LEGO Star Wars 2023 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!

I believe the post you are quoting was an attempt at a joke, regardless of its questionable humor. More importantly, I'm very happy if it's true that we're finally getting a Darksaber mold. I can see why they didn't do it back during CW since it probably didn't seem like it would be too relevant long-term, but it feels pretty overdue given its prominence in the Mandalorian. I really hope the set turns out well, but even if it's terrible I'm sure the mold will show up elsewhere later down the line. -
I wouldn't be surprised if it was supposed to release with TotK and got delayed for one reason or another, but it'd be kinda funny if that were the case since the game itself was planned got release last year before getting delayed.

Yeah, it feels like we should be getting something pretty soon. With how "controversial" this summer wave is supposed to be I thought we might have heard something earlier than usual, but I guess that wasn't the case. I'm planning to just keep my expectations low, that way if we get anything cool I can be pleasantly surprised. Even if the rest of the wave ends up being bad, I can at least say that Yavin sounds exciting and the ISP will probably be worth it for the figures. -
It seems like a very odd decision not to release the set the year that Tears of the Kingdom comes out, given that it's all but guaranteed to be one of the biggest (if not the biggest) game of the year as far as sales and hype go. Then again, it's not like it matters too much; Zelda is one of the biggest game franchises in the world and tie-in products will always be in demand whether or not a new game just came out.

While I get where you're coming from I think Lego would have to be absolute fools to not recognize how immensely the market has changed in the last 15 years for both Lego and anime. Generally speaking, both are way more popular with adults than they were even 5 years ago. Anime merch is pretty popular and a Lego theme based on a popular series would not have a hard time selling (assuming the sets are good, of course). If anything, I'd guess the biggest reason why we probably won't see Lego themes based on popular anime is that the licensing might be somewhat complicated, especially for something that would likely sell well, but not as well as other pre-existing themes.

I was thinking that too, at that point why not just release it in May with the other two sets? Maybe they just want to stagger the releases somewhat, but it doesn't make much sense to me. -

Surprised no one has already said this, but I think the main reason we've never gotten a substantial number of generic P2 clones is because the specific legion clones are way more collectable. Generics might be better for army building but having a bunch of different variations around gives people an incentive to buy a set they wouldn't have otherwise. If the 501st pack (the $30 one) and the Republic Tank both had come with generic P2s I suspect collectors would not have been nearly as interested in the latter set since they'd already have had their fill. Also this is just anecdotal but personally I think the clones just look more interesting and fun with colors on their armor. -

I haven't seen many people discuss that possibility but I feel like it makes a lot of sense. I don't see much reason why Lego wouldn’t do another BB set this year when we got one in 2021 and 2022, especially since S2 will be airing for a large part of the year. 1083 is also a similar number of pieces to the Marauder set, so that one could definitely include all of the main characters in their S2 designs. There are absolutely other shows or films this set could be, but BB is both relevant and already a known quantity (unlike Skeleton Crew, which I've also seen suggested). Obviously there's no real evidence that the 1083 piece set is BB, but I'd say it's a reasonable possibility for now. I seriously doubt the Swamp Speeder is BB, but who knows. Crazier things have happened. -
Seems like the Action theme threads have all been quiet as of late. I'm sure we'll have more to talk about once we get to see the summer sets, so hopefully that happens sooner rather than later. Personally I am still hoping to get the Macaque mech and Heavenly Realms from last year, but I don't know how likely that is with the new Ninjago City expansion coming up. I kind of hope none of the summer Monkie Kid sets interest me, but knowing this theme at least one is going to be among the best sets of the whole year.

I like the look of the Snub Fighter, but as others have said it seems slightly too expensive. Another minifigure would've helped, though I don't need another Mando so I guess it doesn't matter too much (since he's probably who would've been in there). Also, is anyone else reminded of this Space Police III set? It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Snub Fighter in the show, and the set definitely has the same vibe. Probably just because of the positioning of the little wings on the side, but it's still a funny coincidence (unless one of the ship designers for the show is a big Lego fan). -

If we're being real here 98% of parents aren't even going to know the difference, but I agree with your point. Lego would be cannibalizing their own sales if they put out another 501st set this year. -
I think the biggest thing that might keep it from returning is just that Lego has a lot more options now when it comes to video game themes. There are only so many designers to go around and so much shelf space to be filled, so it may end up being that Lego drops Overwatch because they believe other video game themes will perform better. With Minecraft, Sonic, Mario, and potentially a number of other Nintendo series they may not be wrong either; Overwatch is still popular, but I don't know that it appeals to kids as much as any of those other themes do.
-
I'll be curious to see if it makes a comeback. I could see Lego dropping it even after Microsoft has acquired Activision-Blizzard since there's just so much bad press around them. It also doesn't help that the sets never seemed like they were incredibly popular either, though that's just anecdotal so I could be mistaken there. The game (and theme) clearly has some fans though and did make for some cool sets, so I wouldn't mind seeing it return (preferably once the merger is done).

