Nocturnus Guild: Homepage, Sign-up and Discussion
Jareth replied to I Scream Clone's topic in Guilds of Historica
I had planned to upload my pictures to Brickshelf Tuesday and link them here Wednsday, but I was unable to Upload them until today (Friday) and I wont be able to access a computer until Monday at the earliest. My point being is that you may not be able to access the pictures I'm talking about until the folders become public, hopefully by Saturday. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?m=Jareth The Boats folder has examples of what I call the Sargasso Rafts. Cheap watercrafts made of thin Lathes of wood woven and filled with a mat of Sargasso Seaweed from the southern ocean. They are ideal for poling through the Morouth swamplands due to the protective benefits the seaweed gives against plant based life. They are also often used for pontoon bridges. On a building level, the 4,5,6 triangle construction would also make a great portcullis design. The Flowers folder has two Giant flowers found in the Morouth Swamplands. I like to think their pollen has Magical properties. I'm going to combine the Rafts and Plants into a Mourouth MOC at some point. Scarbourough is the name of my town theoretically located on the northernmost peninsula of Nocturnus. These pictures showcase the defensive wall. Originally Scarbourough was named Nevheim when some Mitgardian expatriates settled in an abandoned drow fort near a salmon river. However after the attacks of the mad wizard, Bladewind, the town was renamed after the scarred appearance of the rebuilt buildings (including the wall) and the scars many townsfold still have today. On another building note. I don't think the pictures show the black/red texture enough. My goal here was to use castle panels without ending up with a boring grey wall. The black part is Black castle panels with the red details added using a snot technique, and I added as many Dark Grey bricks in the grey section to make it look a little rough. -
Thanks for the pictures! I Like the new horses, the use of sand green and the giant spider, I just hope it's face is printed and not stickered. I'm not so confidant about the new troll yet. I also wonder if there will be any smaller sets in this line. Shelob is the only must buy for me right now.

I did a lot of sorting today. As I was sorting I was also picking out key pieces for my next projects. Minifig pieces for my Nocturne Army, black and yellow for my Blacktron I project and Brown for troll fortifications.

Yeah, the harry potter one is a good lego version of the movie troll. I personally don't own the Harry Potter one, but just on image alone, I vote Fantasy. That being said, the fantasy one isn't perfect either. I'd love for it to have a movable head at the least, and the hands don't hold things as well as I'd like. Not that these issues will stop me from buying reasonably priced trolls if I find any.

Here is a champion for Nocturnus Sir Blight the outcast. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=5345226 Rumor has it that this death knight and his knightmare steed have existed since before the unification of Historica. A few historians even whisper that His cavalry was the first army to wipe out another faction, and this is what led to his cursed existence.

How odd. I can see them on a library computer without logging in. I will try and find out what the problem is. Edit: I think the folders were not initially public but now they are. Please try again. Unfortunately I'm going on vacacion tomorrow so I won't be able to correct anything until I get back. -
Someone asked me what fighters are going to be in the moonbase stadium.... http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=5345453 The hammer brothers, a doomask and a blacktron gladiator

Despite my shocking lack of building times these days, I am pledging my allegience to Nocturne! If my lord would like one of our company to be sent to the underdark as a gladiator he may do so, or we would be glad to lend some of the special armorments to his chosen champion. In any case, I have taken inspiration from a lot of sources adn I hope other Nocturne army builders may take some inspiration from me. Here are my armies! http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=464287&n=0 Pic 292: Troll mercenaries including captain, two beserkers (one with claws and one with club) and The Hellbeast! (more on the hellbeast when I have more time) Pic 294: Troll Heavy Infantry Pic 295: Troll Wall breakers, Joachimsthal, Hamburger and Korbach, the two with shields are named after the first twon they ever sacked, the one in the middle is named for.....different reasons. Pic 299: Troll druids Pic 301: Our lizardman skirmishers. It was difficult getting these rare sharkmouth lizardmen to work for us, but we evntually killed one, hollowed him out and put a human inside to lead them. Pic 303: Merish Squad, led by Cynthia who has the maracas of the sea which allow her to cast "Control Entree" and a few other spells (note the crab and lobster are not orignal designs) Pic 306: The Scarborough Militia consists of five "Barrel Golems" and their gnome repairmen. Allthough they hit as hard as any traditional golem or elemental, they are not magical in nature, but are limited to a 10 mile radius around the community of scarborough, due to continual breakdowns and need for replacement parts. We are currently working on a way to increase their effective range. Pic 314: The Jägermonsters! I know the look like werewolves, but these guys are different. For one thing they will occasionally fight for hat reapir services. (if you want to know the source material, http://girlgenius.wikia.com/wiki/J%C3%A4germonster) Pic 315: Formorians and....whatever you call a Hybrid of Ogre and Cycops. We were hoping that this hybrid would be able to use and maintain Balista sized crossbows, instead they have the size of an Ogre and the depth perception of a cyclops. We give them scraps of armor and weapons and throw them at Sheild walls. Pic 316: Our dwarves, the rustnoses. Excellent sappers when they are sober. Pic 317: Mummies are the magical support of our undead squad Pic 321: The Death Knights and their spare parts cart Pic 322: The Armored undead. Too many necromancers treat skeletons as cannon fodder. We have found that by giving them armor and the occasional reapir, they actually become more effective fighters over time. But I Digress. Here are some of the mosters we have tamed or captured in our area. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=494639 Pic 325: These strange creatures were refered to as "Feral Engines" by the refugee fleeing them, but we call them "Lashers" Wait....weren't there five of them? (Based off the atlantis Octopus) Pic 327: Lords of Illusion (based off Lego Games "Lava Monster") Pic 329 & 330: Beholders Pic 334: Doomask...fairly easy to train as a puppy. -
Another issue Ive discovered is that when a hero is defeated and is knocked back one square if that square is occupied by another hero....wierdness ensues. In some cases the entire party is lined up and the defeated hero is "crowd surfed" to the back of the line. Usually I don't like ambiguous rules, but Lego games encourage you to make your own rules, so I'm OK with it. But that's why this folder is here.

