The gray shocks have a softer spring than the yellow shocks. You need to use the soft ones. Yes, the hubs are the ones from 42000.

There's been quite a bit of discussion on this very topic already. Many adult fans agree that it would be more fun to have an unguarded motor and do any adjustments in the model. The older 4.5V and 9V motors were like that. My guess is that Lego is trying to make Technic accessible to a lower age group just like they are doing by making the instructions so simple with 2 parts per step. For example, small models can be directly driven from a motor output using an XL motor.

Real or Third-Party part?
Blakbird replied to TasV's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That part was introduced with the Unimog. It is part 92911. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=92911 -

Instructions are finished and rendering now. Final stats: Parts: 4200 Pages of Instructions: 301 Lines of text in the LDraw file: 24548 Number of LPub meta commands: 1526 Number of LSynth runs: 58 Time invested: ~8 months I'll put in some inset views to clarify all the wiring runs, and the instructions should be ready by the end of the weekend. -
Sad to hear you are selling. I've had to do this at important times in my life as well. Here are my thoughts. Forget about Craigslist. You won't find a buyer who knows what this stuff is worth. Bricklink is really only an option for you if you are selling complete sets. Incomplete sets are only worth a fraction of the price. Selling the parts individually is an option but it would involve a huge investment of time on your part and it sounds like you don't have that kind of time. If you go with eBay you would be selling this as a bulk lot of parts. There are a LOT of bulk lots on eBay so it is difficult to stand out. You might only get $0.01 per part or less. To get more you really need an inventory of which parts you are selling. I think your best option is to try to sell the whole lot to someone with a Bricklink store that specializes in Technic. That seller can then list the parts individually since that is their business. I can recommend a few sellers if you need advice. Last option would be to sell them to me! I'm constantly buying Technic parts on Bricklink so getting a pile of them at once is not a bad idea. Shipping would be a problem though. In what part of the country are you?

Tow Truck XL
Blakbird replied to dikkie klijn's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
At long last, I have finished synthesizing the more than 30 individual wire runs. The result is shown below. You can see 2 XL motors, 7 M motors, 4 pole reversers, 8 LEDs, 3 receivers, 8 extension wires, and a battery. You can't really appreciate the difficulty in simulating the wire runs from this image alone because they look so tidy, but making them so tidy without interfering with any parts or themselves was the hard part. I can't pass up the opportunity to show the other pictures as well. Below is the mechanical image which shows the 78 gears and 3 linear actuators inside the model. And here is the pneumatic layout. There are 7 pnuumatic cylinders, a compressor, and 3 switches as well as all the associated tubing. So what does all this glorious complexity look like if you put it all together? I asked myself the same question and couldn't resist making this combined image since I'd already put all the work into making the CAD. I'm putting the finishing touches on the instructions now. -
Zorex questions
Blakbird replied to legomania94's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm not aware that anyone has made a brick-built bucket for the Zorex. Instead of looking for instructions, you should try to build one yourself and then share the results with the group. Note: I have merged this topic with legomania94's other Zorex topic. Please put all of the future questions and answers in this topic. -
If I remember the original discussion of the contest right, LEGO admitted that they were actually going to lose money on the exclusive sets. With no development budget, custom packed boxes, exclusive parts in small batches, and selling the set for the same price as 9398, they didn't make any money. I think the decision to limit the production run to 20000 was just a way of limiting the losses while still promoting the Technic brand. (I have no inside information about the above, it is just speculation and heresay). Therefore I think that the only way LEGO could be convinced to make more of these would be if they also sold them for much more money. However, it appears the demand is there so maybe it would be worth it. It would be interesting to know how many 9398 sets they produced, and therefore over how many units they get to amortize a typical development program.

8458 vs 8461
Blakbird replied to RockeTeK's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Aren't the front and rerd suspension identical? If rear is working and not front, it suggests there is too much friction in the links in front. You really need stiffer springs to improve the problem you are talking about, but they are already the stiffest available. You could try changing the length of the lever arm. -
I had such a list, but it was wildly inaccurate. I started with the 9398 inventory and just changed all the red parts to black, but that neglects all the different red parts in 41999. Assuming Bricklink has an inventory for 41999 now (it didn't at the time), you can just do the same thing. Download Brickstore if you don't have it already. Import the inventory for 41999, then delete everything that isn't red. Change what's left to black. Upload that to Bricklink as a wanted list, and you are ready to go. There are some exceptions like 2L axles which will stay red.

