Heroica RPG - Quest#100: To The Tower of Babel
Khorne replied to Sandy's topic in The Heroica Archive
"I have seen many battles. Judging the fighting capabilities by a man's boots is a strange habit, mage. I kill with my hands, I take lives with my blade. The boots are there to keep my feet warm." the Nord paused, "besides, if they do manage to disarm me or take me down in some way, they'd have every right to take my boots. Spoils of war. The strong take and the weak perish. It is the way of life. I'll see what path the gods have in store for me." A sly grin came to Eric's face and for the first time in the conversation, he redirected his gaze away from his sword and actually looked at Nur. "Of course, I won't make it easy for them to take me down. I will earn my place in the afterlife." Behind him he heard Throlar vomit. Eric turned around and chuckled. "Weak," he thought. He did raise an eyebrow, however, when the Dwarf claimed the cards. Eric was curious, but couldn't stand the thought of having to actually ask the Dwarf if he could take a look at the peculiar cards. -

Eric overheard the crew talking. "Let them come, then", he smirked as he unsheathed Godricsleif. He held the blade in the sunlight. "Let them come, so they can feel the edge of my blade. I do not fear these pirates." -
I'm a bit late to react on this, but do you also have this head? Maybe it'll work better for a female were-lion than the one you have now? It looks less explicitely male or female to me, so you can probably make it work for both genders.

Heroica RPG - Quest#100: To The Tower of Babel

After spending the night in the Merry Mermaid, Eric joined the rest of the party at the dock. In silence he boarded the ship. The sly grin that marked his face turned into a faint smile at the thought of being out at sea again shortly. To top it off, the party had even agreed not go on a Bonaparte vessel. Feeling quite happy, Eric was curious and eager to find out what else this quest might bring his way. He felt as if surely the gods' favor was his again. -
Oh oh, I want to post pictures of fancy Heroica papers, too! Here's a picture of stuff I've written pertaining to Eric's background and some foundations of Nordic mythology and politics. I don't use much of this explicitly, rather it's a handy back-up for myself to keep the Viking culture kind of consistent in how I portray it. I feel Eric's Northern background is as interesting to me as the character itself. It shaped him and guides his actions and way of thought in many ways.
-
I echo this. Some many different wishes and motivations. Looks like few people in the party are on the same page and even if they are, the main objective for most doesn't really seem to have the future of Heroica at heart. What a bunch of amoral egoists .

The Viking gloated. At least someone had a measure of intelligence and was on the same page. With a deep bellowing voice, Eric introduced himself to Sarge in a sing-song accent typical of those hailing from the North: "My name is Eric, farfar." Eric's cold blue eyes briefly crossed with Sarge's as he stated his name, little lights of mischief burning fiercely in them. The Nord firmly held his arms crossed over his chest. He saw no need in shaking the man's hand or whatnot. No formalities, he just gave his name and a slight nod, accompanied with a typical childish grin that equalled his eyes in terms of mischief. The Nord didn't bother asking the old-timer's name, he'd get to know him sooner or later. Calmly, he spoke again: "Farfar is right. Give the order already, Necromancer. Let us take the magic skipp and head for Dim Haven." -
I half-and-half followed the trilogy and for me, as an outsider with little knowledge or scope of the entire thing, I have to say that CMP's quest and WBD's quest seemed more interesting than Zepeher's. By no means I'm saying Zeph's quest was a bad one, not at all! But if I had to number them from most favorite to least favorite, that would be my list. As has been said (by Flipz, I believe), I too, sometimes had difficulties keeping the Red Lizards from the Four Boulders. I didn't always understand the story, but perhaps that is because I wasn't actually in the quest so I probably missed a few things here and there . Also, but that's just a minor gripe of mine, not really a criticism: compared to the entire invented vocabulary, names, culture and general background that the Orcs had, the Kingdom of the Red Lizard and Kingdom of the Four Boulders seemed kind of bland to me . It doesn't detract from the intricateness of the overall story of the kingdoms, but I just didn't really like those names for kingdoms. That being said, I really did enjoy reading the quests, even though I wasn't a participant. The roleplaying was great and the newer player definitely made a great debut.

