I know I am in the minority here, but I really dislike pneumatic functions. The only interesting thing about them is that like hydraulic systems, pneumatics use air which is a fluid. The sagging after a day or two is not good for displaying and playability suffers from the jerky motion of the valves.

8265 Front Loader

8265 is a great set! I was hesitant about spending more than $150 on used Lego's but there was no way I could pay the $250+ for a new one and feel like I got a good deal. Even if I had used Bricklink the total would probably be close to $150 anyway. -
Another one of my "holy grail" sets came a few days ago. The first being the 8420 Street Bike and now the 8265 Front Loader. I bought it used and it came unassembled with 100% of the parts, instruction booklets and all the necessary power function accessories to motorize it. It was $160US including shipping and while that is still expensive I saved around $100 by buying used. The build process was really fun and the finished model is actually better than I had pictured it and it matches perfectly with the 8043 excavator. I was trying to figure out which real loader Lego modeled the 8265 after, and to me it resembles a mid to top of the range Caterpillar.

8420 Street Bike
therealjustin replied to therealjustin's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I only had room for one Technic bike and was deciding between the 8420 and 8051. The 8420 won in the end because it is 8 years old and availability is hard to predict for the future. Prices for used sets are decent now but for how long? -
8420 Street Bike
therealjustin replied to therealjustin's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You just blew my mind! I have never noticed this before but it totally makes sense. The front and rear tires experience forces from opposite directions, the front from braking and the rear from acceleration. -
I recently added one of my all-time favorite Technic sets ever, the 8420 Street Bike. The 8420 features many unique parts such as the rims and staggered width tires, printed windscreen, brake discs and rear shock. The overall look is that of an Italian superbike and the designers were obviously influenced by the Ducati 999 but also the Gilera CX as seen by the front and rear single sided wheel mounts. I added panels to the gas tank area to fill it in and a gas cap on top. I would do a full review but there is no way I could match the already excellent write-up by Starstreak found here. Having bought this set used I was curious if the set came with the rubber tires already on the rims in the box? I noticed the tires on my set are opposite of each other, with the tread pattern in different directions. It seems like a lot of 8420's have this same issue since many photos show the same thing.

Nice color choice! It feels very futuristic! I like the dual shocks in the rear too. -

Even without any UV fade do the older red liftarms have less saturation compared to new ones? The ones that came with my Unimog are vibrant and bright while the ones on the 8420 are slightly duller but not as transparent looking if that makes sense. I don't think it is UV fading because even some of the pieces that were in on the inside away from all light have this issue too. This is a picture of the 1x3 liftarms. The one on the right is more orange-brown than red.

I have noticed these color variations in the past(2010-present sets) but when I tore down a used 8420 I bought today the differences in some of the 1x3 thin liftarms is staggering. Half are bright red and the other half are darker and less saturated. They almost appear brown in sunlight! The two 1x9 red liftarms also exhibit this difference but they are not as bad. The seller said he built the set once and just left it so I don't think anything has been switched. Everything looks brand new save for the expected layer of dust.
