That will be quite a list! I suppose my collection is technically not ultimate because I have not built the Archimedes Screw. On the other hand, I added a couple of thousand tiles to the floor of the ball factory and I am in the process of doing the same thing to the crane loader so that's even more parts.

The annual images are not very large. They are only 800 pixels. You only get the hi res version if you click on it. The animations are already completely optimized. None of the files are very large size. I don't shrink pictures in the browser; I always resize the images to 400 pixels. The big picture is only available after clicking, and even then is not very large. The problem is not the content of my site but the traffic. With an average of 30000+ visits per day, I am going to have trouble even if the files are small. I guess I should try to be less popular. -
Hard to say. I do not think it is an improvement over the Step Module V2 because it loses the excellent 4 phase output ramp. Maybe he just didn't think it was innovative enough for its own video?

Defining a Supercar
Blakbird replied to deehtha's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A fair definition, but in the context of LEGO I consider the original 856 and 8865 auto chassis to be supercars even though they are not based on any actual car. A bit like UCS, it hard to make a firm definition. I do NOT consider 42039 to be a supercar even though it is the same scale and is a car. suum cuique pulchrum est -
Nice work! To me, this one seems like an earlier version of the step module rather than fork to fork, but there are similarities to both.

Well, they did a small scale engine. Set 858 had 4 different engine models. It is a rare and wonderful set. Something large like Barman's V-8 would be much more educational though. It has accurate crankshaft geometry, accurate valve timing, fiber optic spark plug wires with accurate firing order, etc.

Sounds great but I have no idea how to do that. Can you point me to any references? -

Exactly. Every time someone reads this page of the topic, the server will call for a copy of that file. That could be thousands of times. Ideally if someone wanted to use a picture from my site they would make a copy and host it on their own site. Even better, they would also attribute it to me. There was once an auto blog that used one of my gear animations by just calling it from my site. They used my entire bandwidth in 20 minutes and did not even acknowledge that I was the creator of the image. That's just the Internet. Not much I can do about it. -
Why LEGO Technic is so great!
Blakbird replied to Andy D's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You can make a lot of cool stuff with atoms. They are very versatile. -

I have thought about it a few times. In my experience "unlimited" never really means unlimited if you look at the fine print. There is always a catch. The hosting service I use is owned and operated by a friend of mine from my rocketry hobby which makes it convenient when I have to deal with the occasional problem. I have a feeling that a significant percentage of my bandwidth goes not to people using my site, but to people who are linking to my pictures and/or animations for their blogs or advertising. -

Yes, it will be back up on June 1. 100Gb is not a lot of storage, but it is a lot of bandwidth. The files for the entire web site consume about 2.3Gb of space. The fact that I am going through 100Gb of bandwidth implies that people are not just coming for a casual look, but actually reading a substantial portion of the site. There are some oddities in the stats like the fact that more than 6% of my traffic is coming from http://nemzetiborze.hu, a Hungarian site for classified ads. -

The site always gets a lot of attention when I post updates. Earlier this month I was getting more than 64000 visits per day. -

I am over my bandwidth limit for the month. I am pretty surprised by this because I have 100Gb allowed and my site is just text files and pictures. -
After a whole bunch of work doing photography and texture mapping on the planets, I was able to come up with this! Sure looks a lot better than plain hemispheres.

I was not planning to. I am hoping that not everyone has the power problems that I had so it will not be necessary. For modules which have different versions that have changed over time, I was only planning to do the most current version. I consider the model you referenced another version of the step module. However, this project is not just about me. If others have interest in those modules and wish to send me LDraw files, I would be happy to make instructions.

42056 - Porsche Speculation
Blakbird replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's true, but real flat plane v-8 cranks are symmetric about the center of the block, so the LEGO version is still not right. True, but in this case it is easy to modify the LEGO engine to get it right. I always do! This one has a crossplane crank! That's because a real horizontally opposed 6 cylinder crank is not flat. The crank pins are 120 degrees out of phase. -
42056 - Porsche Speculation
Blakbird replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, it is an it isn't. The version in the model is indeed a horizontally opposed 6 cylinder engine so it looks like a Boxer, but the crankshaft configuration isn't right. It would need 6 crank pins instead of 3 to be a true Boxer, but that would make the engine much longer. Other than an inline 4, I don't think LEGO has ever had an engine with a proper crankshaft geometry. All the cranks are flat plane. -
It bothers me that I don't have enough power when your video shows that your module works fine with the same design. Tonight I am going to go a friction hunt, isolating each system until I figure out where the problem is. By the way, I also have a draft ready for the elevator and planets!

Who knows what is going on with my power problems. Obviously it works in Akiyuki's video, although he does mention the M motor really strains on his blog. I did check all the sources of friction and found that it took very little to run the crane, so I don't know what the problem is. If people can make it work without my extra motor, that would be best! Edit: I've added a lousy iPad video which shows the operation of the module using the changes I made.
