Definitely. Especially compared to Nexo Knights, the "Pirates 2015"-line is a complete masterpiece.

General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread

You can always pretend they have hepatitis or been exposed in sun for very long in the Caribbean, while the yellow-faced dudes spent too much of their time in the basements in England drinking vodka. -
Buying Pirate LEGO - where to buy, advice, tips and questions
AViewToALego replied to Mr. Smee's topic in LEGO Pirates
I would rather buy a cheap official LEGO impulse set, than a large set from a cheap knockoff brand. Enlighten is downright awful - and - The only knockoff that comes somewhat close to approaching quality, is the Hasbro stuff, and even that is just not enough for my taste (but not for want of trying). It's your money though. But I just wish no-one would support these awful clones. Plus, the shipping will probably get expensive anyway.- 502 replies

Too young to remember exactly, but I think It was either Raft Raiders or Pirate's Plunder (I got two of those so that's where I got my first two redcoates). This was during a time when the internet was very new and expensive, so as a kid, you didn't knew what other sets you could get if you didn't have the catalogue (I only had the ones for 1992 and onwards). In my case, I didn't even knew the bluecoats existed. I actually got confused when I was at a friends house searching through his box of lego, because I found an imperial torso and noticed that the torso was exactly like my redcoat one, except, it was blue! Was it misprinted or what? In years that really bothered me, until I grew up with the internet and found out about the Caribbean Clipper. Imagine my surprise. I didn't know there was a bluecoat fraction before the redcoat one. Ah, these were the days...

Nice. I also thought about getting the 6273 recently, only reason I didn't (through careful considerations) is the baseplate. I really hate the ramp. I think the biggest mistake they did when they designed the mold, was to not having studs on the ramp. I have two sets with the raised baseplates and the ramp is a big issue for both of them. Comparing Forbidden Island with Rock Island Refugee is interesting, at first I saw Forbidden Island as the Inferior "little brother". But since the baseplate is easier to take advantage of, and despite being smaller and more "airy", I think it's slightly better than Rock Island. However, Rock Island is a much bigger set with several minifigures, two baseplates and offers a lot of playability (although severely hampered by the ramp). Believe me, I'm always tempted to get it, but the ramp is just too off-putting. -
One of the sets I got when I was just a little kid. It's unique in a way that they switched the pegleg of the captain with one of the sailors. I have thought about that, and I think it was a last-minute change to add versatility (although you could easily switch peglegs if you want...).

I think durazno33 on Classic Castle described it best when he said "the sets look like something Mega Blocks would come up with.". But the dark-blue"1x1x1/3 quadruple slope" and the King minifigure is still interesting. Will propably pick some of these from blicklink. But buying the entire sets? NO, thanks.

VIDEO Review: 70411 Treasure Island - AWESOME!
AViewToALego replied to Bricks Planet's topic in LEGO Pirates
This is arguably the best set of the 2015-line. The design is very clever and smart, they managed to make it bulky and stable without a baseplate, and the skull is an old idea, revamped and put to good use here. There are some nifty little details, like the Banana-Three, the openable skull and the small door on the back. There are quite a lot of accessories with this one; You get a cannon, a map, a parrot, an alligator, pirate flag, small swivel gun, some plant pieces, chains, fire and quite a lot of guns. However, I'm not sure, but in Shipwreck Defense you get 2 muskets, 3 small guns and some swords, but in this one you only get 1 musket, and (I think), 2 blunderbusses, which is a bit of a letdown, consider this is a bigger set and with more minifigures. But apart from that, this is a brilliant set and a good example of how to combine play elements with design. -
This set is a perfect example of what happens when you try to design a bigger set without baseplate. While Treasure Island and Shipwreck Defense somewhat worked without a baseplate, this clearly doesn't. Also, it's kinda cramped, it's a good partspack, and a good variety of minifigs, but that's it. The build is very strange. It looks like it would never survive any heavy storm, but rather collapse into the sea. It's very "airy". To me, Treasure Island and Shipwreck Defense are the smartest and most valuable sets so far. Imperial Outpost is good, but is hampered by the fact that there's only one complete bluecoats, the other one being an Officer.

Thanks to a very generous discount on my local store, I could easily stock up on some 41015 Dolphin Cruisers just in case I need the white prefab hull's for MOCing in the future. I have noticed the brickprice is very low on BL, even when NEW. But given the fact that the DC has been out there on the shelf since 2013, that makes sense. Maybe they will get more expensive when it goes out of line. I'm planning to snag some of those before the price rises. The orange "steampunk-ish pirate" looks OK to me. There is potential for some really rugged, dirty and bastardy gang of outlaws, hiding in the jungle, waiting patiently to ambush the bluecoats. Seems like they would suit well on board the Red Beard Runner.

I finally got my hands on the Black Seas Barracuda. I already had a MOC with the original 5 red-striped sails, so I wasn't keen on getting it, but now, once I've got it, I have no regrets at all. The ship look much better than on the pictures, especially the stern, I thought it looked too narrow, but now when I'm looking at it at home, it's perfect. It's a very stable, solid ship that can easily be moved around without falling apart. There are so many hatches and clips to put weapons and the rigging is perfect. No matter how you review it: It's a masterpiece. No wonder LEGO plays safe and release a BSB-inspired ships every time a new pirate wave is introduced. What impresses me most is that it's their first ship. 26 years later and they still haven't released a Pirate Ship that can quite match it. -
I like the fact it's a cheap polybag set, seems like a good pirate army builder and some extra wheels for future MOC's. Keep bricking aaarrr!

If that's the case for you, then I'm afraid we're both crazy! -
I'm not annoyed by Aanchir's post, I'm annoyed that the movie was a box office failure.
-
This always annoyed me to no end! Cutthroat Island is a very underrated movie, and it didn't fail because it was bad, it failed because people wasn't interested in pirate movies at the times. It's a huge shame, not only for LEGO pirate fans, but also for swashbuckling adventurers like me. The marketing must have been awful. "Out of sight, out of mind" as they say it.

This one?

Speaking of chess sets, is there still issues with chinese plastic or has it been fixed since the previous release?
-
I think you should buy it, the pleasant of opening a huge box with lots of shining new pieces and slowly build up, overwhelms any sense of spending regrets - At least is does so for me. And it's always nice to have a new ship to add to your collection, or MOC, I can't describe the words of it - It's just a very pleasant healing process for me.
-
Let me just use my first post by saying this: This ship is not particularly great or groundbreaking - BUT - in on area it really shines - It's great for MOCing. For example, I've had a spare Stern piece (2559c03) which I now can finaly use, that gives the ship the potential to grew the lenght of a Black Seas Barracuda. The fixed Cannons is a dissapointment, but then again, here you have a lot of potential to fix it by rearrange the deck and put on some wheels for the cannons - The classic way. The hideout for the Chest is a very clever idea, and I think the fact that we get some bluecoats is great in case you need to extend your Imperial army. Actually, the cabins are one of the few things that are better with the later ships compared to the old ones. The classic ships had less detailed cabins that were harder to reach and less detailed. This is something that TLG really improved on. And I really applause that. No exceptions here! Yes, we get a chef, but no galley. So why not build one? It's all up to your imagination! Since it uses the new two-part hull at the bow, I think it's easier to make room for stuff there and (perhaps) even construct a galley around the bow. I also like the chain mechanism of the anchor and the cabin. They are very well put together, even though It looks a bit back heavy and boxy at the stern. But it doesn't bother me too much. The main problem though is the crane with the way-too-short chain hanging down. They could of put some more effort there. But then again, easy fix.
