 6 months yet. Most normal Lego sets are in circulation for at LEAST a year, with D2C sets often being longer. As for the first LotR wave, ya, it is being discontinued. At least some of the sets are. No real surprise there considering it's been out a year and a half now.
  9. Extended Edition of the Hobbut: AUJ? Where is it? According the theonering.net, there is no extra footage of Girion or Dale, just a quick few extra shots of Smaug flying around in the present?
  10. 2:07.. Bard's black arrow flying towards Smaug? Looks like it's being shot from some sort of large bolt thrower though (which would make more sense anyways, never understood...
  11. Right, I have heard that argument dozens of times for why Lego includes a special character in their army builders. I can understand that. It goes against why they wouldn't label the ent in the Tower of Orthanc as Treebeard though. Wouldn't people be more likely to buy the set if they got an exclusive Grima, Saruman's bottom robe, AND Treebeard (and Gwaihir for that matter)? I mean I can understand Lego making the ent look similar enough to Treebeard that people can use him as such, and not directly labeling him Treebeard in case they get the chance to release a proper set in the future. But then why don't they do this more often? But they ARE sold as unique characters. Heck, one example is right in the Tower of Orthanc! They have the "Orc Pitmaster", but he is made of the EXACT same pieces and print as the Mordor Orc from the Orc Forge. He also is the same minifigure as in the Pirate Ship Ambush and Black Gates, but at least there they gave him some Uruk-hai armor to try and differentiate him a little. For Gwaihir it actually wouldn't be as bad because there really is nothing to differentiate him from the other eagles. If Lego really wanted to make Gwaihir, how are they going to do it if they want to release a generic eagle too? They would be identical. Don't get me wrong, I can totally see how this can put Lego in a bad spot (do we have the SAME eagle mold be Gwaihir and special, or label him as a generic eagle and then when we put him in more sets than 1 people are fine getting multiples?). They do this all the time with pieces though, re-use the same ones and label them something else. It's not fraudulent at all, it's a way for them to save money and re-use expensive molds.
  12. That's a normal sword just from a weird angle, nothing special.
  13. So the ring that is under the statue in Dol Guldur IS suppose to be the One Ring! And Bilbo loses his ring in Laketown? I wonder if this stuff is all actually from the movie or just little things Lego made up themselves.
  14. So it looks like there is no fifth set that is a store exclusive? Usually Lego has the store exclusives listed in their catalogs too ...?
  15. Ya, I thought about this. I also figured Lego might not want to label the eagle as Gwaihir since they have the same mold/print as the eagle in the Black Gates set (Lego might want something "special" for a named character to distinguish him). But then I thought about it more and nothing really differentiates Gwaihir from the generic eagles in the movie anyways, to my knowledge. He has no special markings and really isn't a noticeably different size than the rest of the eagles. It just seems kind of silly for Lego to pick and chooses who to label and who not to. Why didn't they just label Eomer as a Rohan Soldier since he looks enough like a grunt? The set would of had more army building appeal to some, and to others they could just say it IS Eomer since he looks close enough like him. Or why label Scribe in the Goblin King battle when they could of easily sold him off as a third generic goblin? I think Lego can get away with it more with creatures like the eagle and the Nazgul that arn't main characters and have no real distinguishing features, but it just seems weird the Orthanc ent has soo many similarities to Treebeard but Lego wouldn't label him as such.
  16. The Lego video game version looks even less like the movie version than what we got in the Orthanc set though. About the only thing they did better was the thicker beard and mid section. I think the explanation that Lego intentionally left the ent vague might be plausible. I just don't really see any other ent in him. Usually Lego uses a model or design for the basis for their creation, no? If so, which ent would the one in Orthanc be based on if not Treebeard? I have looked at dozens of ent pictures from the film and seriously none look remotely like the Orthanc ent we got. Treebeard is by far the closest thing.
  17. Also, for those voting "no" to the ent being Treebeard because he isn't specifically named, what then is the explanation for Gwaihir not being specifically named either? We pretty much know for a fact the eagle is Gwaihir since he is the only eagle ever shown at Orthanc in the movies, Gandalf whispers his name to the moth, and on the back of the Lego Tower of Orthanc box it shows Gandalf being rescued from the top of the tower by him. The more I think about it too, the Tower of Orthanc set has NO army builder value and very little multi purchase appeal (unless someone REALLY wants a ton of small black Lego pieces). You can buy 2x Orc Forge and 2x Black Gates sets for the same price as one Orthanc. That comes with double the white hand armor, double the eagles, eight Mordor Orcs (two with ears/hair!), and a slew of other exclusives like Gandalf the White, Gondor Aragorn, Mouth of Sauron, Lurtz, etc. I see no reason for Lego NOT to label the eagle as Gwaihir because they really wouldn't be losing anything. Even if people don't recognize the name are they going to care it's a named eagle vs a generic one?
