Fantasy Pirates: A LEGO World Builder Project
Lego David replied to Lego David's topic in LEGO Pirates
We have designed another one of the main characters in our theme, Princess Hadriana. Any feedback or comments are highly appreciated. -
It's totally fine to like one more than the other, (I myself like Kingdoms more than Castle 13') but the point I'm making is that both Kingdoms and Castle 13' are very similar, with the exception of the 2011 Kingdoms wave, which was remarkably different from any other Castle line we ever got during that era.

I am not exactly sure, Brick Fanatics has more info on that: https://www.brickfanatics.com/lego-ideas-baba-yaga-project-achieves-support-in-just-one-day/ -
Those specific examples were part of the 2011 wave of Kingdoms, which was more of an oddity than what a LEGO Castle theme usually does. (the Joust 10223 set was a LEGO.com exclusive set if I recall correctly). The 2013 Castle sets were almost identical to the 2010 Kingdoms sets.

The Monkie Kid Lion Guardian sounds very interesting, I assume it would be something similar to the Legend Beasts from Chima. The Legendary Flower Fruit Mountain sounds very promising. I assume it's gonna be a Mountain Temple build of sorts, which is something I've been wanting from this line ever since the first rumors started coming out. If it doesn't turn out to be that, I'll be very disappointed. The rest of the leaked set names sound like they are gonna be just more vehicles, so I'm not very interested in those.

The Baba Yaga project, based off Russian Folklore, has achieved 10.000 supporters in a new record time of less than 24 hours. -

The ship has a large Bionicle figurehead on the bowsprit, and the crew is a combination between Pirates, Classic Spacemen, and Bionicle characters. -

I absolutely agree, I think the 2016 sets were an obvious upgrade from 2015. I don't get why so many Bionicle fans were disappointed with those... Was it because of the slightly different aesthetic compared to 2015? That change didn't bother me at all personally. -

Well, if we make the 90th anniversary set based on only one theme, inevitably a lot of people are gonna be disappointed. So why not just combine all the top 3 highest voted themes into one set? -

I can echo your sentiment about the articulation on the MOC I shared, but I feel like if LEGO is gonna make a set like that, they are probably gonna market it as a "display piece" like most of their current large 18+ sets. So if that were the case, there would be more focus on the looks and less focus on the articulation. I mean, the first wave of Western sets didn't even include Native Americans... it was just the Cowboys, Bandits, and Cavalry. The Indians wouldn't come until the second year of LEGO Western, in 1997. If LEGO were to theoretically make a Western set as the 90th anniversary set, they probably would have done something like a Fort Legoredo remake, which didn't include any Indians at all. So technically speaking, they could get away with making a new Western set while still staying away from inaccurate Native American depictions. -

To be honest, I don't really like that particular style. I far prefer the one I posted, which is about the same size as the original Toa Mata sets, except system-built. On top of that, having brickbuilt masks just wouldn't work for me... Having special mask elements has always been part of Bionicle's appeal IMO. This a one-off set we're talking about here. If it's a tribute to the original line and the original line's story, I see no reason why Bionicle fans wouldn't want it. Why does everyone dislike the 2016 Bionicle sets? I personally think they are on par with the 2015 ones, if not better. The fact that they added more piston detailing and such doesn't really bother me personally. -

If Bionicle were to be chosen, here is what I would like a System-based Bionicle tribute set to look like: If whatever LEGO will end up producing will look like that, I think most of the Bionicle community will be more than satisfied, even if it's made from system. It would only require bringing back one single mask mold, which technically speaking shouldn't be that big of a deal for a special 18+ set aimed at collectors. On top of that, a set like this could potentially be of interest to a few casual AFOLs, too! -

Sadly, Castle is probably gonna be excluded from that list, as it didn't make it to the top 3 (because of the unfair subthemes distribution, obviously). Christian Faber never said anywhere that he wants to buy the Bionicle IP, and even if he wanted to, an IP can cost up to millions of dollars (depending on how much that IP made during it's lifetime), so logistically speaking, I don't think a single independent person like Faber could buy an entire IP from a multi-billion dollar toy company. If LEGO were interested in selling the Bionicle IP (which I very much doubt) they would probably sell it to another toy company like Hasbro, or perhaps a movie studio that is interested in making movies based off the Bionicle story (both of them incredibly unlikely). As for Faber and his cryptic "Biovival" project, whatever he is doing will probably just be an independent project done with the permission from LEGO, without necessarily having to purchase the Bionicle IP (which I already said, is pretty much impossible logistically speaking). -

