  1. I normally check BrickLink for a set's part inventory, if it's not too new, as the colour names match those of LDraw. That way you'll at least know which colours are used in a set.

  4. I've been doing a bit of reading on the gamma of the lg_color.inc file, and it looks like it may need tweaking to be able to render at different gamma settings, but will add something later for those that need it. Your settings are also almost identical to the Radiosity_Final macro included with POV-Ray, but with a few tweaks. I'll have to give them a go and see how they turn out! I think I'm going to add this to the guide, as it's a useful thing to use, rather than manually deleting the lights. Thanks, LDView Travis!
  5. Thanks, Calabar! I would say it is pretty much complete. The only other thing that could be added is a section about HDR lighting, but I've yet to get this working to my satisfaction yet. For those that are wondering what HDR lighting is, it involves creating a giant sphere around that model and mapping an image on to the sphere, and using this as part of the light source so that you get realistic-looking reflections. The test renders that I've tried this with come out with colours that look too dark and washed out, and adding extra lights does not seem to help.
  6. GUIDE UPDATE: I have added a zip file containing more new LGEO parts, as well as modified lg_color.inc and LGEO.xml files, alongside some simple instructions on how to install them.
  7. 40044 Lawnmower [Monthly Mini Model Build, June 2012] LDR file Notes: Although the instructions do not show the black tile with clip attached upside down, the promotional photos of the model do, so I have included it here.
  8. 8374 Williams F1 Team Racer [Williams F1, 2003] LDR file Errors: - Motor does not have Dark Grey colouring (missing assembly from LDraw) - Missing stickers / correct printing @konze: I like the work you've put into getting an entire subtheme built and rendered, and they've come out looking really nice. This part was actually included in the 2012-01 LDraw part update. As LDraw.org is down at the moment, if you need the visor then I've uploaded it. As I've added a section on radiosity, which is what I'm using for my current renders, it might be worth trying this out for your renders. My custom lg_color.inc file should also give you more accurate looking trans neon orange parts.
  9. GUIDE UPDATE: I have now added a section on radiosity, although there are as of yet no example images and some information needs to be added regarding floor settings. I also plan on adding render time, and have added a note at the beginning of the tutorial in regards to this. I'm also toying with changing the example model to something a bit more recent/complex. Suggestions welcome. EDIT: I think I'm going to use the tipper from 4201 Loader and Tipper. EDIT 2: I have also added some fixed and new LGEO parts to the guide.
  10. 8362 Ferrari F1 Racer [Ferrari, 2004] MPD file Errors: - Missing correct printing / stickers
  11. These were my concerns also. Although I've not submitted anything to the LDraw Parts Tracker myself, I've just started playing around with part authoring, and personally would prefer to go down the route of proper part submission. However, I know that Philo is very prolific, and he seemed quite happy to convert and post two parts for the boat hulls, so perhaps in this instance (in regards to the boat part I posted) it's not too bad.
  12. I'm not sure if a guide on how to export from LDD to LDraw would necessarily be wise, as anyone performing this would have to ensure that they are setting the part's position and centre of rotation in a way that would match that of a similar LDraw part. Otherwise, if the part is created by someone else and an official version becomes available, anything created with the unofficial part from here would then have the wrong orientation/position, messing up the model. You may also find many of the same part being submitted, with varying degrees of quality. Maybe a thread where converted parts that are not already in LDraw (or its Part Tracker) are listed for download, perhaps with a very brief guide for those who wish to submit, where submissions are verified before being added to the thread's initial post. Otherwise, perhaps a thread for requests for parts converted from LDD instead, as I've already created a fair few unoffical LDraw parts myself and don't mind doing more. Of course, the LDD part geometries are copyrighted by the LEGO Group, so there would also be nothing to stop them from requesting the removal of the proposed thread.
