  1. Saw this on The Brothers Brick and I definitely going to use the 'studs-out stick' design for my next spaceship. It's too good to not use it.
  2. They do it for my German cups here in the US. I'm not sure if that gives me back the entire dollar's worth of refund, seeing as in Germany (when I got mine, at least) they said it was a 75 Eurocent refund, but it still goes through at the register.
  3. Whatever happened to the announced Scooby-Doo set anyway? I saw it pop up on the typical pop culture websites briefly, never to be seen again.
  4. I suspect that at least one reason for the base in the center of the reference image never making it to production is the massive size of the canopy. It beats out the bucket of the Technic Volvo loader in sheer size and would have been a nightmare to produce in trans-yellow without any minor defects standing out, not to mention being hideously fragile!
  5. I think in your case, given that you're working with parallel tracks, it'd be just about impossible to put any sort of switch into the track system... so here's an idea: The train becomes a double-decker system; passengers and other stuff goes on the upper layer, and cars drive onto the train and off at either end - at the end of each track the train pulls up to a ramp in order to let the cars drive on and off, sort of like the ferries that run between Seattle and other towns in Washington state. It's open at both ends so it doesn't have to turn around to dock at either end of the trip, and the upper level is reserved for people only, while cars and stuff go down below.
  6. Ooh, I like this. I'm a sucker for a cleaner UI design - even though Windows 8 and 8.1 didn't work well at all on a non-touchable device (IMO), I did like the style choices a lot.
  7. So far, there's two routes to creating a sustainable product that Lego could look into: either replacing the plastic entirely with a sustainably-sourced material (currently the focus of their research) or to find a way to manufacture the components of ABS plastic in a sustainable matter. Is that about it, or have I missed anything?
  8. Doesn't that just push the issue down the road? I mean, you give them money now for something later, and they use the money to fulfill orders now - then they don't have the money later when they need to fulfill yours. I may be horribly mistaken because I've never taken a business course, but I don't see an easy way out of this issue (without throwing more of their own money at it).
  9. And you're also paying for what amounts to a hand-built custom display solution - no wonder they're expensive!
  10. Question: If those pledges were revoked (or never paid), do those 'backers' still get the rewards they backed?
  11. Yeah, but they are looking at at least replacing ABS with an alternative (presumably if ABS turns out to be unsustainable for the long run). I'd say that's close enough!
  12. *cough* http://www.plasticsnews.com/article/20140218/NEWS/140219915/lego-looking-for-a-sustainable-replacement-for-abs
  13. Why is it that the italicizing is so hard to use on this forum? Whenever I try to backspace after having typed a line, my cursor will jump to the beginning of the italicized section and I'll end up deleting whatever's in front of my line - usually something like an image or the last fifteen words of the previous line. It happens with the bolding, underlining, and strikethroughs as well. I'm currently running the latest version of Chrome (auto-updates on its own). Any idea why this is happening? And no, I'm not clicking on stuff randomly, my mouse is too far away from my wrist to do that.
  14. Bet you can't go smaller.
  15. I'm actually surprised that they managed to sell out of the track, production issues aside, based on the hype from the Kickstarter alone. Especially since Trains isn't exactly one of the big sellers, and I'm guessing that people who regularly buy track are an even more limited subset of an already fairly limited market. It's one of those things that you'd only buy once or twice unless your layout is constantly expanding, unlike cheese slopes or tiles.
  16. I do recall that it's some sort of plant-product based resin - something renewable, at least. I'm actually wondering if it'll happen sort of like the premise of Gundam 00 - that is, alternative energy (in this case, a giant ring of solar satellites around the earth) makes energy so cheap that petroleum falls out of favor for making fuel, and is limited in use for plastics and such. I think we're moving in that direction with an increased focus on renewable energy and fuel efficiency, but it took space elevators for the solar power system to really take off in-story.
  17. I read an article about this a while back; a good portion of the research that's going into this project will ensure that the bricks made of the new materials will be more or less indistinguishable from our current ones.
  18. Just thought I'd mention, but the leftmost glass roof segment on your first picture is a bit collapsed. I think also that this is the first building I've seen that splits into 32x32 sections that don't stand alone as well. Nice work!
  19. It never does - for the release of 41999 (with only 20,000 units produced and a unique numbered license plate printed tile for each one) there was somebody who managed to get their hands on twenty, despite orders in-store being limited to something like two per person, I think? Apparently it's not uncommon for them to go the first store in the area, then the next store, and so on until they've gone and got the two copies from each store, then rope their relatives into doing the same thing for them.
  20. Oh good. I thought this was going to be something along the lines of 'hide yo passwords, hide yo credentials' - guess I was wrong. I'm guessing there's no 'Super Ground Vehicle' because they're not all the same model - the tractor is different from the two or three buggies I've come across, for example.
  21. The problems I have with the tracks is that the bars on the underside of the track links tend to get stuck into the slots on the small sprockets, for whatever reason. This causes the track to bind up and pop off in the same instant, causing it to jump around and making a horrible clicking sound - if it doesn't just lock up the tracks entirely. I suspect this is due to the the different mold types. I do have a small file that I could use to open up the slots on the sprockets slightly if I decide to use those ever again...
  22. Do you have a separate thread to talk about the slot car system you're working on? I feel like it deserves some attention!
  23. I was of the opinion that it's more of a 'would never really consider it' thing unless they're put somewhere prominent, like in a little display rack (like lollipops) at the register when you're checking out.
  24. There's no need. Lego is such a big company they know they have an automatic built-in purchase rate from their target demographics (and outside those demographics too), and as such there's no need to gauge interest in a set before it comes out because they'll inevitably sell at the very least 10, 20, or even 50 thousand units, depending on the set.