Heroica RPG - Quest#100: To The Tower of Babel

"There are three ports there," Eric began, putting up three fingers as if speaking to a child, "filled with smugglers and others who know how to handle a ship. There's bound to be a way out there.", he ended. He kept his perpetual grin and despite growing irritated with the situation, an air of coldness and aloofness still surrounded him. "I'll say it once more: I suggest we take the magic boat, or whatever fan skipp we can find here, and we go to Dim Haven." he looked around at each of the heroes and smirked. "Our crew looks motley enough to pass as smugglers, cutthroats or mercs. We'll blend in." Eric paused and sighed. "From Dim Haven, we trek to Vega. It's the biggest city in the Darklands, so perhaps it is useful to visit it before going to the Tower? In case we need more supplies. Anyway, a city like Vega will surely have some information of use to us about the Darklands and the Tower." Eric grinned. " "Information" ", he thought to himself, "a nice way to justify the need for liquor, booty and bounty." Quite pleased with himself, the Nord stopped talking. He normally wasn't much of a talker, but when the others were wrong, he just needed to set them straight. -

Eric snorted and returned and equally crooked "smile". "Sure, I'll follow through with the mission. When have I not?" The Nord then replied to what the Dwarf had said. "Smaller is generally faster, except you're wrong here. It was explicitly stated that the Squidman's ship would be faster in this case. I say we take that one." Eric growled and rolled his eyes. "Hmph, the Bonapartes can hardly be called marines. They're nautical farmers who cultivate coin on the back of sea merchants and others who live off the sea. They'd rather strangle the Free Islands to death than loosen their grip and giving it some air to breath" -

Eric was about to comment on the old man's remark, but then the Yeti spoke and answering him seemd more immediate. "Like I said, Snowman, I'm not getting on a Bonaparte ship. You're ignorant to blindly trust the Falconer, who you've never met before." The Nord briefly directed his gaze back towards the Falconer and sized her up. Turning back to the Yeti, he gruffly said: "we either take the magic boat or find us another ship. I don't need niceties from the Bonapartes." -
Ah, okay, I must've missed the part where she said we could find a third way. Makes sense now .
-
Isn't the Squid guy's ship a different ship? Scuba's ship belonged to were-gators. The Squid captain was captain of a different ship, IIRC. Also, funny how both Sarge and Eric react the same way to the introduction .

Heroica RPG - Quest#100: To The Tower of Babel

The Nord didn't really care about the witch Barbariccia, in fact he had barely even heard of her. His concentration was far off. Instead he looked around, eyeing his fellow "heroes". Of every quest he had been, the current party was perhaps the most motley of crews. He figured there were few amongst them who actually signed up for the good of Heroica, but rather for the reward and promise that the Darklands gave. Eric had never been to Babeleth proper, his voyages had taken him on an occasional stop in Dim Haven, though. In a way he looked forward to seeing more of the Darklands. His eyes glistened as he heard the Metasimian speak of Vega, City of Sins. It seemed liked his kind of place. "I say we go to Vega via Dim Haven," he then eyed the Falconer suspiciously before continuing, "and we take the Squid's boat. We'll find a way back. I don't care if I'd have to swim back, I'm not getting on a Bonaparte boat." Eric snarled and his face turned into a vicious grin as he mentioned the name 'Bonapartes'. He hadn't forgotten his self-imposed debt to Reno.. EDIT: Seeing as Pyro posted as well: The Nord turned to the old man and the viciousness of his grin slowly ebbed away, but his faint smile remained at least mischievous. "Apparently it looks like we're here to push your wheelchair, old-timer." -
I know none of this is in no way "official", but I always thought of Terra Chima being somewhat like a Meso-American society, with the different kind of Were-species belonging in different castes (and Humans being amongst the lowliest of all, of course, because they are no Were): Eagles are priests who protect the Chi, Lions are warriors/guardians/rulers, Crocodiles are workers/warriors, etc. I have a more detailed version of it in my mind. I even had a very rough Quest idea for the Guild of Invision to go on an expedition there and do research on "Chi", but I have neither the parts nor the time to do such a thing. I'd rather host my hypothetical Norse quest first . Also, I'd hate to provide too much background and work out too much detailed lore for another culture and inadvertedly exclude other people, because sometimes I feel that's what I kind of have done with the Norse. So, I'll leave Chima open for others . Nooooo! Haldor... I probably even never got to talk to the guy. Well, seems like Eric is the only true Nord left in Heroica now .