Licensed Technic Sets.
Blakbird replied to JTS's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't think you are ever going to see any Star Wars Technic again. They were not popular and sat on the shelves for years. Star Wars fans didn't like them because they don't like Technic and there are no mini figures. Technic fans didn't like them because they don't do much of anything. Obviously there are exceptions and some people did like them (such as me), but I think they were a money loser for LEGO. Given this, I think LEGO is reluctant to expand Technic into any other licensing outlets that are outside of its main focus of construction and other vehicles. Unimog was probably the most logical choice and if we see more licensing I think it will be that type. -
Red Coupé V12
Blakbird replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, I figured that out and I even added it to the CAD file already. I also put a length of ribbed hose across it because I thought it looked better. I can see why that axle is required because it stiffens the supports for the shock absorbers. -

You didn't have that problem because you didn't screw it up like I did. I found a spot in which one of the cross brace axles was mislocated by 1 stud. This was interfering with a couple of the triangles and bending them forward. This reduced the distance, and that jammed the gears. Unfortunately, once I finally found it I had to rebuild almost the whole chassis to get that bracing out and moved. Afterward, everything worked great. Here are my photos of the model and build process. The first shows the way I broke it up into modules to make it easier to build. This was both successful and a failure. In terms of being able to look at the CAD file and figure out how to build the module, it worked great. I was able to rotate the module in space and see enough of the construction to figure out how to put it together. The problem was that the build was not actually modular, so after having build all these modules they didn't combine together into the car very easily. This meant there was a lot of rebuilding again. My wife said it was like a huge puzzle, and I agree. I enjoyed solving it! -
Red Coupé V12
Blakbird replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I finished building this last night. It is a lot bigger than I expected! This is one of the most heavily braced constructions I have ever made. That means that many of the chassis parts can only be added in a certain order and, since I didn't know what that order was, I ended up building and rebuilding many times over before I got it right. I had one issue that I spent almost two hours trying to solve in which a space for the transmission gears which should have been 5 studs long was very slightly (1/10 stud) less than 5 studs so the gears wouldn't turn. Drove me crazy. I got so mad that I shortened one of the clutch gears with a belt sander. But I finally fixed it and got the whole thing assembled. I will post pictures later. Very well designed car; I like it a lot. -
Yes. This model was designed by Erik Leppen and you can find photographic instructions at his Brickshelf page. I made the CAD file using those.

Batteries and Battery Packs
Blakbird replied to Philo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks, I hadn't noticed those photos. I can see now that the cells occupy only a very small portion of the internal volume, so that explains the relatively low capacity for the size. -
Batteries and Battery Packs
Blakbird replied to Philo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I am surprised to see that the capacity of the PF Li-Po is so low (~1000 mAh). Considering the size, you can get R/C 2 cell Li-Po's that size with 3 times the capacity. Do have any idea if the actual lithium cells are flat cells or round cells? I am also surprised to see that the starting potential of the alkalines is not closer to 9V. -
Because you cannot actually do what the article tells you to do. There is structural bracing in the way. This advice comes from 8043 (from me actually!) where it was actually possible to just turn the gear around to fix the problem.

I love this truck so I decided to build it as well as Madoca's sister vehicle, the similar scale super car. His pictorial instructions for the AWD include a parts list, but the super car did not so I modeled it in CAD to find out what parts to get. Here's the obligatory render. I think this car looks like the Cadillac XLR, although I'm sure other likenesses can be found. One of things I like the best about this is its unusually small scale. To get an idea of how different it is, here it is next to a large supercar (from Erik Leppen).

42008 42009
Blakbird replied to Tacker's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What is the purpose of this topic? It is probably not useful to the majority of readers on this forum. -
The problem I am having putting the aftermarket tires on the wheels has nothing to do with the reinforcements in the new wheels. It is due to the inner bead ring on the wheel. Both the old and the new wheel have the same problem. You can fix the problem by cutting off the inner bead rim, but I didn't want to do that with the "special" wheels. You can see in my photos though that the tires fit well enough anyway that they look fine.
