I agree with you, I also dislike those David vs. Goliath head on bouts. My comment on categories was on dividing digital vs. real. I'm against division in that matter, and I've highlighted possible issues if the future contest goes down that road. Back to your point, regardless of the builders preference (digital of real), future contest should have maximum part limit in given category; call it Mini<50pcz, Medium<3000 or Open>unlimited pcz. On a mentioned LEGO Ideas that part limit is 3000, and I think that is a fine number both in economical and size aspect.

In regard of real vs. digital... First scenario (divide and conquer): Two separate categories is excellent idea, and here is why: if we have two categories then (a builder like myself) can enter both categories with the same build since I build first in digital and then with real bricks, and thus my chances for winning prize raises rapidly. What's that? Now I hear moans and cries that's not fair, you can enter only one... but wait a minute, how is that fair? I used my CAD knowledge to create something, and then I used my money to build it. Why am I not allowed to compete in two separate categories with the same design after all the effort invested? Mind you, my effort is double than yours. Before I get hammered down by a lesson on a herd morality - thank you Nietzsche, I'll humour this fairness nonsense and proceed to the second scenario. Second scenario (call it Tactical competing, like -Tactical voting- only better): Two separate categories is excellent idea, and here is why: by making two categories, and tyrannically permitting only one per design, a builder like myself can wait and see which category has fewer entries, less winning entries, and then with impeccable timing enter digital or real build category, and thus my chances for winning prize raises rapidly. Conclusion Making two separate categories, of us vs. them, solves only one melodramatic problem but at the same time opens another can of worms. So by all means, let's have two categories instead of one. LEGO Ideas has only one category and the winners are usually those who build the best original design - say... that's an interesting concept! Proposition Instead of making two - or ten - categories (where every Tom, Dick, and Harry can feel like a winner), we continue to have one category and focus our time and energy on improving building skills in the medium each of us finds most pleasurable, digital or real - or both, and give our best try each time out.

I think it's great. While the thicker masts gives a chubby appearance, it makes it look more cute and playful. You know, like a chubby cat which melts hearts of random passerby. I also like the completely new colour pallet. Black rowboat works well. Nitpicking alert: the flag is blowing in the wrong direction Overall, great re-make and thank you for sharing your result. I received just today (after a month or so...) parts for my version and Sin Island. Hopefully I will share my real build soon.

I second the idea of adding a rule of forbidding to vote for yourself - either we all vote for ourselves or none does. I second the idea of adding a rule of minimum 10posts - I would add to this no accounts (even with 10posts) which are made after the voting starts. .... I suggest adding a rule of mandatory vote for all the contenders. Brief explanation: If Builder has time to make an [ENTRY] post, he has time to vote. Failing to vote falls either inside the category of 'tactical voting' or plainly showing no respect to fellow builders, their ideas and effort, or the community at large. This goes also for giving his feedback and thoughts about Creative Critiques in given time frame.

[CONTEST] Return of the Classic Pirates - WINNERS
Marooned Marin replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
A 21-gun salute to all involved in this contest and to our Governor who made it happen. -
Thank yee! Fantastic idea to steal borrow it from Harry Potter and put it in good use here.

Bravo @Cincinnati once again you are nothing less than amazing! Your ability to pack so many details into one MOC is unparalleled. Question: This fantastic detail caught my eye, what is this piece? From what set?

I think that this is something on which we can all agree. In any case, the whole contest and cooperation with fellow members was a most pleasant and fun experience. Why thank yee, you've made my day with this comment. I'm glad to inform you that a new ship design is well underway. I'm in the process of buying bricks and plates for a test-build, and if everything goes as planned, it will be revealed somewhere in late November. I can only say, that it's a not-stingy-LEGO-style 3400 parts Re-Make of the most popular LEGO ship released in 1989, and then re-released somewhere in 2000.

[ENTRY] - King Kahuka's Outrigger Boat (Mini Set)
Marooned Marin replied to kritch's topic in Pirate MOCs
If we are being honest, I felt sure @Oky would win with the Fortune Idol (another Islander set) And I've just downloaded yours instructions from Rebrickable -
While almost all Creative Critiques were eager to help, suggest and improve submitted designs, I want to highlight @iragm who not only provided elaborated detailed constructive feedback throughout the contest, but also went a step ahead of other and had test-build my digital mini-set entry, and got back with his findings the same day, which I found very helpful. I also liked how he read and re-read description text beneath the images and then went to writing a comment. I mention this because I'm under impression not all would-be critiques bothered to do the same. As far as I'm concerned, Iragm was the best creative critique during this contest and I hope he will stick around inside our Pirate waters and provide helpful feedback to other [MOC] and [WIP] topics in the future, and in time perhaps add nice avatar. I will also use this opportunity to give my praise to @Rogue Redcoat who managed to provide wholehearted support and encouragement during the contest.