I don't think Exo-Force is old enough to be counted in a poll like this. The general rule seens to be that only "vintage" lines that are at least 20 years or older can be counted, and Exo-Force came out in 2006, which is not old enough for that. -

Tahu Mata is easily the most recognizable of the Toa Mata, and the Tahu's Mask (the Kanohi Hau) is often used as a symbol to Bionicle as a whole. Realistically speaking, I don't think remaking any other Toa Mata with the exception of Tahu would be viable. -

Well, that's actually a very good point! LEGO could very easily remake one of those Technic Rahi sets, without the need of bringing back old molds. On top of that, the Rahi are quite popular in the Bionicle community, so I think if LEGO did that, the vast majority of the community will be pleased! The problem with those sets, though, is that they aren't nearly as recognizable as the Toa Mata heroes, and therefore may not sell nearly as well... And I assume LEGO is already planning on remaking Tahu if Bionicle wins, because that's the set that represented the theme in the poll. -

No, there were several themes available for vote that were released after 2000. Arctic, Studios, and Alpha Team all came out during that era. -

They could have also split Adventures into different subthemes (Egypt, Jungle, Dino Island, Orient Expedition) but they chose not to, and now Adventurers is single theme available for vote. So saying that the way the vote was setup was in order to "favor" Bionicle isn't a valid assumption. Especially when you consider the fact that Bionicle got the worst representative picture in the poll, when it should have gotten a box art scan, like all of the other themes in the poll. If Bionicle does win, I can guarantee it's gonna be a System Bionicle set. Best case scenario, we get a re-issue of an old Bionicle Mask piece, but that would be it. Most of the Bionicle piece molds are already long retired. -
Great MOC! A very unique bug design, and I particularly like how you made that crossbow! Yes it is. It came in the set 8704 Sir Adric.

The Bionicle community has been wanting a Bionicle anniversary set for years now. They even got a Bionicle LEGO Ideas project to 10k supporters, but it got denied. No wonder everyone is voting for Bionicle in this poll now, since they have another chance of getting that set they've always wanted. On top of that, a lot of Bionicle fans still continue as general FOLs today, so claiming that those fans won't buy the set is a bit of a bold claim. LEGO still reserves the authority to choose which set they will make from the top 3 most voted themes, so even if Bionicle will end up on the number 1 place, there is no guarantee they will choose it. In fact, the chances of TLG choosing Bionicle are very slim, because it would require them to bring back discontinued molds that they no longer have. I too am sorry that Adventurers didn't make it, but what can you do? The fanbase for that theme clearly wasn't as big as the other themes on the list. -

That may be a bit exaggerated, but still not far from the truth. -
I couldn't agree more. They really seem to be pushing the "adult market" with stuff like the 18+ line of sets, but it seems to me that they do that without properly understanding what people would actually want to see as 18+ sets. On top of that, even when they do polls asking people what they want (such as the LEGO 90th anniversary poll) they still screw things up with a lot of stupid decisions, like splitting Classic themes into subthemes, and thus preventing them from winning.

As someone who is part of the Bionicle community, I can explain exactly why most Bionicle fans voted for Bionicle and nothing else: Because Bionicle appeals to a much younger demographic than most of the other themes on the list (people between 18-30 years old), so the people voting for Bionicle wouldn't have had any other choices from their generation to vote for. If say, something like Knight's Kingdom II or Exo-Force would have been included (both lines that were out at the same time as Bionicle) I can assure you that a lot of Bionicle fans would have likely voted for those as well. Bionicle fans grew up in the 2000's, and Bionicle is the only theme available in the poll that they have a personal connection to. Unlike most of the older AFOLs who voted in the poll, they never grew up with any of those "Classic" lines, so therefore they have no reason to vote for any of them. -

We have our first look at the results of the 90th anniversary poll so far! It seems like Bionicle, Classic Space, and Pirates are the three main contenders.