5 figs would be great but I'd be quite surprised if we get that many (unless some are battle droids). We have to keep in mind that this would almost certainly have been cheaper without recent inflation, and in that context even 4 figs seems like a stretch to me. It's not impossible but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if it's only got 3. -
System-scale typically refers to sets being minifigure-scale, since those sets are considered regular "system" (meaning brick) sets. Constraction and Technic are other categories Lego makes. In this case it's a little weird though, since the buildable figures are mostly brick built, but more in the vein of constraction stuff like Bionicle (albeit not as cool, in my opinion). Edit: I should probably also clarify that a more accurate term for the original poster to use might have been "minifigure-scale" since system doesn't have an inherent scale; microscale and minifigure-scale sets are both typically considered system.

Was just looking over the upcoming set list kindly put together by @Scarilian and noticed that I completely missed the ridiculous ppp on the Captain Marvel 2 set (whenever it was that we found out about that). It must have like 10 minifigures, right? Even with a bunch of big parts, 420 pieces for $90 is downright absurd.

Yeah, I'd definitely count that as a battlepack too. You can't tell me anyone bought that for any reason other than the Dark Troopers. -

Those probably wouldn't sell terribly, but mechs featuring much more popular characters are still gonna sell better just by virtue of having Darth Vader and Boba Fett. -
Day 1 purchase. It shall make a fine addition to my shrine.

In regards to your latter point, I imagine they are more referring to the stories that go along with each theme. Pretty much every in-house theme has some kind of plot to go along with it, so adding more backstory for characters isn't super complicated. I don't know what they'd do for something like Monster Fighters or Galaxy Squad where the plot is very barebones and there isn't any notable accompanying media, but they don't really make series like that anymore so maybe it's a moot point. Even Hidden Side, which felt much more classic, still had some media to go along with it. Personally I appreciate the commitment to having more representation, but given that the majority of Lego's themes are licensed now it kinda seems like it's out of their hands anyway.

I guess I can see why they would opt for a more expensive Sail Barge like you suggested, but I really do not agree with the sentiment that the Sail Barge is more iconic than the Razorcrest. It's probably the single most iconic new Star Wars ship since the original trilogy, and I'd expect the layperson is more familiar with the RC than the Sail Barge. That doesn't necessarily matter since the average person isn't buying a $600+ Lego anyway, but to an extent Lego does try to go with what's popular, even with stuff like UCS. I think the fact that we still haven't gotten a UCS Sail Barge is a fairly good indicator that it's not among the most popular Star Wars ships. The scene it's in definitely is, but that doesn't make it inherently popular. The more I've thought about it the more I expect that the $650 set is going to be another Death Star, though I don't have a horse in the race since I'd never be able to afford the thing, whatever it is. It just seems like the kind of thing that Lego would want to have out since they know it'll sell, and unless it's completely redesigned it'll be less work to make too. -

I said this a few days ago, but I really just don't think Lego could get away with making the Sail Barge $650. Even if the model doesn't resemble the survey version whatsoever, I just don't think it makes much sense. It's certainly iconic, but not iconic to the point that a lot of people would spend $650 on it. More importantly, there are other candidates that would most likely sell better. My bet would be on a new minifig scale Death Star or Ewok Village. @Retro Brick Reviews already made a great case for the latter, and I think the Death Star speaks for itself. It's gonna happen again sooner or later. -

While I don't think it's entirely out of the question, I seriously doubt Yavin will ever be made as an MBS. It's iconic, but I don't think it's that iconic. It being a larger playset seems perfect for it since they'll be able to recreate the most iconic elements of it without needing to devote a ton of pieces to the outside (which would no doubt drive up the price a ton). I could be totally off base (pun not intended), but Yavin just doesn't strike me as something that would sell really well an as MBS, and I don't think it needs to be that big to be done justice either. -
Just wanted to add something I haven't seen mentioned yet in regards to potential RoP sets being discussed. When the Voltron set released, I distinctly remember being excited by the press release mentioning Legendary Defender, the reboot that was running when that set released. Despite being name dropped in the description, we never saw anything related to it get made (and to be clear, the set we got is based specifically on the original show). Obviously this isn't exactly the same since Voltron was an Ideas set and LotR isn't, and the thing I'm talking about was a few years ago now, but there is at least some precedent for Lego referring to other ongoing series that they don't plan on releasing sets for.
