Very cool. But as a table, what happens with the raised letters? And the random ridges? Also, interesting consequences in the event of coffee spillages, and I can imagine people getting annoyed when writing on the non-smooth surface (I've tried it - writing on SNOT has its disadvantages...)

You've formatted the code correctly, but the pictures aren't showing up. The URL of the pics takes me to a page on the Lego site, saying that The page you are looking for cannot be displayed etc. I think you've got them stored on your browser as cookies or some such thing... I'd recommend using www.brickshelf.com to store your photos - there are tutorials here if you need them. Looking forward to seeing them, always good to see another POTC MOC! Edit: I see you've put them up as forum uploads; there's only a limited amount you can upload per month on EB - so putting them on Brickshelf would be better. The auction scene is great, the poles in the water are very iconic (at least to me!). I love the well and brick-built dog too. Any plans to make these in real life? I'll move this to Pirate MOCs, as that's where it belongs

...and a new fad begins! I take it the headpieces fit on quite well, then?

I believe the original PaB walls had quarter-sphere containers, rather than half-sealed tubes. These could be easier to make and would be easier to get parts out of, as they have no edges or corners on the inside. Some sort of plastic mixing bowl, sawed in half, and glued onto a strip of wood that can be attached to the wall would be a good solution. From a MOCing perspective, however, I find that removable and portable containers are much easier to use, and fixed ones are annoying when using large amounts of parts from one container.

Review: 5987 Dino Research Compound
SlyOwl replied to ZO6's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Thanks for the great review! I remember wanting this badly when it came out - but looking at it in closer depth at the time, dismissed it as blocky and ugly. In retrospect, it's got a lot going for it - and is so incredibly Jurassic Park style that it's a shame I missed out on it. However, apart from the T-rex, the dinosaurs always disappointed me with their rigidness - I would have liked much more functionality in them - how else are we supposed to properly re-enact those great scenes from JP? An interesting thought, though, on the subject of dinosaurs: T-rex and baby t-rex -> Jurassic Park II - hunters trapping the baby and breaking its leg to get at the mother Stegosaurus -> opening scenes of JPII - the stampede Pterodactyl -> JPIII on the cliff/cage/bridge area Looks like TLG paid a whole lot of attention to the films, as well as the obvious character and scenery similarities across the line. Those printed roof pieces are outstanding - got to check them out on Bricklink right now! -
Parts that just can't be taken apart without swearing loudly

Razor blade as a lever? Other than that, can't help you, unless you've got an industrial-strength vacuum pump at home! -
On the right, plus or minus brown eps, hook and pegleg.

Welcome to Eurobricks and Classic-Pirates! Feel free to introduce yourself here That's a mighty fine collation you've got there - the Skull's Eye Schooner is one of my favourite sets, so it's always nice to see it in a suitable scene. And the outpost is coming along well, good luck with it! BTW, your pics were quite large - so I changed them to links. Could you resize them to 800x600, please? Tutorials are here if you need them. Thanks.

I'm going to have to go with Badboytje's Orphanage There was a Castle one, and a Star Wars one - so they're becoming popular. But once a theme is done once, it may become largely exhausted in terms of ideas...

Good work all over, I especially like the mushroom. The top of the tree looks a little flat, though, and the vegetation screen is a bit uniform.

AFOLs contribute a little under 5% of LEGO sales
SlyOwl replied to Rick's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I heard 25% somewhere before... I guess 5% is still a huge figure - but easy to understand given eg. army builders, who buy ~50 of impulse sets/small sets like Cannon Battle and Crossbow attack. £60million? That's a huge amount. If an AFOL spends £1000 per year on Lego (which is a lot!), that still equates to 60000 AFOLs, so the actual number is going to be even more! -
Thanks for putting this together, I'll have to refer back here often. I had a vague overview of the set numbering in my head, but this clarified it Some sets do share the same number, which confuses me, though - in the Collector's Catalogue, some of the earlier sets, although totally different, have the same numbers...

I think there has been some interesting discussion going on - essentially a debate over whether people liked the line or not. Much like an essay, it starts with a controversial statement and then "Discuss". So I'll amend the title, and hopefully it'll steer this to calmer waters. If not, it may have to be scuttled. And as for my thoughts, like any good essay, I'm going to say there are both positive and negative aspects, which have already been covered above

Hehe, very funny! Very good use of the harness. I'd like to see an expansion of this theme... Fruitpunk? Veggepunk?

[UK] More free Lego from Mirror Newspaper (Racers theme)
SlyOwl replied to Big Pete's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Interesting, I may have to get some of these, but they're not nearly as good as the City or Star Wars ones. All the same, cheap Lego! What's the thing the boy is holding? It looks like a box, but the car on it isn't one featured there... -
Hehe, that's awesomely goofy! A great parts selection in brown and tan, I may have to pick this up! Thanks for the review, with classic Svelte add-ons

Feels a bit like Cave Racers I love the overall scene, especially the layout, and the propellor sharks are hilarious! The coral is simple yet effective, and I particularly like the tan corner plates to build up sand ridges. The white octopus craft is a bit chunky for my liking - a cleaner connection between beast and craft would have helped.

I used to use A4 paper stuck onto a bit of cardboard (like this). The edges of the paper show up quite a lot, especially once the glue starts to de-stick. Also, the blue pigments in the paper show up when photographing, so you get quite a bluish tint. Currently, I either use an ironed bed sheet for larger MOCs, being careful to smooth out wrinkles, or white poster-board (I think it's called): hardboard sheets with a white laminated side. These are the best I've found to date.

In answer to the numerous queries about identically shaped minifigs (Luke, Han) - they only had one of each shape available. Same with battle droids - there was only one, despite the many variants around. I have to admit that I went into my room, took my tray of minifig headgear and slowly worked my way through the lot I think it's possible to tell whether something is printed or not by the texture of the printing...

How do you keep your LEGO sets in good looking shape?

There's a load of topics in the General Lego Discussion Forum - just browse around a bit. Here's a few highlights - http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=38825 http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=37001 http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=36714 -

POTC is an excellent source of not only ideas, but also scenes as well. My Tortuga MOC was based on those few short scenes in Tortuga, with all the drunken debauchery. I also have the guidebook to the POTC Ride at Disneyland (haven't actually been there, got it in a library sale here in England...), which has a lot of concepts behind the ride, which then inspired the films. So a lot to work with there. Other than those, to be honest, I just make things up as I go along!
