I see a couple possibilities PF2 and PF1 will both exist, PF2 for small/and or educational sets, PF1 for non smart sets that need more power, but have a relay type device that can use the PF2 controller, to control PF1 devices in place of an IR receiver/switch. - HAve an 9v and 3v version of PF2, with each using different pairs on the 6 wire cable to stop stuff blowing up. - Have all PF2 stuff be 3 v but drawing a much higher current than PF1, and release a second larger control box/battery that uses 3 pairs of 2x1.5 batts in parallel for more current, and with more connectors. A big downside to a low voltage, high current system, is that cable length will start reducing power to a connected device, so I'm hoping an 9v PPF2 will exist, or that PF1 will still life on for appropriate sets.

60052 Cargo Train vs. 60098 Heavy-Haul Train?
Riley-NZL replied to wgemini's topic in LEGO Train Tech
IMO, 60052 is the better set, nicer looking train, more track (has a small siding as well as a loop) and the gantry crane has more play value then the crane in the 60098 set. -
Enhanced Cargo Crane (Set 60052)

Did you buy a second set to make it, or just use/buy extra parts? -

You probably need a third too, so you can build the B model, and have the BME and mobile conveyor built feeding directly into the aggregate crasher..... -
I'd be happy with just some extra accessories sets, like extra carriages fro existing trains, or track side/track crossing stuff.

Enhanced Cargo Crane (Set 60052)

I like it! I have this set and 100% agree it's a bit small to be usable. If I was to do something like this, I'd probably leave it at one track one, and leave more room for trucks, and containers to be stacked. -
Do they make different strength clutch gears? Althoguh taking the clutch gear out might get you more lifting power, it does increase the chance of stripped gears or a burned out motor.

42055 - Bucket Wheel Excavator

Definitely getting this set, little disappointing that there isn't less manual functions, but I guess they probably had a target price point to squeeze it into. If you bought two sets, you could easily build mobile conveyor to go with it :P Also would have been a prime set to go with double wide tracks. -
Clutch gear? How do you know the motor/pulley is not the restriction? I can't see in your video if you have modified the boom lifting winch at all, but I found as stock this is a week point. The weakest point as stock, is easily that it doesn't have enough counter weight, which you seem to have addressed.

Hey guys, This is my first Technic set, and I think it's started a new addiction. I've also never modded, or created my own set before; however I'm looking at buying a second one of these to make some improvements with. Also, sorry in advance, not sure the correct anme for Technic parts :P A couple small improvements I've made by sacrificing the small (seems strange saying that) yellow wrecking ball crane from the LEGO city set: Changed the angle of the mast slightly to allow the boom to come up to a higher angle, also removed the 3rd "Wheel" on the winch mechanism as it's kind of redundant. Probably going to get rid of the black ball tie of point, and just tie it straight to the winch beam: Added an extra pulley set to the main winch, to increase thew winch lift capacity. The pulleys had to much friction, so I changed the three wide pin things to the + profile rod things: Same on the "hook", also changed the 3 wide pins, to a bit that has one wide pin, and two wide + profile. I need to build a hook at some point : Used to only lift two of those containers before change this, probably could lift a 4th as well if I had one: My plans if I where to get a second set would be to increase the main boom by two sections, and build a small luffing jib. Then add the second battery box behind the current one as counterweight, and hopefully extend the body work by the same length. Change the boom lifting pulley to be a floating mast with the pulley moving the mast instead (as shown by Duke). Vassel, on your luffing jib, have you added another pulley to move the the angle, or is it manually operated?

Here is the one that the currently use: There is also a lot of non functioning ones around, decades ago a lot of Steam trains where buried here to protect the coast line from erosion, a lot of these are now being dug up and restored to some degree:

Thanks Dan-147, I'm not sure how far I'll go, but would like to at-least try get some lights on the 60052. I'm a bit limited on what I can do as there doesn't seem to be any sizable brick sellers here in New Zealand, any suggestions on good sites that will ship internationally? I'd also really like to build some more wagons/cargo as I fell the 2-3 wagons per train doesn't look right, and I think a wee depot full of the Maersk style containers would look great as well. Hoping Lego will release another dock set one day or I might have a go at building something like that myself.

Love it! Big improvement over the old design too. They have a couple locomotives about that size running a small tourist train where I live.

Hi guy's, from New Zealand. Used to love Lego as a kid, but never got to own a train set. Now I'm an adult (kinda), I'm making up for it, having gone from zero, to four trains in the space of a month. Unfortunately I'm limited to the space on the floor of my bedrooms, which will hopefully change next year. Here's the first two, both current Lego city cargo trains: I received the Lego city passenger train a few days ago, and last night purchased the set I'm most excited for, the Maersk Cargo train. Unfortunately I'm away all next week so won't be home when it arrives 8-(
