MOD: 7938 retrofitted into a “Best-of-Both-Worlds” Train
AussieJimbo replied to Toastie's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Great work, Toastie. The auto-charging from powered track is a brilliant idea. :classic: -
Cheers fluffybunny. I'd say you'd get close to 3 coaches in front of the station building itself (it's 72 studs long) but the platform is longer than the building anyway. Thanks LGG. Trouble is if I'd called this one the "Large" station I'd have to reach for even grander superlatives when I add the module on the other side of the central section. *grin* :classic:

Cheers pinioncorp. Glad you like it. I didn't realise they had those pieces in so many colours. To be honest I would pick light grey anyway as I'm very used to seeing corrugated iron roofing and I'd want a different colour to reflect the change of material from tile to tin. Nice to know there are so many options out there though, I've only got them in light grey and yellow. :classic:

Thanks mate. I'm really happy with how it's turned out. It's access for a truck to reverse into the loading dock to pick up and drop off goods and parcels, etc. Don't worry, you'll see some interiors eventually. ;-) :classic:

Nice one. Those mostly-opaque bags make things a bit tricky. :classic:

Superb job, Alywin. So many great details. :classic:

Yeah, that is a pretty good estimate balancing things out. I've actually opened seven ATH's to date; the 3 I bought a while back as scenery with a mind to this later project and another 4 since I got started. There are seven beige framed doors in the station right now (two nabbed from the signal box and the stair tower was taken apart for doors and bricks as well). I probably have enough roofing left for the next module and I've got plenty of white bricks but I've got one more ATH waiting. I'll need more grey bricks, red and white plates and the extra door frame. I'll probably switch to a few multiples of the log cabin next because it has the same door/window frames and the bricks and roof look promising for goods and maintenance sheds and other outbuildings. There are also lots of train station sets (internal and external floors and platforms, black foundations, misc plates and grey) and level crossing sets (awnings, tin roofing) and miscellaneous other pieces like the red roller door carefully borrowed from the modular fire station. :classic:

Thanks TW, I'm loving LightningTiger's work too, I want all of his buildings in my town. The comparison is a privilege. Have you had a guess yet how many ATH's have gone into this build so far, leaving aside all the other bits and pieces? It was nice to find out I can get a few more of those nice beige door and window frames from the log cabin sets. :classic:

Cheers L@go. Yeah it has turned out to be a huge project, it's certainly my biggest ever Lego model. I'll get some shots sooner or later of the station in my temporary "on the floor" layout. Longer term I want to fit this into one of those nicely detailed town scenes. I'm going to try some of those open back thin modular city house/city corner buildings at some stage. My next project can't be as brick intensive as this one. *eek* :classic:

Looks good. The challenge would be getting a motorised 3 axle bogey to drive it. Has anyone built one that works yet? Looks like you might just have room for a battery box if you didn't want to see inside the cab but maybe this one is more suited to being non-motorised and pushed from behind with the loco in a wagon approach. :classic:

Nice train, Murdoch. The combination of wagons works well. :classic:

Thanks LS for being so complimentary. Your comments are much appreciated. :classic:

Over the last few days I've been finishing off the second module in my train station build. I've continued to use Cooma railway station for inspiration, loosely basing this stage of the design on the "up" end of the building. This module ended up being a little longer than the first, coming out at 40 studs long and includes a large baggage room, loading dock, small office and another room that may serve as a cafe or lunch room for the staff. No furniture yet, I'll be going back and doing some interior details and gardening once I've finished the module for the other end of the station. Here's a reminder of how Cooma station looks today. So far my model is similar to the right hand two thirds of this pic. (Small copy of CMR's image hosted on my site, click link below for original.) http://www.cmrailway.org.au/coomastation.htm With that introduction, I'm pleased to present these photos of my expanded railway station: Large Large This shot provided a good reference for the build: (Small copy of CMR's image hosted on my site, click link below for original.) http://www.cmrailway.org.au/coomastation.htm I changed the end section with the car outside into a covered loading dock with roller door. Large Large Large Large Large Large Click images for Medium versions or the links below for Large. As always any suggestions for tweaks and improvements gladly received. For a start I need to go back and make a few updates to the first module (new foundations with one layer of black, small red stripe in rear gable, swap to dark grey 2x2 plate on chimnies.) but I'm pretty happy with how everything fits together already. I hope you like it too. :classic:

Hi Geertos13, you've found a nice way to do the boiler without curved tiles but the top would look better with them. I'm guessing you don't the pieces to do that right now so well done making do with the bricks you've got. :classic:

MOC: Signal Box with playable lever frame
AussieJimbo replied to AussieJimbo's topic in LEGO Train Tech
OK, here are a few updated shots with the lever frame recessed into the floor like it should be. Large Large Large Pics of the expanded station are on the way. :classic: -
A quick post at this late hour to report completion of the second module of the railway station. It's looking great joined up with the first module but has brought home just how big this station will end up being. The two module building is now 72 studs long with another 32 stud module to come on the other side of the centre section. It's easily the largest Lego building I've ever made. Still no furniture or accessories, I'm having too much fun getting the structures done. I've also finished building the lever frame into the floor of the signal box for a much more realistic look. Pics of both tomorrow. Happy builder off for some rest. :classic:

Excellent collection of trucks Selander. That smart-car transporter is great. I also like that Shell tanker in your signature. :classic:

What a great microfig scale creation. Very well done. :classic:

Nice one, Sava. You've achieved some great details with your SNOT techniques. :classic:

Good to see another building on the go, LT. I'm sure this will be another great addition. :classic:

Well I couldn't help myself and bought another two ATH's today so I could keep on building. No time for photos tonight but I'm pleased to report completion of the roof of the second module that will complete the right hand side of the station (looking from the track side). This section will contain the station master's office, a baggage room and a loading dock. Loosely based on the right-hand end of this pic... ...and the left hand-end of this one. Look out for my Medium-sized Railway Station soon. :classic:

Exclusive Train 10219 Maersk Train (Exclusive 2011)
AussieJimbo replied to paul_delahaye's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I agree. I sympathise with the fans of the 9V system and appreciate their genuine concerns but from the perspective of someone getting on board at the tail end of the RC era I've got to say Lego are showing real commitment to the theme. I like all the RC and PF sets they've released plus they've put together a new train station and level crossing, flexi-track (pros and cons aside), the Emerald, that great tram and now this. We need to get on to our local shops to encourage them to stock some track and the combo pack if it is produced by Lego. I think the Emerald Night Combo was K10194 to designate the extra parts so we may be looking for a K10219 part number for this one. My EN is powered by a Technic Bulldozer XL motor from a few years back, I could well be losing the other one to this awesome new Maersk train. :classic:- 379 replies

Thanks everyone. My pleasure, squire. Many thanks, LT. I'm glad you like the floor and the feel of the design. I generally prefer a studded floor for playability but with the lack of other interior detail so far and enough tiles left over I thought I'd give it a go. Given your skill in this area I thought you might have some ideas. A few things it certainly needs are a route map on the wall, clock(s), seating, one of those TV tiles, a computer for the ticket office and in the waiting area for Internet and maybe some printed timetable stickers. I'd value any other suggestions you might have. Cheers Tony. I've seen some of your great work really so I really appreciate your comments. I particularly liked the way the strip worked when I built it into the support columns. My original stair tower/ticket office was in some ways a strange little building to kick things off with but was really useful in establishing a few of the design cues that would help the future buildings relate to the existing 7937 sets and each other. The red pinstripe looked good on the on the Apple Tree House main model so I kept it but for some reason that set has the windows too high, at minifig head height. From the platform side point of view, I had to reduce the grey layer by a brick to match the 7937 platform walls and the white layer by 2 plates to bring it the windows to a correct height. It does prove quite intensive in white plates though to keep all the levels right, twice as may white ones as red ones to get the job done. However it's worth it to tie in with the 7937 sets and the first floor stripe (2nd floor for my US friends) and the repetition of the grey and beige layers on the signal box and it's stairs and balcony. I've got to thank Lego for their nice colour selection on the Apple Tree House which, along with 7937, has proven to be a great source set for parts and ideas for this project. I have five of them so far *eek* mainly because I'm chewing through grey for those two and a third brick high foundations plus the other grey layers and lapping up those nice beige framed windows. I can realistically see myself needing at least 4 or 5 more to finish a two story mainline station which is why I'm looking to pick up a few from Amazon but a local sale may sway me to but a few more locally and add the next two modules to this single story one. My modular Fire Station has been taunting me with it's masses of grey bricks, knowing full well that I can't bring myself to pull it down for parts. Might grab a duplicate online if I can find a good price. Any other set suggestions for good hauls of grey bricks and 1x? white plates? :classic:
