Technic 2018 Set Discussion
tohan replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
In the video about the 42078 (https://www.lego.com/en-us/products/themes/technic/mack-anthem-42078) the designer says at 00:18 that such an engine had already been done in Technic ("that we tried only once in LEGO Technic history"). Any idea what set he is referring to ? -
Technic 2018 Set Discussion

Looking at the recent lineups, I would suggest that TLG is making some efforts to deliver a large variety of sets topics, functions and even sizes. I'm quite excited about the 2018 sets (I haven't even yet built all the 2017 ones I acquired). 42078 looks like a flagship in its own right, even a 2 flagships in one I would say as the B Model looks really nice (and it's been so long since we've had a garbage truck anyway so it get points already for that alone) 42080 is also an unusual topic, 42081 seems nice also and 42082... well, who doesn't like a big crane ? I can't wait to see if 42083 brings a never seen before feature like the paddle shift of 42056... whatever the actual model will actually be, I'm willing to bet it will be great (but there is always room for a little rant here and there) -

42075 should look nice along 42068, the scale seems reasonably similar -

I think I had the same thought! -

You are absolutely correct. Although it did feel kind of wrong (I was maybe 8 or 10 at the time) and frustrating to have a third gear ratio that couldn't be used. Even though, this set was (and still is) an absolute marvel despite it's flaws and it's what got me hooked on Technic for years to come... -

I guess it didn't meet the high expectations of the AFOL who got hyped up by TLG markerting... I bought this set last year and I think it's great. What I really enjoy is to build a set and this build was really enjoyable. I don't really care that the gearbox may be faulty. Is it really supposed to mirror the real thing ? I think not. The system is clever enough for me and although it isn't perfect, it was fun to build (and play with it for a while). Do you remember 8860 gear box ? It was awful really, you could use only two gears out of the three for there was so much friction that you would just break everything if you tried to use the last one anyway. It was a bit of a let down but I still thought the set was a marvel. 42056 isn't perfect but it is still great in it's own right. My biggest disappointments were the hidden internals (I like to see things moving, it would have been nice to have at least a way to open the body) and the absence of B model (like 41999, that was a big let down for me). On the bright side, it is hard to argue that it doesn't look good and it is one of the rare sets that my wife allows to be displayed... the Wife Acceptance Factor ought to count! -
On the Future of Power Functions
tohan replied to JopieK's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
They did indeed. I actually bought the 8676 at the time and although it was a fun RC toy, it was a clear rupture from the more 'regular' LEGO set. I wouldn't bet on an exception to dismiss the rule entirely. I'm pretty sure what I mentioned was heard in this video but I haven't had the time to review it entirely to quote the precise time it is said. Sorry about that. -

Furthermore, I remember seeing a video where TLG designers were pointing out that Lego is meant as an indoor toy and they seem very reluctant to lean toward solutions that could imply otherwise. It certainly has to do with regulatory requirements as you are pointing out. -

I think that's a very harsh statement! Did 8649 have engine, suspension and funny opening hood/trunk/side flaps ? -

It does indeed tick many chekboxes of the Supercar list. I like the idea of a smaller 'almost supercar' after 42000 and 42039 which I wasn't excited about first but ended up liking a lot. I think I like this one right from the start -

Nice... too bad I wasn't patient enough and I already bought 2 copies of each... I really hope this isn't what was meant by "we're not through yet with the 40 years anniversary" that was mentioned a few weeks/months ago, but my spidey sense tells me it is. -

Did anybody notice that instructions for the newest sets B Models are named 42068_B.pdf, 42070_B.pdf and interestingly 42069B_1.pdf? I know the names are not always consistent, but could there be a 42069B_2 somewhere or is it just wishful thinking ? One can always hope... ;-) -

I can't agree more... sometimes it feels like we are ranting just for the sake of it. Maybe there is no point trying to rationalize that :-) I did feel the same at first but I also think that apart from maybe a very few exceptions, there is no such thing as a bad Technic set. I'm looking forward to building these new 2H sets as I will probably be weak and get all three... -

Very nice! I can't wait to see more from this series... Do you have any plans on releasing instructions ?

With the 40 Years Anniversary auto chassis instructions released as "42063_40Years" I can't help but wonder at 42067. Will it be a surprise set (that 42070 is supposed to tow as the stickers on the front bumper suggest) or is it just an other missing number ? -

Indeed, I was being a bit sarcastic as the snow plows from 8110 and 42054 (despite being seemingly quite good) look a bit like lazy b-models to me and I was wondering if TLG will pull this trick once again... -

Or a snow plow attachment, just like 8110 and 42054... -
This was a really cool move from Lego to provide such instructions as there is no direct benefit apart maybe from attracting more people into buying these 3 sets that they might have not otherwise. That's exactly what happened to me. And now that I've seen the sets, I'm considering buying them a second time so I'll be able to have all 3 original sets AND the Chassis. But that might be just me. I would really welcome a full overhaul of the 8860 in studless design (as I've mentioned here before), but the audience (or rather potential buyers) for this may be too narrow for it to be commercially viable. Still, I would buy it without a second thought.

Quite possibly the best of both worlds! As I do not (yet - it's actually on the way) own 8283 it's hard for me to judge. I was really happy to see a good implementation of the 4 wheels steering of 8295 that actually works (even though it still has a lot of slack and I think 8295 suffered more from its weight than of the design itself and the large wheels made it even worse - that being said, 8295 is not that bad IMHO!) -
If anybody's interested, I've tried to list the parts of the 40 Years Car Chassis here (please forgive / notify me of any mistakes) and I've made it into a Bricklink XML file that can be uploaded into a wanted list. I've counted 575 parts out of the 1059 (not counting stickers as parts) of the 3 sets altogether or 54%. Depending on how you prioritize the parts sources (I chose to go for 42063 first, then 61, then 57) you'll use various ratios of each set but no less than 27% and up to 75%. The order I chose uses 27% of 42057 / 47% of 42061 / 66% of 42063 but the reversed order will use 67% of 42057 / 68% of 42061 / 44% of 42063.