  13. Prompted by Calabar's post here, I thought I'd update this post instead. If no-one's created a version of 95227 yet, I have created a rough version of this part, where most of the LDraw primitives still have to be added and a lot of optimization is required. However, I have substituted the top studs of the central section with LDraw primitives so that they should work in SR 3D Builder, and it also matches the position of the other boat hull parts in the LDraw parts list. Warning: It has a very large file size for an LDraw DAT file, so may slow things down a bit. Download: DAT file
  14. 6861 Super Vehicle [blacktron II, 1991] MPD file
  15. The DAT file is for LDraw/LDView only and, like LDView Travis said, it only fixes the stud rotation. If you want a fixed LGEO part, I have modified the default "lg_2539.inc" file to rotate the entire part by 90 degrees, so should now match the official part when exporting models directly from LDView to POV-Ray. All you need to do is download the below file and save it to the "C:\Program Files\LDraw\LGEO\lg" folder (or wherever LGEO is installed), overwriting the previous version. This means you don't have to modify the LGEO.xml file, but if you reinstall LGEO, it will overwrite my modified version. DOWNLOAD: lg_2539.inc If it's useful, I can post any other "broken" LGEO files that I come across and am able to fix. The actual POV-Ray language it's written in is a bit beyond me, but I can often work out what needs to be changed to fix a file.
  16. 1969 Mini Robot [space Police II, 1993] MPD file
  17. I know this was brought up last week, but it appears that the stud orientation is correct in the LGEO file, and incorrect in LDraw. If it's of use, I've attached a zip file containing a corrected LDraw DAT file. 2539.zip
  18. As I've only modified some of the colour definitions, and not added any new ones, you don't need to download the LGEO.xml file again. If you need to download a different version again, I'll make sure it's clear.
  19. GUIDE UPDATE: I have updated the lg_color.inc file so that transparent neon colours do not appear so bright or washed out.
  20. 6896 Celestial Forager [M:Tron, 1990] MPD file The boom at the back of the vehicle can be moved on its pivot, however the container is not directly attached and the magnets will need to be re-orientated individually.
  21. Wow! Your renders have come out looking really good! What lighting settings did you go with? It might be worth posting them in the POV-Ray tutorial thread. I'd probably leave the LDR files as they are, and let people remove the minifigs if they choose to. That's why I like the MPD file format, as it allows me to keep minifigs separate from the main model.
  22. Although I can't vouch for Blackbird's settings, I've been playing around with radiosity a bit, and plan to update the guide just after this weekend (as the weather here is too nice at the moment). POV-Ray (from version 3.5 onwards) has radiosity settings built in, and some info on how to add that can be found here: http://www.povray.org/documentation/view/3.6.1/494/ You must specify the #include "rad_def.inc" at the very beginning of the file, and you must also add the global_settings too. I also suggest using the Radiosity_Fast setting when testing your renders. The results are quite good using Radiosity_Final, but I've asked @whitew0lf for some tips on his radiosity settings, as I still get some visual artefacts.
  23. 5982 Smash 'n' Grab [space Police III, 2010] MPD file (not all submodels shown, but included in file) Errors: - Missing 1x 85947pb02 Minifig Head Modified Alien with Tongue and Yellow Eyes* - Missing 1x 87781 Minifig Headgear Helmet Space [replaced with 2446 Minifig Headgear Helmet Standard] - Missing stickers / correct printing * You may be able to see him sat in the cockpit, but I'm using an unofficial part exported from LDD which is not available from the LDraw site.
  24. Probably my favourite LEGO model of the ones I own, I have it on display alongside Chewbacca and (slightly customised) Han Solo minifigs. 7778 Midi-scale Millennium Falcon [star Wars, 2009] LDR file Errors: - Missing stickers My first render testing out radiosity in POV-Ray. It's okay but not perfect. There seems to be a few visual artefacts, although these don't seem to show too badly in the resized image above. EDIT: Re-rendered with better radiosity settings.
  25. I'm sure they'll be fine. I'm going to try and get some of the radiosity stuff sorted out for this tutorial when I can -- perhaps this weekend -- as I'm a big fan of @whitew0lf's renders, and would like to get some more even lighting on my models.
