42082 - Rough Terrain Crane

I agree with what you said about the free rotation of the crane, it doesn't harm at all and it indeed quite usefull.- 1,224 replies

42082 - Rough Terrain Crane
NioN replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Finished the build last night and it's such a nice model. It's huge, has lot's of small details, looks really nice and building it was so much fun. While building it I came across some new building techniques that I haven't seen in a Technic model before. Haven't played with the functions yet but for me it's more abut the looks than the functions. I noticed that the crane itself isn't locked on the chassis and that it can turn freely without using the function to rotate the crane. Not sure if that's intended or that I made a mistake when building it (hope not.... :P) Steering is really smooth despite the weight of the set. Only little downside is that the chassis bends a little but under the weight of the crane when using the outriggers. Overall, I can really recommend this set if you have the space to store it- 1,224 replies

42054 - Claas Xerion 5000 Trac VC
NioN replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Almost completed the build and I see the differences as well but it really depends on the light source. As long as I see the model in daylight there are no visible differences. However when I place the model under a lightbulb I notice that some parts are less bright lime green than the other parts. Love the model though, it's so reach on details -
42055 - Bucket Wheel Excavator
NioN replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Finished the build yesterday which took quite a while. As Sariel already pointed in his review, the whole construction is kinda fragile. Small bricks get easily stuck inside the structure when either leaving the buckets or when changing the belt. Also somehow I can only rotate the structure counter clockwise and not the other way around but that might be a little building mistake... During the build I found out that I was missing a yellow 15 beam, luckily I had quite a few spares from the 42009 set. -

Really enjoying the build so far. Just connected the bottom part with the base of the pillar (step 163). What I noticed is that the four supporting wheels are not placed inside the yellow track but they are placed at the inner part of the yellow track. That seems a bit strange as you expect the wheels to be alligned with the middle track/rail. I double checked the instruction s but it seems to be fine. Otherwise these support wheels should have been placed just a little bit more to the bottom as they would float instead of being connected with the yellow track. -

I would be really surprised if that is a common thing. I can't recall having seen any color differences for the same color on any model yet. It might look a bit off due to contrast with other colored parts but that should be it. But well, waiting for the phone call from my local Lego store to pick the set up today along with the BWE and Volvo. -

Color Coding
NioN replied to Richard Dower's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
For me it's a non-issue, especially from a design point of view. I don't mind if they are used internal but I prefer it if they aren't used/visible for the bodywork. For example I still don't understand why they've used blue pins for some parts of the Porche design which are clearly visible. It's an expert (display) set so why haven't the used a black pin? Yes that might make the build proces a bit harder but it isn't an expert set for a reason. Also, I never sort the pins, axles, beams etc when building a new set. Part of the fun for me is digging into al the pieces for each step. This doesn't bother me at all and extends my building and fun time. -
Really liked the review and it seems to be a very interesting build. The design looks quite nice too with lots of details. I guess that it will be only a matter of time before we will see some other attachments than the crane. That double PTO is really interesting. Guess I will pick this up as well, well I actually like this set even more than the BWE which got me hyped from the start.

Really looking forward to this set after seeing all the images and gears. Dutch and Belgium AFOL's can get it for € 199,99 at my local Lego store: http://www.playtoday.nl/webwinkel/technic/42055-emmerwiel-graafmachine/ Unfortunately they don't ship to any other EU country. -
[REVIEW] 42052 - Heavy Lift Helicopter

Ah, thought it was some kind of lever. Which doesn't make any sense though as it's not connected with anything... -

Picked up the set this weekend and completed the build. I really liked it however many of the parts were quite stiff to connect them, something that I've never experienced before. For that reason the cargo doors at the bottom of the helicopter don't open very smoothly. What really made me wonder is the orange 'switch' at the beginning of the tail and just above the rear cargo door. It doesn't seem to have any function? -
I don't know if that has been asked before but I've always wondered why Lego includes offset colors for some parts in many Lego sets. It's mostly bright yellow, green, blue or red pieces that are used when building a set. These pieces are (almost) always covered with pieces in the colors that match the set. It might be unclear what I mean but a good example is this video building a grey themes Star Wars model. Many small red, blue and yellow parts are used in the build which are later covered with grey parts. You can see it from 1:00 in the speedbuild video: or in the image below. The only reason I can think of, and to me it's not even a logic one, is that it's to ease the building proces for younger builders. Anyone knows why Lego uses this technique in many Lego sets?

Thought I was missing the same part too and also made de same mistake. Probably the instructions aren't clear enough. -

Yeah it looks really nice, they could have only taken out the building instructions for the cabin as it's the same for the main model :P -

It's very smooth probably smoother than the other (older) ones. The crane moves really smooth most of the time but I only have a small part where it's probably a bit blocked by all the hoses surrounding the turntable. -

Just finished building the truck in about 10 hours in a very relaxing pace. Made some tiny mistakes during the build because the instructions weren't always very clear. First impressions so far: - The crane is huge, it really is. Maybe even too big compared to the other parts of the truck. But the new pneumatics are really nice so there's no actual need to complain. What I only didn't get is way they didn't include some extra 1/2 bush parts to cover the open ends of some axles. There are quite a few axles in the crane with some open spaces on the end of both sides where they fit nicely. Adding these parts just make it look even nicer and make the design feel more complete - The cabin looks really nice and is full of tiny details. The new flat 'light' parts look really nice. Attaching the cabin to the chassis was quite difficult for me or maybe it's just my fingers which are quite long ;-) - The new steering mechanics are very clever but steering itself isn't very smooth. Probably due to the heavy weight of the front pare of the truck putting too much pressure on the mechanics - I don't like the amount of open space between the two front tires. It's just too much for me and looks odd. It looks like the wheels are too small this way to me. -

Started building last evening and really enjoying it. Thought that I was unlucky missing a part in the first set of bags but turned out that I made a tiny mistake... I really like the adjustments that they've made to the cilinders and switches. It's so much easier to connect the hoses now. -

Just picked up my pre-order from a local toy shop. Can't wait to build it tonight Shop owner told me that the first batch of sets delivered by Lego was already out of stock at his supplier. So grab one while stock last, unless you don't mind waiting a few more weeks. -

Saw an advert on Marktplaats from a local toy shop in Waddinxveen. They did raise the price to 169.95 on friday but it's still a pretty good deal. You can either pick it up on thursday or they will send it to you for 4.95 A 50% deposit is required to place your pre-order. -
This is by far the most beautiful model I've seen here on this (sub)forum from a design perspective. The colour scheme is so nice and the metallic parts are the icing on the cake.
