  1. Well...it's not the 6000+ piece behemoth that I was anticipating. However - it is absolutely gorgeous! Looking at all the pics, who cares how many pieces it consists of, because it looks incredible! Loads of little details, and yet it's also so slick. No doubt this will fit in wonderfully on my shelf next to the Taj Mahal and Tower Bridge. Day 1 purchase please!
  2. Great to hear about and see pictures from another EB adventure! Glad that everyone seemed to have so much fun, it's really wonderful that you guys are able to organize events like this.
  3. Another incredible Architecture review, Rufus! These are always such a pleasure to read. Upon seeing the first images of this set, I was pretty disappointed. It looked small and ugly. Two days ago while at my local Lego store, I saw the model on display alongside some of the other sets from the Architecture series and I had to do a double-take. The Leaning Tower actually looks really great in person. As you mentioned, it seems significantly larger than you'd first expect. While it certainly isn't round, the pentagon shape doesn't seem all that bad. Sure a larger model would be more accurate, but you'd have to throw way more parts at it, and I ultimately don't think it would be worth it. This is already a pretty repetitive build, and a larger model would only make things more tedious. At the current size, the model captures the essence of the tower pretty well. I won't be running out to buy this one right away, but I know I'll be tempted enough by it in the future to pick it up. Edit - In Canada this costs $45. $5 more than Big Ben. This seems pretty reasonable considering the size of the model.
  4. Incredible review as per usual, Rufus! Finally got around to picking up this set yesterday. I missed out on the first UCS X-Wing, so it was amazing to acquire this new one. The build was enjoyable, and the finished model is impressive. The ship looks way better in person than in any pictures. Overall I'm really happy with the set, but I have the same complaints as many people. The biggest aesthetic flaw for me is the nose of the ship. Even without any comparison photos, the nose just looks wrong. It's disappointing that on a model this size that the nose is still so darn ugly. I'll definitely be modifying it. The engines don't bother me too much as they at least are pleasing to the eye. Sure it'd be nice if they were bigger, but that's really only because I know they're supposed to be bigger. The massive gap between the wings for the opening mechanism is a bit unfortunate, but they open and close so smoothly that I'll take the tradeoff. I'm a massive fan of printed pieces, so I'm always dissapointed by stickers. Big expensive models like this really deserve to have nice printed pieces. The cockpit stickers were of course the worst, but the technique of cutting out the clear part made applying them easier and the end result looks flawless. I haven't been able to stop starring at or tinkering with the ship since building it. Though it's a little awkward due to a lack of a good place to grip the hull, swooshing the ship is completely addictive. Reenacting scenes from the movie have never been so much fun!
  5. What a beautiful set! I've had sky-high expectations for an Ewok village, and this managed to meet them. The set as a whole looks almost exactly as I'd imagined - multiple massive trees, a variety of platforms, and most of the details from the scenes in the movie. I'm not sure why, but I was hoping that there might be a couple more functions or traps. Looking at the set though, I'm not really sure what other features would make sense to be there. Perhaps just a more elaborate net trap for Han, Luke, and the others when they get caught by the Ewoks. The net that is there is small and it doesn't look like it has a crank to raise or lower it even. The price for something this substantial is pretty much to be expected, but the $300 price tag still hurts. I was hoping for a higher piece count, but that's really only because I love really long builds. I know once I pick this up and build it, I'll look at and think to myself "This was sooo worth it". Great job TLG! Glad to see a set like this being made.
  6. Amazing! The Opera House has been a long time coming, so it's nice to get more info. A few years ago it had been revealed that the Opera House would be the largest Lego set in terms of pieces, so I hope that ends up being the case. That would mean 6000+ pieces. I've been itching for a huge non-Star Wars model since the Tower Bridge. This has become my most anticipated set of the year, I can't wait for pics! Seems as though the Ewok Village could be larger than many of us were expecting. Hopefully it is a massive and highly detailed set along the lines of the Death Star playset, but made up by a bunch of trees and bridges and whatnot. I can see this having around 2000+ pieces, as there would likely be some larger parts, and a fair amount of figs. Looking forward to the new Winter model as well. These are always beautiful sets. I've been trying to steer clear of Lego for the past 5 or so months so that i could save up boatloads of money for large models. The Opera House should be a day 1 purchase, and maybe even the Ewoke Village too. Thanks for sharing, Grogall!
  7. Nicely done, thanks for sharing! These X-Wings sure have come a long way, though I still have a massive soft spot for 7140.
  8. Thanks for the pics, Grogall! I love the entire Lone Ranger line. I definitely want to pick up all of the sets. Once upon a time I would not have thought that a liscensed Western theme could be so appealing, but I'm glad to have been proven wrong! If I do have nitpick, it's that I definitely prefer the old fabric teepee pieces to new plastic one.
  9. Fantastic review, MB! The Imperial Hotel looks like a fantastic set. I fell in love with the architecture line after picking up Fallingwater, and I've been snatching up every set in the series since. I'm really happy with the decision to turn the hotel into a set. TLC has done a great job of recreating it in plastic form. Looks like there are lots of interesting building techniques, and some good parts in there too. The real building has so many details that I would have liked an even bigger model to help capture those bits. However, considering the relatively small size of the model that they have put out, they managed to pack it loads of the details anyways. Very happy with this set. I look forward to picking it up as soon as it become available!
  10. Wow, I can hardly believe that a second UCS X-Wing is a reality! I'm so happy about this. I remember always looking at the boxes for the original UCS X-Wing and Tie in stores and wishing I had the money for them, because they looked so darn cool. While I'm not absolutely blown away but the look of this (it looks almost too clean and tidy), it still looks like a great model. I'm happy with the changes from 7191, especially the printed canopy piece. I suppose my biggest complaint is that the fuselage still doesn't have a hexegonal shape. I'm not going to make the mistake of missing out on this set!
  11. Just finished building this beauty. Definitely look even nicer in person than in pictures. The car is still kinda cluncky, but the cinema is gorgeous inside and out! Love the printed star elements, but the stickers for the posters and the marquee were a bummer. Oh well, overall I'm super happy with the purchase.
  12. I'm not one to like to spread rumours, but I noticed this in the Star Wars forums: cavegod, on 05 February 2013 - 11:00 PM, said: 同时还有其他五位数消息 LEGO 10236 Star Wars Ewok Village £200 LEGO 10235 Creator, Product name unknown LEGO 10234 Creator, Sydney Opera house £250 Would that not be a pretty darn big Opera House? I remember a number of years now reading something in one of the forums (I think it was in an old thread for the Tower Bridge), that a large scale Sydney Opera House was in the works and that it'd be the largest Lego set released to date (in terms of pieces, and at that point the Taj Mahal was out, so that'd mean 6000+ pieces). As for the Leaning Tower - I don't think it looks bad, but it won't be something that I run out to pick up. Looking forward to grabbing the hotel in a month from now!
  13. That is wicked! I've done a run through of Ocarina of Time just about every year for the past 13ish years - I can never get enough of it! Bongo Bongo is one of the most interesting bosses in that game, and your recreation of him/it is fantastic! I would love to see the other boses somehow recreated in a similar fashion. Thanks for sharing!
  14. Light definitely does play a factor, though there are so many variables at work. I have a lot of old sets with white parts that got yellowed. With these sets in particular, it was only the sides of the bricks facing the light that got discoloured. This was the case for about 90% of my sets that got discoloured. With the other 10%, parts became discoloured whether they were directly facing the sun or not. And even with those sets, the pieces of the same colour must have come from different batches as some of the parts were discoloured, and some weren't. All I know for certain is that within the past 10ish years (ever since I seriously starting trying to protect my Lego), I haven't had any more problems with discolouration.
  15. As Polish Guy mentioned, you can buy rolls of UV blocking film and apply it to any windows in your room. These are rated at around 90% + effective against UV rays. You still get sunlight through your windows, but you're significantly more protected from the various rays that discolour your Lego. But it all comes down to how well you want to protect your sets, and how easily you want to be able to access them. Having a room dedicated (at least mostly) to Lego is good as you can block off or treat windows, cover up vents so that dust doesn't get blown into the room, and close the door and turn off the lights whenever you don't need to be in there. Having Lego in bedrooms and living rooms is the worst, as that's where the most dust builds up from people being/passing through. If your Lego is in an area like that, consider investing in shelving or display cases with glass doors. This allows you to see all the sets while providing protection from dust. Just keep in mind that dust can be cleaned off, while discolouration from air and light is nearly irreversible. It's my philosophy that Lego should be looked at and played with, so I have all my Lego built and on display in a room with UV resistant film on the windows, and the sets themselves are all in cases with glass doors to protect from dust. I can access the sets easily, but they're pretty well protected too.
  16. Thanks for sharing the pics, Grogall! This looks like a really nice set! Despite the relatively small size of the model, it's packed with details! The architecture of the building really allows for more complex building techniques then we've typically gotten so far in the line. I can't wait for this thing to come out!
  17. Finally picked up this set and built it. Wasn't really surprised by the box being the same size as the modular buildings, but it did create a false sense about the size of the finished model. The build was quite enjoyable. I dumped all the parts into a big pile to make things take longer. The van is just as great as I hoped it would be. The amount of snot parts to hold the 6x6 tiles on the sides seemed like overkill, but that is in no way a negative. The gate is even more detailed and impressive looking in person. The construction of the two figures on the gate was quite clever. The asylum looks amazing when completed. It's bigger than I thought it would be after having read the review, but it's still just a tad on the small size. I think that if I didn't have lots of other huge Lego sets to compare the asylum to it might seem more impressive, but even when placed beside one of the modular buildings it feels a bit small considering it's the same price. It's easier to appreciate all of the neat details both in the architecture and interior details when viewing the set in person, but the lack of real "play-functions" is more apparent. Overall, I'm really happy with the purchase. Though I complained about the size of the model, it is still an impressive sight. There are also admittedly a decent amount of little things to fiddle around with that will keep me coming back for more. I consider this a must own set - regardless of what themes one normally collects. You're right, there are no 1x2s.
