  1. P.S. another small but interesting fact. Pirates did NOT made their victims walk the plank. Like I mentioned. Pirates usually tried to avoid killing people, they wanted to just scare them and made them surrender, leaving everybody alive. Bartholomew Roberts for example, did one single person in his whole life walk the plank. For all other pirates I mentioned there are no records or mentioned walking down the plank at all. That practice appeared also more in Novels in the 19th century.
  2. Thanks. And if anybody have or found a strange pirate flag he want to share, show it. It looks like every pirate wanted to be creative and be recognized by their own flag. I agree that Quelch Flag is really weird
  3. I know many people, books (novels) and articles writes a lot of stuff. But they are what they are novels, fairy tales and all that. The book about piracy 1724 by Charles Johnson started the wrong romantic approach. It was a novel full of fiction to sell well. It fast became a "historical" book for some, but in the end it is what it is, a novel. Especially in the entertainment industry false and romantic believes are way more fascinating but they don't show any truth. So if you want to read real history, don't try to read Wikipedia or articles from people that never studied history or anything like that. There is a very good example what a single book can do, and you all can Google and read about this fairy tale, it's the same with pirates and flags why so many people have simply no clue, even if you can go to a library and read by yourself... But laziness is normal today... In Germany a lot of Germans believe that German almost became the language in the US... total nonsense but for real, they also have a "book" proven it. But it is like with the pirates. That novel written that stuff came in 1847 from Franz von Löhers, there he claims that there was a poll about the language to use when the US won their independence, and English won just by one vote of a German called Muhlenberg... Well that story is... nonsense as there hasn't been any poll or anything like that about what language the US should use, as there wasn't a question about that being a former English Colony. Until today there is no DE JURE language of the US. It is just DE FACTO English. Some states though did it now to make English DE JURE as the language to use. But in the United States as a whole it is not needed and never done. This vote never happened. But this legend was so good for the Nazis in the second world war, they made it famous in Germany with a bunch of Germans walking around and really believing that? Instead of trying to read real history. In the University or College o e of the first things you learn is what kind of book, or articles and stuff are real history and what not. Novels are definitely never history books! As Wikipedia too, you will fail with every work using one of that as historical reference. But even the Germans (actually the father of my wife) still believes why he wants, as he is German and they are the best in everything anyway... just an example. You can read real history or believe what non historical references tell you. It's up to you I don't care. But just an good example of how mixed up history can be by using novels and other non historical references... and to the americans: it's real a lot of Germans here at the family of my wife really believe that! For me... I also love Pirates of The Caribbean movie and BSB is one of my favourites of all time I Lego... a big pirate ship. Just because history is one side of it, I still love the Hollywood Romantic Version of it! Because it's way more exciting (probably the reason for that development) P.S. for me and my son: playing realistic is really boring Offtopic: For any who wants to read about that stuff just Google "Muhlenberg Legend" for more information. You would not believe how many people in Germany thinks that's real... For the lazy: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhlenberg_legend I have read it and it's correct... But let's get back to topic, historical funny pirate flags ?
  4. Some more pirate flags from the Golden Age: The mentioned Edward Teach aka Blackbeard had this flag, already shown you now in better quality: The elegant and probably most successfull pirate Bartholomew Roberts: Captain Walter Kennedy: image hosting Captain Christopher Moody: image hosting Captain John Quelch... his looked really weird, today I would say it looks like an Alien ? image hosting And the famous flag Lego and Hollywood is using, he was ONLY the second pirate to use this kind of flag: Edward England also died in 1721 (In Madagascar alone and poor) and been three years a pirate captain (1717 to 1720). It sound a short time but not many pirates lived up more than that... Some had captains also changed the flag after a while... That's one of my favourites
  5. Sorry to correct you none of that ever happened like that RED was the common pirate flag for a long time. The attack never came by what flag they shown, it was always their country flag waving on pirate ships to not being identified as that by warships. Here are some facts but as you are too lazy to read real history books with evidence showing, translate it for yourself. It's not my mission to teach anybody. You can also believe that the earth is flat if you want to. Darnok can also translate that for you. But like I said you can believe whatever you want. I shown you just the facts how it was Hm could work too. Or that "Enterhaken" stuff what is holding the cargo net at Brickbeard's Bounty...?
  6. Thanks appreciate that. If someone have an idea how to imitate those "ninja stars" for pirates stuff would be cool, I mean in Lego of course ?
