[MOC] The Dragon of the Black Seas (small hull boat)
Cousarmy0001 replied to Legostein's topic in Pirate MOCs
As one who has about 50 of these boats, I'm always happy to see when somebody does something creative with them that doesn't look ridiculous. And you have. Well done! -
Are you SURE you want to retrieve that "treasure"?
-
@kurigan You're lucky it arrived at all! The post office where I live loses probably 20% of my mail.
-
I'm inclined to agree. Following the problems I had with the masts on my Endeavor copy, I'm always on the lookout for other ideas for masts.
-
Yes... that...
-
I'd like to echo @kurigan regarding the removable lower hull. It's a terrific feature that adds a lot to the boat. When looking to tile the bottom, you might want to get some of the smaller slope pieces involved as well- if they're available in that color, anyway, and for a non-ridiculous price. His advice on the prow is good, but I feel I should mention that from a builder standpoint I rather like it just the way it is now. The way you brought it all together with the pole and the holders is really great, and as a builder I like to see how clever things are done. I'm not saying that Kurigan is wrong, mind you. I'm saying I also like how it is now :-) Are the masts made from Technic axles?
-
The only suggestion I have is that you tile the hull. Otherwise, this looks absolutely terrific. You've even impressed Kurigan, who is the undisputed master of this type of MOC! Well, done, sir.

[WIP] The Seven Seas Barracuda (East Indiaman Galleon)
Cousarmy0001 replied to cehnot's topic in Pirate MOCs
She looks tough! Very well done. 16 guns puts her just barely into the upper range of MOC firepower, but the hull itself looks solid as can be. Her AP may not be the highest, but her HP looks like she'll take all day to put down :-) -
This is such a high quality, faithful recreation of the original. There's a considerable upgrade to detail in this, but it retains the classic elements and in appropriate proportions. I like that the mast has been moved, and the ladders positioned so they can be used from the ground level as well as the upper floor.

[MOC & Instructions] Renegade Runner & Imperial Flagship ~ Remake
Cousarmy0001 replied to Raziel-117's topic in Pirate MOCs
Well, since it's already been bumped, I might as well chime in. I'm sorry that I missed this the first time around. I've always liked the old Imperial flagship, underpowered though it was, so I generally like seeing what others make of her (some day I might actually own one of my own, too!). I have to say I like the Runner better, though. It's a bit understated, and doesn't make her disproportionately tall. The Imperial flagship makes it a bit tall for my liking, but Lego tends to do that with their Imperial ships, so while I give it points off for lack of realism, those points are immediately recouped (perhaps more than recouped) by the classic Lego feel your redesign gives. Altogether and individually high quality work on both. -
Older Pirate ship moc, with instructions, partlist, build as we go.
Cousarmy0001 replied to taratears's topic in LEGO Pirates
Perhaps you mean one of these two? They're both a bit old as threads go, but CGH is one of the best. You can't go wrong by emulating him. -
[MOC] USS Poseidon - Minifig Scale First Rate Ship of the Line

Maybe enough pirate 5th and 6th rates to challenge your 1st rate should be your next project -
[MOC] "Fer Maiden" - 36 Gun Privateer Frigate

She looks great! By chance could we get some shots of the cabin? -
[LDD] "Belisarius" Skeleton Pirate Ghost Ship
Cousarmy0001 replied to Delusion Brick's topic in Pirate MOCs
A bit of a bump, but I seem to have missed this. I think the glow in the dark part is brilliant. Awesome feature! -
Definitely an improvement, IMO! I'm interested to see how the finished product looks. Will you be extending the grey part of the hull further aft?

General MOC-Discussion, WIP-Help, and Teaser Thread
Cousarmy0001 replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in LEGO Pirates
I kind of still am calling you out, though. The quote from you on my comment didn't update and still says "pickle gun". I assumed you wrote it that way intentionally. Update on that project, I Bricklinked the masts the other day (as of the image posting, I only had one). Then last night I was looking for some parts in my closet, and found three complete masts in a container. WITH SPARS AND SAILS. How on Earth did I lose track of those? Strictly speaking, all I'm waiting for now are the barrels for the swivel guns. EDIT 1: This ship kind of means a lot, though. I finished my last large ship 8 years ago. After that, my ex-wife kept me broke until our divorce, after which I had a mountain of debt accrued before and during the divorce to deal with while attending school. Sorry to bring up personal stuff, but it pertains to this MOC in that it's the first large ship I've been able to afford in 8 years. I've finally attained some measure of financial stability, and can occasionally afford to do a project now, instead of building endless designs in LDD and then dreaming about them. This ship represents how far I've come in my life since I completed Thunderchild. And it feels pretty good not only to build it, but for my football obsessed six year old son to think it's so cool that he asked if it could be his. My four year old daughter is far more into Legos than him, but she prefers the girlier themes. Despite this, she also saw the new ship, and asked for one of her own. Which gives me the excuse to start a medium sized build! One of these days, I might actually run out of hulls! EDIT 2: I got some dowels to put in Endeavor's masts. They're not perfect, but at least they don't fall over by themselves anymore, and tip at weird angles when they aren't falling over. Each one is now two rigid sections, and it's MUCH better. I hate the ship almost half as much now. Thank you very very much for the tip, @kurigan.- 315 replies

You could try a brick built hull. Check out some of Kurigan's work to see what's possible there. It's quite good.
-
You're not going to try your hand at a tapered hull? Other than that, I'd say you're off to a pretty good start. The color scheme looks nice, and the guns are well spaced. I would suggest maybe putting some ladders in the sides, but other than this this looks great.

Nope, you guessed what I meant right. Now that you said it I remember you saying it before. I wish I'd asked sooner, as I was just at Hobby Lobby today. And yeah, Puckle gun. I don't know if anybody else has made one (I don't remember seeing one, anyway), but I came up with this after watching the Forgotten Weapons video on them and seeing what they actually looked like. I thought it would be pretty effective against small boats, and could probably do a nice job poking holes in sails. Especially if they develop incendiary rounds This is on my current large project (just 9 years after laying down the keel of my last large ship project), which will be complete after the parts for the masts arrive. It's about the same size as Thunderchild, with the same number of guns, but with a smaller cabin, slightly different lines, and the main deck is not removable. It's also a bit cheaper, which is nice.- 315 replies

@kurigan what do you use to stabilize those round 1x1s? I've asked you before, but I can't remember the answer. I think you know the project I'm asking about. Also, what on Earth could this be?- 315 replies

I'm interested!

Any updates on this? I can't wait to see how this one turns out, Count.

This is the only way I would ever consider using brickbuilt sails.
-
I would add that getting new pirate sets, even if I don't like the set, means more minifig types being available. And considering how Lego has stepped up their minifig efforts over the years, I'd be stoked for a GOOD bluecoat redesign as I really didn't care for the 2015 ones. The half dozen or so that I got I wound up making into mercenaries or militia. I haven't quite decided which, but I'm inclined to go with mercenaries as they're currently aboard my armed merchantman.
