In my opinion, yes, this is a golden age for Lego. Modern sets show some great building techniques employing SNOT etc for detailing. Modular buildings have amazing details and bring pieces that expand the system rather than large unique pieces - eg new windows. The creator line has had some fantastic sets in recent years Sets like - shuttle adventure/expedition - VW Camper - maersk train - emerald night - sopwith Camel - tower bridge - the entire modular building range - Star Wars Imperial shuttle Are all modern classics IMO.

It's a crawler. I'm happy to see a motor on axle approach, that *is* authentic to the model crawlers they are trying to replicate in Lego. Likewise with the body - the way it unhooks to give easy access to the battery box, and the B model basically being a replacement shell again suggests they are looking at RC models rather than real cars for inspiration. It isn't trying to be a real car, so doesnt need an engine under the hood.

[REVIEW] 9398 - Rock Crawler
mrklaw replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Oh god, day one. Fantastic review and a great looking set. I'd recently pared down my technic to just 8043, but this is a must have. We have a couple of RC crawlers in the house, including a Losi mini rock crawler which is a lot of fun. I'm pleasantly surprised Lego really went for it. Motor on axle build, new servo, 4ws. Really nice. Could have hoped for remote lockable duffs, but that's just being greedy :) Do we have any indication on she this will be available? -
I certainly would have. I'm missing town hall from my modulars and the primary reason is price (plus I don't love it quite enough to push me over the edge). At pet shop pricing, the haunted house was a day 1 buy (I'd have preordered if Lego let me). But at town hall pricing I'm not so sure. Plus it needs a garden so that's more expense ;) It's not just a minor increase, IMO the bump from £119 to £149 takes it into a completely different bracket. £119 is nice premium set territory (most modulars, maersk train, VW van, nsopwith camel, shuttle) are all £80-120. £150 starts edging towards huge SW UCS pricing, or tower bridge. Much more of a considered purchase. Also, simply applying logic doesn't work either. As mentioned before, it's the same parts count as pet shop, but way more expensive. Or the same price as town hall, but with way less parts. Neither fits

eBay user sells instructions for other builder's MOCs
mrklaw replied to Badsneaker's topic in LEGO Town
Devils advocate, but what if people are inspired by your building and want to make their own? They aren't copying anything because no original instructions exist, and there may be demand in the market for them. Have you considered making your own, or perhaps working with someone and sharing the proceeds? -
An internet tale Winchester/Shaun of the Dead project on CUUSOO

Wow, very comprehensive package. don't suppose you can do a bricklink compatible XML? :p Did you get anywhere with the bricklink superlots idea? -
Will this be Lego.com and Lego store exclusive? If so it makes the likelihood of sales much lower than if it was available on amazon for instance

Just finishing up my build. Does anyone else have quite dark/grey round tiles?nthey are shown innthe instructions with a sparkle as they should be metallic, but mine are a slightly glossy dark bley. (P.S Lego, please use something other than a tiny sparkle graphic to show these pieces. Is very easy to ignore it as a printing error/smudge) Some of the steps seem out of sync. I wish they'd have you add the ailerons to the bottom wing earlier on - I was a bit uncomfortable turning the plane over to press those pieces in

i keep seeing that apple tree house on offer. Last time I bought the lighthouse instead.

If you file a complaint just don't mention the UK price. Don't want them increasing the price there

Argh, if only I'd known a couple of days ago, before spending £15 on a t-rex from bricklink. Bought the trex helicopter set and raptor jeep set anyway. Shame they are out of stock of the log cabin Edit - and the triceratops set. So that's t-Rex hunter, triceratops trapper and raptor Chase for the same cost as the RRP for Dino defence HQ. nice :)

You can get away with self adhesive printer labels, or better - waterside decals. See info here - Waterside decal thread
-
thanks I've just bought some clear and white decal paper, and KEEN acrylic spray, from crafty computer paper. So I'll use that to seal in the decal after printing, and after application. Curious about the klear though. I've heard of that being used with RC cars as a clear coat equivalent, but does it work as an adhesive too?

Shaun of the Dead / Winchester CUUSOO project - on Bricklink?
mrklaw replied to Yatkuu's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
This is too cool. Definitely looking forward to the instructions and superlots, if the price isn't prohibitive I'm in :) -
for a 1x1 tile you just need to draw an 8x8mm square in paint or whatever, and print it out so its not scaled. other tiles are just multiples of that - so 2x2 would be 16x16mm.

take a look in the trains forum, I've seen it done - I think you can add a PF train motor under one of the carriages fairly easily.
-
Just curious - was the Emerald Night released before the PF train motor was available, nwhich is why they went with the XL motor option? Otherwise it seems that a PF train motor in the tender would have been fairly straightforward. I am quite surprised that the N is such a beautifully designed set, yet they don't even bother trying to hide the battery box in the tender
-
Hope you don't mind the bump.. Just built my recently purchased EN and want to power it. I have all the parts except the XL motor - I have spare medium motors from 8043 excavator though. Will they work or will I need to buy an XL motor?

Couldn't have put it better myself. I don't care for the monster fighter theme at all,nut I'm a fan of modulars. As soon as I saw this I was thinking how to integrate it with my modulars. Like you say, it can be 'the scary house' that lots of neighbourhoods have when you're a kid, or renovate it. I probably won't turn it into a modular, I like the hinged approach, but I agree others will do that quickly.

Rebrickable.com
mrklaw replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
just been catching up and getting my inventory roughly up to date (still waiting on big ben, R2D2 and sopwith camel). Is there a way to do an export of all pieces you have? I.e a combination of all pieces from 'my sets' + all pieces in 'my parts'? -
Is the pricing wacky again? In the uk it's the same price as the pet shop, 20% less than UCS R2.
-
Bonus house to live in modular town. Lots of pieces, ok price. Lots of modding potential - tweak into a non-haunted house, add an overgrown garden and spooky tree, more interior features. As it'd need to be a standalone element ia town layout I even quite like the fold out approach

How do I export a list of parts from brickstore to bricklink, keeping the quantity intact? I've added the quantity in brickstore, the quantity tag is there in the XML <QTY>, but when I import it, it doesn't set the minimum quantity. edit: figured it out. Brickstore is mainly for uploading inventories for stores, and uses the <QTY> tag. For wanted lists on bricklink, you need the <MINQTY> tag to show how many you're looking for. A quick find/replace in wordpad and its all good.

How about the Tram from 8404 Public Transport? That's what we have running in front of our short modular street:
