How to increase quality in POV-Ray?
C3POwen replied to Doc_Brown's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
No problem! This is something I've been meaning to fix for a little while, but just haven't gotten around to it. Ultimately, the transparency settings are not right for POV-Ray 3.7, and transparent parts are too transparent. If you'd like to fix this yourself, just open the "lg_color.inc" file in Notepad and locate the following section: /*************************************/ /* VARIABLES FOR TRANSPARENT COLOURS */ /*************************************/ // NORMAL TRANSPARENT #declare TransFilter = 0.9; #declare TransTransmit = 0.1; // NEON TRANSPARENT #declare NeonFilter = 0.5; #declare NeonTransmit = 0.3; Just change the TransTransmit value to 0, save the file, and then try rendering again. You could also adjust the TransFilter option a bit -- maybe to something like 0.95 -- if it looks too bright. Alternatively, I've made a small update to my LGEO-Update.zip file, so you could just download and install that. The "lg_color.inc" file contained also has some minor updates to the metallic colours. It's not perfect, and I think I need to spend some more time tinkering with some of the colour options. -
How to increase quality in POV-Ray?
C3POwen replied to Doc_Brown's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
This is from the current POV-Ray documentation on anti-aliasing options, specifically the Antialias_Threshold value: The gist of this is that Antialias_Threshold=0.0 is the highest-quality setting. Antialias_Threshold=3.0 means no anti-aliasing is done. Your problem above is that you've entered two different values for Antialias_Threshold, and POV-Ray will always work with the last option defined, which in this case is a value of 3.3 (and 3.0 is the maximum value it can actually utilise). I've not had a lot of experience with the Antialias_Depth, but I believe that the higher the number, the better the quality. For this option, the highest value you can set is 9. You can also specify a jitter option using Jitter=On, although I've not used this option before. By default this sets a jitter value of 1.0, which is the highest value available. In light of the above, the settings you're probably after are as follows: [1920x1200 16:10 AA 0.0] Width=1920 Height=1200 Antialias=On Antialias_Threshold=0.0 Antialias_Depth=9 Jitter=On POV-Ray does have an alternate sampling method for anti-aliasing, but the above should be good enough. -

In case you're interested, I have updated my LGEO Update Pack with the printed tiles for the last three Architecture sets, and these parts use the correct typeface. Although running a full render again would take a long time to do, you could always re-render the section of the image that shows the printed tile, in case you wanted to update your images. And as @Darats mentioned, the Trevi Fountain tile is now available via the LDraw Parts Tracker, and I may or may not have been the one that submitted it...

21108 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 [LEGO Ideas, 2014] MPD file [not all submodels shown, but included in file] Errors: - Missing correct printing - Missing 88704, substituted with 61975 I ran a quick search in both this thread and the corresponding LDD thread, and was surprised to see that no one had posted this yet! I would easily say that this is one of the best licensed sets that Lego has ever done, and certainly looks much better in real life than the BttF DeLorean does. In fact, I currently have Ecto-1 in pride of place on the shelf above our fireplace. Bonus points go to Lego for no spelling mistakes on the printed parts this time, although the booklet doesn't fare so well. The "IIn" error below appears on the first page of both the printed and PDF versions... Thank you very much!

21019 The Eiffel Tower [Architecture, 2014] MPD file (26 KB) Errors: None It's been quite a while since I've posted anything to Eurobricks (or been involved with the LDraw community), but with a huge outpouring of new instructions from LEGO.com, I felt a need to get my digital brick fix. I'm hoping to get some of the new Creator sets posted shortly and have started working on some more LGEO parts too.

It is indeed an issue with the LGEO part. When I'm creating new parts, I often set certain cylinders to a different colour for troubleshooting reasons, and it seems Lutz Uhlmann did the same when creating this part back in 2008. (Funnily enough, I tend to use green as well!) I've fixed the green edge issue and you can download the updated part below. I've not included it in the full LGEO Update Pack, but will do so in the next update. Download: lg_30407.inc

GUIDE UPDATE: I have updated the LGEO-Update.zip file in the Downloads section with 12 new parts, 4 updated parts and 1 fixed part. The FIXED, UPDATED and NEW LGEO parts from the 2014-02-10 update Something I'd been wanting to do for a while (and always had trouble with) was add the rounded corners to the 1x1 and 1x2 "cheese" slopes, as the squared corners always bothered me. Although not perfect, the updated versions included here don't look too bad. The personal highlight of the update for me is "33291 Plate 1 x 1 Round with Tabs". Up close, it has turned out looking pretty good! It also shows off something I've been working on - a small join between the top surface and the stud. This now shows by default for all solid studs, although not for all hollow studs as it could cause issues where the join protrudes from a part (99206 being a case in point). This is something that would need to be done on a per-part basis, so would be quite time-consuming.

5550 Custom Rally Van (Model A) [Model Team, 1991] MPD file Errors: - Missing stickers I was genuinely surprised to not see this in the index already, as I always considered it one of the better-looking Model Team sets (and one I always wanted but never got ). The giant silver spheres are purely there to make the render look a little more interesting!

GUIDE UPDATE: I have updated the LGEO-Update.zip file in the Downloads section with 30 new parts, 4 updated parts (only 3 shown) and 3 fixed parts. The FIXED, UPDATED and NEW LGEO parts from the 2014-01-16 update This update does a couple of things. It addresses some issues that LDView has when generating the POV-Ray code for the two Technic gears above. It also adds a fair few pneumatic parts, more of which I will be working on. The parts I'm most pleased with are the cannon barrel and cannon base - the barrel was built in a way in LDraw that meant that it never translated well to POV-Ray, always looking more octagonal than round, so should look a bit better now!
-
How odd! LDView shouldn't have any issues loading parts and converting them to POV-Ray if looking at the right LDraw path. On an unrelated note, I'm in the midst of some new LGEO parts, and thought that a couple of them might interest you, considering some of the sets you've built in LDraw in the past... The cannon base and cannon barrel are both new, and will be released once I'm done with a number of Technic pneumatic parts (which was requested here).
-
I suppose the first thing to ask is where is the LDraw part for the wagon cover stored? Is it stored in the standard LDraw parts folder?
