  1. Hello everyone! I'm a newbie, and don't yet own a Lego train (I'm into the modular buildings), but I've always been fascinated by model trains since I was a kid, and though I've never owned any train of any kind, I'm thinking of getting the Lego Holiday Train set with the kit to motorise it. I'm really not up on the train knowledge that you guys all have, but I would really like the Holiday Train set to go with my Winter Village Toy Shop (10199) and partner the Holiday Train Set with the Lego Winter Village Train Station. I have a few questions though: I noticed that once you motorise this train set, there really isn't anywhere to place your mini figures. Are there any carriages that I could add that would match this set nicely, and still work well with the train? I noticed from Jang's review that the larger wheels tend to slip, and he suggested using a rubbed band to resolve this problem. Did anyone else come up with any other workarounds, or is this a fairly common trait of Lego train sets that have larger wheels? Is there any way to power trains through a mains plug? If not, which batteries do you recommend to buy? I'd also be interested in a little bit of history of the trains, and reasons why Lego moved to a new motor etc. if anyone could point me to any threads that discuss this and the advantages / disadvantages of the move. Thanks everyone... I'm aware this train received a mixed reaction when it was announced here... I realise that it's a much smaller train, and very unrealistic, and a slight upgrade from the previous version, but I do love Christmas, and I think for a small city, this train has a great look to it! I'll only ever have a small space for my modular buildings, unless I move into a bigger place, so a small track and small train are about all I could use... because of this, I think it's a sound purchase, especially as I'm into the Christmas sets... I love my big Christmas Tree from 10199 for instance! Looking forward to learning from everyone. I know nothing about trains! I can't express this enough.
  2. Definitely too similar, but I would love a Post Office... I think something like this would be up there with my favourites. Someone on the blog said the top of the box is identical to DD, but whether that's true or not??? I tried downloading it, but the top part of the box is too pixellated to confirm.
  3. Thanks, Jar JarBonks! Great name - I love it!
  4. Welcome, NullCube. I like your name. As a computer scientist, I can confirm null is used to set variables to a value of zero (nothing). Very cool. I'm new too, so just thought I'd say hello back. All the best with your technic builds!
  5. Hello everyone, I was advised to say hello here to the 37,000 members, so, hello! As a relatively new AFOL (15 months and counting), who only owned a few Lego sets as a child, I have been swept up by the creativity and fun that Lego brings, and now own a range of modular buildings: Fire Brigade Pet Shop Palace Cinema Parisian Restaurant Detective's Office Brick Bank Assembly Square Downtown Diner Although I own eight, I've only had the time to build three of them (BB, DO and PC). Of these, my favourite is the Brick Bank, which I know is uncommon, as most would choose The Detective's Office! I much preferred the facade and grandiose nature of the Brick Bank though. I am looking forward to the new modular building for 2019, and also picking up a train set for my city. I am a videographer by profession, and so I'm really looking forward to making some videos further down the line once my city has been built and my trains are running. I'd really like to push Lego filmmaking from a real time perspective and get creative by telling stories. Looking forward to sharing in the love of this board - you can't beat a forum! Best wishes, 'Draft
  6. Ah, I honestly think for as long as we have modular buildings, we'll never be too disappointed. Every modular has its own charm, and I think most people agree that the DD is a great build too, so I'm sure they have our best interests at heart. It's a long time to wait for each modular, so expectations inevitably reach greater and greater proportions, so hopefully we can all keep level heads and accept a direction that Lego goes in... which seems unclear at the moment... but I think if the next one is similar to DD, then we likely know the direction they will take for the next eight years... I always try to think that they're giving us a present each year, rather than making sure they fulfil our needs - I guess that's where MOCs come in, but I don't have the patience or time to do those. Thanks for sharing your favourite modular! It's great how many people love the PR, as I know it'll likely be my favourite too. I'm tempted to build the FB next, as I would love to have a fire engine in my small city. It's also one of the older builds, so I will test out how much I like the older versions, and if the answer is: not much, then I'll probably refrain from getting the Town Hall, Grand Emporium, Cafe Corner and Green Grocer sets... I'm hopeful for a re-release at some point of one of those... I think that would be epic for most newbies, but I'm just as happy to not have a few of the modulars, as I can't really place them anywhere at the moment and they cost a small fortune now that they're discontinued! Exciting time of year though! Fingers crossed someone finds another brochure and uploads it, so that Lego has to announce the next modular sooner rather than later!!!