  7. Hi all... Again and again I see how many people think the flag of the Brickbeard's Bounty is looking childish unrealistic... But the opposite is the case! The famous jolly Roger was only one flag not more often used than other pirates flags, just became famous because of the entertainment industry. As I studied and am studying history all my life as it is a big passion if mine. Pirates had even more childish or strange flags than most of you can imagine... I took some pictures of my history books for y'all, with some informations many of you maybe did not know... Most pirate flags was... RED! Exactly. Black came in a short period in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Pirates. The name "Jolly Roger" came from French and meant: Joli Rouge (beautiful red!) Yes Jolly Roger is a red flag in original, and the most common pirate flag was this, looks like y'all hated Brickbeards Flag just in red: But if some think that is strange or childish... look what kind of pirate flags really was shown during the Golden Age: The more real flags you search in history books, the more you realise... childish crazy flags was the normal thing, with that what you all know as Jolly Roger, was just use by a few. So by flags... The more childish crazy or whatever it looks like, that is realistic! So in this case Brickbeard's Flag is way more realistic than any other Lego Pirate Flags....! But mostly the pirates went to represent their countries flag. As most pirates has been British, the had the English, later British Flag on, just revealing the pirate flag before the attack came. The goal was to come close to the other ship. Ok, the next thing probably most of you already knew. Pirates never had big ships, big guns and never fought or won against war ships (not alone... together with other nations warships yes but then they was already equipped by the official navy). The reason why pirates never had big ships, big canons and even pistols been rare is quite simple. Big canons or big ships has been just way too expensive and really hard to buy if you was a regular guy, for a pirate it was really hard. Just a handful of cannons had been taken from destroyed warships after wars between nations. But that was a handful of cannons for the pirates in hundred of years. But the most important thing is they did not even want to have that. Big cannons makes you slower, need expensive cannon balls, and destroys the other ships. And that's what pirates always tried to avoid. They want to rob the trade ships not sunk them, cause then all the gold or whatever they carry is lost forever, in that times. Did you know that pirates captain's been elected and had only total command during battles? Did you know that kids and women was not allowed on pirate ships (As some exceptions by some rare lady pirates but that been historical exceptions).... so a child on board like Will in the story of the Golden Medaillion... never been like that. The captain being a dictator commanding his Crew also off the ship? Impossible. But now we come to the battles... As like you already know pirates had small ships without cannons, you know how they made their battles? That is the most interesting part in my opinion. They went with their homeland flag as close as they could get to the trade ship. Then? Revealing the pirate flag they screamed, after crazy all kind of things to just scare the others... and then it was two possible ways: The Crew of the trade ship immediately surrenders, nobody will be harmed, nobody will be injured or killed. The pirates will take the goods and go away. Often people who was treated bad on ships just moved on with the pirates. Doctors and stuff being taken if needed. If a ship wanted to fight off the pirates.... Then it get really bad! The small cannons was just there to destroy the sails of the trade ships, then they had to enter it. They had some real scary tactics. They thrown with their small cannons often something like ninja stars, don't know the English name, here is a picture from one of the books: That was a real scary weapon. The whole deck was full of that, and even if you had shoes on you got seriously injured by stepping on it. The pirates practiced to fight not stepping on that. Even the trade ships had mostly been bigger than pirate ships. But the decision of fight or not, was also a decision of life or death. If a ship decided to fight, the pirates left No survivors! That was a strict rule to motivate future ships to give all goods surrendering immediately and surviving without harm. So 99% of all pirate routes had been like that, the people just immediately surrender to not get killed. It worked. Because some trade ships had cannons and could fight, it wasn't sure that the pirates would win every battle against trade ships, so it was a win win for both sides to surrender... How did the pirates stop... well I read about a lot of famous pirates. Edward Teach "Blackbeard", he put some fired cigars and other stuff in his hairs before a attack... like you heard, being or looking scary was more important than anything else... his end? An English Warship in 1718 (he was aged 38) One of the most successful pirates in history: Bartholomew Roberts, in various books it says he attacked between 300 and 400 ships successfully. His End... an English Warship... The very few female pirate captains... Anne Bonny and Mary Read? You know already the End came in 1721. Other famous pirates just been taken to duty for the navy or government and guess what, started to fight piracy! Like Henry Morgan, a classical pirate against Spanish trade ships he became Vice Gouvernor of Jamaica for the British and was a hardliner then against piracy. (I think everybody knows about Sir Francis Drake so I let him out as he was way before that golden age) That Golden Age was a real short period. It "started" in the beginning of the 18th century (1700) being already over between 1720 and 1725. The British realised piracy harms their trade and as sometime the trade really was struck