1990s Lego Space was best - how to revive Lego Space
danth replied to Canondorf's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Absolutely. And I'm a fan of all of them. I think Ice Planet needs some love especially. Even when it comes to Classic Space, I'd rather see a trans green/gray or trans blue/white throwback set now than another trans yellow/blue/gray set. -
1990s Lego Space was best - how to revive Lego Space
danth replied to Canondorf's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Does any of that even matter? Look at Star Wars. People just buy the same designs, in the same colors, year after year after year. People don't want new, they want what they want, again and again forever. I know what the next argument is going to be: Star Wars is different because it's SO popular. But it's not different. It's the same. People in every fandom want the same stuff they wanted before. Star Wars fans want more Star Wars, Harry Potter fans want more Harry Potter, and Classic Space fans want more trans yellow, blue & gray spaceships forever. City is the same. It's fire trucks and police cars again and again. And the fire trucks are still red, the police cars are still mostly white. I mean, I definitely get tired of the same ol' same ol', and cycling colors to keep things fresh is fine. Even Classic Space cycled colors in the 80s before the single-color-scheme themes starting with Futuron. Sometimes they had completely different colored sets in the same year -- 1986 is a good example -- giving variety such that there's not enough of any single color scheme to become stale. But even what's old is new again. Futuron, Exploriens, and SP3 all repeated the same color scheme because it's so good. Can't people just say something is the best without being "corrected"? It's obviously their opinion; stating it like they don't know it is negative, weird, and exasperating. -
The realism aspect is for sure part of it, but isn't that indelibly linked to being designed more for adults? Do kids care about realism? I feel like they're being careful to not turn off adult collectors. But I have unpopular opinions on this. I think there are themes that are secretly aimed more at adults than kids. It's growing on me. The good thing is that trans black it doesn't feel like a city windshield color. And it's prettier than the old trans brown. I'm okay with how dark the trans black windscreens are, but agree that the website/box pics are deceptive. I think they make some colors lighter and other colors darker. Trans light blue in particular always looks darker in box/website pics IMO. Probably because they know regular trans blue would look cooler! Forgot to say...I'm totally fine with making windscreens lighter for marketing pics if that's what it takes to get darker colored windscreens. If Lego thinks it's that important to show off the pilots/drivers, I'd prefer them lightening the canopies in pics vs using lighter actual parts. I much prefer trans green, red, and blue to trans light green, pink, and light blue. Personally I think it's a shame that so much focus is on the minifigures vs the actual build. I want to see a big, beautiful, vibrant windscreen on my vehicles. If I want to see inside, I'll open the canopy/door/whatever. I don't think a design like this would even work with trans clear canopies:
-
Yes! I recently heard someone call Lego "cowardly" in their reluctance to use more colorful canopies, and I agree. However they definitely use colored canopies in Friends, Ninjago, and Monkie Kid. So that makes me wonder if Lego thinks only girls/women and little kids like colors, but adult men do not, and if 2024 City Space is really targeted (at least in part) towards older teenage boys and adult men.

Is It Possible To Reintroduce Old Sets?
danth replied to SpacePolice89's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Can we get a mod/admin to fix this? A discussion forum really shouldn't be censoring opinions like this. -
It's so unreal to me that they decided to get rid of trans neon orange and green while these were in the pipeline. What a colossal cock up. And now the three best figures don't have visors.
-
Yeah, but that's actually a valid argument. I even almost made that argument. But those sets obviously don't scratch the itch that @SpacePolice89 has, so we should maybe not tell him his feelings are wrong. For me, the 2024 Space sets are a big consolation. Not exactly what I wanted, but still pretty cool. If the City sets had trans-purple canopies like the Friends sets, it would basically have been the Second Coming for me. Man, that would have been so cool! Plus I think we all have to admit, it's pretty funny that the much touted YEAR OF SPACE doesn't have an actual retro Space themed set other than the baby GWP.
-
Policing emotions now? The Lion Knights Castle was also two years ago and there's already a follow up set. You know this, so it's kinda like you're just arguing in bad faith to purposely antagonize @SpacePolice89. It's obvious that the upset is not about something else existing, its about Space not getting the same follow up as Castle or Pirates.
-
Yeah it definitely has the least elements of 80s/90s space. I mean it's not in space. No colored windscreens, no backpack/airtanks. Doesn't mean it wasn't cool. Doesn't mean it wasn't sci-fi. Doesn't mean it didn't have a walker and a space ship. Also the jetpack polybag had the classic jetpack armor piece. But it doesn't feel much like Space to me. What's funny is that Alien Conquest could have totally been set within the City theme. It's more City than 2024 City Space because it actually takes place on earth. And yet Space fans get lambasted on this forum for dare saying Alien Conquest felt more like a City theme. Well...looks like Lego agrees with us since the 2024 Space sets are in City! But then we also get lambasted for wishing for a non-City space theme. "SpAcE FaNs aRe ImPoSsIbLe To pLeAsE"

