All of their animal followers remain silent, but look clearly nervous, the two direwolves sharing a scared looks. Poe lands on Warlen's shoulder, and looks in his ear. <You ever clean these out, caw?> -

"Miller. My name is Miller. When I say Elder, I do not mean a fully grown dragon. I mean this son of a b*tch is so old he's called The Ancestor. He was born before dragons even learned how to breathe fire. No, he... roars. He inhales, and lets loose a roar so loud it'll kill you. My great grandfather received one head on. By the time he received medical help, one of his arms was twisted backwards, his ribcage was smashed, he was deaf in one ear, and he had a concussion. All from it's roar. That's... That's why I started getting uncomfortable after that Direwolf mentioned the loud sounds preceding the killings." -
We'll have to wait and see. Maybe I should just have him die randomly, and play as the first ghost in Heroica RPG.
-
As a ghost, maybe. Still not quite sure how I want to end it, I don't think Sorrow is going on any more quests...
-
Sorrow might need one of those soon... again.

Nice! Does Karie have the proper rep for Minstrel, or is Harlot still on the table?

"It's a personal matter, but... It may very well be your business before long. You see, the hunting guild didn't collapse because of some organizational issue, or something petty like that... No. They went out as they wanted to in, a blaze of glory, their base on the top of the Barrier Mountains laid waste to be the Elder Dragon Lethauros. ...And now, after a hundred years, the dragon may have returned." -

"I haven't been here "long". Granted, I've been hunting in this place alone for the 22 years of my life, but I had to take a month break from the hunting grounds to check up on some personal matters - my sister had fallen ill. I come back to the forest like this this morning, and, you know the rest... ..Except, you don't know what came those a hundred years ago. Have any of you ever heard of Lethauros?" Miller speaks grimly, eyes downcast. he seems to hesitate speaking the accursed name, "Lethauros." -

QM Note: Fourth-elf, actually. "I'm a descendant of the hunters of the hunting guild that was stationed here. My great-grandfather was a member, an esteemed one, too. They collapsed about a hundred years ago... Meanwhile, I saw the surrounding forest was beginning to suffer, and came to investigate. I ran into that foolhardy scientist, Gregor, and... You saw the rest." Miller cocks his crossbow, unloads it, reloads another arrow, and cocks it again. he does it several times, distracting himself from something. -

The party begins their ascent. As they begin their walk up the Barrier Mountain trail, the soil goes from rich and fertile to sandy and rocky, the path eventually just becoming a jumble of stones under their feet. Poe heaves a caw of relief, the two young direwolves following closely behind. <That was a close one, I was afraid the little ones would try to eat me...> <We woulda! Lucky you, apparently we're on the same side right now or something. Don't be fooled by his whole "smite you with lighting" shtick, my dad is a huge softy.> <Yeah! We coulda taken yous! But maybe it would be better to solve this whole forest thing first, my tummy has been rumbling for days now.> <These guys better pull their weight, or at least stay out of our way, caw... But I can relate to being hungry. I was, before you guys handed me that banana.> "Glad to be here. I suppose. I don't think I got your names? I should know them, before we throw ourselves into mortal danger. And if my guess is right..." Miller trails off for a second, looking longingly up the side of the Barrier Mountains... "Well, this is going to get a lot more dangerous a lot faster than you folks might anticipate." -

The stumps Warlen blasts not only split like Jin's did, but they shatter, leaving no evidence of the stumps besides wood chips in their place. The mage manifesting the face of electiricty only further impressed the alpha direwolf. The beast takes a few steps back, before speaking. <You've got me outgunned, too. I suppose even if we fought, I'd lose for sure.... Hnnrgh. Let me make you a deal. I will keep these two men here-> <Actually,> says Miller, finally demonstrating his ability to use Animal Talk. He looks oddly pale and discomforted, despite his previous composure in the face of danger. Why was he nervous, when the threat was defused? <I'm a hunter. It may be in your best interest, wolf, to let me follow along. That way, you have one more person trying to end the threat on your home.> <...Fair enough. The old man stays though. So you have insurance that I won't eat him... Ogo, Oro!> <Yes, father!> <Follow these... heroes. They will not harm you, because if they do, I wil not hesitate to end the old man's life. Likewise... If I eat him, my sons, while you still live, I give these people every right to end your lives in punishment for my mistake. Got it?> <Yes, father!> The alpha turns back to the heroes. <You may pass, and I hope you understand the terms of the deal. If I do not see you and my sons by sunrise, I will assume you are dead, and I WILL eat the old man.> "Wait?" says Gregor. "Am I staying here, with... him?!" "You'll be fine, as long as we are timely. Direwolves are not ones to put their cubs in jeoopardy like that. It's almost sundown now... That gives us the entire night to end this." The party gains EXP for succesfully defusing the situation! "Now, let's move. We have a mountain to ascend." says Miller, glaring nervously up at the peak of the Barrier Mountains. "That is, ofcourse, if you want me to come along." -
Thhe only issue I have with that handling of the trait is that, as treting it as a passive thing, it essentially became an entirely different trait altogether. If the knight initializes it and gets that PM (which Kiray might've, I could very easily be missing context) that seems like a good way to go about doing it. Also, Jesus, Zeph, was the altar boy stealing blessings from the people who were meant to be getting them or something?!
-
No, it's actually an exceedingly GOOD thing. 134 was designed to be something of a departure from the rest of my stuff, and I like how it's turning out thus far.
-
The reason why I mentioned it is because the 134 party is about to succesfully use it to partially cirumvent, or skip, half of the battles for the quest.