and almost stopped, the British end that golden age very quick. By the way also an interesting fact. Do you think the big warships fired to the pirates? The real big warships did not waste expensive cannon balls for that, they often just rammed them. Smaller Warships had to fight them but also that being a problem and the end for most pirate ships that could not flew quick enough. I know in an age where Lego is making big pirate ships (ok in 1980s and 90s) and Pirates of the Caribbean showing big pirate ships fighting British war ships too... most of that is more unrealistic than it's ever get. The romantic approach of Pirates simply never been. But that was just pirates in the Caribbean in the Golden Age, most pirates was really different. Line the Islamic pirates in the middle sea, the Vikings had pirates too. Piracy has need mostly been a supported part for warfare to weaken the enemy by hitting their Trade ships or support warships too, pirates had excellent navigation skills and been great sailors. Maybe some of you liked the read about real pirates. I love to read history, as I think the most interesting and funny things real happen in real life... and most of that being a show they already been good actors just to scare, to rob without fighting. (Captain Blackbeard, real name Edward Teach 1680 - 1718)
  8. Oh yes you are right. It's not that I don't have opportunities to get bricks. I can get here bricks new parts also for 5 cents. I like challenges ;-) Right now I am doing the instructions and pictures with the Studio IO 2.0 for my ship. Pictures will be better and if I need the parts and build something else I have the instructions to quickly rebuild that... And oh yes the rigging but also the navigation back than was really tough. I am a big fan of History and what the British Accomplished at the Sea, wow. I mean like Trafalgar with Nelson. Imagine... combined Spanish / French Fleet because they needed to destroy the British Fleet for the invasion plans of Napoleon. Admiral Villeneuve was the French Admiral... The stats... 33 ships from Spain/France vs 27 British Ships. The British had less canons, less manpower... but has been best equipped and the crew was very well prepared. While British Gunmen could fire two shots the French and Spanish were way too slow, in the same time they just been able to shoot once. In the End... after Nelson with his famous anti traditional approach to attack them with their front, split the enemy lines and fire them from both sides.... the End? French and Spanish lost 22 Ships, Admiral Villeneuve was imprisoned in England, and the British? ZERO Ships lost! That's unreal but it is. And dislike the Spanish Armada being beating by the English and destroyed by a storm, this time it was no storm helping the British. The storm came AFTER the battle and the British were unlucky this time, because they had to sink like 6 ships that they took from the enemy, on the way back to Britain. But still, no British Ships lost... That's crazy but just an example how their power on the Sea has been. But back to topic I love sailing ships strategy and tactics, history... Again GREAT SHIP ;-)
  9. Yeah that's just a regular store. I mean the Lego Shop at Kaisereiche. I bought most of the new pieces for my Caravel from there for not more than 0,05 Cents per brick, some 0,10 Cents and so on, with a real big variety of new bricks. I was also there buying two bricks I needed for total of 0,10 Cents ??? So that's really an easy way to fill up your own MOCs JUST with bricks you really need and for cents.
  10. Hm also a nice idea. It's a long term project so maybe I try both as raw builds and see what happens
  11. I will change a lot, as this project is for long term, I still want to make it a playable set for my son. And as yellow and black really looks bad in my opinion in Lego. I studied more and more pictures of the original, and in fact the colour is more wooden, like tan, instead of really being yellow... I think I will adjust it a bit and make it a little bit different. I just don't like the colours how it looks on a lego ship.
  12. Thank you very much and exactly... It is Columbus' Santa Maria on the picture and my inspiration.
  13. I am a regular guest in the Lego Store at Friedenau, Kaisereiche. Maybe we can meet there this week when I feel better
  14. Sounds good so don't have to invest 200 Euro for new bricks. But just a little but I have to invest. Because I want a globe, some pictures on the walls and so on ;-)
  15. As I am in bed really sick now, slowing down a bit and buy me at least some new bricks to match the details from all y'all builds a little bit. It's really hard to generate different scenes, having 90% just black and grey bricks from the 80s... So I will improve the military port, Brady's Office and Lt. Carling's home as soon as I feel better. For now, I think it's time to rest, also my crew needs a little bit of rest too. Lt. Carling and his friend and no.1 Ian Wright are drinking, enjoying the sunset over Jameston and looking at their beautiful ship, taking about a adding a crew member and about the next mission, ordered by Admiral Flethcer to inspect the rebuild of Mesabi Landing... bilder hochlaen bilder hochlaen The port you see is the military section with the Office of Brady. But looks very 80s so with me new bricks I will place a lot of the old stuff and add some architecture. It's two big plates and a small one.... so bigger than the Lego Set Imperial Trading Post. Because the House of Lt. Carling is directly on a small island right beside the port where the row boats are. Just won't license anything that until I made it look nice ;-)
  16. Really great build, these kind o houses with that elements look very similar to a lot of villages in France and South Germany. Awesome! And a big laugh for myself... who called a guy VON MILLER? ? For all y'all who don't know, the super bowl MVP 2013 from the Denver Broncos. But to stay on topic, really good story and again, awesome build, still looking at it!
  17. Yeah I will make something out of it. But have to wait a bit until I get my hand on some new parts. My old lego just look odd with strictly grey, white and black pieces from castle. But have some Ideas. Updated the Office of Lt. Carling already a little bit, and hat even ate up all my son's new bricks that I am allowed to use. Just wanna make it more 2019 than 1989... ;@)
  18. On a twist of events, Admiral Fletcher confirmed that there is no other Admiral in Terra Nova then him. Lt. Carling and his Crew fell to pirates, criminals or maybe Oleon People who was in other uniforms and flags to pick up their people or the rebels... Officer Brady was furious when received the report. He received orders from Admiral Fletcher to go to Mesabi Landing and to report about the development after the storm. Officer Brady delivered Lt. Carling a list with high profile 1st mates ready to take second command of a brand new ship in the new world. At his office Lt. Carling went immediately to study the list and hire a veteran first mate, one with experience, as the crew is in need of that help to avoid future failings like today... As for me I am planning of licensing the department of the military port that Lt. Carling and Officer Brady work for. Also Carling's House will be present of an build I will try to license. For today that was enough of Lt. Carling's Adventures... The next ones are already calling
  19. "Sir Admiral Fletcher. Thank you for the quick response. I will promise to stay away of big fleets, I will concentrate on my report and on my duties at Jameston now. Long live the Queen Sincerely Yours Lieutenant Clay Carling" Sorry for the mistake. I do find something to make the story going on this way, my Character was fooled by Outlaws, maybe from the rebels from Oleon. Doesn't matter I will make something out of it, not using official forces anymore. I takes a bit to understand how this all works ;-)
  20. ...like I wrote already in the PM: Really great builds, superb photographed and withan awesome story to round it up. Perfectly played with real history modified into this world! The last word I can say is Wow... ;-)
  21. As Lt. Carling captured two rebels from "the Society of Heracles... He couldn't sleep at night and wrote a letter to the Admirality... "Dear Sir Admiral Woodbrouse, Sir Admiral Fletcher. The whole city of Jameston is taking about it, and you already have my report and the one of the Admiral that took the prisoners with him... I am very concerned what we do with them rebels. When we support them to cause a revolution in Oleon to weaken our enemy that will come back to us twice as hard. They will start supporting our Separatists as well as our People will receive the wrong signal. Fighting against the government shall never be supported in our very own interests. For the best of our country and our Empire. If you want me to do this mission to deliver the prisoners to Orleon Authority, it did be an honor to do so. I am open for every order and any mission for the Empire and for our beloved Queen Annetta. God save the Queen. SIncerely yours Lieutenant Clay Carling" The letter was sent directly to both Admirals offices, top secret just to be opened by themselves...
  22. You are right looks good. But that window parts look really rare, i don't remember that I ever seen that parts in the Lego Brick Store. But as I really don't know lego sets for the last 25 years, i can be dead wrong ;-) But I will keep watching for them, they really could fit and lower the cabin about one brick. Thx a lot
  23. Okay yeah I will see what I can or want to do, the smaller black parts I have to search in the Lego brick store on Berlin. I don't buy then online as I can get them for cents at the store, and it's like my challenge to not buy too much, cause with all parts I want and buy them makes it too easy. But that's just me ;-) Can you please explain me what you mean with Hogwards Windows and stuff? I stopped Lego in about 1994, and when my son started to love lego, the only sets I bought a the three newer ships from 2009, 2010 and 2015. I don't follow the rest of the Lego at all, as it's really not my type of toys. I mean all that Ninjago, Nexo Knights and the rest... So I really have no clue what happened between 1994 and 2019 in other themes than pirates.