  7. Still looking awesome, Dean! AS in many ways looks like the ultimate modular for its larger size, but I agree that it's not a modular that will be my favourite... I just think it's a pretty legendary set for what it stands for, and awesome that it has so many pieces and rooms etc! Glad you had fun putting it together, even if it wasn't all to your tastes! Fingers crossed we'll get a leak on the next modular in the next month or so!
  8. Thanks very much for posting this. I would love to build this set how you have, so it's great to have references! I may never do so, as I will only have one train at some point, and haven't got the space for a couple more years, but will see what I end up getting when the time comes! Still holding out that Lego makes another train similar to Emerald in the near future! Would be great to see one like it!!!
  9. Thanks for the recommendation, Dean. I think PR is a lot of people's favourites, so for those reasons, I was going to leave it until last... I figure it's always best to save the best until last, rather than feel more and more disappointed as I build. So out of AS, DD and the FB, which do you think would be the least enjoyable to most enjoyable to build?! I agree about the PC. The thing is, if it wasn't for the Palace Cinema, I would have never found a love for Modular Buildings. I used to be a teacher, and left teacher to set up my own videography business. I was given a sizeable voucher to Amazon from my school upon leaving, and so I thought it would be nice to get something meaningful with the voucher. When I stumbled across the PC, I figured it was the perfect was to show the transition from being a teacher to making films, even if they are mostly weddings or corporate jobs. I have a Minifigure that represents me, and I made three school children in the Lego store, so in my current city, I'm taking the kids from school to go on a cinema trip... I like looking across from my computer and seeing that story, as it shows where I was and where I've come, be it good or bad. So, although the PC is definitely one of my least favourite modulars, it is in some ways my favourite, as it represents something. I always loved the rooftop design, and the Palace sign too, but the BB is my favourite. It's so realistic with the exception of the money laundering! Haha I got our group of friends to buy my girlfriend the PR as well, so we have two of them now. We are considering doing the double PR build, which is shown here: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-10489/dagupa/parisian-restaurant-corner/ I'm not sure if building a MOC will spoil the experience of building the PR though, as it seems to be everyone's favourite. The other idea is to have two of them in the city, and it can be like a posh restaurant chain... see what happens when we actually have some time to build. Thanks for taking an interest!
  10. I've just read back over the last 15 pages or so - really interesting read. It's funny how we cling on to different rumours in the hopes of different things. I'd really like it if we had a re-release of one of the older modulars, particularly the GG - fingers crossed for 2019! I am a fairly recent AFOL (past 15 months or so) in love with modular buildings, and so I'm really looking forward to the new announcement - I hope we hear before the end of November - not too long to wait now. I have the DO, PC, BB, AS, DD, PR, FB and the large London Bus, along with some road plates. I really want to create a city one day, but honestly have no preference as to which building comes next. In my short time of experiencing rumours before releases (DD was my first experience of this), it was interesting just how many people had it wrong. I wouldn't be surprised if TLG surprised us again, and the release is something we'd never assumed. I hope so at least, as it's all the more fun going along for the ride. Out of the three that I've had the time to build so far, the BB is my favourite, over the DO and PC. I enjoyed the DO and PC builds, but the BB just felt like a real building. Therefore, I'm hoping that the next corner building gives a similar type of feel with the facade in particular. It'll be March next year before I have the time to build a new one, so there's no rush... even though I'd really like to know what the new modular building is going to be now!!! Thanks to everyone for posting and giving me an interesting 30 minutes. Looking forward to seeing the announcement in this thread, whenever that will be.