Thanks for your compliments and questions. Allthough other people did a great job answering questions before I could, I thought I'd give my own responses for clarification/confirmation. @ JopieK: Allan Smith is right. I don't own a computer so I'm limited to about 2 hours a day using a computer library. This makes learning new computer skills difficult. Hopefully I'll learn to resize pictures soon. Perhaps the Groom will teach me how after the honeymoon. @ legomaniac83: Yes, it's a gift, I am also working with a freind to make a similar set for a wedding in July. That one the bride actually plans on displaying at the wedding! Also, unfortunatelly dark tan is the color I used for most of the people and it is not available in many shapes. I would have used 1x4 hinge plates for the arms, but no dice. 1x4 tiles are not available in dark tan, but it is a good idea. If you look closely you will see that the necks look a little odd. Thats because 2x2 plates aren't available either, and I had to make the connection in a different way. On the plus side because the hinge plates I wanted to use were not available it forced me to come up with an alternative build and that allowed me to use tiles for the shoulders. @K-nut and kciR: Yes, the groom is wearing glasses and actually they are 1x1 round tiles from brickforge (also known as lense piece) Hmm.....I should have taken pictures of the backs as well.

Some of my friends are getting married soon, and here's what I'm building for them http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=5334000 The difficult part has been getting the parts. I'm insisting on "new Pieces" for a work this important. What still needs to be done? Well, one of the ushers needs some work. The one that has a beard shouldn't. I also might change the groom's and usher's hips a little, and I also might take the gloves off the groom and ushers. Too bad many parts are not available in Dark Tan. Oh, The arbor in the background needs a few more parts as well.

Stunning.....just stunning I really like the details that break up the blank wall syndrome. The combination use of slopes and arches on the front towers is fantastic, as is the double use of arches in the side passageways. (Just using one arch with 1x1 plates seems...hollow, using two arches makes it feel more solid somehow) The trebuchet is great, especially how you added seats for the plague victims to occupy before they are hurled at your enemy This creation reminds me of old 8 bit RPGs like dragon warrior or final fantasy.

Thank you all for your kind words. In answer to the question, the interior will have gladitorial games, bench seating, two balcony style box seats (you can see them in blue) a F.O.A.S. concession stand (fleebnork on a stick) and a special seating section for water breathing aliens. Now that I can finally post pictures on bricklink, I do have a few ideas for the first gladiator fight. Oh yeah, thanks for the link, I'm going to give it a try, I just wish I had more time/competence when it came to computers. Although it stands fine on its own, I don't want to put any weight on it at all. OK, lets try deeplinking a picture Ok, I was able to deeplink it, but the image is too big, but I found an article on how to resize it.

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=493304 Sorry it's just a link. I'm not computer savy enough to upload pictures here. Anyway, the tall roof was the preliminary, I decided that the lower roof looked a lot better. Now I need to work on the interior!

Hmm...a brick built troll....what a simple elegant solution. I like it and I hope that's what lego does. Also, let's be honest, TLG doesn't always come up with good themes themselves http://peeron.com/inv/sets/6494-1 Geh! I'll take knight's kingdom over that any day. But licensed themes...well, I'm not a huge collector of them, btu I can't think of any of them that are truly irredemable.