  18. Agreed about the lack of sand red. That or maybe even dark orange. Anyways, I'm not too concerned about the colour as it looks pretty good as is (just be nice to give it a different colour to help differentiatie it from other sets in the line). I've fallen in love with the Architecture line once again. I picked up some of the smallest sets when they first came out, but then when Rufus reviewed Villa Savoye, I went out and grabbed Fallingwater. Then it was Big Ben, then Robbie House, then Villa Savoye, and then the whole line. Funny enough, it was just this morning that I picked up the final set that I needed, as now we finally have a picture of the Imperial Hotel. I think that the building looks really neat, and I would have loved for another super detailed set to reproduce it, but I'm satisfied enough with the 1000+ piece set that we're getting. I know the price will be pretty steep, but the whole package for these architecture sets - from box, to manual, to finished model is always so impressive that I don't feel like I'm being cheated. I may avoid more detailed pictures of this set and just pick it up when it hits store shelves so that I can discover all the little details on my own as I build it. Very excited for this set!
  19. Loved Skyfall soooo much! This is a fantastic moc, it has everything from that scene! Now I wish there was licensed James Bond Lego, I would definitely buy a set like this!
  20. Wow! Thanks for that translation, L@go! I voted for the MWT, but not for the other models. I was certain that I was going to go into production. Pretty disappointed by that decision, but I believe there may still be a future for something like that. I'm a huge fan of Back to the Future, but the Delorean model doesn't do a lot for me. Depending on the final product though, there is a very good chance I would buy it just for the sake of having an official BttF Lego set.
  21. This is the most excited I've been for a modular building since perhaps GG. I think that the exterior styling is really fresh in comparison to the rest of the line, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what TLG has done for an interior (having said that, I'll be avoiding pictures of the interior as I want it to be a surprise when I build it). I've got mixed feelings about the car. I almost like it, but there are many aspects of it that seem so unrefined. I'm also disappointed that it looks like we'll be getting out first clone minifig in the line. The figs have never played any role in my desire for the buildings, but now it'll be distracting to have two of the same ladies on the sidewalk. Even though I expect the price and piece count to be similar to everything that we've gotten so far, I'm still interested in finding out what they will be. Hopefully this isn't released any later than March - I can't wait to pick it up! P.S. Thanks for posting the find, Grogall! And SwissBrick, your photostitch appears to be pretty accurate - and by the looks of it the theater integrates well with the rest of the buildings.
  22. Thanks for another review, Algernon. This is my favorite set from the first wave of Galaxy Squad. I've been playing around with it and the Bug Obliterator for a couple weeks now - they're a lot of fun! I don't know why, but I've always been a sucker for land based sets in space themes. Sure I love the flying ships, but we expect them whenever we get a space theme and there are usually an abundance of them. The land based vehicles are arguably rarer and for whatever reason, I usually find them more interesting. The Vermin Vaporizer is a perfect example of this - though it's not even the "flagship" set of the current wave, it's the most interesting set and has the most going on. Big rugged vehicle - check. Small buggy that can be deployed - check. A mech that integrates into the main model and yet can also be deployed on its own - check. Control station/lab - check. Enemy vehicle - check. There is a lot of content packed into this relatively small set. It's made out of lots of useful pieces, the finished product looks great, and its got loads of play value. Win! Now, I do have a few nitpicks. As mentioned, the front ramp from the buggy is next to useless. I appreciate that it's there, but it needs a redesign for smooth operation. The red bricks for the mech to sit on are a huge eyesore. I know TLG wants it to be easy for us to see where the mech is suppose to sit, but those red bricks stick out worse than a sore thumb. That was an easy fix as I used them on the bottom of that stack and placed the grey bricks on the top layer where the mech sits. Finally, the insect vehicle is pretty ugly. It's got some great parts and adds another element of play value to the whole set, but in my opinion it's a throwaway in terms of design. Overall I really like this set. I'm not sure where I rank it in terms of land based space vehicles yet, but it's a great set regardless.
  23. Wow, that Lion temple looks fantastic! I'm so glad to see that it's some big crazy design and not something we've seen a hundred times already. If it's half as good as the Portal of Atlantis, then we'll be in luck. Hopefully clearer pictures reveal that it's full of neat details and some interesting functionality.
  24. Pretty harsh criticisms considering the low quality of the pictures. That castle looks like the most classic-styled one that we've got since...classic castle. If we weren't just coming off of Kingdoms, I'm sure everyone would think that this line was the best thing since *insert something great*. I'll reserve any more judgment until we have more pictures. But I do hope that these sets have more interior details then the recent castle themes have. We seem to always get these big structures with empty rooms. Guess we'll find out.
  25. I think that the biggest three (Titan, Crawler, Mech) look pretty awesome. If TLG gives us a base for the squad at some point then I could be satisfied with the theme as a whole. After building the Bug Obliterator, I was thinking that it was a bit small-ish, so I'm glad that there are bigger sets on the way. I look forward to seeing better pics.
