  1. I don't know much about the Ninjago sets, but I know in lego City sets, the "unique" mini-fig's in the expensive sets are intentionally always released in a cheap set as well.
  2. Very cool, any chances of getting a close up of the hook? Love the counterweight :P
  3. Where has this been proven? Very clever :P
  4. Might have to try make an NZ army style one of these:
  5. LED lighting is fine, but will need more softening to produce the same quality of light, it's generally a much smaller/brighter light source then other forms of light. RGB LEDS are the worst thing in the world to try and use for photos unless properly softened, as then tend to create three distinctly colored shadows otherwise.
  6. Maybe they just decide the parts aren't useful? Maybe they just only use parts that they need for a set, no point in adding random parts onto a set just to make the parts "not rare"
  7. I bought an 42042 for $218 (NZD), they went on sale a couple days later for $180. I then wanted a second set, but being paid monthly meant I missed getting the second one on sale as well by a few days.
  8. Thanks for info guys. Also on the clutch gear, another way to increase lift but still have clutch gear is to have one stage of gear ratio reduction, before the clutch gear, for example, i think the original design the shaft out of the motor directly feeds the clutch gear. You could instead feed tyhe clutch gear with a small cog. Would have to be careful not to do to much reduction before the clutch, as then it won't do anything at all. (or just don't put a clutch gear in at all)
  9. I've found the NZ Bricklink sites to be pretty light on parts, the store I bought my 1x16 links from bought one of these sets just so they could sell me them (was very nice of them). Are there any Australian stores you could recommend with a good inventory of Technic parts?
  10. Made some improvements to the main boom design, the original designs gives up strength for modularity. Only every second "square" in the boom had a diagonal liftarm, meaning every second second "square" was weak, and the alternating squares strong. This was cuasing a fair bit of bend: Changing the design and adding diagonal lift arms the whole way up made it much stronger; the downside being you can't easily add/remove sections: So how many of this set do you think I would need to purchase to make something like this (dual booms/Jibs/Masts the whole way up): My guess is 12-14 sets :P Although the Bucket Wheel Excavator set might be better for parts, and then it could be in yellow :P
  11. I would look at how the track driving axle is sent forward and use a similar system, it may also be possible to change one of the axles that the red selector gears are running on, for a longer axle that sicks out the front of the gearbox? Good to know, if you where really worried and still wanted the clutch gear, you could do what it looks like they have on the Bucket Wheel excavator set, and have two clutch on the axles, and the main shaft out of the motor have two driving gears, thus the load is split between the two clutch gears.
  12. Still a few parts to arrive to tidy off the last bits, namely the 16x1 link beams, but I got some thread today so was able to rig up the luffing jib and hook: At full height, 125cm high and about 35cm reach from the centre of the tracks: Boom still up, but with Jib out, 90cm high and 60cm reach: And at full reach, this reach could be extended, but I'm still using the orginal lego string for moving the boom, 75cm high and 90cm reach: Last things to do is replace the grey and blue 1x15 lift arms with the 1x16 grey link beams, and work out a tidy solution for counter weight. Also going to tidy up the main boom's mast using some 5x11 Frames
  13. They are from the Maersk Train Set, released a few years ago. I've seen some on Ebay but they tend to be pretty expensive. I've been thinking about trying to make some more myself, I could try list the parts from the instruction booklet if you like?
  14. That's pretty cool, probably make the Health and Safety people happy as well, they are certainly "hi-vis".
  15. Cheers, it helps having a camera that can shoot at pretty much any ISO and still look good. When it's all done I'll probably try do either some environmental or studio type shots.
  16. Surely they could have just donated whatever it cost to paint all there trucks (probably thousands), and would ahve made more money for Breast Cancer then painting the trucks would have. Still, at least they are doing something.
  17. I think Technic colors tend be based on the item they are creating, for example I don't think I've ever seen a pink BWE before. If they wanted Technic to be more appealing to females, they would probably be better to change the type of sets they make, for example, not that many females (I'm sure there are some though) get excited about cranes/trucks, and for the ones that do, good on em.
  18. A metal track might stand up better, but would still have potential for rust. Will it be covered outside, or fully exposed?
  19. Progress is slowing a bit as I'm finding myself running out of bits etc, made my first ever Bricklink order today, but struggling to find enough 1x16 beam link thingies. Got the gear box for winch built, it's a big mess, and will probably make some of you cry, but it mostly works (haven't figured out where to place the lever to operate the clutch/forward/reverse bit yet): Also started some bodywork around the back bit (batteries are in there as counter weight for the moment), as before, all the strings of blue and grey link arms are temporary while I wait for more 1x16 links, and to find some where that sells string that will work:
  20. Damn, don't have a car either... Could sell my motor bike, but then I wouldn't have anyway to get these big sets home. Seeing as I'm an organ donor, and ride a motorbike, I could maybe sell my organs "in advance"? I'd sell my older sister, but I actually get on well with her, maybe my younger brother, he's pretty useless? :P I can't see how it would struggle, the Crawler crane 40042 uses a single L motor for it's tracks, and although it's probably a bit lighter then the BEW, they are incredibly strong, I've used the crawler cranes tracks to pull the crane + two large lego boats and pretty much everything else I could find that I could chain on to it all at once.
  21. I was thinking the centre shaft would go through to the tracks and the outside side ones to a small gear each on each side of the turntable? Then again, with the much slower movement, I'm guessing that means more torque through to the tracks, and needing two shafts could be entirely possible.
  22. How many powered wheels? Adding more motor power then your powered wheel have friction will just end up in spinning wheels. I also can't imagine a system long enough for 16 XL motors getting around corners?
  23. Damn, I don't have a wife or children.... I'm screwed.
  24. Progress report: Main boom extended by two sections, jib built, and jib masts started. The join between the main boom, and jib was probably the hardest bit. The two grey Technic beams are temporary until I build a winch for them. My first set came with one spare of the long grey support things with a barrel join at each, so I was expecting the second set too as well......turns out it didn't so I'm one short at the moment. Did anyone else set come with an extra one of these? Still to do: Rebuild the main boom's mast Build a counter weight, and hopefully build a third winch into it somewhere. Build the pulley system between the jib boom. Look at extending/widening the tracks slightly If anyone has any ideas/suggestions would love to hear them. Also are there any cheap sets that contain one of those grey long tension supports with the barrel joins at each end? (I have two yellow ones)