Jin growls as he hears the recollection of the hero's deeds. <...You're mighty presuasive. Perhaps you do have the best interests, and the ability to end this. But whose to say that you're more qualified than I am? I see you have a mage... I also see two devestated tree stumps behind you. i don't suppose it'd hurt nature any more to use them in the game I have planned.> The Topaz Flies buzz around Jin's back, an electrical current dancing between his dark fur. He howls, rubbing his paw through his charged-up coat, before releasing it in a will aimed bolt of electricity. The stump he hits splits in two. <Prove to me that your powers of electricity outmatch even mine, travellers, and maybe we have a deal!> A little bit of pyrotechnics was all it was going to take to convince Jin to stand down now... But it might take a decent amount of ether, too... -
I've been considering using green text to indicate things that wouldn't have normally been said/done due to diplomacy, just so players can get a better feel that ther diplomacy has having a tangible effect. Too meta?

<Heroes of Heroica. Hm. You've been known to slaughter my kind in the past, but I bear no grudges. The hunt is the hunt. But to negotiate, though... That's a rare thing. Tell me, dwarf - and the rest of you too, I suppose - what have you done as a hero?> -

<And how can I be positive that whatever is responsible for this won't just pluck out your spine and use it as a back scratcher? You are not greenhorns. Tell me of your victories!> The situation would require some careful wording, and perhaps a diplomatic air... -

<We're dropping like flies, plain and simple. Whoever see what's responsbile for it never reutnrs - they're found dead, too. The only thng we ever are able to notice about whatever menace is currently unleashed here is that i's incredibly loud. We hear the gruesome sound several times a day - a horrific sound, and then suddenly, the forest is trashed and things are dead. I found my brother with every single bone in his body broken, almost all of his flesh stripped from the bone. So many others met that kind of end. So don't you dare say we're some sort of "bad guy"for doing hat we need to to survive! If surviving means eating these two, then to hell with them!> "Nope, no brothers, only a sister. Now, in regards to the wolves... I already tried bargaining with him. His name is Jin, supposedly. And he's not backing off any time soon." <And if you get in the way, I'm sure you can imagine what happens next. My advice? Leave. Now.> QM Note: You can indeed just walk right past this battle if you feel nature should take its course... "Such a fascinating form of symbiosis! See that yellow glow, the small specks, on the alpha male's back? Those are Topaz Flies, electrically charged insects! They're powering up the alpha male's abilities in exhange forshelter in its fur, and the food that gets trapped inside. Fascinating! I'd be tempted to go over and catch some, but alas..." "Listen, doc. I'm sure you can deliver a rousing speech in front of your fellw eggheads, but you won't be able to if you get eaten alive. Stay back, and don't do anything stupid..." Would the party fight? -

<What? I don't know anyone named Saliva! What and who are you blabbering about?!> <I think he's one of those crazy folk, boss.> QM Note: Sylph rolls a -3, accidentally bluffs the entire country of Dastan into thinking he's a crazy axe murderer. "They're not going to lay off of us, that's for damn sure. Rules of nature and so on - kill or be killed." -

Warlen can find nothing else of note in the watchtower, the place apparently only designed for the Hunting Guild to use as a vantage point. Perhaps to track prey? Warlen digs up some broken crossbow arrows, perhaps belonging to the hunters that once used the tower. The party heads northwards, entering the forest. The path they saw committed to memory, the party weaves through the trees and brush, the path swerving through nature. The place was unusually silent, the hirping of birds and the rustling of animals gone. The weeds swing morosely in the breeze, the party noticing a few more of the split trees they saw originally. The only organisms they see are frenzied insects, quickly returning to their nests, and small, fleeing animals, who finally had the sense to run away. Finally, they reach the end of the forest, and hear an ominous growling. The party finally reaches the foot of the barrier mountains, and press onwards, the sound growing louder and louder. Forging through one final barrier of plant life, the party comes across the sound of the noise. Two humans stand, their back against a wall of stone. One, judging by his attire, was the lost Gregor. The other, who was currently unidentified, was brandishing a crossbow at the animal assailants - a pack of Direwolves. One was massive, and had an odd, electric air to him. The others seemed to be just barely adults, and were severely malnourished. the huge direwolf catches the party's scent and whips his head around to see them, his eyes filled with hunger. <Eh? The hell? You know these two?> The biologist speaks, voice trembling. "Uh, travelers! T-think you, could, uh, help the gentleman in the orange hat some assistance here? W-we have an issue on our hands, yes, yes..." "You could say that." says the man, loading his crossbow. "Some reinforcements would be appreciated, yeah? Name's Miller."