Based on the information I have, Sloop Windy sailed second inside the Mini-Set building category. With so many captivating small entries I consider this to be a fantastic result. The same can be said in regard to the Sin Island, which I honestly did not expect to outshine several other beautiful designs, but it did. While we wait for the official announcement of the winners, I will take an opportunity here to give my sincere thanks to all of you who have taken time to support, comment and finally vote for one, or two of mine designs: @iragm @NOD @Cincinnati @Piraten @hatchpattern @MontyMatte @Quotenotto @bingowaldorf @F1stzz @Rogue Redcoat @thewatchman @Amedeo @Fraunces @Slegengr @SpacePolice89 @victorycount @Elephant Knight @Dr3w @crusader9576 @dilligan @Barba Ross @Woody Orsat @mrblue @nyugvo6 @Duck @Jack Sassy @_R_R_ @CJCx3_Legos @michgeld @Damon20 @CaptainDarkNStormy @ed4becky @MAP Tec @Horation THANK YEE ALL! While some used multiple votes opportunity to vote for themselves, some succumbed to 'tactical voting', and some flirted with suspicious dark voodoo illegal forces, SPECIAL THANKS goes to @kritch who not only voted for Sloop Windy, but also won the same category. That's admirable and worth highlighting!

Is it a digital build, or is it a real MOC? It's up to you to find out. In any case, it's a mighty fine MOC! Eurobricks member A_Goodman created the scene, and you can see more images in the LEGO Pirates Forum.

Really?? How and where can I find out more about it? The Pearl, 3049 pieces was just around 400pages. New ship is currently pushing over 3300 pieces, so It will be a small miracle if I get instructions in less than 400 pages. Now on another note, have yee considered embarking on the Classic-Pirates blogging adventure? With your writing talent you would be right at home there.
-
I'm actually immersed in a new project which I began in May. A new mighty ship is coming along, and I'm glad this contest is over so I can focus my attention there. At the moment I'm in the process of double-checking the whole design and soon I plan to order the bricks and plates. Then comes the tedious task of making the 400+ pages instructions... I think the first test-build will be in the late October, and if everything goes to plan the the ship will be released in early December. So be sure to check these Pirate waters weekly or at least monthly.

[ENTRY] SIN ISLAND: Keg & Cutlass Inn + Comic book
Marooned Marin replied to Marooned Marin's topic in Pirate MOCs
@hatchpattern Thank yee Sir! We will! @Glowboy The comic is the best way to suck people inside the story and play, and I'm glad you like it! -
@Tayaya Thank you for your kind words, and I will inform young Oscar about your praise. @Mazin Thank you for extensive feedback. I cannot give you all the answers about the colours and decorations, as I'm not original designer, Oscar (the 12-year old) is. He made the ship pretty much alone. I provided help with some technical issues, and renders. That being said, we rushed the whole design as the deadline was approaching. Now, with that behind us, he promised me he will continue to work on it, to make it really seaworthy, and I will delegate all of your suggestions to him and when needed provide assistance. @Rogue Redcoat Well, there are no images of interior because... little Oscar didn't manage to build any till the contest deadline. As for the comic, sadly there's not going to be any about this design. But, I'm have something BIG (full featured Pirate comic book 120pages story) on my to-do list for the 2024 @MstrOfPppts Everything you have written is spot on, and I will inform the young designer about the areas for improvement. Thank yee! @hatchpattern I thank you kindly for your words of praise. @iragm Thank you for keeping your original line of thought and opinions, before realising the age of the designer. I can give little Oscar more ideas for improvement. And yes, you I agree, Sin Island is also for me better because I was involved there much more than in this ship. I'm feeling little tired of ships, so landbased build was quite a refreshment for me. I'm planning to pester both of them (kids) to continue building and improving their designer skills. In any case, I'm glad this contest happened because otherwise I would never discovered potential they have.

[ENTRY] 6281 Pirate's Perilous Pitfall Remake 2023
Marooned Marin replied to Slegengr's topic in Pirate MOCs
Hmm, I noticed that this does happen when I bury the script somewhere deep on computer, for example: C:\localdisk\MOCs\MyIdeas\.....\Github However, when I copy the folder with the github script on the Desktop, it works like a charm Please check where have you made the folder and let me know if this helps. If not, you can send me the file and I can try to run it for you.- 26 replies

Oh I like this! You made the bowsprit look so elegant. Well done, and thank yee for crediting me for the spar attachment.

Darn! I had two newly 'updated' files, one for Rebrickable (with few extra parts on the sloop, where I used new torso) and second for this contest, where it seems I completely forgot to update torso for new renders.

Ahhhh... It's a mudguard! Smart, very smart! Thank yee

[CONTEST] Return of the Classic Pirates - Vote Counting

Piracy is a global issue today so to tackle this we have some in our employ. Tasks are regulating the pirate forum, weeding out the rotten apples and maintaining the Rum supplies. Whole Eurobricks Staff Structure is available HERE