Love the minifig posing. Clearly inspired by that scene from 300, but you pulled it off very well here!

In preparation of his next Quest, Eric wanders into the marketplace which was bustling with people. Having visited the place oft times before now, the Nord know his way around and quickly found what he was looking for. Eric sells: Murky Pearl: + 25 gold Total gold: 299 Eric buys: Pugilist Gloves: - 80 gold 1x Phoenix Essence: - 50 gold 4x Mead: - 60 gold 4x Smelling Salts: - 100 gold Total gold left: 9 gold Barely satisfied with the money he had spent, the Viking warrior then left the marketplace and headed for the library. Somehow, it felt easier in the early days of his Heroica career to get by..

Ow god yes, that would be so awesome . Too bad I don't have a lot to barter with. Like I said I really don't want to lose my Boots of Evasion, so they're not up for trade and only have 200-ish gold. Also, I don't think Scorpiox ever stated that he'd wish to get rid off or sell/trade Ognar's Beard, did he? Or did he say something about it in-quest that I missed? Still, the Beard combined with my Boots would be total win . Thanks for the heads up, other-Eric EDIT: Other than my gold, I also happen to own the spectacular Crocodile Belt! That's up for grabs if anyone cares. Maybe I should post a notice in the Hall.
-
Nah, I don't think I'll ever part with my Boots of Evasion. They're just too awesome and unique . I'd rather have an extra pair of Fighting Boots in my inventory than having to choose between them and only have one item. So Boots of Evasion it still is for me. Sorry, Pretzelboy . I had never really taken a good look at the class, but now that you've mentioned it, it certainly looks like something I'd like to play as. Chance of upgrading weapons in battle and having market discounts? Yes please ! EDIT: Nice sets, Scuba. Too bad the pictures are kind of blurry/washed out most of the time. Still, incredible builds .

Eric strolled into the Hall. The place had definitely been livelier in the past. He looked around for any face he'd know, but he only spotted some members of the last party he was in. Interested in finding out if there were any job openings, he continued his path towards the questboard. To his surprise, there were two open quest, that had difficulty finding heroes. Being interested in only one of them, the Nord signed his name under Quest 100. The warrior then slowly made his way to the bar upstairs and ordered some mead.

I want a new rule that states I can wear two different boots at once! One Boot of Evasion and one Fighting Boot! Tempted to buy a pair of those Fighting Boots, but I think my Boots of Evasion are more useful in battle, so it'd just be a waste of money now.

On the "Heroes Cocktail" topic: aren't they already used somewhat less now? With the nerf regarding the thieving trait of Rogues (and Raiders, etc.) a while back, their income took a dive and so they have less money to spend on Meads, Smelling Salts, ... I know I took the cost of the items in account when using them during #94. Whereas I'd used to use the items before or during every battle, I now doubted more before actually using them. I believe I even fought a battle without. I don't see why you'd want to "ban" the items from the general marketplace . If you want to lessen their use, wouldn't it be better to raise the prices? (not that I'm in favor of that , just a thought).

