  1. I think I found my Black Falcon leader. In my world the Lion's are the royalty, the Falcon's are just the most powerful house and most likely to overthrow the king if they wanted to. Lannister's vs. Starks kind of thing. Torso is from Bard (The Hobbit).
  2. Its so hard to judge these, probably every one of us is swayed by our dark age. For example I had no idea 7946 was even a set until today - I stand by my 6086 vote but thats a really nice set too, I might even try to find one for sale. I do like that era of lion/dragon knights.
  3. Madewithbrix's design is impressive for sure but feels more like a house than a castle. So it scales nicely with the blacksmith but ultimately doesn't really have a place in my display.
  4. Doesn't IP refer to a companies own internally developed intellectual property, i.e. Ninjago, Nexo, Rock Raiders, Black Falcons etc? AKA IP and Licensed are perfect opposites? Not an accusation, that's just how I've always used/understood it but now I'm second guessing myself...
  5. I couldn't agree more with this. Hocus Pocus for example, its project page even talks about how the upcoming movie makes it a great marketing opportunity. So it was never about being original and creative, it was about what's going to make Lego money? I think I'm on the same page, all this licensed stuff has zero appeal to me, but I also acknowledge that Lego has a huge market and obviously themes like Star Wars and Harry Potter sell like fire and a lot of people love those themes. I just wish they didn't come at the expense of Lego's more creative/IP themes like castle, space, pirate etc. I mean there's what, 10(?) iterations of the Millennium Falcon now? The literal antithesis to creativity is releasing the same model over and over. I can only imagine if they'd have given us a castle theme instead of just a couple of those SW rehashes. But licensed sets print money, end of story. TLDR I just don't understand why Lego can't do both.
  6. Just a random question. Does Lego have a thing against reusing CMF pieces? Why use a technic piece to make that mace instead of the really nice mace piece only available with the frightening knight and that ninjago guy?
  7. This is amazing, neat way to use the launcher bricks in the base too
  8. Speaking of LOTR, I completely forgot that Amazon's coming out with that show. What are the chances Lego might revisit that theme?
  9. I'm not sure what counts as 2013 Castle, but I also think The Hobbit/LOTR should be included. My ranking is some weird mix of nostalgia and genuine interest 1. New Black Falcons 2. Black Falcons 3. Wolfpack 4. Forestmen 5. New Lions 6. Black Knights 7. Dark Forest 8. Kingdoms 9. Lions/Crusaders 10. LOTR/Hobbit 11. Royal Knights 12. Fantasy Era 13. Knights Kingdom I 14. Fright Knights (long gap here) 15. Knights Kingdom II I just really didn't like the Fright Knights. In fact I'd suggest their release is what kickstarted my dark ages which also means I'm not super familiar with all the KK's, Fantasy, LOTR etc. The Ideas Blacksmith is what really brought me back into it. Favorite Set: 6086 Black Knights Castle Favorite Mini: CMF 15 Frightening Knight Favorite Theme: Modern Black Falcons, because I love the updated minifigs.
  10. I’m fairly certain the lego flyers they used to include in sets called the forestmen Robin Hood back around 1990, but I always remembered the wizard being Majisto. Probably because Majisto’s Workshop came out when I was just getting started. (In Canada)
  11. Yep, I bought way too many 3/1 castles partly justified by pumping up Lego's sales numbers, but it was really just to build up a collection of pieces and BF's. And now in hindsight I have a ton of yellow bricks that I'll probably never use, so I should have just went the PAB/Bricklink route Ergo, the problem with 3/1's. They're a creator theme selling a castle, not a castle theme.
  12. Fantastic build, my only problem is those lady dwarves are missing their beards! Would love to see Lego revive the dwarf mini's, especially with the hinged short (medium?) legs.
  13. Interesting, I never thought about them respecting those orders this many years later. I think I'm gonna go for it. Worst case just be really careful, but I'll blow a gasket if I somehow break a cow lol. Now to decide which one to get...MVR or MMV hmmm
  14. Bricklinkers are gonna have a hayday. That, or there's gonna be a whole lot of opened packages in the store.
  15. I'm still in the early stages of setting up my Lego room so definitely no set system yet, but I had a few of these Dewalt shallow pro kits in the garage and I'm loving them. Remove the lid and hinges to keep things clean, but the lid still sits nicely on top to keep dust out. The trays are removeable which makes for easy access when building. My only complaint is the handle is a lot of wasted space, and I haven't found a way to buy more trays if I wanted to ditch the double sized trays and just use the small ones (or even better, get half/quarter sized trays and I can start sorting by color too). I especially like that the tray walls are near vertical and very rigid, so there's minimal wasted space like you see with the food containers that are usually angled out. They're a bit expensive so I'm not sure I'll be investing in these but the ones I have work great. Curious if anyone knows of similar organizers to this that are cost effective, make good use of space (no handle), and have good selection of tray sizes?
  16. I have a chance to trade my sealed 1:8 porsche for a sealed MVR or MMV (Joust is also an option). I'm okay with the price point, but my hangup is the brittle brown pieces. Both sets have a lot of brown, and its all pre-2018. How bad is the brittle brown issue? Is it worth the risk, or should I just try and source the parts through PAB/new sets as per my original plan? The cost would be at least as much or more this way, but then no risk of breaks.
  17. I've got to agree with this, its the same problem with all the 3/1's - they just lack in context. There's no supplemental sets to create a world, there's no good guys/bad guys, the only animals are brick built. As an AFOL I'm only buying it because I'm desperate for castle stuff, and I know my nephews couldn't care less not because its castle (they obsess over my stuff) but because its just a boring standalone set with no bad guys, no vehicles, no "enemy bases", nothing.
  18. Castle for me has always been benchmarked against the Robin Hood, King Arthur and Crusaders era. That's why the Anno 1516 sticker in Castle in the Forest drives me nuts, its about 500 years late.
  19. I don't mind if the sets are mostly 3-in-1 (and hopefully Ideas/Icons), but I really hope they throw us some battle packs or more Castle/Fantasy CMF's to go with it. Minifigs are (more than!) half the fun in this theme.
  20. I view the castle as more of a keep than a walled city, in which case the whole thing should be a large fortress and in that sense would dwarf the blacksmith (or even more accurately, the smith would be part of the keep itself, similar to that instagram post shared by SirBlake). For that reason I might modify the blacksmith into more of a tavern/inn, or just not display it next to the castle at all.
  21. I actually prefer the silver, I think the BF’s as they appear in the Blacksmith are my fav minifigs to date. I’ve been using my PDG gear for my green knights instead.
  22. Mines a chaotic mess right now, but I dedicated a spare bedroom to be the Lego room and its got a table to display sets/MOC's on. There are very few sets outside of that room, only the Bonsai in my living room next to the TV. If I move (currently house shopping), I hope to get a much bigger Lego room and then set up an entire world similar to what guys are doing with modulars/city (think Bricksie's basement). I've got so many ideas for it but no space currently!
  23. I've always treated the castle theme as a playscale theme just because a minifig scale castle would cost a fortune and take up all my spare space. Plus while they're super impressive, those giant castles you see at Brickworld etc are, to me, just....big. I think it loses some of the magic after a certain point. I'm thinking I'll ditch the Blacksmith set altogether and try to modernize and incorporate 6040 into two or three 10305's for a larger, beefier castle. Seems like the blacksmith would be inside the walls anyway?