  18. Who is the ent in Orthanc supposed to be modeled after then? I couldn't find a single ent that looked anything like the Orthanc one. Treebeard was by far the closest one I could find with several similarities. Keep in mind Lego regularly makes design decisions that aren't perfect to the source material. Legolas and Aragorn's clothing colors? The Goblin King Goblins and Moria Orcs having the same "normal" size legs when they are no taller than dwarves who use the "smal" legs (and Beorn not having the tall legs when he is supposed to be taller than everyone else). Gandalf and Lurtz having the hair piece they do when clearly Fili or Kili's would of been a more appropriate mold? The list goes on. I think having a beard not quite as full or some branches missing would be right in line with the other liberties Lego takes/has taken.
  19. So what do you guys think? At first I didn't think he was supposed to be, but after taking a close look at both the Lego model and Treebeard I started to have my doubts. Now I am now fairly certain the Ent in Orthanc is in fact Treebeard. He has too many similarities to Treebeard in the film, and too few to hardly any of the other Ents I have found. He has the big nose Treebeard has, the branches coming off one side of his head, the amber/oranigsh colored eyes, and of course the mossy beard. Here are some other Ents for comparison: Ash Ent Beech Ent Birch Ent Linden Ent Oak Ent Rowan Ent Willow Ent Sure some have similarities to the Orthanc Ent. Most have the same color eyes. A few have beards, like the Ash and Willow Ent, though they appear to be different shape and size. None of these Ents seem to have all the characteristics of the Ent found in Orthanc though, except Treebeard. Of course there might be other Ents the Orthanc Ent was based off, but I find it hard to believe he would look so close to Treebeard. So the big question is, why then did Lego not just come out and label the Ent as Treebeard? This seems to be the biggest reason people think the Ent in Orthanc is NOT Treebeard. With Lego though, who knows what their reasoning is? Sometimes they do some pretty strange things that don't really make sense to us. Why was the eagle in Orthanc not labeled Gwahir when it clearly is? I have theorized why not before, mainly because Gwaihir is never specifically named (except whispered) so people might not know the difference (or care). Treebeard on the other hand is named at least a few times though so he would be familiar to even casual fans. Maybe they wanted the Tower of Orthanc to have more multi purchase appeal'? I also find this hard to believe due to the price and extremely low minifigure count for the price. So why then, would Lego NOT just label the Orthanc Ent as Treebeard?
  20. Ehh, none of the existing Lego parts really look THAT much like her blades, but then again none of the Lego elven swords look that close to what they look like in the movies so far...
  21. I assume that's the case too since the Dol Guldur Battle set only contains Gandalf and Radagast (and Beorn if you include the Dol Guldur Ambush set). That doesn't seem like much of a battle with only 2 good guys. Then again the set IS named Dol Guldur BATTLE and not Dol Guldur Encounter or something. As for Galadriel, she does play an extremely important role in the LotR films (and more so the books), but I doubt most casual fans would even know her name if they saw her. She is on screen less than 10 minutes total in the film, she has very little presence. She kind of reminds me of the Pirate Ship Ambush... her role definitely changed the outcome of things much like the Corsair ships being taken by the undead, but it was just such a small unforgettable scene from the movies compared to everything else.
  22. Galadriel makes much more sense in a Hobbit wave, imo. She seems to have a bigger role there, and if I remember correctly she was suppose to be at the Battle of Dol Guldur. I wonder why she wasn't included in the Dol Guldur Battler set?
  23. I am sure we will get at least 4-6 LotR sets if there is a third wave. I would hope at least 5. There is no doubt something will be left out though, it's jsut a matter of what. I would guess the Oliphant, Balrog, Galadriel, etc. So far the past two (LotR/Hobbit) waves have only had 4 sets each, but the LotR one had the big D2C exclusive Orthanc and there might still be a possible Hobbit store exclusive we don't know about yet.
  24. Wow, those Gundabad Orcs look way more orange in the eBay listings than they do in the actual sets