I've seen a lot of responses of "All stores do that" I work retail....not a place that says lego. We don't do that on purpose at all, but scammers have become very talented at returning damaged and used (often dirty) merchandise without us knowing it. It's a triple edged sword. My store accepts used merchandise back and gives store credit and then throws away the useless stuff, but so many customers have dealt with other stores restrictive return policies that they think we will only accept Unused merchandise back. The scammers sneak bad merchandise back into the stores which makes retail chains want to get more restrictive with returns. The only way for a store to protect itself is to open the boxes of returns which pisses off honest customers, who feel like they are being accused of wrongdoing and makes the package look like it was opened and returned. On a slight side note the amount of people who refuse to purchase a box that has been opened is amazing, but the people who refuse to buy a package that THEY opened is astonishing. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is don't blame the retailer, blame the scammer.

I'm not even British and I think it's an awesome idea. I'd definitely get them for my nieces. Of course, I'd get any sort of improved quality crackers for my nieces if I could find them, all you can find in America are terrible cheap ones.

My problem with your complaint is that it hasn't happened yet. You're already disappointed when they haven't even shown us a single set. Maybe you've got a great idea... if you expect it to suck, then it'll at least meet your expectations, and likely you'll be ecstatic at some of the sets. On the other hand, if you're picturing a Helms Deep set like some of the MOCs you've seen online (that have like 20k pieces) you're definitely going to be disappointed. I think if we have some reasonable expectations... things like Helms Deep or Minas Tirith being multiple small sets, like Hogwarts, I don't think you'll be setting your sights too high. Perhaps I am predicting the future too much, but I am not expecting a set that perfectly shows the set of those scenes. One of the scenes I am most interested in is "Balin's Tomb" or "They've got a troll" How can they do this without it being hideously expensive? In order to do it right, you would have to have the entire LOTR party several goblins and the troll. If they do that many figures, then just to make the set work you would have to do the entire room....all of a sudden this becomes a $100 to $200 set. In all likellyhood, It will probably have the tomb, the well, a doorway and a couple of figures...but which ones? Yeah, I can go on with predictions and hopes, but in the end we will just have to wait and see. As far as lego goes, I know they can't make every scene into a set and make a profit, and If they made every set huge and complete, then I wouldn't be able to aford them. It's a balancing act, and I think lego does a good job, even if it isn't exactly the way I would do it. Anyway, gotta run.

In general I support Licensed sets, because they have forced TLG to produce new molds that are then used for other sets. Now TLG is making new pieces for it's own lines (like the snakes for Ninjago)I just hope the pieces don't get too specialized like Megablocks licensed sets are. Some things I don't like about Licensed sets are the prices and the "incompleteness" of the lines. Let's take Indiana Jones for example. Three movies, 16 sets, and some of the sets are just "army builders" how many scenes are missing from the movies? With star wars the habit of releasing multiple sets for the same spaceship is a little annoying too. This is why I am not that excited about the lord of the rings sets. Although I think they chose good scenes to make sets, I can't help but feel that a lot is going to be missing from the trilogy and TLG is going to concentrate on the Upcoming hobbit movie. Oh well, I am glad there is a castlish theme this year, and I hope it looks like a combination of Fantasy and the civilians in kingdoms.
-
I give the sets a resounding....meh...new parts are cool. I think there are two things missing from this argument, First Lego is doing a better job including women in their normal sets. Second, this girls theme has been tried before. Larger figs with pink accessories didn't work then, will it work now? TLG seems to think so, but I have my doubts. I would prefer the sets to have less pink, but keep the new figures. At least it would be trying something new.
-
If you are near a Lego Store you could get Bulk Boxes there...they are rather expensive, but worth it for the price. I'd suggest experimenting to find out if you need 1x4, 1x6, 1x8 or whatever in bricks, BEFORE you order a box of them. Anyway, having recently worked on a large....scarp that HUGE space project recently, I would also suggest keeping an eye out for clearance. When I started collecting I managed to get a lot of red themed bricks on clearance. Even more importantly, I got multiples of these sets http://peeron.com/inv/sets/8057-1 http://peeron.com/inv/sets/7942-1 http://peeron.com/inv/sets/8402-1 Basically, by getting multiples of these sets, I was able to get a lot of goof gribleing parts, and I set up the first color. Now, giving that a LOT of new town sets are coming out next year, I think perhaps you should keep an eye on the police sets, and perhaps see if you can change your color theme to white, gray and blue.

Here you go.....a couple of belleville sets it looks like. Man I wish those were more readily available.

Boy, I had given up interest in the Dino theme, but this has brought it back. I really like the modular dino, the figures are cool, the gun is cool, the truck is a little meh, but is looks good for parts. It still seems a little overpriced for me but, that's what sales are for.
