Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Bricked1980 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I agree. I'd been looking forward to the designer video showing us some decent shots of the set. Hopefully Jangbricks will review the diner soon on YouTube. Reckon I'm gonna wait till I've seen his video before I make a decision about whether to buy this one or not. -

The designer video for DD has been released today. Looks pretty awesome! Just a shame the video seems to be more focused on the designer himself and doesn't actually show all that much of the diner. -

Even if the bricks were white, after a few years of being on display on a shelf they would turn in to tan anyway lol. -

It looks great. Glad to see there is a row of bricks next to the stairs that hold the technic pins to connect to other modulars. On this mornings leak it wasn't clear if these would be included on the left side of the model or not. -

No I don't mean the "Expert" logo/symbol. I'm just talking about the standard Creator logo towards the top left next to the Lego logo. They've updated this to a different font for the new 2018 Creator sets and on the Taj Mahal. However on the store calendar image released earlier It looks as if they've used the old version of the creator logo with the old font. -

I was also thinking it would work quite well to the left of AS. Just noticed something interesting... It's a bit hard to tell for sure because the new image is heavily pixelated, but I'm pretty sure they've used the old version of the Creator logo next to the image of the Diner. How strange. -

I have to be honest. After putting money aside the last few months and saving up to be able to afford the next modular I was quietly disappointed a couple of weeks ago when the first pic leaked and there was a big part of me that really hoped it was a fake. It seemed to suggest the TLG were taking the modulars in a new direction and I really couldn't see how the diner would work in a street scene next to all the previous sets. Now I've seen the new image though I have completely changed my mind. It looks great and much better from this angle showing the side with stairs etc. I can't see any reason now why this couldn't fit in with the other modulars. Wow, what a nice surprise to wake up to this morning, and I bet the official press release will be today at some point as well! -

There are some things that indicate a chance that the Diner could be fake. The minfigs faces, Jim's Diner missing an apostophe on the door sign and a few other things about the leaked catalogue page that don't follow the same style of previous modulars. However the image includes new 2018 Lego pieces and re-coloured parts that wouldn't be available to anyone unless they were a professional Lego designer. Also in recent days a video has surfaced showing an update to the Lego Worlds video game which contains a picture of the Pink Cadillac as seen in the leaked Diner image. So in my opinion this makes it beyond reasonable doubt that the diner has to be legit. Unless the Lego group have created the Diner as some sort of bizarre red herring to fool the copycat clone companies and throw everyone off the scent (extremely unlikely). However the thing I find particularly strange is that Lego haven't attempted to remove the leaked image, even over a week after it first surfaced. -

Don't give up hope quite yet of a press release today. With this set having a distinct American vibe it would make sense that they'd announce the set at a sensible time during the day for American lego fans. I think on the East coast of USA it's only around 8am at the moment so there is still a chance it could be announced later today. This wait is getting annoyingly frustrating!! -

Surely the official reveal will have to be made before the January store calendar gets released. Just checked back and the store calendar for January 2017 was first shown on 30th November last year. So assuming it will be the same this year, that means the Diner will have to be officially announced either today, tomorrow or Thursday. -

So what does everybody think are the best of the modulars? In my opinion the best is AS. It's such a fun and varied build and the interior details are incredible. After this my second favourite is PR. -

I thought Jamie was lead designer / manager of the creator expert line? This was mentioned during his interview in London during the summer when the London route master bus was launched. Either way the diner does look pretty different to all previous sets in the series so I wouldn't be surprised if they've used a different designer for this one anyway. -

Basically the only thing we know as fact is that there definitely WILL be a new modular set in 2018. I posted a link yesterday to a new Lego Rebrick competition where the grand prize is a copy of the next modular set. https://www.lego.com/en-gb/rebrick/contest-page/contests/expert-rebuilder As the competition ends on January 12th then we can safely assume that the set will be out in January as well, otherwise why would they be offering a prize that wouldn't even be available. Also if you look back over the last 3 months, a major set has been announced at the end of each month... Millenium Falcon - August 31st Joker Manor - September 27th Taj Mahal - October 31st I reckon it's a pretty safe bet that the new modular is gonna carry on this pattern and that we're gonna get the official announcemnet any time before the end of this month, it could even be today. My money is on either the 27th or 28th though. As for whether it will be the diner or not. I've been on the fence with that one all week but surely if it includes new re-coloured elements and the new 5 petal flower head then it has to be real, otherwise how would the designer have got hold of those parts? -

That write up from Zusammengebaut doesn't seem to be anything more than a summary of all the observations everyone else has already pointed out from the leaked photo. -
How about some sort of 3 in 1 time travelling set including 3 classic minifigs, a Knight, a Pirate and a Spaceman. Each of the sets 3 builds could be inspired by past themes. One each for Castle, Pirates and Space.

Just seen a new Lego Rebrick competition has just been launched, and the grand prize.... "THE NEXT CREATOR MODULAR due to be announced at a later date." https://www.lego.com/en-gb/rebrick/contest-page/contests/expert-rebuilder This 100% confirms that whether the diner is fake or not, there will definitely be a new modular set for January 2018 and it will be announced imminently. -
I would like to see that too. However my guess is that we'll see the current trend continue for more vehicles with minifigs and more of the modular houses / buildings. I would like to see something that celebrates the Lego Bricks 60th anniversary in some way.

You're right, it's definitely 26 wide. -

I agree, it can't be a corner building. It's hard to tell for certain but I think I can make out 28 studs wide which leaves 4 for the steps at the side, but either way there definitely wouldn't be enough room on a 32x32 base plate to include the steps on the left and an extra sidewalk along the right hand side of the building. I wonder what sort of detailing will be included on the wall next to the stairs? This building might look a lot better when the official images are released as there is still a lot left to be revealed. I must say I'm not very keen on the 4 windows next to the cream/tan section of wall. The brown meshed fencing pieces (not sure of the exact name) look a bit un-creative compared to windows on previous modulars. -

Assuming the image is real then I'm hoping it's just an early preliminary image and that the final product will include minifigs with the classic smiley faces. If it does get released with the faces we see in the picture though, then I think I can justify the reason for them doing this. When the modulars first started out the minifigs were never intended to be a major feature of the sets and I think they just used the classic faces to appeal to adults who remembered the faces like this from their childhoods. As the sets have evolved over the years, the designers seem to have placed more and more emphasis on the idea of a "theme" or "subtle storyline" running within each model. Not so much with AS but definitely with DO and BB. When trying to create the suggestion of themes or stories in the sets it's much more effective if the minifigs can be brought to life with different faces giving them more character. It might look a little jarring next to previous models in the series but if the designers intend to continue this trend of running stories or play features in the sets then I think it was only a matter of time before they made this switch to the modern style faces. -
I'm talking about these style of sets... This line seems to have been scrapped in favor of the newer open back buildings with modular sections which can be swapped about.

Just noticed the images are still widely available online and on page 215 of this thread. If the image was real wouldn't Lego have had them taken down by now?
