I understand what you mean but I don't agree with condemning the whole set just for the one-piece nose. Out of an entire set (~600 pieces), there's ONE aspect of the train design, the nose, which is not customizable. Sure, by why is that such a big deal? You still have the rest of the set, other than train specific wheels & bogies etc. of course, which is all brick built. As for the lack of doors, I agree. That is unfortunate. 7938 had that problem as well, did it not (for the passenger cars)?

i'm afraid I don't understand. I'm an AFOL and just got 60051 recently. 7938 never appealed to me, but the new one did. IMHO, it looks much nicer and looks more realistic. What is the problem with 60051? Is your issue just the one-piece molded nose, vs. a fully brick built front end? Are you just coming from the perspective of a child's build experience?

The 7938 never interested me at all, but I did recently pick up the new passenger train 60051 and I like it a lot. It is only my 2nd lego train (the first being the Christmas Train set), and the first complete "kit" and first power functions train setup for me. 7939 on the other hand does interest me. I procrastinated on buying it during its production run, mostly because I never really found any good deals on it (in Canada). But recently I've been looking for one. But I'm also interested in the new cargo train set 60052. Since I don't have either in hand yet I can't say which I like better yet. There are features I like in both so I will probaby end up getting both. Unfortunately the train bug awoke in me really late, and I just missed Horizon Express.

Is the current PF train motor not compatible with those early 2006 RC train sets? I thought the old motor was the main weakness of that RC system.

I haven't studied the parts list in too much detail for the SSD yet. But when I was tackling sets like Corner Cafe for example, I knew going in which parts were trouble (like the doors, the blue arches, etc.). Luckily I own the UCS MF(boat thingies?) and ISD (magnet holders?) sets so I don't have to worry about those. I just didn't know if SSD contained anything particularly unique, rare or costly.

Sorry I should've clarified better in my post. I was asking very specifically about the SSD set itself, either from people who own it and are intimately familiar with its contents or have attempted piecing it together already themselves (and the specific hurdles they found). I've very familiar with Bricklink (call me a veteran) and I've already gone through this process building three modular sets this way (MS, CC, GG) as well as a number of smaller sets. So I'm no stranger to the methodology and time committment involved.

Bumping an old thread. A recent thread about bricklinking a UCS Falcon got me thinking, is there anything particularly challenging with respect to the 10221 SSD? Any very rare or cost prohibitive parts in that set? Note: IF I were to undertake this, I'd probably skip the minifigs and anything pertaining to the "interior" detail. i'd primarily just want a displayable ship.

LEGO group should not be political. Bowing down to special interest groups and lobbyists whether its environmental issues or religion is political. This is a kids toy. It's supposed to be about fun! They should leave the damn politics out of it.

I think getting free brick separators is a silly thing to complain about, other than the fact that I paid previously for my first two old-style green ones, plus one new orange one (when they first came out, before it was obvious they were going to be given away in sets). I look at my old damaged vintage lego from my childhood of the late 70s/early 80s and see the signs from using teeth, kitchen knives etc. back then to try to separate my lego. Now with the proliferation of these current separators no child out there should have to go without one.

I know the subject has been beaten to death. My recollection was it was totally a cost-based decision by the company. Their equipment used to produce the metal rails was falling into disarray and was deemed too expensive and/or impractical to replace hence the decision to totally abandon it. That said, we all know how financially successful TLG has become over the last 5-10 years. They have been making like bandits, and surely could afford the capital investment for new tooling for rail components. However corporate bean counters would probably still frame it as not enough of a business case for the investment. Oh poo. :(

Hopefully they sell well, then next up maybe we can look forward to Hoth baseplates.

Is the IR signal just not strong enough? What's the issue with tunnels.... line of sight?

Not only that. Disappointing to not see any new track pack format. Per page 63, I was really hoping we'd have some way to buy straight track withOUT having to pay for flexi-track along with it. :( Nope.

Why not just study the set inventory as listed on Bricklink, Brickset, etc.?
-
It's too bad they don't make road baseplates without the 6-stud deep "set back". It would be much more convenient to be able to butt a road plate up directly against the sidewalk of the modular buildings.
-
For those of you that started with 9v and then eventually switched to PF, did you guys combine all your track together? (Since PF will run just fine on old and new track)

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Bricklink it. I just did mine that way recently (BL+PaB+BnP). Relative costs looked like this: orig. MSRP < piece-together cost <<< current market value -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Don't underestimate the power of Cafe Corner. It is truly impressive once built and sitting on your table in front of you. -
Why on earth did you bother with those? They are basically hidden, especially the 5 that go under the roof panels. You could've used any color you want for those.
-
What are these "boxes" you guys speak of? Are you saying we can order/purchase entire boxes of pieces from the PAB wall? (I've never heard of this)
-
Roughly speaking, the Bricks n' Pieces system has about 80-90% of the parts available for MS, CC and GG. But PAB has a lot less, probably less than 50%. Ideally you want to use both systems. BnP for the harder to get items, and PAB for the slightly lower price on some bulk items (large bricks, etc.). You pay a nominal shipping fee for BnP orders and no vip points, but they tend to ship faster. PAB orders are slow these days but count towards the free shipping minimum and you get vip points.
-
I was in there the other day and struggled between Haunted House vs. Town Hall. In the end went with TH. Took advantage of some accumulated VIP points, and the double points promotion. I still struggle with the SSD though. I haven't bought one yet and not sure if I will. I just find the CDN msrp unjustifiable at $500. Crazy price and unfavorable price/piece ratio (0.16) relative to most other large sets. (Although I know there'd be regret if I wait, it retires and then goes for a lot more). I wish that damn set would go on sale. (50% off May 4 promo... please Lego, please?)

The grooved 1x2 brick (a key element) is much cheaper in sand blue than sand green, and the 1x8 bricks don't appear to be available at all in sand blue (so you'd still be doing a substitution with 1x2, 1x4 and 1x6 either way). I would think overall your cost would be less to BL a blue grocer.
