Parts Unique to THIS Set Only
Blakbird replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That would be useful, but the only way to implement such a thing is to have a tool that already has the inventory of all sets. That's the only way you can know which parts are unique. And of course that can change when a new set comes out. A part which was unique may cease to be if it is released in something else. We are all hoping that happens to the 1x6 thin liftarm in yellow and the #4 angle connector in yellow. Of course, these parts are only unique in that color. A far smaller number of parts are totally unique. In general, LEGO would never produce molds for only one model. -
Modification 8264
Blakbird replied to legomania94's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You will probably not find anyone who is willing to design your solution for you, and it is asking a lot to expect someone to do so. Why don't you try a solution, take some pictures, and then show us which portions you are having trouble with? -
Tow Truck XL
Blakbird replied to dikkie klijn's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm afraid I don't have that information. As discussed previously in this topic, the best idea is to get a long length of hose and cut to length on installation. Go back a few pages and you should be able to find the discussion. -

What sort of help do you need? -
Red Coupé V12
Blakbird replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You are welcome to use my file if you like. -
OK, I have put a Brickstore parts list in a temporary location here. Feel free to download it. I made my CAD file by looking at vsync's photos, so you may want to start there as well. There are a lot of changes to the door, the rear fenders, and the hood. I have not built it in real bricks yet, so there may be more. My conversion to the servo involves even more changes.

Land-Rover Defender 110

I used old light gray axle pins and could not tell the difference. I think you could even use tan with no notice. The 3x3 dishes should really be metallic silver. -
Red Coupé V12
Blakbird replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't recall needing a 4L light bley axle anywhere. That might have just been a mistake in the CAD file. In this model there aren't really any exposed axles in which the color matters. -
I know this is an old topic, but I felt I needed to revive it with an update. I was browsing Brickshelf recently and happened upon vsync's folder in which I found a blue version of the Little Devil. It has a lot of part substitutions because of unavailability in blue. I liked it so much that I made the substitutions in my CAD file and ordered the parts to convert my copy to blue. I changed the engine pistons to blue and the shocks to white. While I was at it, I also converted the model to use the new servo motor for steering instead of the old M motor. What do you think?

I was just re-reading my old review of 8043 for some reason, and reliving the discussion of the initial problems people had with the lack of power to lift the boom. You may recall that LEGO released a service pack with redesigned linear actuators. The linear actuators basically have more internal clearance which gives them less internal friction but more wobble. For me personally, this fix never helped and I like the old snug actuators better. The problem was obviously a lack of power and there was little to no ability to change the gearing within the tightly packed model. At the time, the only motor options were M and XL. The XL had plenty of power but didn't fit without major mods (like Jurgen Krooshoop performed). My question is this: now that the L motor is out with more power than the M at nearly the same size, has anyone tried putting it in the 8043 and does it help? What about the V2 receiver? This should also deliver more of the electrical power to the linear actuators. I have a feeling that this just might work but I don't presently have any extra L motors to try it out.

The header used to have a link to "set index" where you could find Eurobricks member reviews of LEGO sets. I used it as a handy reference to find reviews I have written. It no longer shows up in the header. What happened?

Larger Pneumatics
Blakbird replied to Lakop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I would change the wording somewhat. Linear actuators are not at all realistic in function because real heavy equipment hydraulics function nothing like linear actuators at all. However, linear actuators are realistic in motion. The main reason the pneumatics are not realistic in motion is because air is compressible but hydraulic oil is not (much). Having a valve with a throttleable orifice would help a lot in terms of control. -
Yes, there are a lot of things I think it would be interesting to build. A flap system would be really cool, but the missing component is a planetary (epicyclic) gear set. Linear gear systems have been done extensively in LEGO, but I think mechanisms and linkages could be much further explored. For example, the Fowler motion of a trailing edge flap would be fun to replicate. I've also considered doing a working replica of a landing gear actuation system complete with mechanical sequencing. It would not look that interesting, but mechanically it would be awesome. The "dihedral synchro helix" doors on the CCX which are replicated on Nathanael Kuipers' silver supercar are one of my favorite mechanisms. Yes. For example I was the first one to flip one of the drive gears on 8043 to synchronize the linear actuators during their stroke. For the most part official sets are very well optimized though.

Larger Pneumatics
Blakbird replied to Lakop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Chances are very low. Many have been asking for this for many years and it hasn't happened. Pneumatics are very expensive parts for LEGO to produce and very few sets have them. They would only make new parts if there was a business case that showed they were needed (function could not be achieved by other parts). The Design Team has mostly switched over to Power Functions and linear actuators because of the ease of motorization. -
I wish I could. You are correct that I am an Aerospace Engineer and certainly have the technical ability. I am simply not gifted with much in the way of creative talent. That's Crowkillers' Gallardo converted from red to white. Some of them are actually difficult to identify from only a front view. Here is a list of all the cars, from left to right: 1st Row: 8145 Ferrari 599, Lamborghini Murcielago by Crowkillers, Pagani Zonda by Erik Leppen, Lamborghini Countach by Skyliner 2nd Row: 8653 Ferrari Enzo, 8448 Super Street Sensation, 8880 Supercar, 8865 Test Car 3rd Row: Lamborghini Gallardo by Crowkillers, Little Devil by Jurgen Krooshoop, Sunbeam by Jurgen Krooshoop, Black Dragon by Jovel 4th Row: Concept Car by Nathanael Kuipers, Vampire GT by Crowkillers, Roadster by Nico71, 8860 Auto Chassis 5th Row: Vector W8 by Skyliner, Pony Car by Nathanael Kuipers, 8649 Nitro Menace, 8041 B-model, Supercar Deluxe by Crowkillers 6th Row: V12 Coupe by Lipko, Porsche 997 GT3 by Crowkillers, 8146 Nitro Muscle, 8070 Supercar 7th Row: Supercar by Madoca 8th Row: Koenigsegg CCX by Jurgen Krooshoop, Silver Supercar by Nathanael Kuipers, Bughatti EB110 by Erik Leppen Now I just have to find something for that empty spot!

Tow Truck XL
Blakbird replied to dikkie klijn's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Last I heard, several people were working on building this model. Has anyone finished it yet? I would be very interested to hear how it worked out and see some pictures, especially of color variations. -

[MOC] Swingloader Mark Two
Blakbird replied to D3K's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Since you are giving the instructions away for free, would you mind if I posted the LDraw MPD file so that people can see the model in 3D? -
Only one way to be sure. You'll have to go fire several thousand bolts from it and see how it holds up. As a Technic guy, I'm just as interested in exactly how it works and how it is strengthened as in the overall design itself. Is this model still assembled and there any chance of some detail photos of the mechanisms and assembly methods?

[MOC] Swingloader Mark Two
Blakbird replied to D3K's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Sure. It took some time, but here is the functional view. Bigger version at Brickshelf. Have you posted the updated instructions yet? -
Very cool build! Welcome to our forum and the world of functional Lego building. I have seen various Lego weapons before, sometimes functional and sometimes full scale, but I think this is the first time I have seen a full scale working compound crossbow. The "compound" part is what I find most interesting and seems to have been deftly handled. How well does it hold up to the forces structurally? Any problems with weakness due to the large longitudinal slot?

Sadly, I do not have an attic. If I did, I would use it! 10 years ago I lived on 3 acres and I built a separate 24x24' building just for my LEGO collection. At that time I also had all the Space sets. But now I am on a small lot and cannot add a building, so I only have my house.