  24. Thanks. Yeah I thought the same way but the original ship / see picture, is even more "unbalanced" and have a even higher back. So sticking to my inspiration the cabin should also been even higher. Also the front higher. I tried that higher front and back, but in Lego that looked just ugly. I wanted to lower the cabin, but as you see I would have to let out the black stones that makes the effect of being thinner on top. They are 3 bricks high, so I had to put a stone under the windows to higher them up for the black stones that covers the top of the windows. Without leaving at least one of that stones out I can't lower the cabin. But I want the effect and the top of the windows. I have no clue how I can replace them without losing the effect I want to. Here is some overview what I have, my availability of bricks... Black Monarchs Castle from 1988, the Falcon Castle of 1986, the Kings Castle from 1985, and a lot of other stuff from this area in Space and City too. Other parts came with the introduction of Pirates in 1989 and have a lot of them as I have four ships of the first two waves, all except the ugly Skulls Eye Schooner. Open for suggestions ;-)
  25. Capturing two Oleon rebels As Lieutenant Carling and his Crew are having already a daily routine, something unexpected happened... The day started as usual. Lt. Carling studied newspapers what is going on in Eslandola and Oleon, inside the Corrington Empire and all news that can be useful for the missions. He studied which Island will be next to check, what kind of trade ships they have to escort today and what time they supposed to come and leave. Like everyday, Lt. Carling makes a whole plan for the day. The weather is sunny, it's hot! Clay enjoys the life here already, without the bitter cold winters of Belson. After escorting two small ships, without any accidents the crew now had time to check the next Island... It's a small one, with a big rock on it. This Rockisland is so small, nobody of the crew expected to find something there. Also Lt. Carling did not believe to find anything there. Carling and three of his men went to check the rock. Seemed like a usual rock, so they wanted to go back when suddenly a big wave crashed their row boat into the rock... But it went into the rock. By taking a look inside, Lt. Carling couldn't believe what he saw. Two Oleon Soldiers, pared with red flags, red eppaulettes... As Lt. Carling know about what's going on in Oleon, he recognized the flags and the colour is used in Oleon by the "republicans" or "Society of Heracles". Lt. Carling did not wait a second, gave command to his one soldier on the ship to bring a boat, or another ship to take these refuges to the Office in Jameston. As the HMS Annettania went on to the port, Carling and his men started to ask the two Oleon Soldiers why they flew, and why here, to enemy territory? These Soldiers were very proud of their country. But something has to change. The Crew listened to the two men, but nobody of them really had sympathy for any of them two. Carling and his Crew are as loyal as they can be. So that two soldiers are traitors in his eyes, knowing when they contact Oleon and deliver them two traitors, they will be executed... Are strange discussion starts between Lt. Carling and his 1st mate, Ian... "Lt. Carling sir. Why shall we bring them to our Gouvernment and officially handing them to the Oleon Forces, knowing that they will be executed, Sir? Why not taking them back to Oleon secretly? They are trying to do a revolution, so why not giving them all they need and letting them do what they want to do... that would weakend Oleon a lot." Lt. Carling thought a while... "No, we will follow orders. Imagine Oleon would catch some Separatists from Corrington, and let them do and helping them to cause a revolution or a civil war. The Corrington Empire doesn't make dirty wars. We win our wars on the Sea! Corrington's Soldiers are no cowards. We have honor and pride, we have rules that we protect, we should live the way we are telling people to do." Suddenly it became darker... "Is it going to rain, Sir?" But it wasn't going to rain. The message of the captured political refugees from Oleon, it was so important that there wasn't another ship coming... there was a whole fleet coming! Lt. Carling was very impressed. One day he want to become an Admiral with a big ship like that, commanding a whole fleet. That is his dream... But there was no time for dreaming, as just some soldiers came out with the Admiral from the big ship. And before he could ask a name, they took the refugees on board and sailed away. "Great work! Excellent job, you are a few days here, already killed some pirates, brought back stolen Gold and now found some refugees, really excellent. Sir Lieutenant Carling, I will remember your name." Then he left before Carling could say a word. He just could handle the Admiral the red flag from the two Oleon Soldiers before he walked away. The Admiral didn't even want to know what the refugees said. Will they bring the refugees back to Oleon or will they help them? He really wants to know what is going to happen to them. Because he, himself, feels very uncomfortable if the Empire will help political refugees, republicans, criminals, traitors. But that's nothing what he have any influence on. He would like to speak to Admiral Fletcher and ask, who this Admiral right now was, what's his name, what they do with the refugees... But Carling doesn't want Admiral Fletcher to know that he is curious. Rather he just wants to do his job and follow orders. Right now he recognized how less influence he have, but he hopes that will change. For now, the crew headed home... And as Lt. Carling's Crew his happy, in a very good mood about another successful day, he himself can't let this accident go. He still thinks about to talk to Admiral Fletcher... But he really isn't sure what to do...