I very intentionally did not say those words actually. I don't want to get swatted by the opinion police. More like: you either have all the elements that the first 20 years of Space had, or you don't. The more you have, the more it feels like Space to me.
-
I can't speak for everyone, but for me, it's not that hard to make something feel like Space. You just need "colored" windscreens, like trans purple for example (but not trans light blue which is city, or black/brown), some sort of minifig with a helmet and airtank/backpack, a space setting that isn't obviously the Solar system, and spaceships/bases/walkers etc. These are things that all Space sets had from 1978 to 1998. Nobody should act surprised that the essential elements of Space sets for the first 20 years of Space are what makes a set feel like a Space set. To act like that's some kind of impossibly high bar is just, well, weird. I'm not saying you're doing that, but plenty of people do.

As someone who likes big robots...it's way better than the actual set!
-
I like the ginormous angled tail fins and the plentiful windowing.

On the other hand, I've been told that I should be happy as a Space fan to accept Ninjago helicopters since they're basically all "sci fi zoomies". Wondering why interstellar space ships sets with aliens are released under City is valid. Telling space fans they're impossible to please is a played out trope. It's basically a gaslighting campaign at this point.

ASLUME (formerly Batman (DC Superheroes) 2024 - Rumors & Discussion)
danth replied to Clone OPatra's topic in LEGO Licensed
Is this what they mean by "sticker shock"? I have to imagine that Lego assumes anyone buying this is a Batman fan first and a Lego fan tenth, and won't have the righteous hatred of stickers that seasoned Lego fans develop. Or that they're collectors who won't bother to open the box. -
LEGO Sci-Fi Ongoing - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion
danth replied to Lyichir's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
I'm not sure there is any proof of it not selling. "Must not have sold well" is such a easy thing to say without any thought or actual knowledge that I don't trust it any more, even when a designer supposedly says it. How poorly could have Alien Conquest really sold if Lego released Galaxy Squad soon after, with some of the alien designs looking similar to the leaked canceled Alien Conquest sets? -
The Love for Printed Pieces Thread/Sticker Resentment Thread
danth replied to danth's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of totally sticker free sets that are out there lately. For instance the Interstellar Spaceship and the midi-scale Millennium Falcon from this year. And of course the fire sets @TeriXeri mentioned above. Correct me if I'm wrong but: Sonic Sets are sticker free (except for the Ideas set) Animal Crossing sets are sticker free All 4+ and 5+ sets are sticker free (this year at least)- 183 replies

https://ideas.lego.com/challenges/7c37425a-7cc4-4188-b3bf-a43316396101?query=&sort=top#global-search-app The winners of the Explore The Cosmos challenge have been announced. Apparently these might be turned into insider rewards sets? I didn't know about this contest at all so didn't submit or vote. -

I just built the Micro Rocket set. It's pretty great. Other than stickers, I have no complaints. All builds are super cute and fun. I tried to put on the first small sticker with just my fingers and oof, big mistake. They're so small and my thumbs are too big...so I switched to using a brick separator after that. And then I got to the long sticker. Static cling made it bend and stick to the tile before I got it into position. Arg! But anyway. At least the parts are nice. Love the new parts in trans yellow. I think keeping the baby face prints would have been funnier, but I get what they're going for with the classic smiley. -
I just realized the Rover leaked on the last day of Febrovery. But only because it's leap year. Also, this is the first official Lego rover that reminds me of a Febrovery rover, thanks to the awesome colors and fantastic shape.

It's absolutely amazing. Wow. Minidoll fans always getting the sets I want. 😠4 of those quarter domes in a $35 set is surprising in a good way. Also surprised to see an alien astronaut!

TLG Licensed Merchandise Concept Ideas Survey

I tried, but as the questions became more meaningless to me, I just couldn't continue.