Okay, I'm back home with an internet connection, so I thought it might be appropriate to give my thoughts on the quest (which many people seem to do now ) Quest 94: Go Now, In Peace Overall I was pretty pleased with the quest. I've seen some Kintober quests in the past and they were rather well put together, with interesting characters and an equally good story in most cases. I didn't really follow all of your previous quests in detail, so there are most likely some references I missed during this one. I did like to see the return of the skeletons, though. I like the characters, but Eric doesn't, so there wasn't a lot of interaction. I really liked how much of the quest seemed to revolve around events that had transpired in the north, the land where my character originates from. Even though this wasn't set up a t front, it sometimes made it seem lik it was a tailor-made quest for Eric . All in all, it was kind of linear, but I didn't really mind. It was a fun quest. Long quests like the Dastan or Baltarok trilogy aren't really my cup of tea (even though the stories are awesome) so I prefer this kind of quest more (for me, personally). Battles I didn't really think the battles were that hard. For me, at least. I can't recall a moment where Eric was really in danger, but that's probably because we had heavy hitters like Violet and Althior. If we hadn't had Violet, the undead slaying might've gone a bit more difficult since only Althior was capable of dealing double damage with his diamond. Characters This has been (I think) the third party I've seen "fall apart". Often, Eric plays a part in this . The party was split back in #15, when I decided to take the Tritech scientist hostage and later decided to side with the pirates and let Remo escape. Then in #58, I wanted to side with Remo once more, which made Guts doubt and greatly distrust Eric. It's not that I intend to do that before I depart on a quest, but sometimes it just happens . Eric (me): Eric was his usual stubborn and arrogant self once more. Unlike my last quest, I decided to let Eric seek refuge in his memories of home/home culture more. He's been a wreck and now being part of a quest so related to his home, I thought it'd be only natural for someone like home to see signs of the gods during some events here. I also kind of like how his world views and upbringing make him the gods in other ways than the "standard" "southern" way. It makes him distinct in some way. Many will say his views are wrong and he doesn't understand the way the gods work, but in his eyes all the others are wrong and his people (and by extent him) are right. It made for some nice "clashes" with Throlar and McReary. Avalanche: I didn't know the character, so I didn't really know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. I like how you were distrusting of having Violet in the party. At first, I thought Eric and Avalanche were going to end the quest being buddies from the North, but Avalanche is apparently not from the North and hates undead. So that was a minor problem . Throlar: I half read the Brickdoctor quest you were on and was surprised how Throlar was now. I kind of expected you to behave in a way similar to 77, but I was glad you didn't. Eric doesn't like Throlar, at all. Even though they never met before, the things Throlar stated during this quest made Eric resent the dwarf. I like Throlar, though. I like how you established some kind of background "culture" for him and stick to it. Like when you mentioned Titaani burial rituals or when Throlar bids farewell in some language. I don't like Meldrim, though. I don't really get why he's there. Maybe I just missed some things, but I really don't get the point of having him around. Still, I was pleasantly surprised by you and loved the interaction. Althior: I remember Althior as a fun guy, joking around with Finnegan, so I was surprised to seem him as a brooding Necromancer . I probably missed too much of his story to fully know what's going on, like why Althior is undead and all. Both are characters are rather more of the silent, brooding types so there wasn't that much interaction, even though I would've loved to get to know some more of Althior. I do kind of miss the old Althior, though, but I can totally dig the new one as well . Phew, that's it. I had a great time, so thanks to the party members for playing and the QM for hosting. Loved it.

Eric glared at the dwarf. The stupidity and plain ignorance this being showcased was baffling. The Nord rolled his eyes. Had he any sympathy for the dwarf, he pity him, but now he only felt disdain. "Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth and let people think you're stupid, than speak and confirm that you are indeed an idiot" Hell yeah, Oscar Wilde quotes! I'll be gone 'till monday without internet. So that was probably it for me. Thanks Kintober for hosting and the others as well. It was fun

Eric listened carefully to what the priest had to say. He longed for his home when Värtland was mentioned. Too long had he stayed in the south, but not long enough to earn his redemption. Eric hadn't felt more Norse than now in a long time. He had felt forsaken and abandonned, but now he sees clear again. "Ennoc is a weakling god of little power in the north. There it is Helvetia who looks after those who please her. Your daughter was most likely saved by the Ice Mother, because she had turned her back on Ennoc in the past. Alas, it seems to me the godess had no further plans with her and so we haven taken her out. Such is the way of things." Bitterly he added, "one moment you're the chosen, the next moment you're a nobody. Alone. It's in such times that one needs to show how strong they are the most."
